Ryan Bomgardner Competes With Himself for Top Billing

Ryan Bomgardner is a comedian, a ventriloquist, a speaker, a musician, a storyteller and a funny guy.
Ryan and Friends is a one-man show - well, sort of.
“I find in life that there are a lot of people who have different preferences,” said Bomgardner. “We all have different perspectives. If I could bring everybody together and point out to people that we have more in common than we are different, then it’s worth it. I want to be a blessing.”
A native of Ephrata and a 42-year-old resident of Lititz, Bomgardner is the Ryan part of Ryan and Friends. There are about ten figments of his imagination - portrayed by puppets -

“My grandfather’s name was Harold,” added Bomgardner. “I had a fun voice from that. The rest of the characters are just out of my imagination. Sometimes I’ll have an idea and think, ‘There’s got to be some great comedy in there.’”

Not everybody is a leader. But almost all of us have some leadership skills.
Leadership Lancaster’s role in the community is to uncover leadership abilities, foster them and help others to make the most of them.
“A leader is someone who sees potential in either another person or they see potential in an idea,” said Sarah Kemble, program director for Leadership Lancaster. “They kind of bring everyone together to achieve goals. It’s never about themselves. They are people who put their egos aside.”
A community nonprofit located at 115 E. King St., Lancaster, Leadership Lancaster accomplishes its mission through training, exchanges of ideas, connection and collaboration and four key programs - college core class, core class, executive class and encore class. That range of classes allows Leadership Lancaster to bring out the best in individuals, regardless of their experience or their standings in the community.

“One of the things we ask our participants is ‘When did you first consider yourself a leader?’” said Kemble. “What it boils down to is that leadership is about caring about people you’re working with in the community, realizing your own unique set of skills and wanting to contribute to something bigger than yourself. At the end of the day, it’s about being your best self and achieving something great with people.

“We’re always looking to develop our programs,” Kemble continued. “We’re looking to get more involved with the community. We’re looking to work with nonprofits. We want people to feel more connected to communities. Leadership is a continuous process. We’re all works in progress.”
Last year, Leadership Lancaster worked with more than 130 individuals seeking to hone their leadership skills. Those participants ranged in age from 19 to 70 - college students, working professionals and retirees - a great majority of whom either lived or worked in Lancaster County.

“The people who are coming to us are your neighbors,” said Kemble, a resident of the Manheim area. “We’re trying to have different walks of life. They are people who have moved to the United States. We’re trying to make sure we have people representing different pockets of the community. We just want to be good stewards of our community.”
Overseen by a 15-member board, Leadership Lancaster employs Kemble, executive director Jennifer Diaz and program coordinator Sage Rivera. In addition to tuition feessome of which amount to employers covering the costs of employees’ professional development - Leadership
Lancaster is funded through grants from local foundations.
“We have some really wonderful, amazing people in our community doing great things,” said Kemble.
“We get to know these individuals personally. Lancaster is full of amazing people. Lancaster is such a strong place for collaboration. We are really good at working together and working toward a larger goal.”
In 1983, Leadership Lancaster was born out of a two-year initiative on volunteerism by the Junior League of Lancaster and the support of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce. R&B Group to Perform at Celebrate Lancaster Conflict Resolution Program Set
The City of Lancaster has announced that Grammy Award-winning R&B group 112 will headline Celebrate Lancaster on Friday, Aug. 14, in downtown Lancaster. The annual community festival draws thousands of residents and visitors to the first and 100 blocks of North Queen Street. It will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and it is free and open to the public.
Known for hits including “Peaches & Cream,” “Dance With Me,” and “Only You,” 112 rose to fame in the late 1990s and became one of R&B’s most successful groups of the era. The group’s signature sound still resonates with audiences around the world, with more than 7 million monthly listeners across streaming platforms.
This year’s Celebrate Lancaster theme, “Back to the Block,” cel -
ebrates the neighborhood block parties that have been a tradition in Lancaster for decades. In addition to the headline concert, the event will include local food trucks, classic games, artisan vendors, family-friendly activities, community resources, DJs, and live performances from regional performers. Live entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. on the stage in Binns Park, with 112 closing out the event.

Advoz will offer a Restorative Practices Toolkit Training from Monday to Wednesday, Aug. 17 to 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Millersville University. The campus is centered around George and Frederick streets in Millersville. People may choose to attend one or more days of the training.
The program is intended to help people build practical skills for interpersonal and group collaboration and restorative conflict resolution. Topics will include conflict awareness, listening-based communication, cultural considerations, de-escalating high conflict and engaging in proactive affective communication, and facilitating the group-building Circle Process.

“I suppose all of those pieces are who I am,” said Bomgardner. “I also do some stand-up comedy, singing and (serving as a master of ceremonies). I certainly love comedy and making people laugh.

“There’s always something new,” he added. “I’m always trying to do something the audience hasn’t seen before. No two shows are ever the same.”
The content of Ryan and Friends shows can only be described as spontaneous, well-rehearsed and wholesomely hysterical.
“The other day I did an event, and all the people were from New York City,” continued Bomgardner. “At one moment, they were all laughing and laughing. Then I was sharing sentimental stories, they were all emotional. If I can make people laugh and cry, then it makes me feel like I’ve done my job.”

We’re going to stay out of the bedroom and the bathroom. We do jokes adults can enjoy and kids can be in the room for. It’s important to me that I always share something inspirational.”

Growing up, Bomgardner experimented with voice inflections, and he was influenced by adults with strong character.
“I played with puppets for as long as I can remember,” said Bomgardner. “At age 10, my grandmother told me there’s something called ventriloquism. She put me up on a stage at church in front of people. By age 14, I was doing 12 shows a year. By age 18, I was doing 80 shows a year. By age 21, I was doing 130 shows a year.
“Yes, you can learn to be a ventriloquist,” concluded Bomgardner. “But ventriloquism is only interesting for 20 or 30 seconds. Then what are you going to do for 90 minutes
“I think this fundraiser is another way for a sad mom to keep alive her son’s legacy of being such a caring, giving person,” said Marie Crawford, the organizer of the JFF Cancer Benefit Sale and Jimmy’s mom. “One of his last requests was to donate to people like himself, and this is how I do it.”
“The world is a darker, sadder place without him in it,” continued Crawford. “He was loved by many, many people. We all miss his beautifully loving, caring soul. His smile was awakening; his laughter was infectious. Many of his friends still carry him with them. When he was with a friend, that is all that mattered at that moment; he gave his undivided attention.”
This year’s edition of the JFF Cancer Benefit Sale will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Garden Spot Fire Rescue’s hall at 339 E. Main St., New Holland. The community event is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.
