“Today, we honor two individuals who have fulfilled dreams. They’ve reached goals, and they are making a difference in their communities,” said Vickie Anspach, secretary of the Columbia Education Foundation, speaking at a breakfast for the 2025 Columbia Distinguished Alumni. “Leonardo da Vinci said, ‘People of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things,’ and I think that’s true about these two honorees.”

Amita Mehta, Columbia Class of 1991, and Andrew (Andy) Ohrel, Columbia Class of 1966, were awarded this year’s honors at the event held in the library of Columbia High School in early October.

Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) will hold two familyfriendly events to celebrate the holiday season. A Holiday Open House will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 13 and 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, and a Natural Ornament Making Workshop will take place at Columbia Crossing
River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“We’ve been hosting the Holiday Open House at the Zimmerman Center for over 10 years,” said Sophia Vayansky, program manager with SNHA. “We want to invite our communities to meet our staff, learn about what we do at SNHA and enjoy historical holiday cheer in our beautiful historic house along the Susquehanna.”

For decades, Christmas Day has meant something special for area seniors thanks to the efforts of Helen Bechtold. What began as a simple way to brighten the holiday has grown into a long-standing tradition. And this year, she’s once again asking the community to lend a hand.
“With everything costing more, we really depend on donations,” Bechtold said. “The need keeps increasing.”
Contributions of food, monetary donations and practical household items are welcome. Each meal package will include turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, a vegetable and dessert, along with hygiene and paper products for seniors to take home.
Meals will be offered for takeout only at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., Columbia, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 25.
Last Christmas, Bechtold and her team - including longtime cook Sis Luzader - handed out more than 100 meals. She anticipates an even larger turnout this year.
“There is a real need,” she said. “Our senior population is growing.”
Bechtold stressed that the program is open to all adults 55 and older, regardless of income.
“It’s for anyone who might be spending Christmas alone or who simply doesn’t want to cook,” she explained. “Some people just want a friendly face and a few minutes to talk when they stop by.”
While the meal pickup is in

Columbia, Bechtold welcomes seniors from across the region.
“This is a community effort,” she said. “We’ve had people come from all over Lancaster County, even from out of state. Everyone is welcome.”

A familiar figure in local senior services, Bechtold spent more than 20 years working at the Columbia Senior Center. Even in retirement, her mission remains the same.
“People should not be forgotten, especially on Christmas Day,” she said. “It’s important to us to let the community know that we’re still thinking about seniors on a special holiday that they would be either be alone or they wouldn’t have a meal.”
Bechtold’s volunteer crew includes individuals who have helped for years, along with members of the Donegal wrestling team, who assist with setup every Christmas Eve.
“We had probably 25 boys from the team helping last year,” Bechtold recalled. “They are a huge help.”
More volunteers are always

Any food left over after the distribution is delivered to personal care homes in the area, Bechtold said.
“We just try to make seniors happy,” she said of the meal’s mission. “And they come in, get their meal, and they are happy. It’s wonderful to see that.”
While delivery of meals is not available, people may pick up a meal for someone else. Reservations are required by Wednesday, Dec. 17. To reserve a meal or make a donation, call Bechtold at 717-342-2903 or Luzader at
Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will host its Beekeeper Training Program starting on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m.
The program is taught by Mark Gingrich, a professional beekeeper and owner of Gingrich Apiaries, and it will offer nine sessions, held monthly on Wednesday evenings.
Students will learn about the science, craft, and process of managing a hive at a residential scale. During three classroom sessions, the program will explore the essentials of honeybee biology, ecology, and preparations for the growing season. Then, from the spring through the fall, students
will experience beekeeping hands-on by tending live apiaries at the Horn Farm Center. At the end of the program, students will have the option to take a colony home and enroll in a second year of the course, reinforcing class content while stewarding a hive independently.
To learn more and register, visit www.hornfarmcenter.org/ beekeeper-training/. The program has a fee. Spaces are limited, and early registration is encouraged.
For more information, call 717757-6441 or email education@ hornfarmcenter.org.
The Columbia Catholic Mental Health Ministry will host its monthly workshop on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. in the social hall at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 121 S. Second St., Columbia. The topic of the workshop will be “Trauma Informed Care.”

