Helping Neighbors Find Their Way Home

Housing is a basic human need, but it’s also one of the easiest things to take for granted. For many people in the county, the certainty of having a place to call home has slipped away, often after a job loss, medical crisis or sudden life change. That’s where ECHOS steps in, offering a pathway back to stability.

ECHOS, which stands for Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services, provides resources and support for people facing a housing crisis and also offers opportunities for any member of the community to find the help he or she needs.

“A lot of our work is focused on supporting individuals through

housing support systems,” said executive director Ashley Bulley.

“We go from crisis to permanent housing. We run the gamut of everything available for housing opportunities and support.”

Established as a 501(c)(3) based on Washington Street in

Elizabethtown, ECHOS serves the Elizabethtown and Donegal school districts, including Mount Joy, Bainbridge, Maytown, Marietta and Rheems.

The ECHOS Enrichment Center is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and

Where Food and Community Take Root

On a stretch of preserved farmland in Elizabethtown, transformation happens every day at a space that offers reconnection - with the land, with one another and with the essential act of growing food.

This is Wittel Farm, a nonprofit on 85 acres of land with a long history of care, now being reimagined as a place where food, community and environmental stewardship meet.

Records date the property to the mid-1700s, and long before that it was cared for by the Susquehannock people. In the 1980s, Chuck and Katie Wittel placed the property into a land trust, gifting it to the Lutheran Camping Corporation.

While not much was produced at the farm for many years, that changed in 2016, when the farm’s current manager, the Rev. Matt Lenahan, began the Growing Project, a partnership between the Lutheran Camping Corp., the Lower Susquehanna Synod and Hunger-Free Lancaster County. Lenahan, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron, grew up on a large commercial farm in New York and once thought he would never farm again after entering ministry.

His thinking shifted as he became more aware of food insecurity and the fragility of modern food systems.

“I really started to think about the food system and how food-dependent we are because so few of us are actually participating in the food production,” he said. “We’ve really stepped

Outpacing Alzheimer’s With Hope and Action

Discovering he had early-onset Alzheimer’s disease changed Sean Terwilliger’s life, but not in the way you might expect.

“Getting diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is the best thing that ever happened to me,” Sean said. “Before my diagnosis, I worked. I didn’t love my job, but I did it. I had a great life - I had a family, I traveled the world, but I never woke up every day with a mission like I do now.”

Sean’s mission is to help others navigating the world of Alzheimer’s, providing resources and offering hope.

One day, his father asked him to come and speak at Masonic Village, so Sean connected with the Lancaster chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and made the arrangements.

He will speak about his experience when he participates in “The Impact of Alzheimer’s and Dementia in Our Community.”

The free program is open to the public and will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, in Deike Auditorium in the Freemasons Cultural Center/Visitors Center of Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. No registration is required to attend.

Sean resides in Massachusetts, but his father, Bob, and his stepmother, Joan, live at Masonic Village.

After he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in June of 2024 at age 60, Sean began learning everything he could about the disease. A retired IT expert, he shifted his focus to finding a way to live through the disease, which has no cure.

He began blogging about his experience at www.alzblog. net, sharing what he was going through, new research and more.

He also started speaking about Alzheimer’s at public events and became involved with the Alzheimer’s Association chapter near where he lives.

At the program, Sean will be joined by George Kohlweiler, a Masonic Village resident who heads up the community’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s team, as well as representatives from the Alzheimer’s Association, who will provide a more technical presentation on the disease.

Sean will discuss how his life changed after his diagnosis, how important it is to be an advocate for one’s health and how he maintains a positive attitude in the face of the disease.

In 2018, Sean had a mini stroke, after which doctors discovered a hole in his heart. For the next few years, every time he noticed slow reactions, lost words or the inability to remember something, he attributed it to the stroke.

Still, Sean and his wife, Wendy Bradley-Terwilliger, thought something else might be going on.

“It took me six years and seeing doctors in three states to finally get a referral to a neurologist,” Sean said, adding that the

away as a culture from agriculture as a principal way people live, and I think that’s problematic.”

Knowing that access to fresh, locally grown food was a challenge in the county, Lenahan asked a question: “What if we grow food together and give it away?”

From that idea, a community-based effort to produce food for Lancaster County’s charitable food system began to grow. Wittel Farm partners with the Lancaster County Food Hub, the Elizabethtown Community Cupboard, Power Packs, Water Street Mission and other organizations to distribute its harvest. This summer, the farm will partner with Columbia Dream Center for the first time, providing produce for its summer food program.

