More Winter or Early Spring? Mount Joy Minnie Knows
BY CAT SHANNON
Should you pack away those gloves, scarves and snow boots? Or should you keep your shovel and rock salt handy?
Find out what Mount Joy Minnie predicts when she makes her annual Groundhog Day prognostication at the Rotary clock, located at the intersection of Marietta Avenue and East Main Street in Mount Joy, at 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 2.
This will be the 18th year Minnie (a furry puppet) will predict whether we’ll enjoy more winter or be treated to an early spring.
Mount Joy Area Chamber of Commerce director Michele Emenheiser shared that there are three people to thank for Minnie’s predictions: Robert and Sharon Myers and Nancy Shonk.
Robert Myers, who owned As the Crow Flies along with his wife, Sharon, held the borough’s first Groundhog Day event on Feb. 2, 2008.

With a tagline of “always pushing the boundaries of what theater can be,” Creative Works of Lancaster champions the power of performance.
“We believe that theater can be a powerful force for good - building community, sparking connections and cultivating joy and wonder - and we want people to know that there are many ways to experience theater that go beyond buying a ticket and sitting quietly in a dark building looking up at a proscenium stage,” said executive director Lydia Brubaker. “It can happen anywhere, be accessible and relatable for everyone.”

Famous Comedians
Weigh in on Serious Topic
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Lucinda Hughes hopes people will be dying to read her new book.
The Mount Joy resident self-published “Death WishDeath Is a Funny Thing” on Dec. 20, 2025. It is available on Amazon in hardback, paperback, and Kindle. Signed copies are for sale at Jack’s Family Tavern, the Millersville restaurant she owns along with her husband, Chris. The premise of the tome is simple. Hughes conducted Zoom interviews with well-known comedians such as Colin Quinn, David Attell, and Ron Bennington and asked them about the loss of loved ones.
“They’re mainly from the New York area, because they are the ones I know and became friends with over the years,” she said. “I just love comedy, and I love stand-up. I always have. I go to a lot of shows. After the shows, I tended to always say something to the comedians and got to meet them. I’ve been in hundreds of shows, and I’ve gotten to know them over the years, and just became friends. It’s been pretty surreal getting to know some of these people and being able to call them if I want to, so it’s pretty exciting.” Hughes was inspired by another comedian. “There was a bit that Louis C.K. did, and it was about his mother,” she said. “His mother had died, and he described this van picking her body up because she had made the arrangements. He described it as just some van with an empty Gatorade bottle rolling around in the back. Comedians

make fun of everything, and if you do it the right way, it’s funny.”
Quinn first gained national prominence as the host of the MTV game show “Remote Control,” which debuted in 1987. “My husband knows this, but that’s when I first fell in love with him,” Hughes joked. “I’ve always loved him. He’s great. Every comedian that I’ve met, they are the nicest people, very generous, very giving, very friendly.”
Hughes informed Quinn of her book idea in 2024. “I said, ‘Hey, I have this idea. What do you think?’” she said. “He’s said, ‘Oh, that’s great.’ And once he said that, I thought, ‘OK, I’m going to do it.’ So then I got in touch with all these comedians, and all of them said yes. I was really surprised. I took those interviews, and I intertwined my personal experiences with death and some weird facts from around the world.”
Hughes noted that everyone reacts differently to death. “I think some people are pretty outrageous in the way they do it,” she said. “Other people are on the opposite end. I got it in my head that I really would like to hear their answers to some of these questions. I wrote a list of questions, just around death and before and after, and how it’s affected them.”
Her eldest son, Christopher, passed away. Hughes’ sister, Jennifer Miller, died in January 2025, four months after Hughes started writing “Death Wish - Death Is a Funny Thing.” Hughes is also motivated by her children Zach and Lila. Lila is studying music and creative writing at Elizabethtown College.
Hughes wasn’t always interested in becoming a writer. “I’d never done anything like it before,” she said. “I went to Millersville Uni-

versity, and I did my papers at 3 o’clock in the morning and they were due at 6.”
Now she acknowledges she’s got the writing bug. Her next book is already in the planning stages. “The idea circles around a famous comedian and their assistant,” said Hughes. “I have a couple notes written down, and I’m trying to set up an interview with an assistant of a famous comedian to just get some background and make sure I know exactly what they do.”
In the meantime, Hughes wants “Death Wish - Death Is a Funny Thing” to provoke thought and stimulate dialogue.
“I hope people talk more about death,” she said. “I know people do, but it’s always such a taboo subject, and you don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. I feel like this book takes this seriously, because there are some serious and emotional stories in here. It also makes

light of it, because what can you do? If it opens up conversations with other people, that’s awesome. That’d be great. The other thing is I love stand-up, and I hope people go to a stand-up show. I want to support these guys as much as I can because that’s what has supported me through my life.”

