The former FDNY ladder truck that 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services is working on is a 2001 Seagrave Truck Number 9 Aerial Scope, with a bucket on the end of its ladder. To this point, 10-8’s technicians have performed about 25 hours of work on the ladder truck, replacing windows and a thermostat and checking its engine and brakes.

The tower ladder truck was first taken to 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services for reconditioning in September of 2025.

“It’s just fundamental stuff for now,” said Fisher, a resident of Lititz. “We’re a Seagrave dealer, and the owner reached out to us. He needed help, and we told him we’d help him out where we can. Renovations do get pretty labor intensive.”

Paul Medeiros, a resident of North Carolina who is associated with the Virginia Fire Museum and the Old Dominion Historical Fire Society, is the owner of the Seagrave ladder truck.

“(10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services is) helping out because of the meaning of the project,” said Medeiros. “They’re a humble group. They’re helping me as much as

Medeiros’ 2001 tower ladder truck was damaged at the World Trade Center in New York City on 9/11.

Four of the fire engine’s 14 crew members lost their lives at the Twin Towers that day.

“We knew about 10-8, so we took it there,” said Medeiros. “They’ve done a lot of work, but they’re in a holding pattern now. If I can get some donations, we can keep it rolling.”

Medeiros originally purchased the tower ladder truck for $10,000 at an auction site.

“It happened fast,” said Medeiros. “The truck was going to a scrap yard, and we saved it. Trucks like that get decommissioned and they get torn apart. I’ve been through a lot with it.”

Medeiros’ plans for the 2001 Seagrave fire engine include getting it drivable so the truck can take part in a commemoration of

the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy in Harrisburg in July.

“That’s what we’re hoping will be our outcome,” said Medeiros.

“I would say we’re about halfway to where (Medeiros) wants it to be,” said Fisher. “We want to make sure it starts. He may want to do something to it himself. But no one is getting rich on this project.”

A full-service Seagrave fire trucks and Life Line ambulances dealer, 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services typically performs about two renovations a year.

“It’s a smaller part of our business,” said Fisher. “The emergency world is very unique. There’s a lot going on with a fire truck. We do everything the customer asks, and we give them a quality product.”

To learn how to donate to the project, call or text Medeiros at 704-634-5660.

Have You Ever Really Considered the Hat?

Hats are as old as humans’ needs to keep their heads warm and shade their eyes from the sun. At one point of their evolution, hats became fashion statements, the perfect toppings for wardrobe ensembles.

The history of hats in Lancaster County parallels that of the larger society in which it dwells, with one glaring exception.

will focus on the versatility of hats, their functionality and style, as well as their local history, especially how it relates to the iconic Bollman Hat Company in Adamstown.

The “Hats!” program is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.

evacuation helicopter and a gunship, depending upon the model and how you deployed it.”

“I have always loved hats, and I often wear hats,” said Lisa High, who will be donning a hat during her upcoming talk at Garden Spot Village. “I just love wearing hats. Hats are seasonal, hats are an accessory and some people have to wear hats to work. Most of the time I wear hats. Some people love shoes. I love hats.”

High will present her informational, educational and entertaining program at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, inside the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. High’s program is simply titled “Hats!” and

“For the program, history gives you a perspective of what kinds of hats people were wearing,” said High. “The style may reflect what’s going on in that period of history. They reflect each other. I’m presenting history in this program. It’s history as it relates to hats and to this time period and how it relates to the Bollman Hat Company.”

“I’m a librarian,” added High. “I read a lot, all different genres, but especially history. We can learn from our past.”

Sponsored by the New Holland Area Historical Society, High’s program will last about an hour. She will address her audience for the initial 45 minutes and then entertain questions and comments over the final portion.

“My style is energetic, enthusiastic, educational and fun,” said High, a resident of Salisbury Township. “We try on hats. The audience can participate as we talk about the history of hats. It’s for men and women. It’s an interactive presentation that uses historic reproductions of hats.”

High’s presentation will include a collection of 16 women’s hats and 16 men’s hats - each from a different period of time - on loan from the Bollman Hat Company. Those planning to attend the program are

More of an organization than a club, the Liberty Warbird Association (LWA) preserves, maintains and deploys a 1967 Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, affectionately dubbed Huey 823. LWA houses its Huey 823 in a hangar in Suite T at the Lancaster Airport, 500 Airport Road, Lititz, where it also maintains an office and from which it flies missions.

