evon Weaver didn’t graduate from her hometown high school in Lewistown. She never got her General Equivalency Diploma (GED) either. But Weaver did graduate from the Potter’s House of Ruth addiction recovery and discipleship center. For it was at the House of Ruth in Leola where she found her way. “At the House of Ruth, I learned I had a lot of anxieties,” said Weaver. “To be with the Lord every day is impor tant. It’s hard out there. You’ve got to show people the love of Christ, no matter what they’re doing, even your enemies. I learned

Reamstown Days celebrates what it means to be from Reamstown. “This is a family event,” said Carol Smith, coordinator of Reamstown Days. “Everything is reasonably priced, making it possible to enjoy free entertainment and great food. Reamstown is just a special town.” This year’s edition of Reamstown Days falls on Friday, Sept. 11, from 4 to 10 p.m., and on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The community event is being staged at the site of its beneficiary, Reamstown Memorial Park, 23 E. Church St. - a 13-acre community-owned park donated to local residents by a group of four local businessmen nearly 90 years ago. L a n c a s t e r C o u n t y ’s annual 9/11 Memor ial Stair Climb will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the stair climb at 9 a.m. T his year mark s the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the fall of the World Trade Center towers. Once the memorial service begins, participants will begin a procession up the steps of the ballpark. tion has closed, but participants can register on the morning of the event. Every year, many first responders travel to the ballpark to participate in the event, which had 335 climbers last year. Many firefighters elect to wear their full set of equipment for the climb to emulate the way their 343 fallen brothers did to rescue those trapped in the twin towers. “A lot of them do,” Yuill said. “Some of them don’t, but we also have EMS personnel and police that will climb, and we also have members of the public that will participate.” In the past, the event has drawn first responders from all over the county, as well as states like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland. Similar memorial events are held throughout the country, and Lancaster’s stair climb is one of the largest in the region. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. For those unable to attend the event , a donation link is listed on the aforementioned website. T h e Na t i o n a l Fa l l e n Firefighters Foundation distributes funds to the New York City Fire Department’s counseling services. Many survivors, victims’ families and those who assisted in the rescue efforts continue to receive counseling two and a half decades after the attacks. Yuill said that the event u s u a l l y ra i s e s a ro u n d $20,000. “ T hey always had a counseling services unit,

but with the impact that the World Trade towers had, there were so many people, so many families that needed help,” Yuill said. “It helps meet the needs that they have up in New York City.” Yuill helped establish Lancaster’s stair climb 16 years ago to honor fellow firefighter Ronald Bucca. Yuill met Bucca at a training program in New York before Bucca was killed by the collapse of the World Trade Center. “(Ronald) and his partner were driving out somewhere when they heard what was happening, and they responded to the World Trade towers,” Yuill said. “Him and his partner had just gotten a lady out of the towers when Ronnie

went back in (for) somebody else, and that’s when it collapsed.” Prior to the climb, all of the participants will sit on the field and watch the scoreboard for a “video roll call.” The roll call will call off the names of the p e o p l e t h at d i e d , a n d participants are asked to stand up when the person they are representing is called. Each participant in the climb will be wearing a badge honoring somebody who died on Sept. 11, 2001. “ Yo u t h i n k o f 3 4 3 people, when you start reading their names off, i t t a ke s ove r 2 0 m i n utes to do,” Yuill said. “ That’s when the enormity of the whole things hits you.”

At any one time, there are anywhere between 825 and 900 incarcerated individuals living at the Lancaster County Prison and another 20 to 30 incarcerated at the Youth Intervention Center. “Of the total population, about 10% will go to a church service,” said Burkholder. “But the chaplaincy is available for the entire population. We touch most of the population because our chaplains are accessible to the population.” “(The inmates) could be someone in your congregation, and it could be your neighbors,” added Burkholder. “It can be anybody. These are individuals who just get in trouble a lot. But we’ve seen success stories too. There are people who break the patterns.” SFPM was started in the 1980s and has been serving the Lancaster County Prison system since 1993. prison.” SFPM, which is staffed by a combination of 15 employees and badged volunteers, is more of a facilitating organization than a hands-on operation. All prisoner requests for clergy visits are handled by SFPM, and the organization provides educational training and programs and works with clergy, chaplains and religious representatives from across Lancaster County. SFPM arranges 1,600 clergy visits each year, and the chaplains and volunteers conduct one-on-one sessions, distribute Bibles and other reading materials, lead group religious services and Bible study groups and deliver hospital and death notices of loved ones. “In some ways, we’re more of a behind- thescenes ministr y,” said Burkholder, a resident of Brownstown. “We try to stay in the background. We are focused on our job. We are focused on that inmate in prison. We’re a factor. We are known in the prison community. We are actually working inside the prisons.”

