If you’re trying to influence others, meet different people and forge new relationships, music is a pretty good way to go about it. The Rizzetta’s Tones’ music is downright neighborly. “I think (Good Shepherd’s fine arts series is) for the community,” said Doug Albert, who’s been the chair of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd’s fine arts committee for three years. “Greenfield is like becoming our neighborhood. Cylo is a character, with character. “Cylo’s role as the mascot is to bring the energy to each game day and create excitement about our team in the community,” said Madeline Davis, who is the Lancaster Stormers’ community and fan engagement coordinator, as well as one of Cylo’s handlers. “Typically, professional sports teams do have a mascot. Cylo is a very important staple to our organization and is well recognized in the community.” Cylo is the official mascot of the Lancaster Stormers professional baseball club, which plays its home games at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The friendly Cylo plays a huge role in the Stormers’ overall fan experience, as important off the field as the team and its players are on the field. “This season, we play 63 home games at Penn Medicine Park, and Cylo comes to all of them,” said Davis. “He is our biggest fan. He is a great entrance greeter, loves to give high fives and arm wrestle, and will sit with fans to watch the game.” A minor league franchise, the Lancaster Stormers compete in the Atlantic League, a circuit whose season runs from late April to early September. As for Cylo, he is in a league of his own. With his help, the Stormers have one of the most loyal fanbases in the Atlantic League, drawing an average of more than 4,000 spectators at each home contest.

A wealth of history can be found in Marietta, but much of it has been buried, forgotten or overlooked. Now a group of volunteers is working to bring that heritage into the spotlight. The Marietta African American Legacy Initiative (MAALI) Team invites the public to a dedication and commemoration ceremony to honor the heritage of Bethel AME Church and Wesley AME Zion Cemetery and the people who worshipped and are buried there. The ceremony will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. “We are going to be focusing on four themes,” said Michael Sweeney, who gathered the people who comprise the MAALI Team. “The program will cover the church burnings, the veterans who are buried in the cemeteries, the Colored School and the Colored Camp Meetings.” As Sweeney explained, on April 19, 1861, both of the African American churches in Marietta were set on fire. Bethel AME burned completely to the ground, while Wesley AME Zion was damaged but later repaired. Just over a year later, Wesley AME Zion and the Colored School (also known as the African School) as well as a home on the property were destroyed by fire. He noted that about 35 Civil War, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans are buried in the cemeteries, including his father, but their history has been hidden. For years, the property containing the Wesley AME Zion

cemetery was abandoned, falling into disrepair. In the early 1990s, two local women, Catherine Tucker and Thelma Mae Waters, received a grant to restore the space but couldn’t prove the property was officially abandoned. Not content to let this history disappear, Tina Charles worked diligently to find the proof, and she succeeded. Now Sweeney and the other members of the MAALI Team are eager to finish what Tucker and Waters started. “What that generation was unable to do, we’re making progress to fulfill their vision,” Sweeney said. “Our goal is not only to preserve and honor the history of these churches, cemeteries and communities, but also to make that history accessible to future generations.” The MAALI Team has installed four commemorative markers, two at Bethel AME Church and its cemetery and two at Wesley AME Zion Cemetery. Each marker includes information and a QR code linking to a website where visitors can learn more about the history and significance of the sites. At the dedication ceremony, the program will touch on the Colored School, a painful reminder of racial segregation in the region, as well as Colored Camp Meetings, where upward of 5,000 people gathered just outside of Marietta between 1908 and 1913. Sweeney also wants to highlight women in ministry, including Rev. Charley Thomas, the current pastor at Wesley AME. That church has its own rich history. Jarena Lee, the first woman preacher in the

