eola United Methodist Church (UMC) has a long rich tradition of altruism and community activity. It’s a budding legacy that is manifested in and proliferated by the upcoming Kensill Fund for Hope event. “We would love for members of the community to attend,” said Adrienne Gorman, who’s been the Kensill Fund for Hope’s event chair for four years. “It would even be a great event for people who want to meet local people and become part of the community. It’s also an opportunity to donate to a great cause.” This fall’s edition of the annual Kensill Fund for Hope event will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Leola UMC, 7 W. Main St., Leola. The fundraising event will feature a silent auction and luncheon from 1 to 4 p.m. inside the church’s fellowship hall. Lancaster has its own unique history, style, heritage and traditions. Lancaster also has its own distinct vibe and atmosphere. Lancaster Capital Day’s goal is to highlight and nurture that culture-infused ambiance. “It’s a grassroots, communityled initiative,” said Tim Austin, one of the organizers of Lancaster Capital Day. “It’s a celebration of Lancaster. By investing in Lancaster culture, we have a chance to look at ourselves and celebrate what we love about the community. It’s a cultural festival, but the culture is ours. It’s an opportunity for the city to put on a show. The initial response has been really positive.” The inaugural Lancaster Capital Day will be staged from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, a date that is historically close to Sept. 27, 1777, when Lancaster famously served as the United States’ capital for a single day. Lancaster Capital Day will be conducted in the closed streets and surrounding blocks of 1 Penn Square in the city, at the precise location where the Continental Congress convened an official session inside the Lancaster County Courthouse. Lancaster Capital Day is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. can do to keep the brain active is a really important part of aging well. There’s also a business of meeting up with people, and their concern for each other. There’s a whole gamut of socializing that goes on.” Quest for Learning Lancaster is all about education and fellowship. Designed for but not limited to older adults, Quest for Learning Lancaster is gearing up for another series of informative classes at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster. The courses will offer four 50-minute classes - with time for questions and discussion at the end - on a variety of different topics at both 9:40 and 11 a.m. on six consecutive Thursdays, beginning Sept. 24. There are modest costs associated with registering for the Quest for Learning Lancaster classes. Overseen by a board of directors, Quest for Learning Lancaster, which also offers a similar curriculum in the spring, is celebrating 50 years of serving the county. Quest for Learnng is a secular, nonprofit organization. “The lectures are amazing, and we get amazing lecturers,” said Carroll. “These are presenters who everybody loves to hear. Sometimes our professors and presenters tell us they are ecstatic to be doing this for Quest because no one is texting, no one is falling asleep and the people are so attentive. They’re listening, and, I hope, learning.” Quest for Learning Lancaster classes employ spoken lectures, some reading and visual aids to present the subject materials. There are no grades, tests or homework. Among the most popular of the rotating topics are music, history, film and baseball, but there are also

classes focusing on coffee, trees, writing, science and worldviews. “No matter what it is that you’re looking for, whether it’s challenging topics or knowledge, you can find it at Quest,” said Carroll, a resident of southern Lancaster County. “People just love the camaraderie and the education. These people really want to learn.” Currently, there are more than 300 individuals registered for Quest for Learning Lancaster courses, mostly senior citizens and mainly people from Lancaster County. On any given Thursday morning, more than 200 of those registrants will be in attendance. The classes are led and taught by 30 volunteer instructors, including former and current professors, lawyers, industry experts and community leaders. “I’m always a little disappointed when I ask people if they have ever heard of Quest and they haven’t,” said Carroll. “We have really tried to work hard on getting the word out. I think everybody deserves to know about it. It’s a great opportunity.” Quest for Learning Lancaster was established in 1976 and has spent the last 49 years of its existence at the accommodating Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. “When it was first started, local ministers became interested in this format,” said Carroll. “They were impressed by the number of people who attended. It was initially held at First Presbyterian Church, but it was so small of a venue that it had to be moved to Trinity Lutheran Church, and it’s been there ever since. To Know Stan Deen Was to Be Inspired by Him BY JEFF FALK

You know you’ve led a great life when they name a foundation after you. But this story is as much about the people he influenced as it is about the Stan Deen Foundation or the man himself. “We just carry on his work,” said Nate Deen, the founder and executive director of the Stan Deen Foundation. “That’s the greatest way we can honor him. Stan was more than a teacher. He did so many productions, but I think his greatest production was the people. His legacy will live on every time a young person does something positive. “When I first met Stan, I was living in my car while still going to school, and I hadn’t eaten in three days,” continued Nate. “He offered me something to eat, and it changed my life. He literally became my father figure. In 2018, my wife and I changed our names to Deen. He was the last Deen in his lineage. I was the son he never had, and he was the father I always needed.” In the world of local nonprofits, the Stan Deen Foundation is a relatively recent initiative, yet one that is picking up steam. Using the performing arts and various aspects of media as vehicles, the Stan Deen Foundation seeks to positively affect the lives of students and teenagers, not unlike the impact Stan had on Nate and thousands of other New Holland-area youths. Overseen by a board of directors, the Stan Deen Foundation sponsors a pair of Garden Spot High School scholarships, one designed to assist a student who excels in the classroom and the theater and another that seeks to further the fortunes of an underdog student. The Stan Deen Foundation is funded through private donations, and it recently received $8,500 in funds from the organizers of the New Holland Classic Car Show. But the foundation’s biggest