You don’t look at what the person has done; you look at the person.” This Support for Prison Ministries (SFPM) that B u r k h o l d e r d i re c t s i s responsible for everything religious - as well as all religions - that occurs in the Lancaster County Prison system and the Youth Intervention Center, both of which are located in the city of Lancaster. SFPM, which operates offices in both facilities, is also unofficially in charge of prisoners’ spiritual health, mental well-being and emotional stability. “I’ve been around people who have been incarcerated since the 1970s,” said Burkholder. “One of the things you get used to in prison is procedure. Your life is kind of out of your control. Prison is what you make of it. Most people I’ve been around want to be out of prison, but there are some (who) would rather be in

Devon Weaver from pg 1 tragedy after another. She even spent some time in jail, but that’s where she heard about the House of Ruth and the transformative work that is performed there. She filled out an application, was interviewed and then was accepted into the House of Ruth’s program. “When I was in jail, my mom and oldest daughter moved away, and I didn’t know where they were. I couldn’t find them,” said Weaver. “The House of Ruth was very spiritual, very uplifting. We did praying, and there was healing. I was very, very traumatized because of everything I went through. It was a lot of work. You’ve got to have endurance. “I put Christ first because everything was taken from me,” she added. “I didn’t even pray when I (first) came in because I didn’t have a voice. But you keep going, and you can feel the happiness.” During her time at the House of Ruth, Weaver attended classes, studied the Bible, learned basic life skills and volunteered at local nonprofits. She laid a spiritual, emotional and mental foundation upon which a new life could be constructed. During her stay, the House of Ruth’s population f luctuated between two and seven female residents. Some stuck out the program;

others did not. “When you’re on drugs and then don’t have them, it’s warfare in your mind,” said Weaver, a 44-year-old resident of Leola. “ You always think drugs are going to fill the void, but it’s not worth it. We replace drugs with the Holy Spirit. I just feel blessed.” Now, Weaver holds down two jobs. In addition to her position as an assistant manager at Family Dollar in New Holland, she also works for The Potter ’s House. “I just would encourage people to find that fire and to keep fighting,” said Weaver. “I didn’t have that fire, but through Him I found it.” For additional information, go to www.thepotters houselancaster.org.

The Conestoga Valley Athletic Hall of Fame will induct three new members on Friday, Sept. 11. The honorees are Carol D. Hess, Connor Whitacre, and Ed Sieber. A reception will be held in the main lobby of Conestoga Valley High School (CV), located at 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, followed by the enshrinement ceremony held in the auditorium beginning at 5 p.m. The Class of 2026 will be introduced to the CV community during halftime of CV’s football game against Dallastown. Sieber was active from 1966 to 2024. Along with his duties as a seventh-grade English teacher, Sieber assisted the athletic department in many gameday roles. He began by

At the Lancaster-Lebanon County Track Meet, she received medals in the 440- yard rel ay, 80-yard hurdles, and 110yard hurdles. Following her high school career, Hess accepted a scholarship for g ymnastics to Ursinus College, where she competed in the Division III Championships. Whitacre, Class of 2016, earned four varsity letters in soccer and four in basketball. On the soccer field, he became a starter his freshman year and captained the team his junior and senior years. While Whitacre was at CV, his teams won the Lancaster-Lebanon Championship and the District 3 Soccer Championship, a n d h i s te a m w a s t h e PIAA runner-up in 2015. Whitacre was named to the L ancaster-Lebanon All-Star Team twice. In 2015, he was sele cte d as the Player of the Year in Section 1 and the LNP boys’ soccer Player of the Year, and he was named to the PIAA AllState 1st Team and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Region II All-American Team. As a basketball player, Whitacre was a three-year star ter and three- year captain. In 2015, his team won the section title and Whitacre was the recipient of the Buck Pride Award. To cap a successful senior year, he was named CV’s Male Athlete of the Year. He also received the Rill Medal of Honor Award and the A. Landis Brackbill Scholar-Athlete Award. After graduation, he took his athletic talents to Franklin & Marshall College (F&M), where he helped the Diplomats win their Conference Championship in 2017.
