oesn’t handmade gnocchi in a buttery sauce with peas and prosciutto sound good right now? Or maybe you’re more in the mood for a burger? Whatever you’re craving, you can enjoy it at Infusions, the student-run restaurant located in the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center at 432 Old Market St., Mount Joy. In a typical school year, Infusions serves high tea on Tuesdays and a fixed-price lunch on Thursdays and Fridays. When the pandemic temporarily closed the restaurant, the staff and students got creative. “We

needed an outlet for all the food we’re preparing,” explained chef instructor Tara Zhookoff. “If we have 20 kids making a quart of soup, that’s 20 quarts of soup. We had been giving food to the staff, but then we decided to open a carryout service to the public.” After operating on a takeout-only model for a few weeks, Infusions reopened for sitdown service on Jan. 6. Menus are eclectic and change about every three weeks, and everything is made from scratch, including the sandwich rolls and desserts, which are prepared by students in the baking and pastry arts program. “The name ‘Infusions’ comes from

the idea of taking different foods and fusing them together,” said Zhookoff. “We could serve anything from salmon to flat-iron steak to wings and sandwiches.” High school seniors in the yearlong all-day program learn everything from knife skills to working the food line to planning menus and purchasing food. They also learn front-of-the-house positions such as hostess and server. Senior Daniel Fisher said working in the kitchen has been a great learning experience. “A lot of the things we make, I had never made before,” he stated. “I had never worked with a fryer before.”

Along with performing at Donegal High School football games, the marching unit participated in the Manheim Farm Show parade and competed in six competitions throughout the season. “Our competitions went really well this year,” noted Iris Thomas, president of the band’s student executive council. “We won almost all of them.” When the band competed in the Atlantic Coast Championships, which featured bands in its class from nine mid-Atlantic states, the group earned second place. “Our competitions definitely surpassed our expectations,” said Dale Sellers, who directs the band with Nichole Witman, assistant director. Kieran stated that returning to in-person performing was especially sweet after the pandemic affected the band’s schedule last year. “We did perform last year, but not at the same level as we usually do,” he said, noting that the band sent videos of performances to be evaluated in lieu of competitions. “It’s so much nicer this year, to be together performing as a group. This year, we could do our usual setup and present a much more cohesive show.” Iris added that being able to practice and perform together was only one benefit of the band’s return to nor-

malcy. “ We’re a smaller group, so it’s a lot easier to get to know everyone and be friends with everyone,” she said. “We have a really close connection with every band member … and we do a lot of bonding activities like an induction ceremony and pool parties.” Sellers said his goal for next year is to continue to improve the band and continue to grow the group, although he added he’s proud of what this year’s band accomplished. “Just because a band is small, that doesn’t mean they are not very good,” he stated. “You can have a very good band with a small group, as we did this year. It’s about quality over quantity.” He said another challenge the band faced was the makeup of its musicians. “Half of our band was percussion,” he explained. “Trying to balance that with brass and woodwinds was tricky because percussion can become overpowering if you’re not careful. The percussion players did a great job and blended well with the brass and woodwinds. The results speak for themselves.”

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Sarah G. Welch was honored during a program and dedication on the square in Maytown on Dec. 21. The event coincided with the delivery of American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 809’s Wreaths Across America wreaths. Although they only had two days’ notice due to the timing of the brick and wreath deliveries, 15 family members and friends, including a retired Vietnam veteran, were present for the event. Welch’s wish was to be home for Christmas and see her engraved brick, a Christmas gift from her parents. Sarah arrived in Washington, D.C., in the evening on Dec. 16, and the engraver and Drohan Brick made sure the brick was ready in time for the ceremony. Welch graduated from Donegal High School in June 2014 and entered the U.S. Navy that October. She Sarah G. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The

County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Monday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the envi-

The win came at a crucial point because the Mountaineers forfeited the

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Donegal was resilient in its Section Four contest at home against Lancaster Catholic on Wednesday, January 5. The Indians (1-9) came up short in a 54-27 loss, falling to 0-2 in league play. The Indians had a good second half but were already facing a 21-point deficit at halftime. Victoria Burton scored 12 to lead Donegal. Sophia Floyd finished with six points.

Rylee Kraft had a gamehigh 23 for the Crusaders (63), who remained unbeaten in league play at 3-0. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Coming off the East Pennsboro Holiday Tournament, which the Indians won with a 39-19 defeat of GreencastleAntrim on December 29, the Donegal boys’ basketball team was poised to take on Lancaster Catholic Wednesday, January 5. In the victory over Greencastle, the Indians held the Blue Devils to single digit scoring in each of the four quarters, dominating the second stanza 13-6 and the fourth by a 12-6 margin. Noah Rohrer and Khalil Masden led the Indians in scoring with 13 and nine

points, respectively. But four quarters were not enough for the Indians’ next game - a clash with Lancaster Catholic on the road last Wednesday. The L-L League contest went into double overtime before the Crusaders pushed ahead for a 6157 victory. It was a tough loss for Donegal (4-5), falling to 0-3 in league play. Donegal had the upper hand early on with a 16-8 lead to start the second stanza and a 23-15 halftime advantage. The Crusaders charged back

to close the eight-point deficit by outscoring the visitors by four points in each of the final two periods of regulation. Each side put up eight points in the first overtime period and Catholic regained momentum in the second. Masden had a game-high 18 points in this contest while Rohrer scored 12. Each registered one three-point basket on the night as did Cole Hunt (8 points) as well as Deandre White and Joseph Trubedsky - seven points each. Mason Moore led Lancaster Catholic with 17 points.

Giant Donates Hams To Local Food Banks Just in time for the holidays, the Giant Company donated 3,000 hams to 14 partner food banks and food pantries during December 2021. Hams were donated across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, bringing the company’s brand platform, For Today’s Table, to life by contributing a holiday staple to families in need.
