Who Knew Cops Could Be So Much Fun?

When we think of community, we think of home, we think of neighbors, we think of family. And security.

We don’t necessarily think of police officers when we think of community, but maybe we should.

“The goal is to engage with our community and to have a familyfilled night,” said Ryan Blessing, who’s been a West Earl Township police officer for five years. “It promotes police-community partnerships. A strong relationship with the community allows residents to have trust in the police department and shows them that we are always going to be there for them when they need us the most.”

The West Earl Township Police Department’s upcoming National Night Out will serve as a reminder of the role that law enforcement plays in the community. The local version of a national program

Cadet Campers Continue Local Firefighting Tradition

Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) is taking a proactive approach to the future of local firefighting. The organization’s Cadet Camp does not compel teens and tweens to become first responders; it inspires them to.

“(Firefighters are) something that’s going to continue to be a need,” said Cody Straub, GSFR’s assistant chief, who organizes Cadet Camp. “We are very blessed in eastern Lancaster County with the amount of volunteers we have. Not all parts of the county can say that.”

“We’d rather be proactive with volunteer firefighters, keep replenishing our supply,” he added. “The idea is that, when kids turn 14, they can join GSFR as a junior member.”

It was a memorable moment in the young life of Michael Smith, a special day.

It was a special day because it revolved around soccer. It was a special day because it was made possible by his fallen father.

“I love soccer with every bone in

my body,” said Michael. “The World Cup only happens every four years. It unites a nation, and it unites everyone. It’s a game everyone is able to play.”

Michael, a soon-to-be ninth-grader at Conestoga Valley High School and a projected member of the Buckskin boys’ soccer team, recently got to experience something most soccer

Recently, GSFR conducted the sixth edition of its annual weeklong Cadet Camp at its 339 E. Main St., New Holland, headquarters. The participants worked hard every day, experienced firsthand the first responder and firefighting lifestyle and learned a little about themselves.

“This camp is a unique opportunity for kids,” said Straub. “I tell parents, ‘Your kids are going to be doing things most 10- to 14-year-olds never would have thought about doing. We’re going to push them to meet new challenges.’ Every year, kids have a blast, they’re exhausted, but they come together as a team. It’s cool to see.”

Among the lessons and skills learned at Cadet Camp were the utilization of gear and apparatus, the basics of firefighting, search and rescue skills, pulling hose,

designed to build trust between police forces and residents will be conducted from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at Broad Street Park, 801 Broad St., Akron.

The event is free, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

The West Earl Township Police Department serves and protects West Earl Township, Akron Borough, East Earl Township and New Holland.

“National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement and provides a great opportunity to bring everyone together under positive circumstances with the goal of keeping our communities safe,” said West Earl Township police chief Eric Higgins. “We look forward to the opportunity to engage with the community and getting to know each other.”

National Night Out is also a lot of fun. The event will offer delightful dishes from 11 food trucks, free

snacks, a hydration station, pony rides, balloon art, games, prizes, a candy scramble and a car show. Also featured will be police K-9 demonstrations, a department patrol car, fire apparatus, and first responder and EMS demonstrations, all of which are designed to be informational, educational and entertaining.

About 2,500 guests are expected to attend. The West Earl Township Police Department has been planning the specifics and details of National Night Out since April.

“I enjoy seeing the community come out to support their police agency,” said Blessing. “You see all types of people. Seeing them have fun with their children is my favorite part.”

The West Earl Township Police Department hosted its initial National Night Out event in 2020. The law-enforcement agency also conducts other community events, like “Coffee With a Cop” and “Popsicle With a Cop.”

Ephrata Cloiser Plans Ice Cream Social

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will open its grounds to the community on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. for its annual ice cream social. This fundraising event, a project of the Ephrata Cloister Associates in partnership with the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission, will feature ice cream and brownie sundaes scooped by celebrity dippers, including WIOV morning radio host Casey Allyn, Ephrata Mayor Tom Reinhold, journalist and novelist Larry Alexander, state Rep. Keith Greiner, and Blue Ridge’s Cindy Mellinger. The event is sponsored by Blue Ridge. The New Cloister Restaurant will provide the ice cream. A highlight of the event will be nature crafts and games under the tent in the meadow. Prizes will be awarded for the first 50 children who complete the Nature Scavenger Hunt. Children can make their own wooden necklaces and explore the nature trail along the Cocalico Creek. Attendees can learn more about the Historic Landscape Restoration Initiative that will transform the property into a natural habitat for local wildlife, flowers, and plants.

Guides in historical costumes will be stationed in the buildings to greet visitors and interpret the history of the 18th-century structures. The acoustic duo the Groove Slingers will perform from 1 to 4 p.m. in the new amphitheater. The duo plays a variety of blues, rock, jazz, country, bluegrass, and pop, as well as original music.

Visitors are encouraged to stroll the grounds of the Cloister, pet therapy dogs from Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS), and watch demonstrations by the Lancaster Spinners and Weavers Guild and Friends. Visitors will also be able to play Colonial games and try their hand at the art of Colonial printing on the reproduction printing press.

