A winter evening in Elizabethtown is about to get a whole lot brighter - and a whole lot sweeter as well. On Friday, Feb. 13, girls and their fathers or other male role models may step out of the February cold and into a reallife Candyland, complete with vibrant colors, oversized sweets, music, dancing and just enough sparkle to make the night feel magical. GEARS will transform Salon 1 at Masonic Village into a candycolored world of imagination for its annual Daddy/Daughter Dance. The event is designed to help families slow down, laugh together and make memories that linger long after the last song plays. “This event is more than just a dance. It is a chance to celebrate and get together as a community,” shared Erin Thomas, special events coordinator for GEARS. “There are activities for everyone, not just dancing!” The dance will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Salon 1 at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. “ This year ’s theme is the Daddy/Daughter ‘Sweetheart’ Dance,” Thomas said, noting that people can expect a colorful, immersive atmosphere. “I plan to bring Candyland to life! This theme allows for lots of colorful decorations and (oversized) candy. Outgoing Principal Treasures His Time at Solanco BY GEORGE DEIBEL

As is usually the case with high school principals, Solanco’s Scott Long has a lot on his mind. While fondly remembering his time in the district, Long is embracing a new challenge. L o n g ’s l a s t d a y a t Solanco High School will be Friday, Jan. 23. “Dr. Long has led from a place of humbleness and humility, and these traits have had such an important impact on S ol anco Hig h S cho ol,” Solanco School District superintendent Brian Bliss said. “From his first day here until now, he has so clearly been driven by a belief in the potential of each child. Every conversation I have had with him over the years has been supported by that belief.

Such leaders are rare. I am pleased he will be continuing to serve Solanco students in a different, yet very important, capacity. I have tremendous gratitude for what he accomplished at Solanco.” On Monday, Jan. 26, Long will begin in his new role as administrative director of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC). Based in Willow Street, Long will oversee all five LCCTC campuses - the three main high school campuses, Willow Street, Mount Joy, and Brownstown; the public safety center in Mount Joy; and the nursing program in Willow Street. The LCCTC works with approximately 1,500 high school students and more than 1,000 adult education students. “I really

didn’t know much about LCCTC until I started at Solanco,” said Long. “I’ve seen students really have t h e i r l i ve s co m p l e te l y changed by the experience they got at LCCTC. They learned a skill and then became very successful. And to me that coincides with my mission. I want to have a positive impact on students, so I felt a calling to apply for the position. And, you know, throughout the interview process and the hiring process, it just became more evident that was where I was supposed to be.” He is excited for the opportunity to reach more students. “As sad as I am to leave (Solanco) because t h e re ’s s o m a ny g re at things in this district that I’m happy to be a part of, I’m excited to serve kids on a wider scale,” he said. “I’ ll still ser ve Solanco students, but I’ll also do it to serve students from all across the county. We have 16 districts that send their students to us (at LCCTC).” L o n g i s p l a n n i n g to make his presence felt. “It is my goal to be around at every campus on a weekly basis, just trying to be visible and be seen,” he said. Long will hit the ground r unning. “(LCCTC) has been growing , and the need for skilled employees in the trades is growing,” he said. “Because of that, they’ve had a significant amount of increase in their applications. Some of their high demand programs have a significant wait list. We’re seeing kids apply to programs, they qualify, and we know they

would do well, but they’re not getting in because there might be 100 applications for 24 seats, for example. So without a doubt, I think we have to find a way to increase our capacity, for sure. That’s probably on the forefront of my mind.” Long will be succeeded at Solanco High by Zac Bauermaster, who is currently the principal at Providence Elementar y School. Originally from North East, Md., Long joined the Solanco School District in August 2012, working as a physical education and health teacher at Smith Middle School for three years. He was an assistant principal at Solanco High for four years before taking over as principal in 2020, guiding the school through the pandemic. L o n g d o e s n ’ t re g re t having to deal with trying times. “That was probably the most difficult year in my school administrative career, and I’m thankful I had it,” he said. “I wouldn’t change it. I’m glad I was in this role for that because it kind of molded me into the leader I am today.” Long lists several major accomplishments during his tenure as principal, giving the credit to faculty and staff. “I would say the first thing is the team we’ve assembled,” said Long. “I think we’ve hired really good people o ve r t h e ye a r s . We ’ ve hired teachers who are caring, empathetic, compassionate. They really are student-centered. They care about their students.

