The morbidly charming Addams family has a problem.
Daughter Wednesday has fallen in love with a normal boy. That’s the premise of the musical “The Addams Family,” which will be presented by Columbia High School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, through Saturday, March 28, with an
additional performance at 2 p.m. on March 28. It will be performed in the high school auditorium, 901 Ironville Pike.
“The Addams family is a different kind of family; they operate outside of traditional customs and norms, so when Wednesday falls in love with Lucas Beineke, who comes from a normal family, it causes a problem,” explained Ethan
McNair, who portrays patriarch Gomez Addams. “They don’t want Morticia, the mom, to find out about the relationship.”
Ethan continued, “A lot of the plot centers on Gomez wanting to help his daughter but not wanting to keep a secret from his wife and Morticia trying to figure out what’s going on with Gomez and her daughter. It’s just a lot of fun.”
See “The Addams Family” pg 6
The event will feature food, door prizes, basket giveaways, 20 rounds of regular bingo, four special bingo games, a 50/50 drawing, a pick-your-prize bingo and more.
“Our famous grab bags will be back again with even more surprises inside, but get them quick because they sell out every year,” said Cheryl Schmidt, fundraising coordinator for the Columbia Dream Center. “New this year will be the sale of pull tabs with cash prizes. Basically, there is something for everyone!”
Bingo prizes will include designer handbags, Yeti products, tools, cash and more.
People are encouraged to come hungry to the event.

In the kitchen at St. Paul Episcopal Church in Columbia, Easter is made by hand, thousands of times over. For the past several weeks, volunteers have gathered on Mondays and Tuesdays to make the church’s famous chocolate-covered Easter eggs, a decades-old tradition that is both a fundraiser and a labor of love.
“It’s quite a detailed and involved process,” said the
Rev. Martha Harris. “It requires dozens of volunteers.”
The work begins long before the chocolate is melted. Volunteer Deb Wasche collects the orders, shops for ingredients and supplies and oversees the morning crew. That group mixes the fillings and handrolls the eggs before placing them in the refrigerator to firm up. Later in the day, an evening crew arrives to dip the chilled eggs in chocolate. Beth Runkle supervises the evening team.

“We will be selling hot dogs, sodas, water, walking tacos, mac and cheese, veggie cups, fruit cups, chicken corn soup, pulled pork sandwiches and a variety of baked goods,” said Jenn Hollinger, director of outreach ministries for the center.
Proceeds from the event will be used to further the mission of the Columbia Dream Center.
“Columbia Dream Center exists to provide food, shelter, clothing and resources to Columbia and the surrounding areas,” Hollinger

Intro to Power Tools: Build a Picnic Bench will be held on Saturday, March 28, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In this hands-on course, attendees will be taught how to safely use the most common power tools - the circular saw, jig saw, drill, driver, and miter saw - while working together to build a full-size picnic bench for the Horn Farm Center’s farmhouse lawn. Participants will learn how to measure and mark wood; understand tool settings and blade types; make straight and curved cuts; assemble with pocket-hole joinery; and choose fasteners for strong, long-lasting outdoor projects. They will also explore additional hand and power tools that can help make future home or garden improvement projects feel approachable and achievable. The deadline to register is Wednesday, March 18.
Critter Crawl: Salamanders will take place on March 28 from 6 to
7:30 p.m. The class will begin with a short presentation on safety protocols, ethical handling practices, a background on these amphibians and their habitats, and local salamander identification techniques. Then, attendees will embark on a “critter crawl” around Horn Farm, where they will venture off paths and into wet or muddy areas to discover salamanders. Spotting salamanders is not guaranteed and will depend on factors such as the weather. Participants should bring a headlamp of flashlight, waterproof boots, bright-colored clothes for the outdoors, a head covering to protect from ticks, long pants and socks, and a raincoat or poncho. The class will take place rain or shine. Participants of all ages are welcome, but children age 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Meet a Mini Forest: The Miyawaki Method will be offered on Sunday, March 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Developed in the mid-20th century by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, the Miyawaki Method is a planting technique used to promote the rapid establishment of woodland vegetation on otherwise depleted

Some observed outcomes of the method are slowing and stopping erosion, filtering water and contaminants, bolstering habitat, and educating communities deprived of regular contact with nature.

