With a motto of “Service Above Self,” the Rotary Club of Eastern York County works to support community programs, projects and initiatives through the help of volunteers who are committed to community service. The club invites anyone who is interested in learning more about the group to come to an open house on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. The open house will be held in the McGee Room of Burning Bridge Tavern, 108 Hellam St., Wrightsville.
“Many people are looking for ways to make a difference in their community. The Rotary Club of Eastern York County works directly with the community and Eastern High School to provide service and funding support,” said Rotarian Joe Bachman. “Attending the open house is a great way to see how you can get involved.”

Sarah Zeitler wants to get people talking about some of life’s most basic necessities while making sure everyone has access to them.
The Lancaster woman is the local face of I Support the Girls, a national nonprofit that collects bras, underwear and feminine hygiene products for girls and women in need. What began for Zeitler as a simple search for a place to donate gently used bras has grown into a mission she calls both energizing and deeply personal.
BY JEFF FALK
There are so many great causes in Lancaster County. Locally, there are so many life-affirming nonprofits performing life-altering work.
The only thing greater is the generosity of Lancaster County residents.
Faithful Give seeks to link those donors and causes and to enhance that great work.
“Lancaster County has got to be one of the most generous counties in the nation,” said Dave Kieffer, president of Faithful Give. “I feel like it gives God
“We will have a unique way of presenting facts and fictions about the club,” he said. “Light refreshments will be served, and there will be a question-and-answer session
Bachman noted that the open house will provide plenty of information for prospective club members, imparted in a nontraditional way.
“I’m very focused on changing the conversation,” says Zeitler, who has two teenage daughters, ages 14 and 16. “Why don’t we talk about pads and tampons? ... I tell my girls, ‘You don’t have to be embarrassed by this topic.’ I want to help people who don’t have access to products most of us take for granted.”
Zeitler discovered I Support the Girls in late 2024. When she realized Lancaster no longer had an active chapter, she quickly stepped up. The hyperlocal aspect drew her in.
“I like that the bras you’re giving are not going to women in another state,” she said. “They’re going right back to local women. I also wanted to be sure these bras were going to women in need who were going to use them.”
I Support the Girls began 10 years ago when founder Dana Marlowe started the organization in the Washington, D.C., area. From one donated bra, the organization has grown to more than 40 million products donated over the past decade.

Overseen by an eight-member board, Faithful Give is a county-wide, online giving extravaganza that also promotes volunteering, committed prayer partnerships and general feelings of altruism. This year’s Faithful Give will be conducted over three days, from midnight on Sunday, Oct. 19, to midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
Contributors to Faithful Give can donate to a general fund or designate their donations to specific participating causes or nonprofits.
Donations to Faithful Give can be made by credit card, electronic fund transfer or e-check at https://faithfulgive .org/donate-sponsor.
“Faithful Give exists to support and advocate for faith-based, biblically faithful organizations in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “We’re not designed to compete; we’re focused on Faithful Give and what we do. Healthy competition can improve the outcome for all organizations. Generosity begets generosity.”
Faithful Give is also sponsoring two in-person events as part of this year’s initiative.
The first is a kickoff prayer breakfast that will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. Leaders and representatives of some of the charitable causes will be present to meet donors and answer questions.
Faithful Give will informally conclude its efforts with a community celebration event and expo on Oct. 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. at DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. Main St., Ephrata. That family-friendly gathering will feature bounce houses, a strolling magician, balloon animals, face painting, nine holes of miniature golf and fellowship.
“One hundred percent
of your money goes straight to where you designate it,” said Kieffer. “We encourage people to give to nonprofits throughout the year. Lancaster County people steward their money well. We’re really trying to expand our definition of generosity. The organizations I get behind most are the ones who have won my heart. It helps me to buy into their mission.”
Faithful Give, which does not maintain a physical office, is aiming to raise a total of $2 million for 130 Lancaster County causes like Christian schools, youth and college programs, adult programs, elderly care, human services and overseas organizations headquartered locally. Last year, Faithful Give raised more than $1.568 million from 2,933 donors.
“There are probably a thousand great causes in Lancaster County doing great work,” said Kieffer. “Faithful Give is designed to come alongside nonprofits with a Christian vision or a Christian philosophy of what benefits the community. Our goal isn’t to replace anything else. It’s to help in ways we can and feel called to.”
“The youth will be educated,” continued Kieffer, “the homeless will be cared for, families will find resources they need, the arts will be advanced in a way that will help the community, houses will be built, and early education programs will be supported. Some of these ministries cross over.”
Since its inception in 2023, Faithful Give has raised more than $2.3 million for local nonprofits.
“I think Lancaster County has a rich heritage of biblically led, faithful-led nonprofits,” said Kieffer. “Faithful Give exists to celebrate and nurture that and protect that mission for the future. Since it was started, it’s grown in number and in quality. It’s also grown in reputation. I think we’ve grown in trust with our donors, and we’ve grown in trust with our causes. We’ve delivered on what we’ve promised.”
Groups and individuals are cleaning up shared public spaces through Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Pick Up Pennsylvania program, supporting the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. The International Coastal Cleanup is an initiative to keep trash from reaching waterways and oceans.
Through Sunday, Nov. 30, while supplies last, volunteers will be provided with free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests when they register a cleanup with Pick Up Pennsylvania. Both waterway and land-based cleanups are eligible for the program since a significant portion of waterway pollution originates on land. Wind and rain wash litter into storm drains or directly into creeks and rivers that eventually flow to the ocean, where it impacts marine life, human health, and coastal economies.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is also sponsoring the Before and After category of the 2025 Pennsylvania Resources Council Gene Capaldi Lens on Litter photo contest. There will be one adult winner and one student winner, and each will receive a cash prize. To qualify, submissions in this category must be from a Pick Up Pennsylvania registered and
reported event. To enter the photo contest and view all rules and requirements, visit https://prc.org/what-we-do/ lens-on-litter-contest/.
Cleanup events must be registered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to receive the supplies, which will be provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, PennDOT, and the Ocean Conservancy. Members of the public may visit www.keeppabeautiful .org to join an existing cleanup event through the