Event attendees may also learn more about charity in Ephrata and visit with representatives of local nonprofits.

The museum store will feature 18th-century reproduction toys, crafts, and souvenirs; books of historical interest; and local handmade arts and crafts. Visitors may also purchase cards, candles, pottery, sleigh bells, and chocolate in the store.

Tickets for the event will be available for purchase in the Visitor Center on the day of the event. There is a discount for members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates and youths ages 6 to 10, and children 5 and younger will be admitted free of charge.

fans only get a chance to dream of. On the Fourth of July in historic Philadelphia, Michael served as a flagbearer during a celebratory pregame ceremony prior to the 2026 FIFA World Cup round-of-16 game between France and Paraguay.

It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity made possible through the United States’Navy Gold Star program, which supports family members of sailors who died in the line of duty. Michael’s dad, Captain David Smith, passed away due to complications from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Italy on March 17, 2013, when Michael was 17 months old.

“I think the best part was the opportunity; not everyone gets to do this,” said Lisa Smith, Michael’s mom. “When he was walking onto the field, he was taking it all in, and that was one of those core memories. When he was in the tunnel (leading onto the field), he saw all the players. I just know it was a really special moment walking out on the field at a World Cup game and being a part of it.”

who processed onto the grass of Philadelphia Stadium. The students lined up in a shape that resembled the World Cup trophy.

Michael then got a chance to watch the match between France and Paraguay from the stands.

“It was really fun in general,” said Michael, who plays center back and outside back when he’s not viewing World Cup games in person. “It’s really hard to describe in words. My favorite part was seeing all the players in the tunnel, walking past me.

“When I was there, I was thinking about how cool it was and what was going on in the game,” said Michael. “(My dad) was trying to be a part of it, but there were so many things I had to focus on. The whole experience was special.”

“I know (David) was watching (Michael) from above,” said Lisa. “I know he was proud of him. Something like that makes parents proud of their kids.”

Because of his age, Michael doesn’t have many recollections of his father. What he does know was passed on to him from Lisa.

“I don’t really know anything about him,” said Michael, who began playing soccer when he was 3 years

old. “My mom says I look like him and I kind of act like him.”

“All of our military members serve for a purpose, to protect our freedom and to protect everyone’s loved ones,” said Lisa. “When we lose our loved ones, our lives don’t

end; it just looks a little different. Sometimes we get to do things we wouldn’t normally get to do. When we do those things, our person is in the forefront of our minds.”

Storytelling Night Planned

Mennonite Life will host its annual Storytelling Night on Monday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola. Felixa Valladares de Kunkle and Conrad Kanagy will relate short-form anecdotes drawn from their lives and experiences.

Kunkle began serving with LMC: A Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches in March 2019 and currently serves as office coordinator, prayer facilitator, and Hispanic ministry support. Originally from Honduras, she is fluent in Spanish, English, and German and uses her language skills to help build connections and foster communication across cultures within the LMC community. She is passionate about encouraging prayer, supporting leaders, and helping people feel

welcomed, valued, and included. Kanagy is a professor emeritus of sociology at Elizabethtown College. He directed studies of Mennonite Church USA and a study of Anabaptists in 10 countries, and he was a longtime pastor at Elizabethtown Mennonite Church. He also serves as publisher and executive editor of Santos Books. Conrad and his wife, Heidi, have been married for 37 years. They have an adult son and attend Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church. The event is free of charge, and donations will be received for the speakers as well as Mennonite Life’s ongoing storytelling and conservation efforts. forceful entry, throwing ladders, setting up fire hydrants, water spraying techniques, an obstacle course, and cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The campers ate lunch together each day, and at the end of the week they displayed the skills they had learned for a gathering of parents and friends.

“It’s hard work,” said Straub, a resident of East Earl Township. “We put kids through a lot of stuff and scenarios. It’s training. Everybody had this determination. That excitement never went away. That excitement carried us through the week.

“We’re trying to give kids a chance to experience firefighting, with the hope that they will sometime join,”

Straub continued. “It’s teaching kids to give back to the community, work as a team and face challenges.”

Around 25 kids attended Cadet Camp. Most of them were from the Garden Spot area, but some reside in Millersville, Gap and communities outside of Lancaster County.

“A lot of the kids have ties to the fire service,” said Straub. “Some of the kids saw flyers at school or on Facebook and just wanted to try it. It was the first time they ever thought about this.”

Cadet Camp was staffed daily by more than 15 instructors - GSFR members and firefighters from neighboring firehouses. Also

assisting with instruction were officers from area police and law enforcement departments and first responders from local emergency medical service agencies.

“When we first created the camp, we wanted to make it unique,” said Straub. “We didn’t want to just show kids. We build all these things out. They’re doing everything but going into a burning building and putting a fire out.”

In addition to 339 E. Main St., GSFR operates stations at 624 W. Main St., New Holland, and at 4305 Division Highway, Blue Ball. About 75 active members are a part of GSFR’s operations.
