Innkeeper Cooks Up Some Fun BY CATHY MOLITORIS
ancy Skee loves to cook, and now she’s passing that passion along to others. The owner and innkeeper of Olde Square Inn, 127 E. Main St., Mount Joy, released a cookbook in late 2020 and will release an online cooking course soon. “When COVID-19 hit in March, it affected my business, and I was looking for a way to keep my brand out in the public eye,” Skee said. “Over the years, people had asked me if I would ever do a cookbook, and this seemed like a great time to do it.” Working with Dave Schell of Main Street Mount Joy, Skee won a grant to help fund her project. Skee won the grant through the Hartbeat of Main Street Grant Program, created by The Hartford Small Business Insurance and Main Street America. She used the money to publish “Let’s Cook! With Nancy” and to create the website https://letscookwithnancy.com. She also created Let’s Cook! With Nancy aprons that are for sale on the site. The cookbook features 40 recipes for everything from breakfast to dessert, and it also includes stories and anecdotes about Skee’s life.
Center Wins Social Studies Award BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center has a mission of promoting local history. Thanks to its efforts, the organization won the 2020 Outstanding Social Studies Program award from the Pennsylvania Council of Social Studies. The center, located at 26 Furnace Road, Marietta, received the award in October at a virtual ceremony for its program “Iron Around the Bend.” See Award pg 2
“All small businesses appreciate the support of the community,” she stated. “We are all going through trying times, and to have people embrace what I’m doing has been a blessing.” A retired teacher who taught arts as well as home economics, Skee purchased the inn six years ago. “It had been a dream of mine to own an inn for a long time,” she noted. When the pandemic began to impact her business, she had to think outside the box. “I started doing cooking demos on Facebook, demonstrating the recipes I used at the inn and some others,” she
said. “Our posts reached more than 3,000 people a week, and we have people watching from across the country.” Inspired by the success of her Facebook demos, she started exploring the idea of launching an online cooking series. Her first series will feature The Science of Cookie Baking. It includes four lessons on topics including reading recipes and measuring correctly, the purpose of ingredients and the chemistry of baking. Registration is currently open for the classes, which are set to start later this month. Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center’s building is located on the site of the original office building from the last of the local furnaces, Haneman stated, noting that it took about 10 years to restore the building. “We have a number of displays and exhibits there,” he said. “We have an HO-scale model of what the furnace complex would have looked like. It’s interesting for both students and adults to visit.” Although programs are offered on a limited basis now due to COVID-19, the center regularly holds activities for school groups and the public and provides educational materials. “We have an iron furnace walking guide for people who are walking along the Northwest River Trail,” Haneman said. “It’s a pocket guide, and it talks about the iron industry. At one time, eight iron furnaces operated along a 2.5-mile stretch between Columbia and Marietta. The anthracite coal that was plentiful in eastern Pennsylvania made the county a perfect spot for these furnaces, he said, adding that iron furnaces replaced the charcoal furnaces

because we’ve given out close to 8,000 copies over the past two and a half years.” Haneman said the organization learned about the social studies award last year from a board member, who suggested applying. “We sent them everything we had, because we didn’t really know what they wanted,” he recalled. “In September, we got the notification that we had won.” Criteria for the award included an exemplary social studies curricular program, as well as a program that encouraged creative ideas, innovative teaching and involvement of students, the community and teachers. “For a little nonprofit like ours that’s all run by volunteers, it was an honor to even be considered for this award,” Haneman noted. “It was incredible to learn that we were considered the best in the state.” He said everything the center does is meant to highlight the history of the region and to keep that history alive. “This is history that has not been written down, and it’s not being taught in schools,” he remarked. “It’s important for people to know the history of our area.”