In its first year, the farm produced a few thousand pounds of food. Now, it is in its 10th growing season, farming about nine acres intensively and growing more than 20 varieties of fruits and vegetables, including plums, berries, pawpaws, greens, cucumbers, pumpkins, beans, peppers and potatoes.

Along the way, Lenahan embraced regenerative agriculture, a chemical-free approach that focuses on soil health, biodiversity and ecological balance. Cover crops, composting and minimal soil disturbance replace synthetic

Women’s Group to Meet

Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, on Tuesday, Jan. 27, from 9 to 10:45 a.m.

fertilizers and pesticides.

“We work year-round at this site,” Lenahan said. “And we are constantly learning.”

That learning happens not only for Lenahan, but for the hundreds of volunteers who come to the farm each year. Between 300 and 500 people help plant, weed and harvest throughout the growing season.

Alex Chism, a Millersville University senior studying education and plant science, joined the farm as an intern in 2024 and quickly became an essential part of its work.

“I really enjoy the physical nature of the work,” Chism said. “It’s very methodical. There are so many things grabbing for our attention, and to be able to just focus on one thing that is very fruitful is amazing.”

This past year, Chism expanded the farm’s crop diversity by adding flowers alongside food. The flowers have increased pollinators such as bees and butterflies, boosting fruit and vegetable production.

Ceinwyn Erb, an Elizabethtown College junior studying environmental science, began volunteering at Wittel Farm in September.

“It’s been wonderful to have every week a set time to be outside, be in nature, working with my hands, doing something that is positively impacting the local com-

munity and the local environment,” Erb said.

Lenahan describes Wittel Farm as “community-sustained agriculture,” a model that invites people into the work of food production rather than simply consuming its results.

“We like to talk about food sovereignty, acknowledging that every one of us eats, so we all have a stake in food production,” he said. “It’s about really helping people to reclaim an intrinsic human connection to the natural world and to growing food.”

He is careful to note that Wittel Farm is not about “agritainment.”

“I really want this to be a place where the community can get involved and have a real experience,” he said. “I think there is actually joy in doing this work together. … I really love bringing people together on the farm who have no

experience with farming at all, no experience with food production, and they get to have an experience here, whether planting something, tending or harvesting. It’s transformational for people.”

This year, the farm plans to add chickens, expand partnerships and hire more staff, including a farm educator role Chism will fill after graduation.

Though the land is held by the Lutheran Camping Corp. and protected by Lancaster Farmland Trust, Lenahan sees Wittel Farm as belonging to the whole community.

“This is a place for everyone,” he said. “Young children, seniors, people with no experience at all. Everyone has something to contribute.”

serves as a walk-in resource hub for community members, said Bulley. Visitors can use computers to search for jobs, access Social Security or disability information, explore health insurance options and more. Two case managers are available by appointment or walk-in to help connect people with services, along with partners such as CareerLink and Lancaster EMS.

“All of this is free to community members,” Bulley remarked. “Anyone in our service area can use the Enrichment Center.”

Within the center, ECHOS also offers an Eviction Prevention and Diversion program, providing funds for people who are at risk for losing their home or who are facing shutoff of their utilities.

From December to April, ECHOS hosts an emergency shelter, open seven days a week from 6:30 p.m. to 8 a.m. With a capacity of 42 people, the shelter includes four family rooms, designed to keep incoming families together during their stay.

The shelter relies on extensive community support, whether through the hot meals provided nightly by groups and organizations

or through the volunteers who help in the evening, spend the night or serve breakfast in the morning.

“Our community is incredible with the support they give us,”

Bulley said, adding that it takes 70 volunteers a week to operate the shelter. “Last shelter season, we did not cook a single meal. Every night, the community dropped off a hot meal, and so far this year, the same thing has happened.”

The shelter is a low-barrier shelter, meaning people have the lowest level of restrictions to be able to use the space.

“We want to get people in who need help and then try to connect them with case management and other resources to get them on a path to stability,” Bulley said.

ECHOS operates several housing programs designed to meet people at different stages of need. Its Homestead transitional housing program includes six on-site apartments for adults 55 and older and young adults ages 18 to 24, particularly those aging out of foster care.

Bridge House at ECHOS offers four two-bedroom crisis housing apartments for families or individuals with disabilities.

