Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, will host a Youth Art Walk on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Artwork by Donegal High School art students will be displayed throughout the library. Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy, will offer its Little Notes music program for babies to kindergarten-age children on Thursday, Jan. 24. The free program meets from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on the second, fourth, and fifth Thursdays of the month. The program includes songs, instruments, a parachute, snacks, and DVDs. Participants may enter through the front door. In the case of inclement weather, Little Notes will follow the Donegal School District cancellation schedule. In the 10 years that Mount Joy Minnie has been popping up out of her tree stump on Feb. 2 to predict either a welcome early spring or six more blasted weeks of winter, the groundhog has been correct eight out of 10 times, according to Minnie’s “handler,” Nancy Shonk. With Groundhog Day 2019 fast approaching, Minnie and her posse - members of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce - recently gathered to promote this year’s event, scheduled for the usual early hour of 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Rotary Clock, located at

East Main Street and Marietta Avenue in Mount Joy. This reporter wanted to know: Does the magnificent marmot have a secret to her impressive 80 percent success rate? Minnie remained mum - she was, after all, rudely roused from her hibernation for this publicity gig. And Shonk was not about to spill any secrets. “She just has that feeling,” Shonk said. “She’s competing with the big boys, so she has to be pretty accurate.” The “big boys” are, of course, the famous Punxsutawney Phil and Lancaster County’s own Octorara Orphie, who rarely agree on a winter forecast. Music Educators Association (LLMEA) County Chorus Festival will take place on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Students from Lancaster and Lebanon counties auditioned to take part. More than 200 students will participate, rehearse all day, and then perform a concert for the public in the evening. Lobel was born in France and grew up under Hitler’s regime during the five-year Nazi occupation. The club meets at St. Anne’s on the last Tuesday of each month except December. Event organizers noted that the clothing giveaway serves two purposes: It is a way for church members to answer the call to serve and take care of others, and it also helps to promote a “reduce, reuse, recycle” lifestyle. All sizes of clothing will be available, with items for newborns through adults. In previous years, the event has offered coats of all sizes, as well as men’s and women’s suits. Organizers also hope to have a selection of accessories available, as well. They are accepting donations of any item that helps to complete an outfit, including shoes. The church is accepting donations from the community of new and gently used clothing. Donations may be dropped off Mondays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Donors should mark bags with the gender and size of the donations and place them in the

storage container in Trinity’s parking lot. The annual event is organized and supervised by Trinity’s congregational members and friends. The church’s BOLD Youth Group begins sorting and organizing donations on the Wednesday evening before the event, and adults and youths work steadily for the following two days to ensure that everything is categorized by gender and size. Items will be placed throughout the church building. Items for men and women will be located downstairs, and shoes, coats, and children’s items will be located upstairs. Stationed throughout the church to offer direction and assistance to sale attendees will be volunteers wearing name tags and T-shirts that state “Live Generously.” Trinity’s Fellowship Committee will organize and supervise the community meal that will take place on the same day. Serving will be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,

and meals will be available to eat in or take out. The menu will include ham, mashed potatoes, baked corn, applesauce, and desserts. Hot and cold beverages will be served at the event. In previous years, church members have served 350 people at the community meal. Event organizers noted that Trinity Lutheran Church’s congregation is committed to finding ways to help and serve the community, and the church also supports the Mount Joy Food Bank and the Donegal Power Packs Project. Members of the congregation support the clothing giveaway and community meal in a variety of ways, including by donating clothing and baked goods, sorting and organizing donations, and helping on the day of the event. Donegal Challenges The Opposition But Falls Short by Vaughn Brown

