Life Awakening’s Night of Blessing also has a spiritual component. “It’s community outreach and a fundraiser,” said Linda Ingham, who’s been Life Awakening’s executive director for more than 20 years. “There will be a feeling of joy, and there will be time for testimonies. We want to educate people about our (new) children’s ministry and raise funds for the expansion of it.” Life Awakening will conduct this year’s edition of its annual Night of Blessing from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at Ephrata Community Church, 70 Clay School Road. Interested individuals are encouraged to park near and use the north entrance of the building. Included in the evening’s festivities will be a celebration of Life Awakening’s 25th anniversary. It has taken some time, but Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ Suicide Prevention Conference has picked up steam. It’s making a difference. “The quality of the conference is improving,” said Kim McDevitt, who’s been MHA of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ executive director for nine years. “This conference is so packed with such great education. Folks are fully engaged and asking good questions. It gives me hope when I see our community coming together year after year. We all have a responsibility in this. To see people continuing to come tells me they really care about (preventing) suicide.” The organization’s seventh annual Suicide Prevention Conference will be con-

This year’s conference theme is “Hope in Action: A Community Approach to Suicide Prevention.” That Thursday’s agenda will feature four one-hour breakout sessions, during which 16 topics will be addressed, including finding stillness, how faith and journaling bring peace to an anxious mind, hope beyond the visible, maternal mortality related to mental health, when clinicians grieve, and the power of sounds and spoken word. Delivering the keynote address will be Dr. Jay Breneman, who’s the director of firearm suicide prevention for CeaseFire Pennsylvania. Interested individuals can register for the Suicide Prevention Conference at https://tinyurl .com/5n6hjpdy. “We want to bring everyone together and g ive them the tools to see what prevention looks like,” said McDevitt. “It’s a lot of community building too. It’s a very difficult subject matter, but people come together to talk about solutions. Like, ‘What could we be doing differently? What could we be doing better?’ No single organization can prevent suicide; it takes a community.” More than 270 individuals are expected to attend the conference, including health care and mental health care professionals, educators, company employees, faith leaders and community members. “It’s for everyone,” said McDevitt, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s a really neat event. It’s so heartfelt. You see people connecting and talking about a very difficult topic. I see people See MHA pg 4

Housing from pg 1 “The people who will directly benefit from this project are neighbors who are referred to Chestnut Housing by CV SEEDS or Bridge of Hope,” said Michelle Kime, the executive director of Conestoga Valley SEEDS. “They are individuals and families in need of the opportunity for more affordable housing and who are working with a social service organization on goals they have. Once they are living in these homes, they will stay connected to the social service organization working with them for at least a year. We would also sug gest that our entire community would benefit from this project, because when more of our neighbors have access to affordable housing and the stability that it brings and the space that it allows for them to thrive in new ways, we all benefit.” Par tners CV SEEDS, Chestnut Housing and Bridge of Hope are collaborating on the Bridgeport Housing Project (BHP), a new initiative that will construct 13 affordable apartments on Lincoln Highway. Currently in the land development phase, BHP, which to date has raised over 55% of its projected $3.2 million budget, hopes to begin construction on the apartments s ome t ime du r ing the second quarter of 2027. “When individuals are not able to afford housing in a community, it creates many challenges,” said Megan Shertzer, administrative assistant for CV SEEDS. “These individuals are often working multiple jobs to make ends meet, making child care a challenge. Many of these families live permanently in motels or hotels, which are not designed to support long-term living. Families living in motels and hotels encounter many barriers - no stoves or ovens to cook full meals, limited space to sleep, no space for children to go outside and enjoy playing, limited space for belongings and many other things. Many of these families are paying $400 to $600 per week to stay at these motels. Affordable housing brings dignity, stability and safety to families in our community.”

