Cooking With Pressure for a Purrpose

Three chefs will prove they’re cool cats in the heat of the kitchen when they participate in Chopped for Charity, a culinary competition. And actual cats (plus other furry friends) will be the beneficiaries of the event, with proceeds supporting the Columbia Animal Shelter.

Chopped for Charity will be held on Saturday, March 21, at The Country Barn, 211 Donerville Road, Lancaster. It will run from 6 to 9 p.m.

The festivities will start with a buffet dinner, and guests will be treated to inspiring stories about Columbia Animal Shelter’s impact, said Tammy L. Jalbert, executive director.

At 7:30 p.m., the culinary showdown will begin. Inspired by Food Network’s “Chopped,” the event will test the skills of the competitors and provide entertainment for the guests.

Conference Will Address Cultural Challenges to Faith

“Our country was founded on a Judeo-Christian worldview,” said Dan Blank, pastor of Reich’s Evangelical Congregational (E.C.) Church in Marietta. “In these times in which we live, it is very important for Christians to know not only what we believe, but why we believe it. We need to understand our times and how we arrived at this point and what we as Christians can do to engage our culture today for Jesus Christ.”

With that in mind, the church will host a live Christian worldview conference called “Understanding Our Times and Biblical Path Forward,” featuring Del Tackett. Tackett is the producer and teacher of “The Truth Project,” produced in partnership with Focus on the Family; the producer and teacher of “The Engagement Project;” and the producer of the movie “Is Genesis History?” The conference will be held on Saturday, April 11, at Reich’s E.C. Church, 338 Stackstown Road, Marietta. It will run from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“We all know that our culture ... needs Jesus,” Blank shared. “How do we as Christians engage our culture today, that embraces and advances a worldview that is so much against what we believe? That is what Dr. Tackett is going to be addressing.”

For the first two sessions of the program, Tackett will explain, from a biblical worldview standpoint, reasons for the changes in our culture. The third session will draw from “The Engagement

Project,” explaining what God is calling us to do as we answer the challenges society is facing.

The idea for the conference came about as members of Reich’s E.C. Church were exploring Tackett’s Truth Project and Engagement Project studies and found they were encouraged and inspired by what they learned.

When Blank discovered that Tackett’s ministry sought churches willing to host a live conference, especially in locations it had not been before, he saw an opportunity to bring Tackett to Pennsylvania.

“We want to have an event like this so that we as believers can be equipped to and challenged to engage our world for Christ and so that we can learn how to defend and stand firm on the truth of God’s Word in our world today,” Blank explained. “We wanted to make this available to believers and churches in our area so that we all can learn how to better engage our culture and community for Christ.”

He said the timing of the program is especially relevant.

“On this our country’s 250th year, we want to rediscover our heritage and the foundation on which we were built,” he remarked. “This conference will aid in that endeavor.”

People who attend the conference can expect to receive engaging teaching from Tackett, Blank said.

“Dr. Tackett will show us from the Scripture what we are seeing play out in our

culture today,” he shared. “You will gain a deeper understanding of the primary battlegrounds in our culture from the family, to the church, work and government. Dr. Tackett will then lead us to gaze on upon the crown jewel of the nature of God, and we will be challenged to fulfill His real vision for His Church.”

He noted that Tackett is renowned for explaining biblical and historical truth in a dynamic and impactful manner, but in a way that everyone can understand.

“I would encourage you to attend because you will learn a lot and be challenged and encouraged in your faith,” he said, adding that Tackett uses stateof-the-art technology to engage audiences. “You will leave being challenged, refreshed, equipped and encouraged to share your faith with others more effectively and naturally.”

Blank emphasized that early registration for the conference is encouraged, because registration is limited to the first 125 couples or individuals who register. Day-of registration will be available as space allows.

Girls on the Run Accepting Registrations

Registration is underway for the spring season of the Girls on the Run Lancaster-Lebanon.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an organization for girls in third through eighth grades. “We have our Girls on the Run curriculum, which is third through fifth grades, and we have our Heart and Sole curriculum, which is for girls in sixth through eighth grades,” said program director Kylie Homan. “Girls should register because we are a program that utilizes a researchbased curriculum to support girls in understanding their emotions, fostering friendships, and expressing empathy.”

Homan prefers that girls register by the start of the season on Monday, March 9. Sign-ups will close on Saturday, March 14. Go to www.gotr lancasterlebanon.org to sign up or for additional information.

There is a standard fee to participate in GOTR, but there is some flexibility. “We emphasize families pay what they can given their current circumstances,” said Homan. “We want to make sure that our program is accessible to girls and that there’s no barriers for anybody to participate. There are no forms, no applications to fill out. Their selection of financial assistance is just part of the registration process, and they have the opportunity to select their payment amount.”

The fee includes the

cost of training coaches, the curriculum for Girls on the Run International, and all of the lesson materials that are provided to the coaches. Girls receive a take-home journal with activities to do and also get an official GOTR T-shirt and a season gift. The 5K registration and the medal they receive at the 5K are also included in the price.

“The name is Girls on the Run, but it’s about so much more,” said Jessica Wilson, who is the program and 5K manager. “It’s really about encouraging girls to move forward at whatever their pace may be. We have girls that run. We have girls that walk. We have girls that

Susquehanna River, and while she was reviewing the collection both on display and in storage, she discovered a unique painting. It featured an unfamiliar riverboat, The Mary.