Donegal’s boys’ basketball team was still looking for its first win of the season last week at the start of a threegame slate, and ended with the elusive W still out of reach. Against Octorara the Indians came close, but fell just short 70-61 while New Oxford won 56-34 and Lancaster Catholic came away with a 65-37 victory. Despite battling back from a third quarter, 15-point deficit against the Braves last Friday, January 11, at home, the boys couldn’t get over the hump despite Ryan Zuch posting a game high 21 points for the Indians. Reed Licopoli (14) and Patrick Summers (11) helped lead the charge, but the defense had problems keeping pace with Octorara’s offensive pressure as four of the five Braves starters posted double digit scores. Donegal’s best quarter of the game came in the final frame where they gamely fought for the upper hand, outscoring the visitors 20-14 along the way, but could not slow the Braves down enough to make it count. Octorara steadily built leads of seven, 12, and 15 on the backs of Keith Lambert and Naji Hamilton, who both scored 15, as well as Alex Lantz (13), and Phillip Brandon (10). Donegal once again scored 20 points in the fourth quarter but by then the score was 41-14 in favor of the Colonials who were able to coast to the win. Playing Lancaster Catholic is usually a tough challenge and last Tuesday’s game in Mount Joy was no different. The Crusaders took control of the game early and built a commanding 45-12 lead by halftime, despite Licopoli’s team high 14 points and pair of treys. First- through third-graders will meet from 1 to 2 p.m., with fourth- through sixth-graders meeting from 2 to 3 p.m. The clinic will be a modified version of field hockey geared toward younger participants to help them learn the fundamentals. Mount Joy Minnie from pg 1 Minnie was Lancaster County’s first (and only) female groundhog, thanks to the vision of the late Bob Myers, an eccentric, fun-loving Mount Joy businessman who hosted Minnie’s first Groundhog Day appearance in 2008. After Myers died unexpectedly in July 2008, the festivities were put on hold the following February. But in 2010, Shonk, then the Chamber’s executive director, got permission from Myers’ widow, Sharon, to restart the quirky event. It has been held every year since, at times drawing up to 100 people, including families with children, according to Shonk. For those readers who are still wondering: No, Minnie is not a flesh-and-blood groundhog; she’s a puppet that lives in a tree stump made of chicken wire and papier-mache. But some confusion is understandable. Take Carl Hackman Jr., Chamber president, who admitted,

“It took me three years to figure out she wasn’t real.” (Oh, but her powers are real, very real indeed.) About four years ago, a crazy hat contest was added to the fun, since Minnie herself sports a sprightly spring bonnet. Winners get Mount Joy Money gift certificates from the Chamber, which can be spent at downtown businesses. Last year, Minnie even donned a Philadelphia Eagles football helmet. “Last year she also predicted the Super Bowl winner, too,” stated Hackman, referring to the Eagles’ 2018 championship. So, what would the late Myers think of the event today? “He’d love it,” answered Sharon. “He would have probably had a parade,” added Shonk. Senior Center Sets Schedule

Pictured on front: Work by 17 local artists will be on display at nine downtown Mount Joy locations as part of Festival of the Arts on Jan. 25 and 26. All work will be available for purchase, and the festival will also feature restaurant specials and other activities.

The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, located in the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, invites area seniors to its upcoming programs. The center, a service of GEARS and the Lancaster County Office of Aging, is open regularly on Mondays through Fridays. Samaritan Counseling Center, 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, will offer three Safe Church/Safe Places programs to the community. All programs will be facilitated by trained professionals. There is a fee to participate in each program. Circle of Hope, a support group for survivors of child sexual abuse, will be held on Thursdays, Feb. 7, 21, and 28; March 21; and April 4 and 25. Some need-based scholarships assistance is available upon request. Rising Together, a support group for parents and caregivers of children of all ages who were sexually abused at some point in their lives, will meet begin meeting on Monday, Jan. 28. Sessions will continue on Mondays, Feb. 11 and 25, March 11 and 25, and April 8. There is a discount for couples. Full scholarships are available for women. The group is open to men and women. Safe Church Cluster will engage congregations of various faiths in a process over seven to nine months to bring child protection practices and policies into practice. The program will begin on Saturday, April 6, at which time future dates will be discussed. Fees will be based on the size of the congregation’s membership.