Members of LWA gather on Saturdays at Lancaster Airport to work on and maintain the aircraft. Those gatherings are open to the public, but rides on the helicopter aren’t offered.

“It is absolutely open to the public and we encourage people to come out to the hangar, see the aircraft and talk to the people who maintain it,” said Kleiner. “Any time we are at the hangar, you can do that. For any veteran or veteran group, we can set up a special private visit to the hangar.”

LWA’s purpose and reason for existing is just that - to honor veterans, especially from the Vietnam era, and educate others on the role that the Huey played in that war. LWA accomplishes its mission by flying to and attending activities designed to recognize veterans.

Each year, LWA flies Huey 823 to the Lebanon VA Medical Center to honor veterans receiving treatment there and their caregivers.

“We don’t do political events, religious events or commercial events,” said Kleiner. “But if someone is creating an event honoring veterans, we will participate. We show people how the aircraft works. We talk about the type of missions it flew in Vietnam. We want to educate people about the role that Hueys

played in Vietnam. A lot of people see the pictures but don’t understand what it did, which was basically everything.”

“When Vietnam veterans came home from the war, they didn’t get a lot of respect,” he continued. “We want them to get that honor and respect they deserve. We want to restore the pride of all veterans, but especially the Vietnam veterans. When people come out and see it, it takes them back. If you’ve ever been around a Huey, it has a very distinct sound, and you can smell the burning of jet fuel. When people can relate to it, it makes a big difference.”

There are about 40 active volunteers involved with LWA and another 50 individuals who play a more supportive role in the organization. More than 25 of those members either flew helicopters or maintained them during the Vietnam War or in peace time.

“(Huey 823) requires about 10 hours of maintenance for every hour you fly it,” said Kleiner. “It burns 95 gallons of jet fuel per hour. It has a two-hour flight range. If a group wants us to fly a mission for them, they have to basically do the fundraising.”

LWA was formed in 2011 after Huey 823 was purchased for $600,000 in California, then flown to Lancaster. During its wartime service from 1968 to 1970, Huey 823 flew 1,400 hours in Vietnam.

More than 12,000 helicopters of all types were deployed during the Vietnam War, 7,555 of which were Hueys.

“In the early 2000s, the Army divested itself of all Hueys,” said Kleiner. “This one went to a training school for mechanics. When the organization first started, (officials) were doing a lot of events at air shows and they were able to provide rides. But the FAA said, ‘We don’t think you should be doing that without a certain approval.’”

During their military service, Hueys were operated by crews of four and could carry as many as 10 soldiers. Hueys could reach a top speed of 127 miles an hour.

Breaking Barriers With Humor and Hope

When Drew Beekler takes the stage at a special event for The Janus School, he won’t just deliver punchlines. He’ll share a powerful story of perseverance, creativity and what can happen when you embrace the way you learn. The school will host “Breaking Barriers: A Night of Humor and Hope With Drew Beekler” on Friday, March 20, at 7 p.m. at its campus, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy.

The idea for the program came about after Beekler’s mother, Julie Barker, came to an event at the school last year and was struck by the hardworking students she met.

“She was reminded of the challenges her own son endured throughout school and thought that Drew’s story would resonate with our students,” recalled Brenda Keller, director of academics at The Janus School. Soon, Keller realized Beekler’s message would appeal beyond the students, so the school decided to host a night for the community.

“Drew’s message of perseverance and following your passion is universal,” Keller said. “Had he accepted the limits others put on him, he likely would not be where he is today. We can’t wait for him to be here to share his story with our students as well as the larger community. It will be an inspiring experience for anyone who attends.”

After spending time with the students and staff during the school day and addressing them in an assembly presentation, Beekler will start the evening with a brief family-friendly comedy set.

“He will then share his story and perspective of being a student with learning challenges, including dyslexia, and his experience of discovering his artistic talents,” Keller said. “Drew will share more about how he embraced those differences and was able to empower himself with strategies and tools that would give him the confidence to pursue a successful visual arts career and now stand-up comedy.” Barker will also speak

at the event, sharing her perspective and how significant a role support and resources play in a student’s success.

