Music is contagious.
Because the joy for singing that the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster exudes is so impactful, it is naturally and powerfully transmitted to
its audiences. Audience members can’t help but experience the joy of singing on a whole other frequency.
The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster will bless the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd with that joy for singing at the church’s upcoming event.
“I think there’s a direct correlation between the choir and the audience,” said Chuck Book, who’s been the communications director at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd for more than 20 years. “A singer who enjoys singing brings joy and conveys it to the

The Lancaster Chapter, National Railway Historical Society (NRHS), which aims to preserve history and railroad artifacts, as well as educate the public about railroading and its history, is in the middle of celebrating its 90th anniversary.
According to a history of the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS, provided by chapter historian Linda Himpsl, it began in 1934 when a few young railroad and trolley enthusiasts met in an old trolley in Neffsville, forming the Lancaster Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. In 1935, the group merged with the Interstate Trolley Club and other organizations to form the NRHS. The Lancaster Chapter was the first charter organized in the NRHS, launching on Oct. 13, 1935.

Scouting America’s current flag offers a fresh, clean look that features a small image of an eagle and the colors of our country. It symbolizes the morals, commitment and tradition that Scouting America stands for.
In this particular instance, the passing, raising and lowering of that Scouting America flag represents the role that Scouting has played in the history of our nation.
“There are pride and meaning attached to all flags, and I think that’s true of the Scouting America flag,”

Today, chapter meetings are held in the 1882 freight station in Christiana, which was restored by the chapter in 1998. Members, who come from various backgrounds, all share a love of railroading. “Most people have an interest in railroads, history or just trains in general. Very few of us actually worked for the railroad,” noted Steve Himpsl, second director. “Some have model trains. They are avid collectors.”
“Some have fathers or grandfathers who worked the railroad,” added Linda.
Last October, chapter members and invited guests celebrated the milestone during a chapter meeting at the freight station where they enjoyed cake and ice cream and a display of

said Logan Ginder, the marketing and membership coordinator of Scouting America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council. “It represents Scouting and the state of Pennsylvania. I think it’s important just because we are Scouting America, and we’re one of the largest youth programs across the country. Scouting America has been present for a long time, and the mission hasn’t changed: for youths to become leaders and members of communities and for instilling ethics into our youths.”
By all accounts, Scouting America’s recent Flags Across the Commonwealth event celebrating this year’s 250th anniversary of the United States of America’s independence was a success. The local Pennsylvania Dutch Coun-
cil of Scouting America, which serves youths in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, participated in the celebration during a 45-minute ceremony at the Lancaster County Courthouse, 50 N. Duke St., Lancaster, on Feb. 17.
“It was designed to unite the 67 counties in Pennsylvania,” said Ginder, “and celebrate America’s 250th anniversary and Scouting’s commitment to our community. Community pride was the vibe, and it came at a time when it may be more important than ever to show community pride. There was also a little bit of national pride involved.”
During the ceremony, members of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council raised and lowered the Scouting America flag at the flagpole at the Lancaster County Courthouse. The celebration also included addresses and remarks from local dignitaries and government officials.
United States. Hopefully, the takeaway from the Scouts is that it’s important for them to be a part of their communities. It’s a celebration throughout the state, so we hope they felt like they were part of something larger.”
In 1776, the United States was established when 13 original colonies broke from British rule. In 1910, Boy Scouts of America was formed in Washington, D.C.
“We provide Scouting programs to any and all youths in Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Ginder. “We’re preparing youths to make ethical decisions through Scouting values.”
One of 20 in the state, the Pennsylvania Dutch Council was chartered in 1971. Currently, more than 2,000 youths - boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 17 - are involved with Scouting America in the Pennsylvania Dutch Council.

About 30 individuals attended the Flags Across the Commonwealth ceremony, including members of Scouting units Pack 93 of Lititz, Troop and Pack 76 from Quarryville and Troop 56 of Strasburg.
“It was definitely a special event for the 250th anniversary of our country,” said Ginder, a resident of Elizabethtown. “It’s not something we do every year. What it should mean to the Scouts is a sense of pride in their organization.”
As part of the Flags Across the Commonwealth program, the Scouting America flag’s journey began in Philadelphia on Feb. 8, the birthday of Scouting America, formerly known as Boy Scouts of America. After it was received in Lancaster and signed by participants at the local ceremony, the Scouting America flag was passed on to Pennsylvania Dutch Council members in Lebanon, who conducted a similar local service at the Lebanon County Courthouse on Feb. 18.
“What we’re hoping for with the whole event across the state is to celebrate our enduring ideals of freedom and civic pride,” said Ginder. “We’re reaffirming values that continue to strengthen the
“Scouting is alive and active in our communities,” he added. “Some people don’t realize we’re still out there. We haven’t fallen by the wayside. We’re still a very prominent program.”
The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, which is headquartered at 245 Bloomfield Drive, Suite 212-218, Lititz, is funded through the generosity of donors, partners and business sponsors. The local council employs 11 workers, some of whom are part time, and benefits from contributions from 1,200 volunteers, many of whom work directly with Scouts.
“(Scouting is) constantly growing and changing,” said Ginder. “They’re adding more programs and more merit badges. Our facilities are being updated on a regular basis. They’re more effective programs for our youths. Our end goal is to provide quality programs to the youths in our council.”
“They’re members of our community,” said Ginder. “They’re youths we strive to serve through our programs. They’re our Scouting family.”