strength, at least at this point of its development, might be its ability to cooperate and collaborate with similar, like-minded nonprofits. “The mission is to support underserved children in New Holland, Lancaster County and across the country,” said Nate. “We want to inspire hope in their lives. We believe one caring adult can change the lives of kids. We really try to find unique opportunities. We don’t try to reinvent what other great nonprofits are doing. We’ll partner with them.” Stan taught English at Garden Spot High School for 30 years and directed hundreds of theatrical productions, both within the school district and throughout the community. After experiencing a stroke two years earlier, Stan passed in his sleep on July 22, 2016. His impact on the area cannot be overstated. “We want to infuse art into young people’s lives,” said Nate. “That’s what happened to me. I was living in my car, and he got me involved in the arts at Garden Spot. We never turn down an opportunity. We can refer them to someone else. We want to help that underdog, even though we may not know their stories. Stan loved the underdog, and I was the underdog. He did it through small moments of hope.” Nate wrote a movie, “Brave the Dark,” which was based on Stan Deen’s life. He also regularly speaks publicly about the influence Stan had on him. “In New Holland, a lot of people knew him,” said Nate. “What I love about his story is that when people hear what he did for me, they say, ‘I wish I would’ve had a Stan Deen in my life.’ What he did for me really drives the foundation. Young people today need to be seen, need to be heard. It’s my passion too. Stan passed that on to me.” For additional information, go to https://standeenfoundation.org.

A vast majority of the available books have been donated to Friendship Church by members of local communities. The church is always looking for donated books for upcoming sales. “If you have a donation, you may put them on the porch by the double glass doors,” said Trostle. Friendship Church is seeking to raise more than $1,200 from its fall book sale. The proceeds will be donated to Red Bird Mission in Kentucky, a United Methodist mission dedicated to constructing healthy, sustainable communities in the southeastern portion of the state. “That’s a lot of books for the low prices,” said Trostle. Friendship Church has been

conducting its community book sales for more than 15 years. The church also sponsors a similar book sale during Mother’s Day weekend, and its book room is open to the public during the church’s annual Christmas bazaar, which this year will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28. “We are ver y community oriented,” said Trostle. “We collect donations for CrossNet (Ministries), and we also participate in National Night Out.” Friendship Church, a United Methodist Congregation is supported by more than 80 members. The church also conducts activities for seniors and hosts craft groups, vacation Bible school, church bell and choir programs, community meals, Scouting America troops and Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon meetings. Fundraising Banquet to Benefit Seminary The Lancaster Friends of Meserete Kristos Seminary (Ethiopia) will hold its annual fundraising banquet on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-inHand. The banquet will include the option of authentic Ethiopian food - injera and wat - or American fare. The featured speaker will be principal Gishu Jebecha, head of Meserete Kristos Seminary (MKSeminary). His topic will be “The Unique Contribution MKSeminary Makes Within Ethiopia.” Jebecha began teaching at the seminary in 2012 and became the institution’s head in 2019. In recent years, he has led the school in forging a five-year strategic plan, creating new academic programs, achieving full accreditation,

strengthening student enrollment and faculty, and constructing new facilities. MKSeminary is owned by the Meserete Kristos (Founded on Christ) Church, an Anabaptist-related church that is estimated to have more than a million members. Due to rapid growth in recent decades, the church has a great need for additional leaders, pastors, counselors, peacemakers, and evangelists. Meeting this need is the work of the seminary, whose mission is “to equip men and women for the holistic transformation of the church and society.” The seminary trains church leaders from throughout Ethiopia and neighboring countries. Like nothing else, books provide glimpses into the minds of creative human beings. That alone makes them priceless. But Friendship Church, a United Methodist Congregation is selling books cheap. “Reading is important for your whole life,” said Kay Trostle, who, along with Heather Bressi, has been the co-chair of Friendship Church’s book sale for three years. “It’s a chance to relax. Depending on the book, you may laugh or cry.” Another one of Friendship Church’s incredible book sales is just around the corner. The fall edition of the popular community event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both Friday, Oct. 9, and Saturday, Oct. 10, inside the church’s designated book room and in an overflow room at 120 W. Main St., New Holland. A bake sale will be held at the church’s entrance in conjunction with the book sale. Day are expecting as many as 20,000 visitors to attend. “It’s a really great time of the year to do festivals,” said Austin. “It’s a Saturday in September, and it’s a market day. There are going to be a lot of reasons to come downtown. I think we’ll be attracting a lot of the county crowd, and we’re ready for it. The stage is set for a big event.” Much of Lancaster Capital Day’s future will be determined by how the inaugural event comes off and ultimately how it is received by the community.