CV SEEDS, Chestnut Housing and Bridge of Hope will stage a fundraiser, The Bridgeport Housing Celebration: Creating Housing in Conestoga Valley, on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Inn At Leola Village, 38 Deborah Drive, Leola. The evening will include delicious dining, an update on the unfolding of BHP, an opportunity for direct giving and an important conversation titled “Neighbors Bridging Differences” led by pastors Jon Carlson and Joel Kime. Organizers of BHP are hoping the funds raised that evening will go a long way toward satisfying the remainder of the financial goal. The Conestoga Valley School District has identified 90 students whose families could be considered homeless. “CV SEEDS has three key focus areas - housing, education and health - and within our housing focus, this is incredibly important,” said Kime. “We have been walking alongside seven different families since January who have been able to move from motels to stable housing. Only one of those families has been able to stay within our CV community because the options for affordable housing weren’t able to be found in our community. While we are thrilled when our neighbors find stable housing anywhere, we would love to be able to have more housing options available that allow them to stay within our community. This project will help with that.” In addition, CV SEEDS will host its fourth annual com m u n i t y bre a k fa s t during the morning hours of Thursday, Oct. 8. Comedy Night Fundraiser Planned T h e Po t t e r ’s H o u s e will hold a comedy night fundraiser featuring Taylor Mason on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Funding an all-volunteer, community fire company is no small undertaking, no easy task. It requires creativity, planning, consistency and flexibility. “Garden Spot Fire Rescue is funded by donations from the community,” said Trevor Martin, a GSFR lieutenant for six years. “Contrary to what most people think, we do not receive money from taxes. Fundraisers like this are on a downward trend as volunteerism is also on a downward trend. All of our members have full-time jobs and families. GSFR hosts a handful of fundraisers each year, but we are also aware of the toll that the time commitment takes on our members and their families.”

show respect when walking around looking at the vehicles.” The vehicles for the show will begin arriving around 4 p.m. GSFR’s Cruise Night activities will also include a DJ spinning tunes, GSFR’s ladies’ auxiliar y ’s food stand, food trucks and a fire prevention display. There will also be GSFR apparel and patches available for purchase. “It is a family-friendly event,” said Martin. “There is food for supper, as well as dessert and ice cream trailers. “As a volunteer organization, we rely on donations to cover all of our operating costs,” Martin continued. “We do not have any fire tax in this area, so all of our money is donations. There is not a specific amount that we are hoping for. The money will help fund our general operating budget.” Formerly known as the Blue Ball Fire Company Car

Show, the event became the GSFR Cruise Night when the Liberty Fire Company and the Blue Ball Fire Company merged in 2013 to become GSFR. Operated by more than 100 active members, GSFR responds to nearly 550 calls for service each year, including medical assistance, vehicle accidents, all types of fires and even ducks caught in storm drains. “Get involved in your communi t y ; volunte er somewhere,” said Martin. “My wife and I feel our family is called to serve in this way. God has us here to be a helping hand to those in their greatest time of need. It is one of the most fulfilling moments of your life to be able to touch someone’s life when they are going through a traumatic event, knowing that you made a difference in their time of need.” For additional information, go to www .gsfr39.net.

This year, the locale is on pace to reduce that number. “Suicide is very complicated,” said McDevitt. “Not everyone who dies from suicide has a mental health issue. Prevention comes in detection and early intervention. I think our work has really forced a redirection of

the stigma. Many folks still don’t know the warning signs of suicide. Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of suicide. Those are the types of things we’re going to be talking about at the conference.” MHA of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties oversees the suicide prevention coalition, which established the conference in 2018. The organization, which employs six full-time staff members and six part-time staff members, has been operating for more than 70 years. “We’ve been around for a very long time,” said McDevitt. “A lot of people know us as ‘MHA.’ We’ve always been known for education, advocacy and support, and now I think we’re going deeper.”