Locally, Zeitler collects donations and works with partners including Second Grace, which supports young single mothers, and River’s Place, a free clothing closet at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim Township. She has also begun reaching out to local doctor’s offices, especially plastic surgeons, to encourage women undergoing breast surgery to donate their gently used bras.
At her job as a product manager at Armstrong, she regularly collects donations. And thanks to I Support the Girls national partnerships with major retailers like Victoria’s Secret, she receives shipments of new bras to distribute.
“I like to make sure there is diversity in what I’m giving away,” she said. “I want to have everything from sports bras to special occasions, from tween sizes to larger sizes.”
Her work has become a family effort. Her daughters, August and Citizen, pitch in with everything from social media posts to
sorting donations. They’ve also joined her at training sessions offered by the national nonprofit, turning the project into a shared mission of empowerment.
This year, Zeitler received a grant to create a permanent collection site in Lancaster. While she’s still searching for the right location, she continues to collect donations at her home and through temporary community partners. This fall, for example, a collection bin will be available at Pocket Books, 903 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, through October.
For Zeitler, the work is about more than just distributing products; it’s about starting conversations that too often remain in the shadows.
“I’m passionate about women’s causes,” she said. “We have very unique needs. Men don’t have to worry about having the right bras to go to work and feel professional or feel confident in their own skin. This is something I’m very passionate about, and doing this work literally
energizes me.”
She notes that her involvement in the project has raised her own awareness about community needs.
“Think about victims of domestic violence,” she said. “The police often collect undergarments as evidence, and these women are sent home without underwear. ... Girls literally miss school because they don’t have the proper hygiene products.”
It’s also important to Zeitler that donations stay in the local area.
“Everything that comes into us, whether it’s money, hygiene products or bras, it all goes right to women and girls right here in Lancaster,” she said. “This is really a boots-on-theground organization, and we are helping right where it’s needed.”

The club held a similar event in March with much success, he said, and the group decided to continue reaching out to the community for prospective members.

In the winter of 2023, the York Art Association (YAA) received the news that it would have to relocate from its longtime home on Marshall Street by June 2026. Since then, the organization, led by executive director Roth J. Preap, has launched a capital campaign and has been preparing to renovate the historic Little Green Church, 591 Linden Ave., York, as its new location.
On Sept. 14, YAA officially launched the public phase of its Art Transforming Capital Campaign, a $2 million initiative to ensure the future of visual arts in York County. Since the beginning of the campaign’s quiet phase in February 2025, donors and community partners have already pledged more than 60% of the total goal. YAA has received support not only from its members, but also from community members and local foundations.
The campaign will expand educational classrooms and spaces; modernize teaching facilities; and strengthen YAA’s role as a hub for creativity, connection, and cultural growth.
The campaign welcomes contributions of all sizes from individuals, businesses, and art enthusiasts. To learn more about the campaign or to donate, visit www.yorkartassociation .org/littlegreenchurch.