“Just this week alone, we had orders for 850 eggs,” Wasche shared. “We make the eggs for the six weeks leading up to Holy Week, so each year, we make thousands of eggs.”
The eggs come in a variety of flavors.
“We have peanut butter in light and dark chocolate, peanut butter crispy in light and dark chocolate, and then coconut, butter cream, cherry and orange, all in dark chocolate,” she said.
The church has been holding the fundraiser for more than 40 years, Wasche noted, adding that she has been involved for more than 15 years.
“It’s the church’s recipe, and it’s been the same recipe for years and years,” she said. “We don’t deviate from it. When you have a good thing, you want to keep doing it.”
Harris noted that when the fundraiser began, several churches in Columbia sold Easter eggs each spring. Today, she believes St. Paul is the only church in town still making
them.
Each week, Wasche prepares batches of filling in the church kitchen. Bowls of the mixture are then handed off to volunteers, who weigh 1-ounce portions, roll them into egg shapes and place them on trays.
“I’m a roller,” said Bill Weinberg, who has been volunteering with the project for about 10 years. “I got involved because the church needed help, and I wanted to help.”
Asked how many eggs the group has made over the years, Weinberg laughed, adding, “As many as there are stars in the sky.”
Volunteer Tony Abramo handles the weighing of the filling portions. He said he joined the effort simply because he wanted to lend a hand.
“I never made eggs before this,” he said, noting that he has been volunteering for about five years.
Added Weinberg, “I never made them either before I started doing this, but I had eaten a lot of them.”
For volunteer Bill Clark, making eggs is a way to stay busy while
his wife helps at the church’s food pantry, which operates during the same hours.
“This isn’t our church,” he said. “We belong to Holy Trinity Catholic, but my wife was asked to stay and help with the eggs, which she did, and she talked me into it, too.”
Most of the same volunteers return each week, with about 10 people helping in the morning and a slightly smaller crew in the evening.
“We all love the camaraderie,” said volunteer Pat Dancause, whose favorite flavor of eggs is the orange cream.
Clark agreed.
“It’s fun to talk, to shoot the breeze while we work,” he said.
Asked why people should consider buying St. Paul’s eggs, the volunteers don’t hesitate to answer.
“These are the best around,” Dancause said. “It’s the love that goes into them. They’re handmade with love.”
Wasche credits quality ingredients, including high-quality chocolate and fresh additions such

as orange zest, with helping to make the eggs so popular.
Along with preorders, eggs are sold at several locations in and around Columbia, including Hinkle’s Restaurant, Stover’s News Agency and Kindred Collections, as well as Sue’s Food Market in Wrightsville.
Proceeds from the sales help maintain the historic church building, located at 340 Locust St. in Columbia.
“There’s always maintenance that has to be done in a church this old,” Wasche said.
Wasche, whose favorite flavor is the peanut butter crispy with light chocolate, said the fundraiser holds special meaning for her.
“I love this church,” she said. “I’ve been a member since I was a baby. I was baptized here, confirmed here and married here.”
Wasche added that she’s grateful to be part of the team that keeps the tradition going.
“I’m so thankful for our volunteers,” she said. “They really help to keep the process moving along. We wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”
And for the volunteers who gather each week, the eggs are about more than chocolate and sugar. They’re a sweet tradition, one that blends faith, friendship and lots of careful handwork, ensuring that a simple Easter treat continues to bring the Columbia community together, one handmade egg at a time.
Eggs are available individually, by the half-dozen and by the dozen. They must be preordered by calling the church at 717-684-8496, emailing admin@saintpaulcolumbia.org or purchasing through a parishioner. The deadline for the final week of orders is Saturday, March 21. Eggs may be picked up between 10 a.m. and noon on Sunday, March 29.

“The Addams Family”
Ethan noted that portraying a well-known character such as Gomez has both benefits and challenges.
“When it comes to playing somebody so iconic, that’s something I’m new to on stage,” he said, noting that he’s taking inspiration from the original “Addams Family” 1960s sitcom and the Broadway musical. “It’s been a bit of an obstacle for me, because obviously I appear younger, so I’m trying to figure out how to operate around that and still give a high-quality, immersive performance.”
Aidan Morales portrays Mal Beineke, the father of Lucas.
“He gives off a fake personality that everything’s fine, but deep down, he has his own problems, especially with his marriage, and you’ll see that in the show,” Aidan said.
Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, Columbia’s show will be the school edition, meaning it’s slightly shorter than the full-length show, with a few tweaks to the plot.
The main story and the characters are the same, including the presence of the Ancestors, said
Makenzie Kuhn, who plays a bride ancestor.
“We’re there guiding the story, helping to keep Wednesday and Lucas together,” she explained.
“The Addams family members can see us, but Lucas’ family can’t.”
The show features a cast of about 40 students, including Zooey Minnick, who plays Wednesday; Daniel Jones, who plays Lucas; Amaya Farley, who portrays Morticia; Gage Wolf, who plays Uncle Fester; and Charlotte Warfel, who plays Pugsley.
One of the most memorable members of the Addams family, the disembodied hand called Thing, is also in the show. Luke Whitson will operate a puppet to portray Thing in some scenes, and he’ll drive a remote-controlled Thing in other scenes.
The sets, costumes and props all add to the show’s immersive feel, said Kyovany Woodard, a member of the stage crew.
He noted that the students take a hands-on role with the set and props, some of which have been 3-D printed.
Kyovany said audiences can expect to be entertained by the
musical.
“It’s a pretty wacky show, over the top all around,” he said. “There’s lots of comedy.”
Makenzie agreed, adding, “The characters are well-known, and the storyline will unite everyone in the audience, young and old.”
While there’s no doubt the Addams family members are a bit quirky, the show still contains some deeper themes, Aidan said.
“It’s a show about growth,” he stated. “It’s about understanding that it’s OK to adjust your beliefs, and it’s healthy to learn and grow, even if it’s out of your comfort zone.”
Ethan said he’s excited to perform a show that he believes represents the talent of Columbia’s students, a sentiment echoed by his peers.
“This show is really bringing out what Columbia has to offer in the theater program,” he said. “A lot of people are stepping up vocally and in the dance performances. You’ll see what Columbia can do, and you’ll see a show that is going to be very enjoyable to watch.”
Tickets for “The Addams Family” will be available at the door. All seating is general admission.
