The organization will hold its 40th annual fundraising banquet on Friday, March 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim.

“People can enjoy a delicious dinner catered by Stoltzfus Catering, and we’ll have a wonderful speaker,” said Cristina Paden, executive director of REYS. “We’ll also share updates on our ministry and what’s been going on at the youth center. We want people to get connected to our ministry and get excited about all the things that are happening at REYS.”

If you love to sing, you’re invited to participate in the first Chiques Choir Festival, to be held on Sunday, May 1, at 4 p.m. The event’s location is still being finalized, but rehearsals for the choir will be held on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m., in the sanctuary of Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC), 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Rehearsals will begin on Feb. 23. See Choir pg 2

Dinner will include Parmesan chicken, hamloaf, raspberry vinaigrette salad, potatoes, corn and green beans, plus pies and cakes. The keynote speaker for the event will be Kari Tavella. The wife of “America’s Got Talent” winner Dustin Tavella, Kari had a successful career in the entertainment industry as a model and actress before drugs and alcohol took over. In a time of desperate need, she turned to Jesus. “She has a really cool story of coming from a bad situation, hitting rock bottom and how God completely transformed her life,” Paden stated. “We felt like that really resonates with what some of our students who come to REYS are experiencing. We want REYS to be a place where they can flourish, where they can hear about the transformative power of Jesus.” Tickets to the banquet are free. Funds are raised for REYS through sponsorships and donations. “We are still looking for sponsors, and we will collect a freewill offering at the event,” Paden remarked. “Money raised will help support the operating expenses of the youth center, our after-school programs, our music programs and martial arts programs. It takes money to offer all of these things for free to our families.” REYS offers programs for students in grades one through 12, serving Mount Joy and the surrounding areas. The banquet will also feature a video presentation, sharing the stories of some of the people who have been impacted by REYS throughout the years. “The banquet is a really cool way to see up close what REYS is all about,” Paden stated, noting that she hopes to have some of the current students at the banquet. “Come see what REYS is doing and how we’re reaching local youth in Christian love.” Reservations are required for the banquet, and the reservation deadline is Monday, March 7. The event is being organized by Tom Berdos, director of music for Chiques UMC, who has coordinated a community concert featuring Handel’s “Messiah” for many years. Although this will be the first time the choir festival will be held locally, Berdos has conducted the festival at other locations out of state. While the “Messiah” concert featured a difficult piece of music, the choir festival is more accessible to everyone, Berdos noted. “The music is generally lighter and more varied than ‘Messiah,’ and it’s easier to learn and sing,” he stated. “While ‘Messiah’ is very classical, heavy-duty stuff that takes a lot of work to master, this is not that. This will feature a wide variety of music.” The pieces will still be sacred music, he noted, but will include choral anthems ranging in style from classical to modern, including hymns, spirituals and other choral arrangements. “When I did this concert before, we had people up dancing in the aisles,” Berdos commented. He invites anyone with an interest in singing to join the festival. “There are lots of churches these days that do not offer a choir,” he stated. “I’m a big believer in following the Lord’s commandment to sing together. I’m hoping people who love to sing but don’t have the opportunity to sing in a church choir will jump in. I am looking for anyone who wants to sing sacred music.” The concert will be free to attend, but a freewill offering will be received to benefit local emergency responders. In previous festivals, Berdos said, some of the responders participated in the concert and people whose lives were saved had a chance to speak at the festival. “My goal for this is to make this festival a community event,” he stated. “We want to give back to the people who are giving so much to us. It’s about supporting the people in our community who support us.” He noted that he’ll be keeping a close eye on COVID restrictions as the festival approaches to determine if
the event can be held at the church or will be moved to a larger venue to allow for more social distancing. In the meantime, he encourages anyone who feels called to participate to contact him and join rehearsals. “You do not need to have a church affiliation to participate,” he said. “This is for everyone. Schell said the Chocolate Walk has been offered for more than 10 years, and it provides an interactive way to promote local businesses. “This is a great event to bring people downtown and walk inside businesses,” he stated. “While they are getting their chocolate goodies, they can also discover something new about a business or walk inside a business for the first time. This is also a fundraising event for Main Street Mount Joy and helps our organization provide business services to the downtown.” He said the Chocolate Walk covers about three blocks in Mount Joy and can easily be completed in the threehour timeframe either day. Indians Win Two of Three, Finish 12-10 Overall