People who attend the open house will experience old-fashioned fun, she said.
“Visitors can sample chestnuts roasted in our Colonial-era fireplace, make a historical craft or even learn an English country dance,” she remarked. “The dancing lessons will be at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30. The house will also be decorated for Christmas, so visitors are welcome to tour the historic home and enjoy the sights.”
The Zimmerman Center for Heritage is a Colonial-era historic home owned and operated by SNHA. It features exhibits on Colonial life, the Susquehannock people who lived nearby and an art collection called “Visions of the Susquehanna.”
“We also hold events and programs there year-round, including an upcoming lecture series, field trips for local schools and hikes in Native Lands County Park,” Vayansky said. “It is the home of the Chief Uncas, our historic wooden electric boat that gives tours of the Susquehanna from June through October. The Zimmerman Center is also the Pennsylvania Contact and Passport Station for the Captain
John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, a National Park Service-run trail.” People can become Junior Rangers and get an official National Park Service passport stamp when they visit the center.
The center is named for John and Kathryn Zimmerman, but the building itself is called the Dritt Mansion, named for Jacob and Elizabeth Dritt, who purchased it in 1783 or 1784. Jacob fought in the American Revolution as captain of a regiment called the Flying Camp, and he was captured by the British in 1776 and held captive. After the war, he was made major general of the Militia of the Commonwealth. The Zimmermans purchased the house, and renovated and restored it, including archaeological surveys in the process. They donated it to SNHA in 2007.
At Columbia Crossing, people of all ages are invited to create oneof-a-kind tree decorations using natural materials. All materials will be provided, and participants will be able to enjoy light refreshments while they work.
“We will have a wide variety of materials available, from wood
slices that little ones can paint to pine cones and acorns that adults can use in their more intricate designs,” Vayansky said. “We have been holding the workshop for many years, and we’re proud that many local families have made it part of their holiday season traditions. We aim to create a relaxing, cozy atmosphere where families can spend time together doing a seasonal craft and enjoying refreshments without having to buy anything or brave crowds.”
Both the open house and the ornament workshop fulfill the goals of SNHA, she noted.
“At SNHA, we strive to connect people to the Susquehanna River through diverse programs and experiences,” she said. “Sometimes, that means physically getting on
the river with a paddle or a tour on the Chief Uncas, and sometimes that means enjoying a view of the river while you craft with your family! At Columbia Crossing, we also aim to serve the youth and families of Columbia and the surrounding communities through free or low-cost family-friendly programming such as Tadpole Time, River Ranger and our holiday events.”
Both events are free and open to the public. A small suggested per person donation is appreciated to help cover the cost of materials. Registrations are appreciated, but not required, and may be made by visiting https://susqnha.org/ events or by calling the Zimmerman Center at 717-252-0229 or Columbia Crossing at 717-449-5607.