GSFR’s next fundraiser is also one of its most popular. The local fire company will conduct this year’s edition of its annual Cruise Night car show from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, in the parking lot, grassy areas and surrounding roads of GSFR’s substation at 4305 Division Highway, Blue Ball. The community event is free to attend, and all proceeds from the evening’s festivities will benefit GSFR. “ We are here for any and all emergency needs in our community,” said Martin. “We live by our motto - preparation, service and professionalism. Every action we take is in preparation to ser ve with the highest level of professionalism.” More than 450 vehicles of all types, styles, makes and models are expected to participate in GSFR’s Cruise Night. At stake will be the Chief ’s Choice Trophy, which will be awarded to the vehicle that strikes the fancy of the trophy’s namesake the most. “I really enjoy seeing each car as it comes in,” said Martin, a resident of East Earl. “The variety of cars and trucks is awesome. The fireworks at the end of the night is the cherry on top. “Anyone is welcome to enter their vehicle,” he added. “These vehicles are people’s pride and joy. We expect the spectators to

Pumpkin-flavored baked goods will be served, as well as apple cake. More than 100 individuals are expected to attend Night of Blessing, and Life Awakening is hoping to raise more than $10,000 from the event. “We’re very excited,” said Ingham. “The funds will be used for next year’s kids’ camp and the book publication of ‘The Boy and the Button.’ It will also cover the costs for children to go through the Gospel process. The Gospel of Jesus Christ can change a person’s life.” Life Awakening, which is operated by three staff members and through the

assistance of volunteers, is funded through business donations, the generosity of community members and the support of churches. The Night of Blessing is the only fundraiser that the organization conducts. Originally established a s We l l s p r i n g G a rd e n Ministries, the nonprofit became Life Awakening in 2007. “Life Awakening plays more of a role in church than it does in the community, but anybody can come to us for help,” said Ingham, a resident of Ephrata. “It’s a Christian-based ministry. It’s a ministry of one on one; it’s very intimate. But over the last 25 years, we’ve affected hundreds of lives. As a ministr y, we train people in our Gospel process. community. The event will be staged over two days, Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12, in downtown Bird-in-Hand, at 2727 Old Philadelphia Pike to be precise. The festivities will begin at 4 p.m. on Sept. 11 with a pizza and pasta meal, followed by the kids fun run at 6:10 p.m., the Bird-inHand 5K at 6:30 p.m. and then a bonfire and s’mores party at 7:30 p.m. Then on the following day, Sept. 12, the Bird-in-Hand Half Marathon will kick off at 7:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top female and male finishers in 15 age categories, and among the unique prizes are handmade horseshoe medals and road apples on plaques. Contestants can register online at www.bihhalf marathon.com/road-apple/ or in person on the days of the events. “ The course features rolling hills and lush countryside,” said Wissing. “All these things make the Bird-in-Hand Marathon and 5K a special experience. But some things can’t be described, like the sense of community that follows well after the finish line is crossed.” More than 2,000 run-

ners, some from around the world, are expected to compete during the series of events. Organizers are aiming to make over $140,000, which will be applied to Hand-in-Hand Fire Company’s purchase of a $1.4 million fire engine, which will replace a 26-yearold model. More than 300 community volunteers will pitch in to assure the event runs smoothly. “In our community, as in most small towns, it’s the fire company that arrives on the scene first,” said Wissing, a native of Birdin-Hand and a resident of East Hempfield Township, “whether that be a vehicle accident, an emergency call or an actual fire. For over 100 years, our unpaid volunteers of the Hand-inHand Fire Company have protected the Bird-in-Hand community. Time and time again, we answer the call of service to care for our community.” Hand-in-Hand Fire Company, which is located at 313 Enterprise Drive, Bird-in-Hand, has been staging its community running event for 16 years. The local fire company will also conduct a chicken barbecue dinner from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5.

Organists Plan Hymn Sing The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO) will hold its annual hymn sing on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata. T he hymn sing will feature organists from the chapter, including K arl Moyer, Margaret Marssch, Gary Garletts, Daniel Brownell, and John Zielinski, who will lead

the congregation in a wide selection of traditional hymns, as well as some original compositions by Brownell and Zielinski. Audience members will also have an opportunity to request their favorite hymn. There is no charge to attend, and a freewill offering will be received. Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization, founded in 2020, HARTZ PT contributes over $1,000 per employee and more than 50 volunteer hours annually to support local nonprofits. To date, the company has raised more than $450,000 through annual initiatives like the Spring Swing Golf Tournament and the Fall Blast 5K , along with its 25th anniversary grant giveaway in 2025.