The Lancaster Mennonite kindergartner recently released her third book, “Bella’s Big Personality Activities Book,” on March 7, her 6th birthday. The book includes mazes, tracing, crossword puzzles, connect the dots, and scavenger hunts. All three publications are available on Amazon.
Bella published her debut work, “Bella’s Big Personality,” on her 5th birthday. “The book is about my big personality when I make a friend feel better,” the bubbly Manheim Township resident said. “We go to the beach, and then at the end we go to a park.”
She got some assistance from her mother. “We wrote the book together,” Marty Durham said. “Bella told me the friend she wanted in it, how she wanted to cheer him up. It’s a very popular story. She illustrated what it was that she wanted. I think that’s so important in the world and society we live in today, where kids are into electronics. They’re into what they’re seeing on social media.”
Marty continued, “Her children’s book is something really positive about just how to have a fun day with clean fun and enjoy

A few months later came “Bella’s Big Personality Coloring Book.” “People can color me in the pond with the ducks, me in the pond with the frogs, and they can color my house,” said Bella, who also loves math and swingsets. “They can color me and my mom (Marty). They can color me singing, playing at the park.”
“Bella loves to color, so I asked if we could create a coloring book that goes along with the personalities,” said Marty. That led to the activity book. “In school, she’s tracing letters, she’s learning shapes, so the book is also educational,” Marty stated. “It could be for age 3 on up. Teenagers, adults, everyone can just enjoy the activities book as well as the coloring book.”
Writing comes naturally for Bella. “She has such a creative gene inside of her,” Marty said. “She came home one day and said, ‘Look at this book.’ They check out library books at Lancaster Mennonite at her age, two books every week, and then they have to return them. So she’s been reading books constantly when she was 4 (years old) to going into 5. As she was reading them, she said to me one day, ‘I should have a book.’”
Bella’s innate qualities are evident in her books.

“Everyone talks about her outgoing personality, how she’s sweet, she’s loving, she loves God,” Marty said.
“She has this very business entrepreneurial mindset.”
Bella is not content with simply writing, and she is already making plans to expand her brand. “I want to have a Bella car, a Bella teddy bear, a Bella dollhouse, a Bella app,” she said. “I want everything in this whole entire world to be full of Bellas.”

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster will be singing at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 12. The performance, which is part of the church’s fine arts series, is free to attend, and a goodwill offering that will help fund the series will be accepted.
“You have all these angelic voices coming together, and that sound is different than an adult choir’s,” said Book. “It’s such an array of ages. These kids are into it. When you think about having these kids involved, that’s what they’re there for. They want to sing. There’s so much excitement. It’s what these kids love doing, and that’s what they work for.”
The uplifting concert is expected to last about 90 minutes. The show will include an intermission.
Following the performance, a reception fea -
turing light refreshments and held in the church’s
All-Saints Hall will allow audience members to meet the singers of the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster.
“I haven’t had the privilege of hearing them, but everyone I’ve talked to has said these folks are spectacular,” said Book, a resident of Lebanon. “We are excited and proud to host the Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster. They honor and celebrate music as a gift from God.”
“We usually have a nice turnout, and people are generally appreciative,” he added. “It’s the bringing together of people for a common benefit, to enjoy music.”
About 250 individuals are expected to attend the concert, members of the congregation and members of surrounding communities.
“They’re a church-centered repertoire, but it’s not going to be all church music,” said Book. “It’s going to be a variety of things. We want to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. I would anticipate it being a choral blend of
music to your ears. With the kids themselves, they break them up into different choirs. The Mennonite Children’s Choir has quite a following.”
The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster, which is headed by artistic director Rosemary Blessing, features kids between the ages of 5 and 18 who represent 12 religious denominations, 55 church congregations and 45 schools. Formed in 1998, the choir rehearses weekly, performs locally and embarks on summer tours across the United States and around the world.
The Fine Arts Series at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, which was established more than 30 years ago, is made up of four concerts staged throughout the year. The next performance in the series will be conducted at the church at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, and will feature the Lancaster British Brass Band.
“The Fine Arts Series has really blossomed over the last 30 years,” said Book. “We want to reach out to

Tony White, NRHS president, presented the Lancaster Chapter a Certificate of Recognition for its 90th anniversary and for being the first charter chapter of the organization. One of the chapter’s major accomplishments was the restoration of the freight station, located at 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana. Notably, the station was featured in the 1985 movie “Witness” starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.
According to Linda, the two-story building was moved east 40 feet to its present location in 1903 to install additional track. Passenger service ceased in 1907, when the new Christiana passenger station on the opposite side of the tracks was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad; it terminated service in 1952. Amtrak now leases the 1888 freight station building, gang house, 1907 passenger station and trackside property to the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS. The chapter also maintains a Conrail caboose on-site.

“We have a deck and we often have people come and hang out on the deck and watch the trains,” Steve said. “We want to get people into the station and to view the caboose.”
The Lancaster Chapter, NRHS members have restored, preserved and donated many train- and rail-related projects to Lancaster County and surrounding communities through the years, including a trolley from Lancaster, a Reading Railroad Company crossing watchman’s box and various railroad cars. The chapter has also organized Amtrak rail trips to many places, including Horseshoe Curve; western Pennsylvania; and Mystic Seaport, Conn. “Amtrak would add passenger cars on their trains to accommodate how many tickets were sold,” Steve explained. “We would sell 18-car trains.”

“We (might meet) at Strasburg Rail Road and ride the train, and when it comes back we have our meeting on the train. We mix it up,” noted Linda.
Members pay a yearly fee, which gets them the Lancaster Dispatcher, the chapter’s monthly newsletter. New members are welcome. “Many young people are not interested in railroading anymore because they did not grow up with it,” noted Steve. “We are more than happy to have young people come in and join us.”
