Get the Jesus Advantage Open house to celebrate two years of freedom

on Buch, senior pastor with Breakout Ministries, traces the organization’s Jesus Advantage addiction recovery to the emotional healing offered by the Spiritual Boot Camp the ministry has offered since 2008. “A friend who works for Teen Challenge called it JA (Jesus Advantage). “In the recovery world, we are presenting it as JA,” said Buch. “ We said, ‘Let’s do the Jesus Advantage and teach how to get free.’” Buch explained that while many people try to willfully stop addiction, JA includes a spiritual component that can lead to transformation. JA, which opens with a meal, has been offered each Saturday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for two years now. On Saturday, June 3, from 5 to 8 p.m., JA will hold an anniversary open house at Breakout, 2400 Anita Court, Leola. The event will feature a free meal with

coffee and tea. “There will be fellowship, and we will talk about what we do,” said Buch, who added that the evening will include testimonies from people who have been positively influenced to stay free from addiction.

“It is a faith-based approach to recovery ... People get saved and develop an internal perspective on the meaning of life.” Breakout associate pastor Rob Weatherholtz, who specializes in addiction recovery and discipleship, said that JA focuses on continuing recovery from addiction. “You have to be delivered from that lifestyle and everything that has to do with it,” said Weatherholtz. “You have to understand the battlefield that you’re on.” Weatherholtz added that while behavior modification

and conflict resolution techniques are part of addiction recovery, they do not offer you a relationship with Christ that leads to transformation. “It is a faith-based approach to recovery,” he said. “People get saved and develop an internal perspective on the meaning of life.” Buch noted that the program’s tagline is “Get free … stay free.” “A lot of people are working on getting free,” he said. “(They ask), ‘How do I get out of this loop?’ But we are working on once you do get freedom, how do you stay free? We focus on that relationship with God, others, and accountability.” More information about the program may be found at www.break outministries.org. Local man recalls his youthful love of wheels BY ANN MEAD ASH

Dean Graybill in his garage with a car he calls “part of the family,” a 1967 Plymouth Satellite.

Dean Graybill of Paradise was known for telling stories of his experiences with automobiles. He considered writing a book to share with family, but after talking to some friends, he realized that his tales might appeal to a wider audience. “(They) said it would be of great local interest,” reported Dean. “They said, ‘I would buy that. People would love that.’” Working with Masthof

Press of Morgantown, Dean has produced 151 pages of 165 stories with the title “Burning Rubber, Slamming Gears, & Cheap Gas,” published in mid-March. The pages are punctuated by color and blackand-white photos of vintage automobiles and trucks. Dean began writing about five years ago by sitting at the computer while listening to classic rock ’n’ roll. “It just took me back,” said Dean of the process. “If it had to do with cars, it had stuck in my memory.” Editor Keith Rohrer added color and detail to Dean’s recollections.

On April 16 at 9 a.m., more than 60 families gathered at the Shaarai Shomayim Temple in downtown Lancaster for Mitzvah Day, an annual celebration of volunteerism that serves local nonprofit organizations by doing projects such as painting, packing and cooking food, cleaning parks, and more. A short service was held before the nearly 150 volunteers set out to fulfill the Jewish commandment of doing mitzvahs - good deeds - in the form

of community services. Bob Houghton, Sh’arim administrator with congregation Shaarai Shomayim, said that the tradition began in the mid-1990s when Rabbi Jack Paskoff suggested the event. “For the most part, many of those organizations have longstanding relationships with us not just on Mitzvah Day,” said Houghton, who noted that during a five-day summer camp for children, older participants take part in community service work on three days.
