Where Art Meets the Outdoors BY CAT SHANNON
Artist Marita Hines and other members of Marietta Art Alive want people to appreciate the outdoor world. In 2021, they organized the first River Towns Plein Air event, named for the style of painting outside. This year’s event will take place from Saturday, April 18, through Sunday, May 3, in and around Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. The festivities will begin on April 18 with an Artist Quick R127037
Draw competition, which will run from 1 to 5 p.m. “ T his year ’s quick draw is sponsored by the Marietta Area Business Association and will take place during the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival on Front Street in Marietta,” Hines explained. The competition invites the public to see the Cherry Blossom Festival from an artist’s perspective. Top Athletes Will Be Honored BY CAT SHANNON
Lancaster County is brimming with athletic talent, and this May, standout figures will be celebrated with induction into the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. The organization will hold its annual Awards Night and Dinner on Saturday, May 2, at the Bachman Center, located on the campus of Homestead Village, 633 Community Way, Lancaster. The event will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Inductees will be George Derbyshire, for coaching and athletic administration; Robert Gramola, for officiating; Duane Koser, for track and field; Ryan Strickler, for football and basketball; Scott Vandergrift, for golf; and James Walk Jr., athlete and coach. Additionally, Regina Fisher will be honored with the Community Service Award, and Aliya Mobley will be recognized with the Courageous Athlete Award. Derbyshire, known affectionately as “Derby,” has been a fixture at Manheim Central High School for the past 50 years, having served as a teacher, coach, trainer and athletic director. He has coached wrestling, cross-country and football, in addition to being the administrator of all athletic activities at Manheim Central. Gramola was named Official of the Year by the Lancaster Football Chapter in both 1995 and 2008. He is a 41-year member of the PIAA as a football and basketball official and has worked in numerous leagues. Koser, a 1986 graduate of Donegal High School, was a