“I certainly hope it becomes an annual event. There’s a lot of energy behind that idea,” said Austin. “We really want to see it happen again. This is the year to start it, and year one is the year you set the tone. By year three, it’s a tradition. Big Hug will hold its second annual FUNdraising dinner on Saturday, Sept. 26, in the cafeteria at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 501 Orange St., Lancaster. Church Sets Polka Mass Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2 W. Strawberry St., Lancaster, will hold its annual Polka Mass on Sunday, Sept. 27. The event will begin at 9 a.m. in the sanctuary. The church celebrates its anniversary yearly with a Polka Mass led by the Rev. Glenn Beard. The event seeks to combine

the Lutheran liturgical worship service in a respectful way with popular waltz and polka tunes. The service will be followed by a fellowship time in the adjacent church parlor. Parking is available in the lot behind the church on Lafayette Street.

For example, there will be tickets to Magic & Wonder Dinner Theater in Paradise, tickets to Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, a gift box and tickets from the Lancaster Barnstormers, passes to Go ’N Bananas in Lancaster, a gift certificate for Texas Roadhouse in Ephrata, themed baskets, gift cards, memberships, play passes and scrumptious baked goods. All proceeds from the event - as much as $7,000 - will go directly to the Reverend Frank Kensill Fund, which monetarily supports higher education and after-school programs at Leola UMC’s sister church, Mid-Town Parish in north Philadelphia. “It’s a very small community there in north Philadelphia,” said Gorman, a resident of Leola, “and the students need it. They need the help.” The Kensill Fund was established in 1995 to honor the former pastor and further the missions he held dear. Each year, more than $6,000 in scholarship monies are awarded to students associated with MidTown Parish. “(The fundraiser is) run correctly, and it’s gotten to the point where it’s going to run for years and years,” said Gorman. “We’re dispersing thousands of dollars two times a year, and a lot of it is interest. But if you don’t continue to fundraise, it doesn’t continue to do that.” A church with more than 100 active members, Leola UMC also sponsors and conducts community movie nights, a vacation Bible school and a fall fest, as well as community music nights in Leola. TechLink to Create Fiber Optic Training Labs for the project was part of PDE’s latest round of grant distributions, announced on Aug. 21. The awarded funds were received by 17 organizations and totaled $3.5 million. Initiatives stemming from these funds will expand access to career pathways in multiple industries. The nine partner schools will implement three shared-equipment instructional labs, which will prepare secondary students and adult learners for fiber optic-related jobs. Students using the instructional labs will complete 40 hours of instruction and earn the CFOT Level 1 Certification, a credential valued by telecommuni-

cations, broadband, and electrical companies. Select information technology teachers from each school will be trained to deliver the curriculum, teach the hands-on skills necessary to be a certified fiber optic technician, and administer the CFOT Level 1 Certification exam. The labs’ fiber optic training equipment will rotate among the TechLink schools to maximize its use and the number of students who can benefit from it. As the lead grant applicant and fiscal agent, the York County School of Technology will manage the funds, procurement, equipment acquisition, and required state reporting.

Lecture, Apple Dumpling Sale Posted Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host a lecture about the Ephrata Cloister Military Hospital on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Visitor Center auditorium. Site administrator Bradley Smith will be the presenter. In 1732, German pietists established a semimonastic, pacifist community that is known today as the Ephrata Cloister. In 1777, this quiet community was forever changed when the Continental Army established a hospital on the Cloister grounds. Smith will share never-before-told stories of the hospital and discuss the people it served or treated. The lecture will last approximately 60 minutes. A recording of the session will be made and sent out as a link to participants. There is an admission fee, which will be waived for members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates. More than 100 items have been purchased since the creation of the fund more than 40 years ago. Last year, the Back to the Cloister Fund purchased a Jacob Gorgas tall case clock that was made around the 1790s in the Gorgas shop in Ephrata. The clock is displayed in the Visitor Center at the Cloister. The apple dumplings, made by Achenbach’s in Leola, will be available for a fee per dumpling at the drive-through tent beside the museum store at the Historic Ephrata Cloister. The sale will take place rain or shine. Interested individuals are encouraged to make their purchases early. No online sales are available. Help the Fight Plans Fundraiser Help the Fight will host its 17th annual Main Event Benefit and Auction on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event will take place at Spooky Nook Meetings & Events, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. The organization’s signature fundraising event brings together local businesses, community members, breast cancer survivors, patients, families, and supporters for an event dedicated to making a difference in the lives of local individuals facing breast cancer, along with their families. Held at the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Main Event serves as Help the Fight’s largest annual fundraiser and plays an important role in sustaining the organization’s mission of ensuring that no one in the community faces breast cancer alone. The Main Event will also include stories of hope and resilience, a live auction, an online silent auction, giveaway drawings, and other opportunities to support Help the Fight’s mission. Every dollar raised stays within

Lancaster County and surrounding communities, helping patients with expenses such as mortgage or rent payments, utilities, groceries, transportation, insurance premiums, child care, medical costs, and other essential needs during treatment. In addition to direct financial assistance, Help the Fight supports early detection through mammograms, genetic testing, and other screenings while also funding patient support programs throughout the region.
