Bringing the Farmers Market to You

For many people, getting to a farmers market can be a challenge. Thanks to Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County, now the market can come to you.

Rolling Roots, a mobile farmers market, launched in Columbia on June 10. It’s available every Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. through the end of October.

“Rolling Roots is a discount farmers market on wheels bringing fresh, local food directly into neighborhoods, health care spaces, parks and other trusted community locations across Lancaster County,” said Amanda Frankeny, director of food justice for CAP. “By sourcing produce from local farmers and offering subsidized prices, the market helps make healthy food

both affordable and easy to access.”

Though Rolling Roots is open to everyone, the program was designed with neighbors in mind who may face barriers accessing

healthy food, including households living paycheck to paycheck, seniors and others with mobility challenges, people without reliable transportation and families

Navigating a Pet’s Final Journey

When a beloved pet is aging or nearing the end of its life, the emotional weight can feel overwhelming. That’s when Ashley Page steps in. As a certified end-of-life pet doula, she offers compassionate, nonmedical support to both pets and their people, helping families navigate aging, terminal illness and difficult end-of-life decisions with care and dignity.

“My role is to help families feel supported emotionally, practically and compassionately,” she said.

“That support can look very different depending on the family’s needs. Some people reach out because they need help understanding quality of life changes, while others are preparing for euthanasia, struggling with anticipatory grief or simply feeling overwhelmed caring for an aging pet.”

The Patriotic Cruisers

It’s a patriotic year for the Lancaster County Cruisers.

The group, which holds its annual car show on the first Saturday of July every year, will present this year’s show on Saturday, July 4, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street.

No registration is needed for the 26th annual show. Anyone wishing to participate can bring their cars, trucks and motorcycles. There is a fee to take part; the event will be held rain or shine. More than 20 trophies will be awarded, and the first 200 participants will receive a dash plaque.

Because of the event’s schedule, this year will not be the first time that it has been held over the holiday. Club member Judy Andrews said that she does not expect to lose attendees with the holiday weekend.

“It’s done by 2:00, so people still have time to go on and do fireworks and picnics,” she said.

The Cruisers will have T-shirts available for purchase at the show. There will also be door prizes available. For food, there will be breakfast, hot dogs, hamburgers and sausages available. Lemonade, as well as the Mocha Motion Coffee truck, will be available for drinks. There will also be a DJ, who will mix in some patriotic tunes to match the occasion.

One big advantage that the Cruisers have over other summer car shows is the pavilion at the fire company.

“I’ve been to lots of car shows, and Judy has too,” said club member Christine Weir, who noted that club members can also gives attendees rides from the

Red, White and Boom in Marietta

“This town has a passion for fireworks - big time,” said Gary Schatz, a lifelong resident of Marietta. “I think that’s why we’re so successful. The surrounding towns just love fireworks, too.”

Marietta Fireworks will take place on Saturday, July 4. The show will begin at 9:15 p.m. or when conditions permit, but the fun starts earlier. There are two locations that will host activities leading up to the display.

People are invited to War Memorial Park, 344 E. Walnut St., Marietta, to enjoy an old-fashioned carnival beginning at 4:30 p.m. The carnival will feature games, bounce houses, music and more.

“We’re doing food trucks, which we started doing last year, and we’re trying to bring a nostalgic-style carnival to the community,” Schatz said. “I want the community to come out, have a good time, meet people and have fun before the fireworks show.”

At Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, the pre-fireworks festivities will begin at 5 p.m. Activities at the church will include food

trucks, a barrel train for kids, yard games and entertainment from juggler Chris Ivey, beginning at 7 p.m.

The two options for viewing the fireworks each provide unique experiences, Schatz said.

“From the church, you’re up high, and that is a nice way to see the show,” he commented. “The park is ground level, so the show is all aerial. Plus, you get a better concussion off the mountains at the park.”

Fundraising for Marietta Fireworks is a year-round job for Schatz, who hosts booths at community events such as Marietta Day and the Cherry Blossom Festival, while also participating in Memorial Day parades to collect donations.

Marietta Fireworks has also begun selling memorabilia to raise money, including T-shirts, mugs, lanyards, jar openers and Schatz’s favorite - dog bandanas with paw prints and the word “fireworks” circled in red with a line through it.

In the past, Marietta Fireworks has enlisted volunteers to work a “bucket brigade,” wandering through the crowd at the event to collect donations. This year,

the group has changed its strategy.

“In addition to the merchandise, people can support us by donating from a QR code right from their car as they drive in or out of the event,” Schatz said, noting that signs will be displayed to make donating quick and easy.