Work is still ongoing, and the team noted that many local individuals and businesses have contributed to the project, including Jones Landscaping, Shull’s Tree Service and the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania. Columbia Water Co. donated its services to the project as well. Jeff Hudson, a retired history teacher and former vice president of Marietta Borough Council, has been instrumental in helping, as has Andre Dominguez, a retired mechanical engineer who helped with cemetery conservation, among other contributions, and Rick Evans, who has also helped with the project. “We want to thank the entire community for their help with this,” Sweeney said, noting that the project is under its $23,750 budget thanks to donations of time and funds. “Even when we’re out there working, people will blow their horns in support, and we appreciate that. We want our history to stand with the rest of the local history, not above and not below, but with it.” Light refreshments will be served at the commemoration ceremony, and the building is handicapped-accessible. To build his MAALI Team, Sweeney recruited volunteers w ho c a re a s d eep l y a b o ut Marietta’s past as he does. The members said the project has opened their eyes to a history they didn’t know. John Jenkins worked for years at what is now GSK in Marietta. “I would walk to work, never realizing that part of the lot I walked by was the Black cemetery in disrepair,” he said. Lynn Jenkins said learning about the site was emotional. “There are human remains there that should be respected,” she said. “That was a big draw for me in helping with this project. When you pass that corner, there are Black people buried there, and everyone should know that.” The MAALI Team has spent countless hours repairing the Wesley AME Cemetery. “When we first got there, the area was in really bad shape,” said Charles Dorm. “There was junk everywhere. We assessed it and started manually cleaning it out.” The group cut down trees, planted grass, straightened tombstones, excavated and even used ground-penetrating radar to locate unmarked graves.

It’s blossomed through the commitments of its organizers. “There was a small group of Italians in Lititz; they met around these dinner gatherings and a desire to speak and promote the Italian language,” said Latura. “We have a large group of Italians who have immigrated to the Lititz and Lancaster area. It was like, ‘Hey, why don’t we have this picnic in the summer?’ And 3,000 people showed up. “The next year, we realized we had a festival on our hands,” concluded Latura. “We turned a picnic into this great festival in five years. In connection with Hunger Action Month, September, the Giant Company - known locally as Giant and Martin’s - will undertake several donation, volunteer, and awareness activities throughout the month to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Established by the Feeding America network of food banks in 2007, Hunger Action Month is a national campaign held every September to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger in America. The festival is a celebration of Italian culture. It is created for and supported by Italian Americans and people who aren’t Italian at all. We really try to highlight culture, food, music and dance.” Last year’s L’Italia Festival, which was conducted in Lititz Springs Park, drew nearly 20,000 visitors from all over Lancaster County, surrounding communities and neighboring states. “L’Italia Festival seems to be a great partnership with the rest of the community,” said Latura. “It’s really supposed to be a collaborative event. We want it to be a good event for the brick-and-mortars (downtown). I want people to feel welcome and

For one day in the middle of September, everyone in Lititz is Italian. “For me, (Italian culture is) special because so much of what I experience is this love of family, community, being joyful together, and it’s usually around food,” said Justina Latura, one of the organizers of L’Italia Festival. “There’s always food. There’s so much food, and pride and love in the food. The culture is tied to eating, and all the food is made with love. “It’s very similar to the food culture we’re so proud of in Lancaster,” continued Latura. “I feel like it’s an easy comparison. Tradition is so important in Italian culture, and it’s important in Lancaster as well.” In a very short time, L’Italia Festival has taken its place alongside all of the great events that Lititz hosts. This year’s edition of the annual celebration of what it means to be Italian will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, downtown on East Main Street, between Cedar Street and Cherry Lane. The street festival is free to attend, and everyone is welcome. “It’s vibrant, it’s festive, it’s fun,” said Latura. “Italian culture is bubbly, gregarious, and you want to be a part of it. It’s high energy. It’s friends, it’s family. It’s just for the community, to support the Italian community.” There will be a lot going on that day. The sixth annual Hudson’s Toy Sale will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon at Victory Church’s Conestoga Valley location, 1827 Freedom Road, Suite 103, Lancaster. This year’s event is presented by Bank of Bird-in-Hand. The event began after 6-yearold Hudson Rice saw people experiencing homelessness during a family trip to Chicago. He came home wanting to help and started by selling his own toys. Today, that simple act of kindness continues to bring families, businesses, and volunteers together to support local children and families struggling with homelessness or the threat of homelessness. Last year, Hudson’s Toy Sale donated $40,700 to Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, SEEDS and The Factory Ministries. This year, Hudson hopes to raise $50,000. At the heart of the event is a huge toy sale filled with brand-new toys and gently used items. Every toy purchased, auction bid placed, and giveaway drawing ticket sold will go toward helping local families. The event will also feature a large silent auction, with items including getaways to Eagle Rock Resort, Lancaster Arts Hotel, and the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square; spa days; a private turkey hunting weekend donated by Nate’s Automotive; unique handcrafted items; and children’s birthday party packages from NeverStopMoving365 and Fusion Gymnastics Center. They’re accomplished and experienced musicians who can all sing and play multiple instruments. “They’re five people who have been playing together for a long time,” said Albert. “They’re very comfortable with each other. They are storytellers, and they’re putting it to music. “You’re not going to find Celtic music at every concert you go to,” continued Albert. “This is a uniqueness we want to bring to the community. We want to provide art opportunities. We’re trying to be an extension of the neighborhood.” The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, which is supported by more than 100 active members, has been serving the Conestoga Valley area through its fine arts series for more than 30 years. “Cylo is our biggest cheerleader and does a great job of pumping up the crowd,” said Davis. “My favorite thing about Cylo is how outgoing and funny he is. I grew up coming to Stormers games and have loved him since I was a kid. Something a lot of people don’t know about him is that he is actually a distant cousin of the Phillie Phanatic.” Cylo has been part of the Lancaster professional baseball franchise since the organization’s inception 21 seasons ago. While banners have been hung and players have come and gone, the sturdy Cylo has been one of the Stormers’ few constants. “Cylo is named after Cy Young,” said Davis. “His full name is Cyloicious L. Stormer and has been that since the Stormers first debuted in 2005. I hope everyone gets the chance to meet Cylo. You know where to find him.”

