“We need more people to know we are here,” said Will Caverly of Elverson, the new executive director of the Mill at Anselma, when describing the site’s need for visitors, as well as volunteers. The Mill at Anselma, located at 1730 Conestoga Road, Chester Springs, is a Colonial-era custom grist mill that served its local agricultural community for around 250 years. The site features a 16-foot steel water wheel, which is powered by Colonial-era wooden gears and was used to produce cornmeal and flour. The site, which was recognized as a National Historic Landmark in 2005, is maintained by the Mill at Anselma Preservation and Educational Trust, a nonprofit organization that formed in 1998. The mill is open from April to mid-December on Saturdays from

East Brandywine Township will present a live performance of Shakespeare’s classic play “The Tempest” on Friday, July 27, at 6 p.m. The show will be performed by the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School Center for Performing Arts in Community Park. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Demonstration Days are held on the second Saturday of the month. “That’s when we get the mill going,” Caverly explained. “We put some grain through the mill, the water wheel will start up and the gears will be turning.” The next scheduled Demonstration Day will be on Aug. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Special technology tours will be available that day and will focus on how different parts of the mill work. Visitors will also be able to meet Dave Rollenhagen, the site’s miller, and hear him talk about how the gears work and what they do. There will also be handson, interactive activities for children, including the opportunity to sift flour. Visitors are offered guided tours on the weekends and on Demonstration Days. “We could always use more tour guides and docents,” Caverly said. Each year, the Caln Township Parks and Recreation Department presents a Summer Series, featuring free entertainment for area residents. This year’s series will feature a special 150th anniversary celebration on Friday, July 20, that will include a concert and fireworks to be held in the Caln Municipal Park, located at 253 Municipal Drive, Thorndale. Festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with activities for children, including a bounce house, a bubble station and See Caln Township pg 5

This year, Pennsylvania will become the 14th state to present the Leopold Conservation Award in partnership with the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau and Heinz Endowments. Sand County Foundation, a voice for private land conservation, presents the Leopold Conservation Award to farmers, ranchers, and foresters for extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation on private working lands. The inaugural award will be presented at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in January 2019. The recipient will receive $10,000 and a crystal award depicting Aldo Leopold. Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes those who inspire others with their dedication to land, water, and wildlife habitat management on private, working land. The award brings together agriculture, government, environmental organizations, industry, and academia to advance the cause of private lands conservation. Pennsylvania Farm Bureau welcomes this opportunity to promote the inaugural Leopold Conservation Award in the state as another occasion to recognize and reward farmers, who are going above and beyond in adopting best management practices on their farms to protect the environment, while maintaining the future economic viability of their farming operations. NYC Holiday Ramble Posted
The Friends of Springton Manor Farm (SMF) will host a Victorian Ice Cream Social at the SMF Manor House on Sunday, July 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. Featured will be fresh, locally made ice cream, as well as games, crafts and live music. Admission and ice cream are free, but donations will be accepted. This year, the Friends will serve ice cream from a Mexican ice cream shop in Kennett Square that offers unique ice cream flavors. “There will be vanilla and chocolate, with corn as the specialty flavor,� said Robin Spurlino, Friends of SMF president. “They offer Central American flavors, so we chose corn,� she said, noting that it is the shop’s most popular flavor. Ice cream will be served on the front porch of SMF’s Manor House. “There will be various toppings available to create a sundae,� Spurlino said, noting that Friends members will be dressed in Victorian attire for the event. The day will also feature the SMF House Band, which will perform bluegrass and country music. The band will be set up on the grounds near the Manor House.
“For children, there will be crafts and games and a giant bubble-blowing exhibition,� Spurlino added. A display of antique cars will be part of the day as well. Vehicle owners who would like to participate will be provided with a special parking place near the Manor House. No registration is required. While at SMF, visitors can tour the barn, which will be open until 2:30 p.m. “There are baby goats and lambs,� Spurlino said. “We also have chickens, cows, donkeys and horses.� Families may also enjoy the site’s catch-and-release fishing pond. The Friends of SMF is a nonprofit group dedicated to the conservation and preservation of SMF, a 306-acre park that includes 7 miles of walking and horse riding trails, a Victorian flower garden, a butterfly garden, a pollinator meadow and picnic areas. SMF is the only site in the Chester County park system that is a demonstration farm. It includes an agriculture museum, a working barn, pastures and antique farm equipment. The site is home to more than 30 farm animals. The Friends of SMF, a nonprofit organization, has about
40 members, all of whom pay a yearly fee. Members perform a variety of tasks at SMF. “We have volunteer teams for animal care, trail maintenance, weeding the gardens and historic archiving,� Spurlino said. In addition to the Victorian Ice Cream Social, members volunteer during SMF’s annual Sheep and Wool Day, which is held on the last Saturday in April. We donate to three families each year,” said Ciarlone. Additionally, proceeds from the tournaments, along with other donations, have funded the construction of a pavilion at the Downingtown Little League fields in Matthew’s memory and helped construct dugouts at DHSW. After the first tournament, the family also had a monument constructed at the Downingtown Little League fields that lists “Angels in the Outfield” - the names of former players who passed away before the age of 25. Matthew, who graduated in 2007, passed away on Jan. 9, 2009, after a 13month battle with leukemia, which included a stem cell transplant. At the suggestion of Matt’s friends, his family decided to hold a benefit softball tournament since the young man loved baseball and was a baseball player at DHSW. “The first year, we raised $5,000. We have held a softball tournament every year since then,” said Ciarlone. “Last year, we raised (approximately) $12,000.” Each year, the softball tournament draws more than 200 players, who pay a registration fee to participate. All proceeds from the tournament stay in the community. “Each year, we give two $2,000

