Kreutz Creek Library will host Life-Sized Candy Land.

Step Into Life-Sized Candy Land BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ccording to Hasbro, more than 1 million copies of the board game Candy Land are sold each year. If you remember playing it as a child, now’s your chance to step into the game. Kreutz Creek Library will host LifeSized Candy Land on Saturday, Nov. 12, at the library, 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam. The drop-in event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. “This will be our 10th anniversary of Life-Sized Candy Land,” said branch manager Jennifer Johnson. “We started it in 2012 in our old building, and we’re very excited to have it in the larger space of the new library. It will give us lots of room to play.” The game board, pieces and characters have been created by members of the Library Squad, the library’s tween and teen leadership group. Each year, the youths create characters who give out candy as players travel through the game. As Johnson explained, Candy Land tells the story of Lord Licorice,

“We started it in 2012 in our old building, and we’re very excited to have it in the larger space of the new library.” “We have had some very creative ideas from the youth in the past,” Johnson said. “They come up with some really great characters.” Each character also has a backstory that plays a part in the game, she noted, adding, “This group of tweens and teens really enjoys improvisation and performance.” As people arrive to play the game, they’ll be greeted by youths at the

registration table, where they’ll be able to complete coloring pages and decorate bags for collecting candy while they wait for their turn to play the game. During the game, a caller will announce the moves, and players will collect candy from each character along the game board. This year, the members of the Library Squad have created new set pieces since the original ones have worn out after a decade of use. Sets have been constructed with PVC piping, fabric, cardboard and more. Johnson first learned about the idea for Life-Sized Candy Land from a magazine and thought it would work well for Kreutz Creek Library. “It’s a really unique way to use our space,” she stated. “It’s for all ages, and a lot of families come and play together. It’s nostalgic for the older youth and adults to play. They enjoy trying out a 3D life-sized version of a board game they remember playing.” There is no charge to play LifeSized Candy Land, and no preregistration is required. who has taken over the kingdom from King Candy. “The players are trying to rescue the king by playing the game,” she said. While references will be made to the traditional Candy Land characters such as Plumpy, Queen Frostine and Gramma Nut, the characters in the lifesized version come from the youths’ imagination.