Virtual Farm Show Planned Local residents are invited to experience the Pennsylvania Farm Show virtually this year. From Saturday, Jan. 9, through Saturday, Jan. 16, individuals may relax at home, enjoy some Pennsylvania snacks, and immerse themselves in all things Pennsylvania agriculture. Virtual exhibits will be part of the event, featuring vendors, associations, educators, and services. There will be links to videos and activities, as well. The exhibits will not be live until Jan. 9. Various Instagram takeovers will run during the Farm Show, taking viewers behind the scenes. Virtual attendees may learn about everything from goat and poultry farming to organic agriculture to bees to rabbits. The first-ever Pennsylvania Farm Show Trail will be available, as well. The trail is a map that features the commercial exhibitors and PA Preferred members typically showcased at the traditional Farm Show. Individuals may search the interactive map by keyword or simply browse to see what is available nearby. The map features storefronts, such as farmers markets, and businesses with e-commerce platforms. Duckling pond and beehive live cams will also be offered, and viewers may check them daily during the Farm Show from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Numerous live and prerecorded events will be available on the Pennsylvania Farm Show Facebook page and the Pennsylvania Cable Network. Viewers may tune in to learn how to tie-dye with plants or make butter, watch an alpaca obstacle course, tour a farm, find a new favorite Pennsylvania pairing of food and wine, gain dinner inspiration from local chefs and farmers, hear agriculturally themed bedtime stories, or listed to discussions about Pennsylvania’s agriculture industry. Museum Offers E-Learning Classes
The Great Create Seeks Crafters Feeling crafty? Head out to Horst Arts, 17 N. Main St., Manheim, on Saturday, Jan. 9, for The Great Create. The event will begin at 3 p.m. “The Great Create is an arts and crafts competition,� said Jason Horst, owner of Horst Arts. “It’s a little bit like ‘The Great British Baking Show’ but with crafts.� The competition will include three rounds, which will increase in complexity. “The first round doesn’t involve a lot of skill,� Horst said, noting that he didn’t want to reveal too many details ahead of time. “It gets trickier with each round. The second round is more technically challenging. You will follow written instructions and
interpret them in your own way. It’s more of a design challenge, and while you’re doing that, you’ll learn about the history of Manheim and some of its notable characters.� For the third round, participants will make something to take home. “In the last round, you’ll create something beautiful that you can bring home and hang on your wall,� Horst said. “Basically, the first round is about crafting, the second round is about design, and the third round is about being artistic.� Unlike other reality competitions, no one will be eliminated during the event, but winners will be declared for each round as well as an overall winner. vidual competitors, Horst said groups or organizations can reserve times for special events like this one in the future. “This would be a lot of fun for an office party or a bridal shower,� he noted. “For this event on (Jan. 9), you’ll be competing against strangers, so it’s a great way to get to know people. It’s a fun activity and lets you get creative.� Horst held a similar event last year, but this will be first time The Great Create is being held in the business’s new location, which opened in 2020. “If you enjoy watching reality competition shows, why not try your hand at being in one?� he remarked. “There won’t be cameras, of course, but you can compete against other people and show off your skills. It’s going to be a little bit stressful for people, but that’s the fun of it. We want to hit all types of people for this, from the crafter to the person who is more precise with their art to those who truly have artistic flair. Like many places, Winters Heritage House Museum had to adapt to changes this past year. When the pandemic forced the site to temporarily close its doors at 47 E. High St. in Elizabethtown, it also opened an opportunity. “With nobody coming into the museum, we wanted to have a way for our staff to keep contributing to our mission, and we came up with ideas that could all be done virtually,� said Nancy Landis, museum director. The museum launched a series of e-learning courses with topics including crafts, recipes and science lessons. “We sat down as a staff and started brainstorming ideas of things we thought would be fun for people to do,� Landis noted. “These are all things people did to entertain themselves in the days before TV.� Topics are geared toward children but can be adapted for adults as well, she said. “We have a lesson on scherenschnitte, which is German scissors cutting. You can download patterns and print them out,� she explained. “We have a unit on embroidery. Kids love this. I don’t think a lot of people realize how much kids love to sew.� Other crafts include
“We have a lesson on butter churning, which shows what happens to cream when you churn butter and the science behind what’s happening,� Landis remarked. Plans are in the works for more e-learning lessons in the next few months, she noted. In addition to the e-learning series, on its website the museum offers a virtual tour of four murals throughout Elizabethtown. a print-and-fold Conestoga wagon and packhorse train. “Many people don’t realize how important packhorse trains were to early transportation,� Landis stated. “These lessons give people an opportunity to learn as they are being entertained.� Recipes in the e-learning series include everything from homemade ice cream to Irish shortbread. “We came up with recipes that kids can help with,� Landis said. “Kids were definitely in our minds when we were coming up with topics. Most of the recipes are very simple, and we taste-tested everything.� History and science lessons in the series include videos that explain things like how soap was invented and what happens when oil and water mix.

The Donegal High School Counseling Office and Career Resource Center has announced the Mount Joy Rotary Students of the Month for November. The honorees are Aysha Gibbs and Levi Sites. These students were to be honored by members of the Mount Joy Rotary during the club’s monthly luncheon meeting. Aysha is the daughter of Lenny and Melody Gibbs of Mount Joy. She is a four-year member of the softball and soccer teams. She has participated in Spanish Club in the last two years of high school and Varsity Club as a junior. Aysha is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and has used her leadership abilities in her senior year as a Link Crew leader and a class treasurer. Outside of school, Aysha attends Journey Church and is a member of Calvary Bible Church’s youth group. She also spends time with her travel club softball team. Her plans after graduation include attending a four-year college to major in psychology and criminal justice and to play softball.

Levi is the son of Dylan and Michele Sites of Marietta. He is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and a three-year member of FBLA. He was involved in the Student PBIS Council in 11th grade. He is a three-year member of the basketball team and a two year member of the track and field team. He has played soccer throughout high school and has served as team captain. Outside of school, Levi is active at his church, Trinity Lutheran Church, where he serves as a vacation Bible school counselor, volunteers at the church’s café, serves breakfast to members, and has packed bags of food items for the Stop Hunger Now initiative. He is a counselor at Camp YoliJwa, a wilderness camp designed to help children worship God and discover faith. He also plays soccer with Donegal Youth Soccer travel team. With the FBLA, Levi has assisted with organizing and designing community craft shows and feeding families during the holiday season. After graduation, Levi plans to attend a four-year college to major in civil engineering.