At the Chester County commissioners’ recent Sunshine Meeting, Health Department director Jeanne Casner announced the results of the WalkWorks ChesCo! First Responder Challenge - a competition that asked Chester County residents to support the county’s 5,000-plus emergency responders by joining a first responder team to compete and see who could walk the most steps in an eight-week period. During the challenge, members of the three first responder teams took more than 148.3 million steps. Team Fire, Team Law Enforcement, and Team Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were captained by Chester County Commissioners Terence Farrell, Michelle Kichline, and Kathi Cozzone, respectively, and aimed to sign up the most walkers and clock the most steps. Close to 400 county residents took part in the First Responder Challenge. Team Fire clocked the highest cumulative steps - more than 53 million. Team Law Enforcement registered the highest average individual steps at 8,180 per day. Team EMS member Yolanda Van de Krol had the highest average daily steps at more than 26,000 a day. To incentivize team members throughout the challenge period, the winning team was promised a donation, made in its name, to the Chester County Hero Fund. The Hero Fund provides financial assistance to the families of Chester County police officers, deputy sheriffs, firefighters, emergency medical techni-

Through contributions made by local businesses, $3,300 was received by the Chester County Hero Fund in the name of Team Fire. WalkWorks ChesCo! is a program that aims to educate and empower county residents to adopt a healthier lifestyle one step at a time by creating more places for walking, supporting and promoting walking groups, coordinating walking challenges, and creating a website that allows everyone to track and tally their steps. It is the county’s response to the national Healthiest Cities and Counties Challenge, a twoyear competition that seeks to empower cities and counties across the nation to create a positive health impact. At the end of 2016, the county was selected out of 400 applications as one of 50 members of the HealthCommunity 50 and received $10,000 in community seed funds to establish WalkWorks ChesCo! English Program from pg 1 The Chester County commissioners recently presented a check for $7,500 to representatives from the Chester County-based Volunteer English Program (VEP). The funds are part of the county’s annual appropriations to organizations and nonprofits. VEP will use the monies to help fund its volunteer tutor training program, which supports English language and cultural instruction for new and long-term residents. The check was presented by Commissioners Michelle Kichline and Terence Farrell at a recent commissioners’ sunshine public meeting. On behalf of VEP, board member and tutor Fred
Crotchfelt thanked the commissioners for the funds, noting that 300 volunteer tutors and approximately 300 immigrant students are currently registered with VEP. For more than 32 years, VEP has provided free, one-to-one tutoring in English language skills, cultural immersion and U.S. citizenship for thousands of immigrants and refugees who live or work in Chester County. VEP provides community-based, nonclassroom instruction from morning through evening, seven days per week. Students working with VEP represent more than 50 different countries.