been in this building for about 12 years now, and that means I’ve worked with a lot of people,” said Long, who also previously served as the head coach of Solanco’s varsity boys’ b a s ke t b a l l te a m . “ I ’ ve hired a lot of people, so I’ve been here with them for their entire careers. I’m at the point now where a lot of my students, I know their families because there were older siblings, so I’m connected to their families. That’s 12 years of relationships, and without a doubt, that’s what I’ll miss the most.” Long noted that he is grateful for the support he has received from the school board, Bliss, and assistant super intendent Robert Dangler. “We have a great school board. Our school board is very stable,” Long said. “ They ’re consistent; they ’re involved. It’s a ver y common thing for our school board to stop by and do tours and visit our teachers and students. ... I’m thankful for the leadership from Dr. Bliss, Dr. Dangler. It’s just a very authentic place to work.” Long is leaving with lots of wonderful memories. “I really appreciate my time here, and the years at Solanco have been the best of my professional career,” he said. “I’m just thankful for the time here.”

When it begins at home, generosity is a learned behavior. In some ways, Patrick Trimble’s story reflects the overall generosity of Lancaster County residents. But it also possesses the power to inspire others and create social awareness. “My parents were a tremendous influence on me,” said Trimble. “My parents weren’t people of means, but they did the right things. They taught me how to do the right things. They were simple, hard-working people who raised six children. The value system they instilled in me has helped form who I am today.” Who Trimble is is an altruist. Over the last few years, the 65-year-old resident of Manheim Township has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local charitable causes. But to no Lancaster County nonprofit has he donated more money than Aaron’s Acres. “I’m a Christian. I believe

in God,” said Trimble, who works as a Realtor for Berkshire Hathaway in Lancaster. “Maybe that’s a part of it. I don’t think of it as ‘It’s not mine.’ I look at it as ‘I have it, and I want to give back.’” Humble, unassuming and empathetic, Trimble has donated more than $250,000 of his earnings to Aaron’s Acres over the last 13 years. In addition, Trimble has participated in fundraisers in support of Aaron’s Acres, a nonprofit located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, that assists families with disabilities through recreational activities like summer camps. “The work they do with the kids is fantastic,” said Trimble. “These kids have disabilities, and (Aaron’s Acres) runs summer camps. The kids are there, they ’re playing and it’s heart-warming. They ’re assisting the kids, but they ’re also supporting the parents. Some of these parents never get a break. (Aaron’s Acres is) expanding their programs, and they’re giving something to kids and parents. I have friends who have kids with disabilities, so I see the other side of it. I know the money is being used wisely, I like that it’s a local organization and that it’s flowing to an end result.” Trimble initially became better acquainted with Aaron’s Acres’ mission through a fundraising golf outing in 2012. To help Aaron’s

A c re s , Tr i m b l e b e g a n pledging $100 donations to the organization for every home he sold, and then he padded those donations with even more of his funds. At the beginning, Trimble ’s intention wasn’t to donate a quarter of a million dollars to Aaron’s Acres; it just sort of accumulated that way. “If we had a good year, I’d donate a little more,” said Trimble. “Each year we’d donate money. Over the first few years, I really didn’t really pay too much attention to it. Then it kind of became, ‘Let’s see if we can do a little better than last year.’ It’s kind of evolved. We didn’t start with a specific goal.” In his role as a Realtor, Trimble receives a lot of requests from local schools, churches and organizations to donate money or to support fundraisers. His contributions can also serve as business marketing or as a way to promote goodwill in the community. “I’m successful, and I want to give back,” said Trimble. “My father always told me that society functions best when more are giving back than taking. This is my way to give back to society and Lancaster County.” As time has passed and Trimble has evolved as a person, it might be that his priorities have changed right along with his perspective. Kraybill Mennonite School offers a Christ-centered education to students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Founded in 1949, the school marked its 75th anniversary in 2024. Kraybill opened its doors to 31 students in grades one through 10 on Sept. 6, 1949. At that time, the students all came from Mennonite, Brethren in Christ and Old Order River Brethren congregations.