With rising prices and increased tariffs, it’s getting more and more expensive to put on a quality fireworks show, but Schatz is determined to continue the community tradition.

“I’m always looking to the future, and I have my dollar sign in mind for what we can do,” he said. “We want to keep this a free event. We’re 100% free to attend, and people are watching our fireworks from a mile out in all directions. That’s why our show is different. I have to make sure I have shells that can get that height, so people can see it from anywhere.”

“There are not a lot of breaks in the show,” he said, noting that the majority of fireworks are set off electronically. “You’re going to see very few gaps where there’s nothing in the sky. That’s rare, and that’s hard to do.” Marietta Fireworks has grown increasingly popular over the past few years, Schatz said.

“It’s always very well-attended,” he said, encouraging people to arrive early. “I never want to say that we’re the best show, and I never want to say we’re the longest show, but it’s a pure community and family event, with a fantastic fireworks display to boot.”

Based in York, Page is the owner of Willow Bridge Crossings. She provides in-home services throughout the county as well as in Lancaster County, and she offers virtual grief support services anywhere through phone calls, text support, FaceTime or Zoom.

“I can help families create comfort-focused routines at home, make environmental adjustments for senior pets, talk through end-of-life planning, provide euthanasia presence and support, assist with memorial ideas and aftercare guidance and offer grief support before and after a loss,” she said.

She knows what it’s like to lose a pet and to feel alone in her grief.

“After unexpectedly losing my soul dog, Jackson, I found myself facing a kind of grief that many people didn’t fully understand,” she recalled. “There’s often this unspoken belief that losing a pet should somehow hurt less, but for many of us, these animals are family, companions and emotional anchors. I realized there were other people carrying that same grief while feeling unseen and unsupported, and I wanted to create a space where they didn’t have to go through it alone.”

With a background that includes more than 13 years of working professionally with animals through her business Allegiant Dog Walking, Page has also worked in veterinary offices, served as an animal control officer, worked as a professional dog trainer and is a certified pet CPR and First Aid instructor.

“I am also navigating life with my 16-year-old dachshund, Sullivan, who has dementia,” she said. “Caring for him has shown me firsthand how much support aging pets - and their people - truly need. From medication routines and environmental adjustments to the emotional weight of anticipatory grief, there are so many layers families are trying to manage.”

These experiences ultimately led Page to become a certified end-of-life pet doula and create Willow Bridge Crossings in 2025.

“My background has given me experience not only in animal behavior and

care, but also in supporting people through stressful and emotional situations involving their pets,” she said. “Becoming an end-oflife pet doula felt like a natural extension of the work I’ve already spent much of my life doing - caring for both animals and the humans who love them.”

Each client’s experience is different, she said, but all start with a free phone consultation to find the best support for each situation.

“Some people are looking for guidance with an aging pet, while others may need emotional support surrounding a recent diagnosis or upcoming euthanasia,” Page said. “From there, we discuss what services would feel most helpful and supportive for them.”

Page hopes her services will shine a light on the emotions that come with loving and losing a pet.

“I think one of the most important things I want people to understand is that grief over an animal is real and valid,” she said. “These relationships are incredibly deep, and the loss of a pet can impact someone just as profoundly as the loss of any beloved family member.”

She also wants to convey the message that providing pet doula services is about more than navigating a pet’s death.

“End-of-life support is not just about the final day,” she said. “In many cases, support begins much earlier - during the aging process, after a difficult diagnosis or when families begin noticing changes in their pet and feeling uncertain about what comes next.”

When serving as an end-of-life pet doula, Page hopes to help reduce some of the overwhelming and isolating aspects of a pet’s death, including the guilt and emotional exhaustion people can experience.

“My role is not to replace veterinary care, but to walk beside families through the emotional and practical parts of the journey with compassion and without judgment,” she said. “Sometimes people simply need someone who understands how profound this bond and loss truly are.”

The ServSafe Food Safety Manager course will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, July 14 and 21, in Room 113

at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The exam will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28.

ipants how to prevent contamination by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving food and by sanitizing food service facilities. The course

“By bringing the market directly into communities, Rolling Roots helps make healthy choices more convenient, welcoming and realistic in everyday life,” she explained. “Rolling Roots also supports Lancaster County farmers by purchasing produce directly from local growers and reinvesting dollars back into the local agricultural economy.”