The mission statement of Handi-Vangelism (HVMI) specifies that the organization “exists to share the compassion of Christ by walking alongside individuals facing life’s challenges and equipping others to do the same.” With that goal in mind, the ministry focuses on three areas: disability, grief, and training. The disability ministry includes the summer day camps and a variety of Bible clubs and support groups. The grief ministry, called BASIS, provides Christian support groups for grieving parents throughout the county and beyond, and the training program offers workshops to help family members,
friends, and community leaders learn about what life is like with a disability or how to navigate the journey of grief.
“We are growing each year,” said Tara Kelley, director of disability ministries and training and equipping with HVMI. “We are dividing and adding programs as we see the needs of children shift and as the older ones (mature).”
Kelley emphasized that the ministry will continue to provide free services for individuals who need them regardless of age. “It never ends,” she said. “Individuals shift from group to group.”
Kelley backed up her words by pointing out that the ministry will start a

new preschool group for children with disabilities at the HVMI offices, 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, beginning on Monday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m. “It will be the fourth Monday of each month from October to April,” explained Kelley, who added this is the first time the ministry has held a group for preschoolers. “We will have a new daytime parent support meeting during that preschool group for parents who want to stay for coffee and to chat,” added Kelley.
HVMI Bible club programs for children, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities of all levels are held at HVMI. A few groups meet at local churches, including Akron Community Church and New Joy Church in Ephrata. “Because the groups are divided based on ability level and learning style, and behavior, it’s best to contact us (if you’re interested),” explained Kelley. “They are open to the public, and we welcome more people,” she added, noting that discerning the best group for an individual needs to be accomplished by working with a trained staff member. HVMI offers workshops in disability and grief for people who want to know
how to help friends or family members. “These training sessions are for people in the community and churches who wish to understand more about disabilities and grief,” explained Kelley, who added, “I have had grandparents who said, ‘I had no idea (this is how my grandchild felt)’ or ‘I finally understand why my grandchild acts this way,’” said Kelley, who noted workshops include topics such as autism and ADHD. “Adults with ADHD have said, ‘I now understand why I am the way I am or why my spouse is the way he is,’” shared Kelley. “It helps equip families to deal with the situation.”
Grief seminars are presented by HVMI founders Tim and Kathy Sheetz. “We have updated and adapted the information, and we are ready to go,” said Kelley who noted that sessions are held for the public, or a church or community organization can schedule one at their location. “We are here to help if they need it,” stated Kelley. Readers who are interested in Bible clubs or workshops may call 717-859-4777 and ask for Kelley.

The Lancaster Chapter Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will hold its next dinner meeting on Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. The social hour will begin at 5 p.m. with dinner and the meeting to follow.
The annual election of chapter officers and directors will take place at the meeting. The speaker for the evening will be the Honorable Jeffery Wright of the Lancaster Veterans Court.
Reservations are required by Monday, Oct. 13, by contacting Dennis Benchoff at 717-560-1260 or dlbenchoff2@comcast.net. For more information, visit www.moaalancaster chapt.org.
well. The ministry holds an annual breakfast and picnic. A new group, which is open to any bereaved parent or grandparent who has experienced the death of a child, is starting up this fall in New Holland. “(BASIS director Dan Steinman) has had more inquiries in the New Holland area,” shared Kelley, who noted that although the group will meet in the Prayer and Meditation Room at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, it will be open to the public. The group, which will meet the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m., will next gather on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Readers who are interested in the group may visit www.hvmi .org/grief-basis or call HVMI and ask for Steinman.
Several years ago, HVMI purchased a former golf course and built the current offices on part of the land.
The organization began to hold day camp there in 2021.
Two three-day sessions are now held each week during the months of June and July.
“That’s nine sessions over
six weeks,” explained Kyle Robinson, executive director of HVMI, who added that 123 campers took part this year. A year from now, construction on buildings for overnight camp is scheduled to begin. Proposed facilities include a multipurpose building, which will house a chapel, Bible classrooms, training rooms, and a large meeting room, along with a dining hall and kitchen. A second building behind the main one will provide dorm-style living with smaller rooms for campers with medical needs and staff members, meeting rooms, and an infirmary to make overnight camp available in the future. Outside, a pool, pavilion, and playground are planned. Already, carefully graded handicapped-accessible walkways traverse the hillside. By the summer of 2028, the organization plans to hold overnight camping at the facility. Fundraising to make the dream a reality is ongoing.

Lancaster Bible College (LBC), 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, will host a free Community Worship Night with worship leader, singer, and songwriter Lizzie Morgan on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Chapel.
The concert is being presented in conjunction with Junction Center Productions and WJTL and the vision of LBC senior and media arts production major Timothy Hemphill. Hemphill is planning, organizing, and executing the worship night as part of his LBC Communication & Media Arts Department senior project.
Morgan was raised in her grandparents’ church outside Nashville. From her first solo at the age of 5, Morgan knew she loved to sing. Once she started leading worship, she felt God’s calling on her life to do music full time. By the time she was 21, the door opened for Morgan to sing background vocals for Lauren Daigle. Four years later, Morgan transitioned to singing and touring with Maverick City Music and Red Worship. Her debut album, “Not My Will,” a live worship project recorded in Nashville, showcases a lifelong love for worship with tracks such as “Let the Alabaster Break,” “Ancient of Days,” “Can’t Help But Praise,” “Pull Me Close/Because He Lives” and “Not My Will.” Tickets for the free Community Worship Night may be reserved at www.thejunctioncenter .com/events.