Much has changed through the decades at the school, including the composition of its student body and the structure of the school buildings. The original school met in a renovated church meetinghouse that lacked electricity. Over the years, multiple buildings have been added to the campus, and the school added prekindergarten and kindergarten while dropping grades nine and 10. Today, the school has an enrollment of more than 230 students who represent 75-plus local churches and more than 20 denominations. Throughout the year, Kraybill hosts programs and events that are open to the public, including its two-day annual fundraising auction each spring. “There will be 50-plus breweries attending the event from all over the countr y,” shared Allor y Melhor n, president of Voyage Mount Joy, the organization hosting the event. “There will be two stages of entertainment, one featuring live music and the other featuring a DJ. This is a ’90s-themed event, so we encourage patrons to dress in their best outfits from the era.” Food trucks and vendors will also be on-site for the festival. Last year was the first time Voyage Mount Joy held the beerfest, and the event was a success. “It went incredibly well,” Melhorn said. “There were about 1,400 people in total

at the event. … We had overwhelmingly positive feedback from everyone who attended the event saying how fun it was, how great the quality of the breweries were and how well the event was run.” Voyage Mount Joy will once again partner with YAH Brew in Mount Joy to organize the event and find the participating breweries. While the day promises to be a fun time, it also helps raise money for the community. Last year ’s b e e r fe s t ra i s e d a b o u t $35,000, Melhorn said, with proceeds split between Voyage Mount Joy and another local community organization. “Once the event expenses were paid and par tner

expenses were distributed, Voyage Mount Joy was able to donate $4,000 to the Donegal Athletic Club,” he noted. The club’s mission is to improve the experience of Donegal student-athletes, marching band members, families and alumni. The organization will be the recipient of beerfest funds again this year. Established in 2021, Voyage Mount Joy is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting the town through community events and resources. The Fresh Brews of Mount Joy will offer a fun way to support that mission, Melhorn said. “I would encourage anyone who is looking for a different brewfest experience to check out this one,”

The Lancaster County Workforce Development Board (LCWDB) held a series of events in November that brought hands-on career exploration and p ers on al de velopment opportunities to Lancaster County students. On Nov. 12, the Pennsylvania Restaurant & Lodging Association hosted a Hospitality Career Exploration Workshop at the Lancaster Convention C e n t e r, s p o n s o re d b y the LCWDB. Nearly 100 students in grades seven through 12 participated in culinary and pastry arts activities and heard from industr y experts about career building in one of Lancaster County’s largest employment sectors. On Nov. 13, the LCWDB held its first-ever Youth Conference at Millersville University, welcoming more than 130 high school students from across the county. Students heard motivational keynotes from national speaker Mark C. Perna and local ar tist and Ripple Hub founder Alexander Colon. T h r o u g h o u t t h e d a y, students participated in interactive workshops on résumé writing, interview skills, workplace readiness, postsecondar y options,

and emotional well-being. More than 20 employers and community partners also took part in the event’s resource fair. Also on Nov. 13, Career Ready Lancaster! held a connections meeting at Armstrong World Indust r ie s , w he re ove r 1 0 0 e m p l oye r s , e d u c ato r s , and community partners gathered to hear Perna’s presentation on inspiring the next generation. Attendees engaged with the insights and reflected on new strategies for supporting youth success. T he LCWDB remains dedicated to expanding hands-on learning exper iences, streng thening partnerships, and empowering youths with the skills and confidence needed to thrive in the workforce. The LCWDB provides strategic direction and resource alignment for the reg ion’s workforce system, connecting jobseekers, employers, and community partners. Through collaborative initiatives and forward-looking strateg ies, LCWDB drives inclusive economic g row th and work force re a d i n e s s a c ro s s L a n caster County.