And the program also connects food access with long-term community health by partnering with organizations focused on health care, nutrition education, recreation and community

well-being. Rolling Roots’ partners include Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Penn State Health, Union Community Care, the Lancaster city health department, Lancaster Rec, various local farms - including Homefields Care Farm, Bay Street Community Garden and Wittel Farmand many other community organizations.

During the current season, Rolling Roots will operate three weekly mobile markets.

The Columbia location, at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Twin Rose, 307 N. Seventh St., partners with the Food Farmacy “Food is Medicine” program,

connecting fresh food access with nutrition counseling and health care support for patients and the broader Columbia community.

Additional Rolling Roots markets will be held at Union Community Care, 304 N. Water St., Lancaster, on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon; and at Rodney Park Splash Pad, 200 Crystal St., Lancaster, on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

As Frankeny explained, the idea for Rolling Roots grew out of years of food access work across Lancaster County.

“Through food pantry programs, health care partnerships, coalition

work with Hunger-Free Lancaster County and hunger mapping efforts, we repeatedly saw the same barriers: rising food costs; transportation challenges; limited grocery access; and difficulty finding healthy, affordable produce close to home,” she said. “We also recognized a growing number of working individuals and families who earn too much to qualify for traditional food assistance programs but still struggle to afford groceries and other everyday essentials. Rolling Roots was created to help bridge that gap by offering subsidized local food at lower prices in

locations that are easier to access.”

CAP used Lancaster County’s Hunger Mapping Project, which is community-based research led through partnerships across the county, to identify where food insecurity and transportation barriers overlap, guiding where markets could have the greatest impact. Rolling Roots is also designed to support local suppliers of produce.

“We see many local farmers are also facing economic challenges,” Frankeny said.

“By purchasing produce directly from Lancaster County farmers and paying fair prices for their products, Rolling Roots helps support local agriculture while making healthy food more affordable and accessible for the community.”

Rolling Roots is open to anyone, and the market accepts both cash and credit cards. Participants in the Food Farmacy program also receive a monthly gift card to use toward produce. Plans are in the works to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) bene-

fits later in the season.

“We’ve also seen a strong ‘community helping community’ spirit grow through the market,” Frankeny noted. “Some neighbors who are able to do so have chosen to ‘pay it forward’ by donating extra funds to help cover produce costs for someone shopping that day. It’s become a meaningful way for community members to directly support and care for one another.”

Frankeny invites people to come and check out Rolling Roots firsthand.

“Rolling Roots is meant to feel welcoming, fun and community-centered. The produce is a deal, local and high quality, and we often include music, recipes, nutrition education and activities for families and children,” she said. “At its heart, Rolling Roots is about helping communities thrive by making healthy food easier to access, supporting local farmers and creating stronger connections across Lancaster County.”

Native Plant Kit Sale Planned

The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program will offer its watershed-friendly native plant kit sale through Saturday, July 4, or until sold out. Designed for both beginner and experienced gardeners, the kits offer native plants, which provide essential habitat for wildlife - including pollinators and fireflies - while helping to improve soil health, reduce runoff, and protect local waterways. Customers will also receive optional planting designs for each of the kit themes. The plants in the kits are intended for fall planting.

This year’s options will include the America250 Kit, inspired by the colors red, white, and blue. It features Canada anemone, bee balm, Culver’s root, blue vervain, and little bluestem for long-season color and pollinator appeal.

The Curbside Appeal Kit is ideal for tough, compacted soils like roadside strips and parking areas. It includes nodding onion, butterfly milkweed, blazing star, wild petunia, and prairie dropseed.

The Tough-as-Nails (Drought-Tolerant) Kit is

built for resilience in hotter, drier conditions. It features wild bergamot, hairy beardtongue, spiderwort, big bluestem, and purple love grass. Also available is the Firefly-Friendly Kit, which supports the full life cycle of fireflies. It consists of wrinkle-leaf goldenrod, purple-stemmed aster, New York ironweed, silver sedge, and tufted hair grass.

Two size options are available: one offering five plants of each of five species, for a total of 25 plants, and a lower-priced kit offering a total of five plants - one of each species. Single-species kits are also available for select plants, giving gardeners the flexibility to expand existing plantings or focus on favorites; two sizes are available: 25 plants or five plants.

All plants are grown as plugs by Kind Earth Growers using locally collected, open-pollinated seed and a 50% peat-free growing medium. Although smaller than typical nursery plants, these plugs may quickly establish due to their strong root systems that grow in the warm fall soils, while the above-ground growth is

limited in the cool air.