Karl Kreiser, who coached Amita for four years when she was a starter for the high school basketball team, introduced Amita to the group of about 75 family members, friends and community members who came to the breakfast.
“I can’t think of anyone more qualified for this award than Amita,” Kreiser said. “In my 28 years of coaching girls’ and boys’ basketball at Columbia, none were tougher than her.”
Born in Uganda, Amita came to the United States as a refugee after her family fled the dictatorship of Idi Amin. She and her family settled in Columbia when she was 8 years old. During her time at Columbia, she served as vice president of her class; participated in Student Council and the National Honor Society; played basketball with CBAA; and was a member of the high school varsity basketball, tennis and softball teams. She was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Columbia in 2014. Her career includes more than two decades of financial services experience, including her current role as chief of staff to the head of control management in global commercial sales for American Express. She splits time between Bayville, N.J., and Doylestown.
“It’s truly an honor to be receiving this recognition and to also be in the company of Andy feels so good,” Amita told the crowd, noting that she and her twin brother spent many hours at Andy’s family business, Andy’s Market, as children.
“Driving through the back country roads of Lancaster County, it always instills a sense of how far my family has come and a sense of coming back home. Columbia is home.”
Recalling what it was like for her parents to leave everything behind to move to a foreign country with four children under the age of 10, Amita expressed gratitude for the way the Columbia community embraced her.
“Anything is possible when you have a strong community around you,” she said. “I’m so proud and grateful that the Crimson Tide did - and still does - rise for me.”
Retired Columbia teacher Jean Phiel introduced Andy. She noted that both she and Andy graduated from the same class at Columbia, and she’s proud of Andy’s commitment to the town.
“Over the years, I’ve watched Andy dedicate countless hours to our community,” Phiel said. She paraphrased Theodore Roosevelt, saying, “If we are facing
a challenge and doing nothing to meet it, then we are the problem.”
“This sentiment perfectly captures Andy’s approach to life,” Phiel remarked, noting that Andy’s many contributions include tireless work to keep community parks such as Glatfelter Field safe and operational as well as employing countless Columbia students to work at his market.
Andy was born in Columbia and began his education in a one-room schoolhouse in Kirkwood before attending St. Peter’s School and then Columbia High School. After graduation, he enlisted with the Pennsylvania National Guard and served from 1966 to 1972. He and his wife, Donna, have been married for 55 years and have two sons.
Andy’s career as a businessman began at the young age of 11 when he started a snowball business. His father opened Andy’s Market in 1956, and Andy took over after his father’s passing. Andy has been actively involved with CBAA, including sponsoring Andy’s Orioles for years through the market. His local honors include awards from the Urban League, Man of the Year from the Boys and Girls Club and the Jimmy Sheckard Memorial Award. He has also been recognized by the Pennsylvania Senate
and House of Representatives for contributing to the well-being of the community.
His son, Jason, spoke for Andy at the breakfast.
“This community has always been an important part of my dad’s life,” Jason said. “My dad believes when we come together to support one another, we are building a stronger community and foundation for the future. My dad is very proud of be part of the Columbia community.”
Andy made a few remarks as well, noting that he was stunned and honored to receive the Distinguished Alumni award.
“I want to thank everybody for this honor,” he said. “I’m just proud to be a Columbia person.”
Retired teacher Wayne Hershey, who taught both Amita and Andy, presented the honorees with their awards. Each received a plaque to take home as well as one that will be mounted on the Wall of Fame in the high school lobby.
The Distinguished Alumni program is an initiative of the Columbia Education Foundation. The foundation provides support and resources to the teachers and staff of the district in order to enhance teaching and learning experiences for students. To learn more, visit https://columbiaef.org.

ValleyView Alliance Church, 200 Alliance Ave., Hellam, will host a concert by Herald Brass on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 10:15 a.m.
Song selections will include “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming”; “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”; “Joy to the World”; “Sleigh Ride”; “Mary, Did You Know?”; “O
Come, O Come Emmanuel”; “O Holy Night”; “Silent Night, Holy Night”; “Angels We Have Heard on High”; a jazz version of “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen”; “The First Noel”; and “Go Tell It on the Mountain.”
Members of the group will read Scripture passages and share personal reflections

on the Christmas story throughout the concert.
Herald Brass was founded in 2003 when pastor Doug Enck was asked by a missionary to create a band to spread the Christian message by music to Burkina Faso, West Africa. Since then, Herald Brass has traveled to Turkey; Ecuador;

Uruguay; and recently Thailand, where the group was accompanied by ValleyView Alliance Church’s pastor Lee Nanfelt and performed at multiple churches.
A freewill offering will be accepted to support the band’s future mission trips. For more information, visit www.valleyviewcma.org.