A Lancaster County native, Beekler has an impressive career in visual arts and has won an Emmy award for his special effects work.

Along with remarks from Beekler and Barker, the event will feature a book giveaway, door prizes and resources for families, sponsor tables and a silent auction/basket giveaway, as well as a student-run snack bar with items for sale. Beekler will offer a meetand-greet opportunity following the presentation.

The Janus School is the only independent school in central Pennsylvania dedicated to helping students with a language- or mathbased learning disability, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, executive function difficulties, a nonverbal learning disorder or an auditory processing disorder. It serves students from seven surrounding counties at its Mount Joy

campus.

“At Janus, our mission is centered on empowering students with learning differences to recognize their strengths and thrive,”

Keller said. “The ‘Breaking Barriers’ series is a natural extension of that mission. We want our students to see successful adults who share similar challenges. We also want our community to better understand the incredible potential that exists within students who simply learn differently.”

Keller emphasized that awareness leads to understanding and understanding leads to opportunity.

“Hats have a purpose,” said High. “Over the years, hats were worn as protection for your head. In the military, hats are worn as part of uniforms. There are all kinds of hats people have worn for different purposes throughout the ages. I invite people to journey back in time to see the evolution of hats.”

its working factory.

“I am not an employee of the Bollman Hat Company,” said High. “I put together this program because I love hats. They consider me an ambassador. I want people to know about this wonderful company that’s right in our backyard. It’s Lancaster County history. That’s what’s important to me.”

“Even if you’re there to look, it’s fun,” said Papa Tater. “There will be thousands of tricks and props, everything from beginner’s magic to stage illusions. Every year there is something I never knew existed or something I never thought I’d see in person. There are no performances, no scheduled events. But if you ask, someone will do a trick. We’re also trying to expand the awareness of magic and encourage new magicians.”

“There are some people who come for the social aspect,” continued Papa Tater. “We get a lot of magicians who are looking for certain types of magic. Some people collect magic. There are very few magic shops anymore, and we get such a big variety of things.”

Last year, the Pennsyl -

from pg 1

vania Entertainers’ Swap Meet and Sale took in about $1,200 for Steps to Success. Since its inception in 2015, the convention has raised nearly $10,000 for the local nonprofit.

This year, the raised funds will go toward improvements in educational and child care services for kids.

“I really enjoy the feeling that this is a positive in the magic community,” said Papa Tater. “Almost everyone there is saying every year, ‘You’re doing this again, right?’ Every year the child care center makes more than it did the year before.”

One of the magicians’ most common tricks involves accumulating treasure.

“With magic, there are thousands of tricks I could buy,” said Papa Tater. “When I first started, I was buying everything I had interest in. I realized there were other magicians who had the same issues. We realized this would be a fun event to do, that it could be a fundraiser and that Steps to Success could benefit. Now we’ve been doing it 11 years, and it’s kind of gotten into my blood.”

Founded by Michelle in 1995, Steps to Success is funded through private pay, subsidies from the state, fundraisers and donations. Steps to Success serves about 280 children from six weeks to 12 years old and employs nearly 50 staff members.

that bridge, and we want to serve our community with this important type of outreach,” she said. “If even one attendee leaves that evening believing more fully in their own potential, then we’ve accomplished exactly what we set out to do.”

Proceeds from the event will support program expenses and operations of The Janus School. Sponsors, including community businesses, are invited to join the school in presenting “Breaking Barriers” to celebrate resilience, education, empowerment and the power of laughter and joy, Keller shared.

“'Breaking Barriers’ isn’t just a program - it’s an experience,” Keller said. “Drew Beekler’s personality is captivating, and he brings natural humor, honesty and talent together in a way that makes people feel seen and inspired. Whether you’re a parent, educator, student or community member, you will walk away

thinking differently about learning, resilience and potential.”

She said the evening will be uplifting, entertaining and deeply meaningful.

“So many families and educators have been touched by dyslexia, ADHD or other learning differences,” Keller remarked. “Hearing from someone who has lived that experience - and thrived - is powerful. Drew’s story resonates not just with students who struggle, but with anyone who has ever felt underestimated. There’s something incredibly special about gathering as a community around a message of perseverance and possibility. People desire hope and celebration, and this event will deliver that.”