All kits are grown to order. In the rare case that a species does not germinate successfully, a comparable native substitute may be provided to ensure quality.

In the southcentral part of the state, plants will be available for pickup in Berks, Chester, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties in early fall. All orders must be placed in advance; plants will not be available for purchase at pickup sites.

Program to Include Bubbles

Bubble magician River Barry will offer a familyfriendly performance, “A Magical Bubble Adventure,” at Kreutz Creek Library, 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam, on Friday, July 17, at 10:30 a.m. The event is part of the York County Libraries’ SummerQuest program.

LCCTC Students Compete at National Event

Three students from Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) recently traveled to Atlanta, Ga., to compete at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. The event took place from June 1 to 5. Carly Hoffman placed

first in the Dental Assisting - Secondary competition, and Ashton Gonzalez placed first in the Dental Assisting - Postsecondary competition. Both are students in the Dental Assistant program at LCCTC’s Willow Street campus. Hoffman is from Elizabeth-

town Area School District.

In addition, Alyssa Nessinger participated in the Advertising Design competition, placing 13th. Nessinger is from Cocalico School District and is enrolled in the Commercial Art program at LCCTC’s Brownstown campus.

The course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the ServSafe Manager book, learning materials, and exam. The deadline to register for the course and exam is Tuesday, July 7.

The TAP Online Food Safety Manager Certification course will also be offered. This course helps food service managers, chefs, caterers, cooks, health officials, and inspectors prepare to take a Food Protection Manager certification exam, such as ServSafe.

The online course is self-paced, can be started anytime throughout the year, and must be completed within 180 days of enrollment. While the online portion can be taken anytime, the exam is conducted in

person. There is a fee.

Participants who complete the in-person or online course and pass the proctored multiple-choice exam with a score of 70% or higher will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certificate is valid for five years.

A third option, the Food Safety Manager Certification Prep Course, will be available as a live online webinar that will prepare participants for the certification exam. Participants will receive live instruction from food safety experts

without needing to travel.

A textbook will be mailed before the first day’s class. After the course, participants can choose from several certification exam options, available in multiple languages. There are separate fees for the course and the exam. Participants are responsible for registering and paying for their chosen exam.

All course and exam options meet the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture requirements for the Food Employee Certification Act.

Hogs and Heroes Foundation, a community of motorcycle riders who support military causes, will have a stand.

Those attending the car show are asked to bring nonperishable canned goods to support the food pantry at the Willow Street United Church of Christ (UCC).

Proceeds from the registration fees and bake sale will be donated to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Hope’s Haven, Building Bridges, and Willow Street UCC.

The weather was not great for last year’s show, but the event still pulled in around 350 vehicles. Weir said that the show typically pulls in around 300 to 400 vehicles, depending on weather and when the event falls on the calendar.

“We’ve always lucked out pretty good with the weather,” Andrews said.

“That’s why we started doing it rain or shine, because it’s too confusing for the food vendors to come when they have stuff the next day, then they can’t come.”

The club has been in existence since 1994. It meets on the second Sunday of every month at 6 p.m. at Willow Street UCC, 2723 Willow Street Pike North, Willow Street. Everyone is welcome to attend, even if they do not own a classic or antique car.

“We just like the people that are in it,” Andrews said. Weir added that the club is looking for new members to come to the show and to bring their significant other.

The club’s other major events include an annual Christmas party; outings to local restaurants; and trips to the Morgantown Auto Mall, located right on the border between Lancaster, Chester and Berks counties.

Award Nominations Sought

As community hosts in partnership with Weave: The Social Fabric Project at the Aspen Institute, the Lancaster County Community Foundation and Lancaster County Local Journalism Fund are launching a fouryear effort to find, support, and celebrate everyday neighbors who are building trust, nurturing belonging, and weaving the social fabric in the community. Through this year’s Weaver Awards, 20 local individuals or small organizations will be selected to receive $2,500 each to support their work fostering connection in Lancaster County. The Weaver Awards are a way the community can amplify and support the everyday people in local neighborhoods, schools, places of worship, and jobs who are weaving threads of connection through the community.

Nominations are open, and nominees must be residents of Lancaster County who are age 18 and older. While many people in Lancaster County are serving their neighbors, the Weaver

Awards are intended for those whose projects also create lasting relationships and build trust as people work together to strengthen their community and weave a tighter social fabric.

The application is intentionally simple, asking questions about the people involved, their project, and their community. Local nonprofit organizations with an operating budget less than $250,000 are also encouraged to apply. Nominations will close on Friday, July 24.