Creative Works of Lancaster became a nonprofit in 2010 after a few years of grassroots organizing with a group of creative people in Lancaster, Brubaker said. Original board members were Brubaker, Anne Kirby, Daniel Klotz, Jenn McMorris and the late Douglas Campbell.
“The project started with plans for a community arts center, with creative co-working space, rehearsal and studio space, performance and gallery space and a cafe, but we switched gears when the economy collapsed and decided to be nomadic and create theatrical events in various spots around the city,” Brubaker shared.
The group’s mission is to nurture and promote creative opportunities throughout the community in order to provide “exquisite moments of surprise and delight in an ever-challenging world,” she said.
Creative Works of Lancaster performs three to six times a year.
“The whole city is our stage, and we’re always looking for new spots that inspire us or feel like the right place for a particular performance,” Brubaker stated. The group has performed in more traditional venues, such as Zoetropo lis, West Art and the Green Room Theatre at Franklin & Marshall College, but it has also used space in restaurants, shops, schools, public parks, barns, churches, hotels, parking lots, cemeteries and more.
films, The 24-Hour Plays: Lancaster, site-specific performances designed for particular locations and traveling performances where the audience moves from one place to another,” Brubaker said.
Some past highlights have included inviting audiences to eat hot dogs and do camp activities with the troupe, setting willing audience members up on awkward dates for a Valentine’s Day performance and creating a theatrical escape room set in an Antarctic research station.
“We just got done with a busy fall, celebrating our 15-year anniversary with the Net Gala, our send-up of the Met Gala, and premiering ‘Dead Inside,’ a new play by local playwright Gwen Tulin, and ‘Dye Hard: The Siege of Sockatomi Plaza,’ our latest sock puppet parody by playwright and former Creative Works board member Erich Goldstein,” Brubaker said. The group is taking a short break but is also busy planning its 2026 season, which will include a new sock puppet show for the Lancaster Fringe Festival in May.

The organization’s mascot is named E.E. (for the Exquisite Explorer) and is always shape-shifting and changing outfits, rep resentative of the nonprof it’s evolving works.
To keep live theater accessible to everyone, Creative Works of Lan caster uses a “pay what you decide” ticketing model, letting audience members decide what the experience was worth to them or what they can afford after a show is over.

“We do original plays by local playwrights, sock puppet parodies of classic
“We’re creating brandnew theater by artists in the community. There are so many talented, creative people in the area, and while there are many other great theaters that provide opportunities for people to work on established plays and musicals, we want to give people oppor tunities to collaborate on
new work, take chances and bring their ideas to life,” Brubaker said.
Originally from Lancaster, Brubaker has been involved in regional theater for two decades. She directed new plays in college and enjoys collaborating with playwrights, but she also participated in Odyssey of the Mind, a creativity and problem-solving competition for students, and put on puppet shows as a child. Creative Works of Lancaster provides an opportunity for Brubaker to maintain an active creative life and work with other creative people. She particularly relies on board chair Joanna Underhill, a longtime friend and theatrical collaborator, for keeping the organization thriving.
“She’s been active in the Lancaster performing arts scene since 1996, and she’s the one who first brought up the idea of doing ‘Sock Puppet Psycho,’ our very
first sock puppet show,” Brubaker said.
Brubaker hopes audiences will continue to support the nonprofit’s work, and she encourages newcomers to check out a performance.
“Expect the unexpected!” she said. “We know it can feel risky to see something new, but you can be assured that our goal is for you to have a good time and to be surprised and delighted by something you’re not going to see anywhere else. You’ll share an experience with other people in the community, knowing that a lot of hard work, creativity and heart went into making it happen.”
To learn more about Creative Works of Lancaster, follow the organization on Facebook or Instagram or visit https://creative lancaster.org. There is also an opportunity on the website to make a tax-deductible donation to support the group’s projects and artists.

He passed away later that year, and the event was paused in 2009. In 2010, Nancy Shonk, who was the Chamber director at the time, asked Sharon if the Chamber could continue the tradition.
“She totally approved and gave me Mount Joy Minnie and her little tree stump,” Shonk said. Nancy was Mount Joy Minnie’s handler for the next 11 years before passing the honor along to Greg Sallade and Carl Hackman.
Sallade continues his role as Minnie’s handler and will be joined again this year by Denny Brandt and guest handler Jacob Ziegler.
“Being Mount Joy Minnie’s handler is an honor,” said Sallade, now in his sixth year in this role. “She is well loved in the community and brings a lot of joy to Mount Joy.”
That’s a sentiment shared by Brandt, who served as Minnie’s guest handler in 2023 before becoming her co-handler in 2024.
Ziegler will return as Mount Joy Minnie’s guest handler this year, and he’s excited to be a part of the small-town celebration.
“Growing up, I loved all the little traditions Mount Joy had. Being able to be Minnie’s guest handler lets me be a part of those traditions,” Ziegler said. “Seeing all of the kids enjoying Minnie and building their love for our community makes standing out there in the cold worth it!”

Women’s Group to Meet
Giant Sponsors Feeding School Kids Initiative

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Aubrey Geib will present “Growing in Biblical Love.” She will discuss what the Bible says about love, how people are loved, and what it looks like to show love to others.

Aubrey and her husband, Joel, live in Elizabethtown and are members of Chiques Church. Aubrey works full time at her family’s dairy farm in Marietta. She enjoys baking with fresh-milled flour, reading, and listening to podcasts. During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. Readers may contact Bonnie at 717-361-2613 or Veronica at 717-626-7603 for more information and a copy of this year’s schedule.
The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative.
Marking its sixth year, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Tuesday, March 31. To launch the program, the Giant Company will donate $100,000.
Through Feeding School Kids, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with
weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs. In 2025, for example, the Frederick County School District in Maryland put funds toward food costs for its Bright Futures weekend food pack program that feeds 1,500 kids each week; the State College School District directed funding to cover student lunch debt and to rent a mobile refrigeration unit for its Summer Lunch program, serving nearly 7,000 meals; and the York Suburban School District used funds to cover food expenses for its Impact Pantry for one year, serving 70 families twice a month.
