who portrays patriarch Gomez Addams. “They don’t want Morticia, the mom, to find out about the relationship.”

Daughter Wednesday has fallen in love with a normal boy.
That’s the premise of the musical “The Addams Family,” which will be presented by Columbia High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, through Saturday, March 28, with
“The Addams family is a different kind of family; they operate outside of traditional customs and norms, so when Wednesday falls in love with Lucas Beineke, who comes from a normal family, it causes a problem,” explained Ethan McNair,
Ethan continued, “A lot of the plot centers on Gomez wanting to help his daughter but not wanting to keep a secret from his wife and Morticia trying to figure out what’s going on with Gomez and her daughter. It’s just a lot of fun.”

Describing the community Easter event his church has held for several years, Wrightsville Assembly of God lead pastor Aaron McNatt said the event has two purposes: It’s designed to bring people together and to celebrate the season.
“Egg Fest is a fun, safe and inexpensive opportunity for parents in our community to bring their kids to,” he shared. “And for those without young kids who just want to get out and enjoy springtime with the community, we have some great food trucks. And you’re never too old for a photo with the Easter Bunny!”
Egg Fest will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Lancaster Chapter, National Railway Historical Society (NRHS), which aims to preserve history and railroad artifacts, as well as educate the public about railroading and its history, is in the middle of celebrating its 90th anniversary.
According to a history of the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS, provided by chapter historian Linda Himpsl, it began in 1934 when a few young railroad and trolley enthusiasts met in an old trolley in Neffsville, forming the Lancaster Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. In 1935, the group merged with the Interstate Trolley Club and other organizations to form the NRHS. The Lancaster Chapter was the first charter organized in the NRHS, launching on Oct. 13, 1935.
Today, chapter meetings are held in the 1882 freight station in Christiana, which was restored by the chapter in 1998. Members, who come from various backgrounds, all share a love of railroading. “Most people have an interest in railroads, history or just trains in general. Very few of us actually worked for the railroad,” noted Steve Himpsl, second director. “Some have model trains. They are avid collectors.”
“Some have fathers or grandfathers who worked the railroad,” added Linda.
Last October, chapter members and invited guests celebrated the

Ethan noted that portraying a well-known character such as Gomez has both benefits and challenges.

“When it comes to playing somebody so iconic, that’s something I’m new to on stage,” he said, noting that he’s taking inspiration from the original “Addams Family” 1960s sitcom and the Broadway musical. “It’s been a bit of an obstacle for me, because obviously I appear younger, so I’m trying to figure out how to operate around that and still give a high-quality, immersive performance.”
Aidan Morales portrays Mal Beineke, the father of Lucas.
“He gives off a fake personality that everything’s fine, but deep down, he has his own problems, especially with his marriage, and you’ll see that in the show,” Aidan said.
Based on the Broadway
musical of the same name, Columbia’s show will be the school edition, meaning it’s slightly shorter than the full-length show, with a few tweaks to the plot.
The main story and the characters are the same, including the presence of the Ancestors, said Makenzie Kuhn, who plays a bride ancestor.
“We’re there guiding the story, helping to keep Wednesday and Lucas together,” she explained.
“The Addams family members can see us, but Lucas’ family can’t.”
The show features a cast of about 40 students, including Zooey Minnick, who plays Wednesday; Daniel Jones, who plays Lucas; Amaya Farley, who portrays Morticia; Gage Wolf, who plays Uncle Fester; and Charlotte Warfel, who plays Pugsley.
One of the most memorable members of the Addams
family, the disembodied hand called Thing, is also in the show. Luke Whitson will operate a puppet to portray Thing in some scenes, and he’ll drive a remote-controlled Thing in other scenes.
The sets, costumes and props all add to the show’s immersive feel, said Kyovany Woodard, a member of the stage crew.
He noted that the students take a hands-on role with the set and props, some of which have been 3-D printed.
Kyovany said audiences can expect to be entertained by the musical.
“It’s a pretty wacky show, over the top all around,” he said. “There’s lots of comedy.”
Makenzie agreed, adding, “The characters are wellknown, and the storyline will unite everyone in the audience, young and old.”
While there’s no doubt the Addams family members
are a bit quirky, the show still contains some deeper themes, Aidan said.
“It’s a show about growth,” he stated. “It’s about understanding that it’s OK to adjust your beliefs, and it’s healthy to learn and grow, even if it’s out of your comfort zone.”
Ethan said he’s excited to perform a show that he believes represents the talent of Columbia’s students, a sentiment echoed by his peers.
“This show is really bringing out what Columbia has to offer in the theater program,” he said. “A lot of people are stepping up vocally and in the dance performances. You’ll see what Columbia can do, and you’ll see a show that is going to be very enjoyable to watch.”
Tickets for “The Addams Family” will be available at the door. All seating is general admission.