The Crusaders improved to 6-5 in league play with a 52-43 triumph, making their 18-10 run in the opening period prove to be a big enough margin for them to withstand the momentum shifting in Donegal’s favor. The Crusaders were led by Jack Engle, who finished with a game-high 17 points. They were able to hold Masden to nine points while Good led Donegal with 11 points on the night. Both Good and Masden connected on a three-point basket. Turbedsky, Dameon White and Noah Rohrer each finished with seven points. The season’s final game was a case of the visiting Vikings going on a fourth-quarter rampage to make it a very close contest. Northern Lebanon came into Wednesday night’s matchup with a 39 L-L League record. The Indi-
ans held the Vikings to single digit scoring in two of the first three periods and led 3323 heading into the fourth quarter. The Vikings, paced by Peyton Wolfe’s 17-point performance, had a 21-12 run in that frantic finish. It was not enough as the Indians held on for a 45-44 win. The top offensive contributions for Donegal came in the form of a team effort again. Masden poured in 13 points with Rohrer second in scoring at 12 points on the night. Turbedsky and Cole Hunt each scored six. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Donegal girls held tough against Northern Lebanon in their Wednesday night home game. The Indians trailed by only a 26-21 margin at the half. The Vikings inched ahead in the third quarter and went on to post a 44-33 victory. Donegal finished the year 2-20 (1-10 league). Crystal Bomgardner and Ashlyn Messinger each scored 14 points to lead Northern Lebanon.

National Anthem Auditions Posted The Lancaster Barnstormers will kick off its 18th season in April, with opening weekend at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, taking place on Friday, April 29, through Sunday, May 1. At each home game, the team will honor America with a live performance of the national
anthem. Once again, musicians may audition individually or in groups for the opportunity to perform at one or more of the team’s home games. Auditions will take place on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Park City Center on Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster. A panel of judges will

Northwest EMS has a mission to support the community. To help fulfill that mission, the station signed on to participate with Child Life, an initiative that provides new toys to hospitalized children. “Our office manager’s granddaughter, Taylor, was a patient in the hospital over Christmastime in 2020,” recalled Lori Shenk, community outreach manager of Northwest EMS. “She spent about a total of two weeks in the hospital, and she had never heard of Child Life before. She said it made all the difference to her and her experience was so much better because of Child Life.” She came home and asked her grandmother if the station wanted to collect toys for the program. Shenk said the station began collecting in the spring of 2021 and so far, she’s made multiple deliveries to both Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Lancaster General Hospital. “We collect toys year-round at all four of our EMS stations,” Shenk said, referring to the locations in Maytown, 186 Rock Point Road; Brickerville, 10 Hopeland Road, Lititz; Elizabethtown, 380 W. Bainbridge St.; and Manheim, 60 W. Colebrook St. “We accept new
toys only. When people drop them off, they should either label the toy for Child Life or let the person they give it to know it’s for Child Life.” Shenk collects the toys and makes a donation when she has enough to split between the two locations. Her aim is to deliver two to three times a year. Toys are accepted for boys and girls of all ages, from newborn through age 18. “If a child is undergoing a procedure or having surgery, he or she can come back to a new toy, and it’s just a little bit of joy for them,” Shenk said. “It gives them something fun to do in the hospital and lets them know someone is thinking of them.” Participating in the Child Life program is part of the station’s goal to connect with the community, Shenk said. “We try to do community outreach because we have a unique window into the community,” she stated. “We see the need, and if we can do something as simple as be a drop-off location, we want to do that.” Along with Child Life collection, the station is collecting food for the three food banks in the geographic locations the station serves. “We’re collecting for the Manheim Central Food Pantry, the East Donegal/Conoy Christian Food Bank and the Elizabethtown

Community Cupboard,” Shenk stated. While Child Life collections are accepted at all of the station’s locations, food is collected only at the Elizabethtown station and the Manheim station. Personal hygiene items will also be accepted, and no food items may be outdated. Collection will run throughout the month of February, with food
delivered prior to Friday, March 4. A shoe drive is also underway at the Manheim station to benefit Hope Served, a Manheim-based nonprofit that supports people with disabilities. For more information on the Child Life program or other donations at the station, contact Shenk at 717371-8282.

Jen West, program director for Girls on the Run (GOTR), is exuberant about the programming the 2022 Camp GOTR will offer to area girls entering third, fourth, or fifth grades by fall. “It opens possibilities for new careers for girls … where they can see past elementary school to what will be available for them (in the future),” said West. Camp GOTR will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day from Monday, June 13, through Friday, June 17, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Greiner Advanced Manufacturing Center, 599 Chesapeake St., Lancaster. Mornings will feature opportunities to delve into the GOTR curriculum designed to boost confidence and appreciation as campers write, create, discuss, and connect. In the afternoon, girls will participate in excursions focused on careers for women, including public safety, health and medicine, machine technology, and entertainment. Girls will meet mounted police, learn about robotic surgery and orthopedics, make a keychain in a machine shop, and visit a multiplex cinema.