local senior citizens, people age 18 and up are welcome. “You don’t have to have a background in history, but you have to have a sense of why it is important to preserve something. “We would be willing to take volunteers under age 18 for other jobs,” he added. “We have all kinds of things around here that we need help with, like cleaning up the grounds.” Volunteer tour guides get a one-onone training session and are provided documents containing background information about the history of the mill. “We have a mentorship program. (New volunteers) can shadow (seasoned) tour

guides,” Caverly noted. “The mill itself is an interesting engineering piece of history. I can see people who are interested in physics (volunteering) or people interested in farming because this is part of agricultural history and (deals with) how we make our food.” For those who visit the mill on weekdays, there are a series of informational panels that provide a history of the mill, which was constructed in 1747 by Samuel Lightfoot. The mill changed ownership through the years, and its last owner through 1982, Oliver Collins, ran a grist mill, a saw mill, a cider press, a metal working shop, a barbershop and a lawnmower repair shop at the location, all powered by the same water wheel. The family also operated the Anselma Post Office. “The boards are in progression from the original Lightfoot family, who built the mill, all the way up to the Collins family,” said Rollenhagen. “If someone comes and there are no tour guides available, it is a pretty decent self-guided tour.” The Mill at Anselma is located on Route 401, near its intersection with Route 113. School bus drivers from across Pennsylvania took part in the 42nd annual State School Bus Driver Safety Competition, held on June 22 and 23 on the grounds of the Mount Nittany Middle School in State College. Sixty-six conventional drivers and 12 transit drivers competed in this year’s event. Drivers and competition judges arrived on Friday evening for an orientation and the
driver’s written examination. On Saturday morning, the drivers got behind the wheel to compete in the skills portion of the competition. Events included a physical and verbal bus inspection, height judgement, diminishing clearance, simulated bus stop, railroad crossings, backing up, and curb line parking. Pope John Paul II Regional Catholic Elementary School graduated 64 eighth-graders on June 5. A total of 64 students graduated from Pope John Paul II (PJP II) Regional Catholic Elementary School on June 5 during a Mass at St. Peter Church in West Brandywine. The theme for this year’s eighth-grade Eucharistic celebration and commencement ceremony was “Go Make a Difference.” Father Fitzpatrick, pastor of St. Peter Church, was the primary celebrant. Following the Mass, students were commended for academic achievements and awarded more than $27,000 in scholarship money for high school. Following
the ceremony, graduates returned to PJP II School for a dance to celebrate their accomplishments. Illegal Dump Program News Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful announced the new hire of Rob Dubas, who joined the team as a program coordinator. Dubas will help facilitate the Illegal Dump Free PA initiative across the state, working with local governments, communities, and enforcement agencies to identify and hold accountable individuals and businesses that choose to dump their trash illegally. IllegalDumpFreePA.org is an innovative program launched in 2015 that provides surveillance camera loans, training, and support to Pennsylvania municipalities and community groups. After working in banking for almost a decade, Dubas went back to school to earn a Master of Environmental Science and Management from Duquesne University. He decided to change careers to one
that made protecting the environment a priority after having spent many hours in the woods volunteering with Pittsburgharea trail groups, mountain biking, running, and hiking. As part of his studies, he also had internships with an area land trust and a long-term water-quality research project. The Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Surveillance Camera Loan Program provides grant recipients with three surveillance cameras to capture evidence of illegal dumping at an active dumpsite and technical assistance with installation. Crab Salad-Stuffed Tomatoes Preparing weeknight meals can be tricky, as busy women and men may want to save money and cook their own healthy foods, but have little time to do so consistently. But healthy, homecooked meals need not take much time to prepare. The low-calorie recipe for Crab Salad-Stuffed Tomatoes from “Weightwatchers: Cook It Fast” (St. Martin’s Griffin) can be whipped up in 20 minutes, making it an ideal meal for time-strapped women and men who want homemade meals without all the work that goes into more complex recipes. Crab Salad-Stuffed Tomatoes (Serves 2) 1/3 cup orzo 2 large tomatoes 1 cup crabmeat, picked over for pieces of shell 1/3 cup chopped black or green olives 2 T crumbled reduced-fat feta cheese
2 T chopped fresh dill 2 tsp balsamic vinegar 1/8 tsp salt 1/8 tsp black pepper Instructions: 1. Cook orzo according to package directions, omitting salt, if desired. Drain and rinse under cold water; drain again. 2. Meanwhile, cut a thin slice off tops of tomatoes; reserve tops. Using spoon, carefully scoop out seeds and pulp and reserve for another use. 3. Gently toss together crabmeat, olives, feta, dill, vinegar, salt, and pepper in medium bowl. Spoon crabmeat mixture evenly into tomato shells and cover with reserved tomato tops. Cook’s note: Scoop the seeds and pulp from the tomatoes into a storage container. Cover and freeze up to 4 months and toss them into a soup or stew.