the annual Save the Bay Photo Contest sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF).
Photo submissions should illustrate the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, as well as the plants, animals, and people relying on it. Images depicting water, wildlife, recreation, farms, and flora will be considered.

In last year’s Save the Bay Photo Contest, the photograph “River’s Bend” by George Kurzik of Hellam won the top prize from judges. His entry captured the view from Chiques Rock in Lancaster County overlooking the bend in the Susquehanna River toward Accomac in York County in 2023.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 27.
Photos will be narrowed down by a CBF panel based on subject matter, composition, focus, lighting, uniqueness, and impact. Members of the public will then be able to vote for their favorite image in the Viewer’s Choice Gallery from Monday, April 6, to Friday, April 24.
Winners will receive a one-year CBF membership and a cash prize. Winning photographs will also be featured on CBF’s website, social media, 2027 calendar, and award-winning Save the Bay magazine.
More information and submission instructions can be found at www.cbf.org/ photocontest.

on Saturday, April 4. It will be held in the parking lot of Eastern York High School, 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville.
While it incorporates the idea of an Easter egg hunt, the event will offer a unique opportunity for people to experience the typical Easter activity.
“Egg Fest is different from a traditional Easter egg hunt. Kids can visit egg stations and collect candy-filled eggs,” McNatt explained. “As they travel to the different egg stations, they collect stamps on their Egg Fest maps, which can then be turned in for a prize.”
Along the way, kids and their families can enjoy face painting, photos with the Easter Bunny, a craft station, a bounce house, an inflatable obstacle course and inflatable ax throwing.
“We have also invited several food trucks: Eastern York Rotary Club’s Fries and Chicken, Joe’s Fish Sandwiches, Noel’s Cafe, the PA Dairymen’s Association milkshakes and Pappy’s BBQ,” he said. “Guests at the event can purchase lunch or a sweet treat at the trucks.”
With the exception of food for purchase, all of the activities will be offered free of charge.

“The event is comeand-go, so families can arrive anytime and stay for as long as they’d like,” he said.
Wrightsville Assembly of God has been holding community Easter events for many years. Over time, the festivities outgrew the church’s space.
“We love hosting community events like this because it gives us the opportunity to bring joy and light to our neighbors,” McNatt said. “Having it at Eastern York High School gives us enough space to accommodate the hundreds of cars that will fill the parking lots.”
Wrightsville Assembly of God will also hold Palm Sunday and Easter services at Eastern York High School’s Performing Arts Center. The Palm Sunday service will take place on March 29 at 10 a.m. On Easter Sunday, April 5, there will be services at 9 and 11 a.m. For all Sunday services, nursery and preschool care will be available. A kids’ church service, for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, will be held simultaneously with the regular service.

New Bridgeville Fire Company, 2870 Furnace Road, Red Lion, will offer a breakfast on Saturday, March 28, from 7 to 10 a.m. The meal will include pancakes, eggs, sausage,

