SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Peter Fenton shares CV-nurtured talents with the world BY JEFF FALK

Fall Festival is township’s next coming attraction BY JEFF FALK

Almost every new beginning is accompanied by a certain amount of momentum. At this point of its evolution, the East Lampeter Township recreation department is trying to keep that initial flow going. The recreation department’s upcoming fall festival is a great way to build on that momentum. “I feel like with anything new you need a year to develop and

grow,” said Lisa Cleveland, who’s four months into her term as the first recreation director in East Lampeter Township. “We’re still just starting out. We want to get through each season of the year and then continue to grow. My primary focus is to program for the community. There’s a lot to do on the back side of these events. At the beginning, it’s about setting the groundwork and finding people in the community who want to help.” See Fall Festival pg 4

In war on human trafficking, Freedom Walk is step in right direction BY JEFF FALK

Peter Fenton instructs actors and directors on the finer points of one of his stage scripts.

A production of Fenton’s dark comedy and drama “Abandon All Hope” made its off-Broadway debut in New York City in June. He has also gained acclaim for his psychological thriller “Night Voices” and his family drama “Inherently Special.” “I bounce around with a lot of different genres,” said Fenton.

“I write to make people laugh and think. When you can make people laugh, you can make them think. I like to write things I would enjoy watching. I want to leave the world a little better than I found it.” Fenton noted that there are differences between stagewriting and screenwriting. “The most

walk with us as well,” said Amy Thurston, Hope Inspire Love’s co-founder, president and chief executive officer (CEO) for the last seven years. “ When we walk, we’ve seen people cry. It might be walking for someone who can’t walk. When you walk, it brings hope to you and your community.” Hope Inspire Love’s fifth annual Freedom Walk will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Musser Park, See Freedom Walk pg 3

hen he was a student at Conestoga Valley Middle School (CVMS), Peter Fenton played a prominent role in a school play. Fenton thought he could write a better script than the one being used for the play, so he wrote the comedy adventure “Good Knight and Goodbye.” A number of years later, while attending W heaton College, Fenton was contacted by his former CVMS English teacher and play director Sue Fisher, asking him to write a play script commemorating her upcoming retirement. In response, Fenton wrote the comedy adventure “The Thousand Year Rose.” It was a series of events that continues to shape Fenton’s life as a playwright, a screenwriter, a producer and a director. Now 29 and living in New Hope, Fenton is trying to “make it” - whatever that looks like - in a demanding industry. “I’ve been going into the professional (scriptwriting ) world,” said Fenton. “Over the last eight years, it feels like the Earth has shaken, but in small, incremental steps. I’m following the momentum and trying to figure out what’s next. But I know there’s nothing else I’d want to do with my life.” To this point of his career, Fenton has penned six stage plays and three movie scripts. The 2013 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School is currently working on his seventh stage script and his fourth film.