ECHOS also provides Permanent Supportive Housing for five highly vulnerable households and operates the Pathways to MyHome program, which helps people secure long-term housing.

ECHOS is funded through gov -

testing resulted in his Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

“I never thought my diagnosis was going to be anything but long-term effects of the stroke,” he recalled. “My goal wasn’t to discover I had Alzheimer’s, but it turns out that’s what happened.”

Now treating the disease with infusions every two weeks, Sean remains hopeful in the medication’s ability to slow the progression of the disease.

And while he’s optimistic now, he wasn’t initially.

“When I was first diagnosed, I crawled into a hole that I never thought I could come out of,” he said. “Many people do that. Many people stay there. I chose to write my way out of that hole, and it transformed my life.”

In addition to his blog, Sean is writing a book, tentatively titled “Alz Fired Up: On the Unstoppable Nature of Early-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease and One Man’s Quest to Outpace It.”

ernment programs, grants, donations and community fundraising events, such as its annual ECHOS of Hope Gala, which will be held on Thursday, May 14.

People can also support ECHOS by donating items from the organization’s Amazon Wish List or signing up to volunteer at the emergency shelter.

To highlight what it’s like to face housing insecurity, ECHOS will host a Poverty Simulation on Thursday, Jan. 29, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at KAV at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive. The interactive experience is designed to deepen understanding of the challenges ECHOS guests face.

Bulley noted that funding is always a challenge for ECHOS, as is the increasing number of unhoused people in the county.

“The challenge we face is homelessness looks so different in our community than what people might think,” she said, noting that it’s a hidden epidemic. “These are people who are living in their cars. They’re living the woods. They’re couch surfing or staying with friends until they outgrow their welcome.”

She added that ECHOS is seeing an increase in older individuals who need help as rents continue to rise or people fall victim to scams and lose their savings.

“I think people don’t really understand how close to homelessness we all are,” she said. “We are literally

there’s no way to know that,” Sean said. “We know so little about the workings of the brain, but I have learned so much in the last year and a half. I spend all my time on this; it’s my life now.”

He focuses on brainwork to strengthen his brain, exercise and healthy eating, but he also remembers to pause and enjoy life.

“I want people to know how important it is when people get diagnosed that they become active in staying hopeful,” he said. “You have time to still live, laugh and love.”

He hopes people who attend the program at Masonic Village will discover the processes for diagnosing the disease, medication options, what prognosis looks like in the ever-evolving process of combatting the disease and guidelines for self-care.

one major life event away - whether that’s a job loss, an illness - from needing help. Our goal is to be that resource for anyone who comes in and says, ‘I’m in a situation that I never thought I was going to be in.’ We’re here to help.”

“I want a quantification of ‘How much worse am I getting? How much life do I have left?’ And

“People are going to hear the story of someone who decided he wasn’t going to sit back and let the disease take him,” Sean said. “I have been blessed in so many ways, and when I lose it all, I will have no regrets.”

at the library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy, on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“It’s a drop-in art show, so patrons can come and go as they please,” shared Jazmynn Whitney, operations coordinator for the library, who described the show as a low-key, casual event. “There is going to be artwork displayed throughout the community room for patrons to go through and look at. We will have comment cards for people to submit for as many pieces of artwork as they want.”

This is the eighth year for the event, which began as a group effort, Whitney said.

“One of the library staff members had a child in school and was disappointed that there wasn’t a good place for all of the students’ art to be displayed. So, through that prompting, the library stepped in and partnered with the school to make an art show happen,” she explained. “It started out much smaller with only high school art, but over the years it has grown to include artwork of students grades kindergarten through 12th.”

People can expect to see a

full range of art styles, including both two- and three-dimensional works.

“In past years it’s been a wide variety - charcoal drawings, paintings, sculptures, prints, mosaics,” Whitney remarked. “It’s all kinds of different art!”

Attendees may fill out comment cards to provide feedback to the artists, and Whitney said the response from the public to the show has always been supportive.

“We’ve always had very positive feedback for this event from parents, teachers and students,” she said. “That’s why we keep doing it each year.”

She encourages people to take some time to stop by the library and enjoy the student works of art.

“This event is all about supporting the talented students in the Donegal School District!” she said.

“Coming is a great way to show your support of the students. Visitors can expect to see a wide range of art and a lot of talent and interesting pieces.”

There is no charge to attend the art show. For more information on the show and other library programs, visit https://mslibrary.org.