There will be separate ticket prices for adults and children ages 5 to 12. Children age 4 and under may eat for free.
The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group will accept proposals for the next round of its Green Project grants through Tuesday, March 31. Lancaster County organizations with projects that promote sustainability, expand environmental awareness, and improve green infrastructure are encouraged to apply.
The program annually awards grants of up to $500 to charitable, educational, or business entities that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of “exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet” in Lancaster County. Over the past decade, 110 organizations have received these grants, supporting a wide range of environmental conservation projects.
Before applying for a grant, organizations should consider how their projects relate to ecological preservation or education. Projects may focus on topics such as storm water management, rain gardens and rain barrels, native plantings,
pollinator plants, organic gardens, composting programs, and hands-on learning. The Lancaster Group will offer its expertise and labor to support the projects that are awarded grants.
Proposals should be emailed to jimsmeenan@ gmail.com and include the organization’s name, mailing address, and phone number; highlights of the project; and a 501(c)(3) status letter if the submission is from a 501(c)(3) group.
Winners will be announced on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, and soon after, a list of the awardees will be posted at www.lancaster sierraclub.org.
The grant program has been supported by funds raised primarily through the Lancaster Group’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike and from funds received through its participation in Lancaster’s annual ExtraGive. For more details, contact Jim Meenan at 717-4750586 or jimsmeenan @gmail.com.

milestone during a chapter meeting at the freight station where they enjoyed cake and ice cream and a display of memorabilia dating from 1934 to the present.
There was also a chapter banquet held at Hershey Farm Resort in November. Tony White, NRHS president, presented the Lancaster Chapter a Certificate of Recognition for its 90th anniversary and for being the first charter chapter of the organization. In addition to Steve and Linda, accepting the certificate were Tom Shenk, president; Glenn Kendig, first vice president; Cindy Kendig, first director; Richard Ruttledge, treasurer; David Stambaugh, second vice president; and member Gayle Stambaugh.
One of the chapter’s major accomplishments was the restoration of the freight station, located at 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana. Notably, the station was featured in the 1985 movie “Witness” starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.
According to Linda, the two-story building was moved east 40 feet to its present location in 1903 to install additional
track. Passenger service ceased in 1907, when the new Christiana passenger station on the opposite side of the tracks was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad; it terminated service in 1952. Amtrak now leases the 1888 freight station building, gang house, 1907 passenger station and trackside property to the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS. The chapter also maintains a Conrail caboose on-site.
In addition to a holiday open house held during Christmas in Christiana, the stations is open for tours by appointment.
“We have a deck and we often have people come and hang out on the deck and watch the trains,” Steve said. “We want to get people into the station and to view the caboose.”
The Lancaster Chapter, NRHS members have restored, preserved and donated many train- and rail-related projects to Lancaster County and surrounding communities through the years, including a trolley from Lancaster, a Reading Railroad Company crossing watchman’s box and various railroad cars. The chapter has also orga -

nized Amtrak rail trips to many places, including Horseshoe Curve; western Pennsylvania; and Mystic Seaport, Conn. “Amtrak would add passenger cars on their trains to accommodate how many tickets were sold,” Steve explained. “We would sell 18-car trains.”
The group generally meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Meetings usually feature a guest speaker or a slideshow of railroad history. Outings are also planned. “We (might meet) at Strasburg Rail Road and ride the train, and when it comes back we have our meeting on the train. We mix it up,” noted Linda.
Members pay a yearly fee, which gets them the Lancaster Dispatcher, the
chapter’s monthly newsletter. New members are welcome. “Many young people are not interested in railroading anymore because they did not grow up with it,” noted Steve. “We are more than happy to have young people come in and join us.”
More information about the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS, including upcoming meetings, is available at www.nrhs1.org or www .facebook.com/Christiana FreightStation. For more information or to schedule a tour of the freight station, contact Steve at shimpsl@aol.com.
Additionally, the first floor of the freight station is available for rent and can accommodate 60 to 80 people. If interested, email cindykendig@gmail.com.

Ninety percent of the tuition fees are covered by local sportsmen’s clubs and community organizations. Students are responsible for a registration fee upon acceptance to the program.
To receive an application, contact the LCCD at 717-299-5361, ext. 5, or visit www.lancaster conservation.org and look under “Education.” Applications must be submitted by Friday, June 5.
Students will gain knowledge about wildlife and conservation, leadership experience, and communication skills. Topics will include stream restoration, forestry, canoeing, wildlife management, archery, survival, and firearm safety. Students will have the opportunity to meet professionals in various environmental and conservation-related fields and discuss career options with them.