There was no additional information with the painting, but Freeman was intrigued and inspired to learn more. She began a deep dive into the history of the ferry that once crossed the Susquehanna River.

Before bridges spanned the river, ferries transported people from shore to shore for more than a century. In her talk, Freeman will share her research journey from the painting’s discovery to uncovering the story of The Mary, the people who used it and the river that inspired it all.

“Our lectures cover a wide variety of topics and include speakers from local universities and historic societies,” she commented. “Our lecture series brings history to life, showing how the past continues to shape our towns, culture and landscape. By discovering their place in these stories, people are inspired to care for and protect the heritage that surrounds them today.”

The lecture on The Mary will wrap up the winter series, but it’s not the end of opportunities for discovery with SNHA, Byers said.

“It’s a real-life historical detective story,” said Hope Byers, vice president of visitor engagement for SNHA. “History sometimes gets a reputation for having the ‘truth.’ In reality, the work of doing history is about following clues, finding contradictions and collecting evidence. As the quest goes on, a deeper story is unlocked.”

Byers noted that The Mary operated from the 1890s until the 1920s.

“The painting is only the beginning of a journey into learning about life in the 1920s and our local river culture,” she said. “For some, this lecture may be inspiration to start your own historical detective journey into a family heirloom or antique.”

Embroiderers Guild to Meet

The Thimble and Thread Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. at Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Ave., York. The group’s next meeting will be held on March 3.

The group is for individuals who enjoy needlework, including embroidery, crossstitch, needlepoint, crochet, and knitting. Stitchers of any skill level are welcome.

“If people are interested in river history and yearning to get on the water, SNHA will begin River Discover Boat Tours in June when visitors can get aboard our 1912 wooden, all-electric boat for a cruise,” she said. “We can’t ferry you across, but we’ll be delighted to give you a tour!”

Advance purchase of tickets for Freeman’s lecture is recommended as the Zimmerman Center has limited seating capacity.

“This unique lecture cannot have a virtual option as you need to see and discover The Mary in person,” Byers said.

The lecture will last about an hour, including time for a question-and-answer session. To learn more or to register, visit https:// susqnha.org/events or call the Zimmerman Center at 717-252-0229, ext. 101, or Columbia Crossing River Trails Center at 717-4495607. The in-person trainings will teach participants how to prevent contamination by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving food and by sanitizing food service facilities. The course will be led by certified ServSafe instructors.

The course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the ServSafe Manager book, learning materials, and exam. The deadline to register for the course and exam is Tuesday, March 3.

skip. We have girls that roll in their wheelchairs at practices. We just encourage all of those movements and just encourage them to keep moving forward.”

Previous participants might notice a slight change in the program. “We are super excited this spring will be the first season in which we’re starting the use of a new curriculum, which has been rolled out from Girls on the Run International, and it is called Hello Bold Heart,” said Homan. “It is all about giving girls the opportunity to discover their heart power and developing the confidence to boldly share what is in their heart and help others use their voice too.”

Homan added, “The curriculum does a really great job of integrating the physical movement with the learning components. It’s a lot of tandem learning when it comes to the physical activity. The girls don’t always realize that they’re running and they’re doing the physical activity because they’re doing so much learning along with it.”

GOTR is seeking coaches who will operate chapters out of schools. “For the

spring season, we will need approximately 300 to 350 volunteer coaches to support the teams across Lancaster and Lebanon (counties),” said Homan, adding that there are coaching opportunities for males, females, and high school-age girls.

“We encourage anybody to come out to be a coach,” Homan said. “We have coaches in their 70s, and you don’t need to be a runner. You don’t need to have coaching experience. We have a lot of coaches that come in who are teachers, but we have coaches that are just community members looking for a place to give back and to support the community in this way.”

GOTR prepares the coaches. “All of our coaches receive a very structured coach training experience that gives them the foundation and the resources to be able to coach successfully for throughout the season,” said Homan. “And then coaches are always given support throughout the season from our council.”

The goal is to have a GOTR program in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. “We’re working towards that,” said Homan. The spring season will conclude with a 5K that will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 16. It will be held at for the first time at Greenfield, 1581 William Penn Way, Lancaster. The event is open to the public. It is designed as a fun run and is not chip-timed. “We need hundreds of volunteers in order for the 5K to be a safe and successful day,” said Homan. At the end of the season, the girls engage in a community impact project, which is their opportunity to give back to the community that is important to them.

“The new curriculums that we’ve been using are really emphasizing that a small act can make a big impact,” said Homan. “It gets the girls to think on a smaller scale about how they can really do something that’s important, but it doesn’t have to be grandiose.”

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, invites those who wish to learn and speak Pennsylvania Dutch, also known as Pennsylvania German, to a six-session series studying and practicing the language. The series will take place on Tuesdays, March 3 and 17, April 7 and 21, and May 5 and 19. Classes will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Mennonite Life Community Room.

Class instructors will lead informal lessons based on the book “Speaking Amish: A Beginner’s Introduction to Pennsylvania German” by Lillian Stoltzfus. The book is available in the Mennonite Life store and at

www.mennonitelife.org/ shop. Lessons will focus on casual conversation, with plenty of time for practice.

People with all levels of experience are welcome, from beginners to fluent speakers.

There is a suggested donation per session. Participants should plan to attend all six sessions and may register for the series by calling 717-3939745 or emailing Ruth Martin at customercare@ mennonitelife.org.

Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.

First Capital Federal Credit Union staff members and representatives of the United Way of York County took part in the check presentation.