Outside of Penn Medicine Park, Cylo makes dozens of local appearances each year. He’s just as comfortable reading books to preschoolers as he is visiting residents of retirement communities. “I do schedule the appearances,” said Davis, a resident of the city. “It’s a lot of fun connecting with different people and organizations, and it’s always rewarding to see faces light up when he arrives. Cylo appeals to all ages, and Cylo loves everyone.” “Cylo is very easily recognized in the Lancaster area,” concluded Davis. “When traveling downtown, we often receive honks from passing cars and we are frequently stopped for pictures. Zeltenreich Uses ESL to Improve Neighbors’ Lives In order to reap the benefits of a competitive community like Lancaster, individuals must possess smarts and strong work ethics. One must be afforded opportunities. You also have to be able to communicate. You have to be able to speak and understand the mother language. Administrator Wilma Bender and instructor Pam Hasse are par t of Zeltenreich Church’s valuable program that teaches English as a second language. “The English language is a melting pot of languages, just like our country is a melting pot of cultures,” said Hasse. “The English language is very embracing of new vocabulary words from different cultures. You have all these rules, and you have vast exceptions to these rules. Speaking the English language requires changing the brain’s thinking.” “I go to local businesses to hand out flyers about the program,” said Bender. “Once, a person came up to me and said, ‘I’ll stop you right there. We will not hire anyone who can’t speak English.’ Some factories will hire without English, but the workers are stuck; they can’t advance. It’s super important for making a living.” Located at 752 Hollander Road, New Holland, Zeltenreich Reformed Church is offering free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes from 7 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. every Tuesday. The first night of the program is Sept. 15, which will serve as

a time for student registration, placement tests and introductions. The teaching and learning will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and will last through Tuesday, May 11, 2027. Students can join the classes at any point. There are no tests, graduations or certificates of completion, and homework is optional. During the time of ESL instruction, Zeltenreich also offers free Bible-themed child care. “The atmosphere in class is one of a comfortable, relaxed learning space,” said Hasse. “The students are already familiar with the English language. This is an environment to practice the English language. It’s meant to be enjoyable. It’s a tool and a service to help.” Based on the students’ familiarity with the language, Zeltenreich’s ESL classes offer introductor y instruction on sounds, letters and words to increasingly complex levels that cover communicating with others and discussing topics, ideas and opinions. The ESL classes employ the use of textbooks and visual aids, and an emphasis is placed on pronunciation and annunciation. “The purpose of the placement tests is to put the students in the appropriate levels,” said Hasse. “Then you build from there. We try to maintain a great deal of flexibility. We don’t know who’s going to show up and their English levels. We try to build the program with the capacity for going from intro to advanced. “The primar y focus is on speaking the language,” added

We want them to feel welcome, and the best way to do that is through the English language.
