Current Walls Can’t Contain Veritas Academy’s Growth

Veritas Academy is in the growth business, and business is booming.

It’s the type of growth that could be characterized as development. It’s the type of growth that originates from within. It’s the kind of growth that is fostered in a healthy environment.

“When God gives growth, you’ve got to recognize that,” said Ty Fischer, who’s been the head of school at Veritas Academy for 29 years. “Here at Veritas, our effort has been toward the mission of growing and cultivating students. We have seen growth, and at the core of that growth is an exceptional faculty. What we’re doing is preparing these young men and women to respond to callings and take God with them.”

Veritas Academy’s current expansion project will provide the

classical Christian school with greater abilities to provide better educational opportunities to more students from preschool to 12th grade. After Veritas Academy doubled its student population over

the last seven years, the school is now doubling the size of its learning space at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola.

Treasures Are Easy to Find at

We are called to be good stewards of the Earth, to cherish the gifts we have been given and to repurpose what we don’t want or need. At the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland, those principles are brought to life and put into practice, all for the good of others and ourselves.

“We have people who are buying furniture pieces and refinishing them or repurposing them,” said Sherry Duda, who’s been a co-general manager of the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland for six years. “We feel we save a lot of clothing from going to the landfill. If we can’t sell it, we’ll send it to resource centers. We try to recycle as much as we possibly can. That is a big part of what we do, and I don’t think the community knows about it.”

Always keep your eye on the target. Doing the same thing in the same way over and over and over again can provide desirable results. Following through is important.

Some of the same things that produce success in archery can also produce success in other areas of life.

Bob Lauffer is a coach and a mentor in both archery and in other interests of life.

Providing a unique and economical shopping experience is another big part of what the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland does. The thrift store, which is located at 707 W. Main St., New Holland, sells gently used or new home décor, jewelry, books, housewares, clothing and furniture.

for its $7 million expansion project on Jan. 20. A few days earlier, the project experienced a soft opening in the form of some initial excavating.

The expansion project is expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2026-27 school year.

“This expansion is not just about numbers,” said Fischer. “Everything we do here harkens back to the Bible and a classical Christian education. What this expansion will allow us to do is more fully form our students. In that formation, we want them to have those skills from a classical liberal arts education.”

campaign project to financially support the expansion in the summer of 2022. As it neared the finish line, Veritas dubbed the final push for the last $700,000 “A Place for We.”

The library at Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will be open on three upcoming Saturdays, Feb. 21, March 21, and April 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Mennonite Life Museum and museum store will be open as well. The library offers a wealth of research materials on the Mennonite community’s rich history in Lancaster County, including deeds, personal papers, church records, and genealogy resources. As the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, guests

are invited to research stories of migration, nonresistance, service, and faith through the papers in the archives and library.

The library is open to the public. Use of the library’s research materials is complimentary for Mennonite Life members and is available for a fee per day for nonmembers. Mennonite Life staff members and volunteers will be on hand to assist researchers. Visitors are encouraged to preregister at www .mennonitelife.org/ events and mention specific research topics they hope to explore.

Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.

The two-story expansion project is being constructed on the west side of Veritas Academy’s 11-acre campus. The project will provide Veritas with a new gymnasium, more classrooms, a common area and an updated science lab.

“We’ve run out of space,” said Fischer. “Almost all of our space right now is classroom space. The expansion project will just about double our square footage. It will provide our faculty with opportunities to better support our entire program.”

“We love our building,” added Fischer. “The great thing is that our architects took some of the thematic aspects of the building and built it into the new construction. It looks classical. We don’t want our building to be extravagant, but we want it to be functional and beautiful.”

Veritas Academy embarked on a capital

“God has blessed us. He’s been very good to us,” said Fischer, a resident of Leola. “This is the first major capital campaign and construction campaign we’ve done at the school. We received a lot of feedback from donors, and the last 10% was the public phase of the campaign. A lot of the giving was in the quiet phase of the plan. All glory be to God. He used the generosity of the community to make it possible. As we faithfully went out to our community, God opened so many hearts to make this possible.”

Currently, there are 409 students enrolled at Veritas Academy. The majority of that student population hails from the Conestoga Valley, Ephrata, ELANCO, Manheim Township, Warwick and Hempfield school districts.

“Veritas is here to meet a need,” said Fischer. “It’s a need that I think all communities have. We want to form young men and women in the image of Christ. One of the greatest distinctions of our school is just the joyfulness. We want to produce students our community can be proud of. We want the joy in the building to flow into Leola and the greater Lancaster County community.”

Veritas Academy, which was formally established 30 years ago, employs 53 staff members, more than 40 of whom are teachers. The school receives funding from tuition, the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit program and community donations.

“We’re a younger school,” said Fischer. “From the beginning, we thought we were doing good work. Now, we have a good track record. Not only do we talk a good game, we have proof. What’s happened over time is that the mission and vision haven’t changed at all. God has actually grown us up.”

MobilePack Hopes to Reach New Goal

The need is immense; therefore, the goal is ambitious.

You can help fulfill the lofty objective.

The 11th Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) MobilePack will be held Friday, March 20, through Sunday, March 22, at Willow Street Mennonite Church, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street.

Packing shifts will be held Friday, March 20 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday, March 21, from 9 to 11 a.m., noon to 2 p.m., 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 22, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., and 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. “Some shift times are more popular than others and fill quickly,” said Lora Mangus Wenger, who is the FMSC Lancaster County MobilePack chairperson.

Every individual who signs up for a packing shift is asked to contribute a minimum of $63. “This covers the cost of one box of packed meals (216 meals), which is the average amount a single volunteer packs in a two-hour period,” Mangus Wenger said. “Basically, we encourage everyone to donate as they’re able. Whether a person can contribute 29 cents or $290, we welcome you to participate.”

Registrations will be taken starting Friday, Feb. 6, and will be accepted up until the day people participate. Go to https:// tinyurl.com/2vezzzj9 to sign up.

If it is your first time to register for a FMSC event, you will need to set up a username and password to register as an individual or for your group. Go to https://www.fmsc.org/# and click “Log In.” Once you set up an account, click on “Volunteer,” then reserve the number of spots you will need for your group.

“I would encourage everyone to try it at least once because I think they will be pleasantly surprised at the impact that it has on them to be able to volunteer, as well as the idea that the food that they are packing, the next

people who will touch it are those in need,” Mangus Wenger said. “You’re really making a very direct, positive contribution to someone’s life.”

FMSC accepts volunteers as young as 5 years old. “One of (FMSC’s) taglines is ‘all ages and all abilities,’” said Mangus Wenger. “We have opportunities for people who need to sit. We can find a job for pretty much anyone of any ability.”

For more information, email Mangus Wenger at lmw4fmsc@gmail.com

or call the church at 717-464-2422.

“The food through this organization is distributed around the world to those most in need,” said Mangus Wenger. “Feed My Starving Children, since 1987, has distributed more than 4 billion meals to more than 100 countries.”

Last year, the locally packaged food was sent to Malawi, the Dominican Republic, and Peru. “It is so important to me because, unfortunately, there’s an

is you have to enjoy it,” said Lauffer, who founded the Reading Archery Club (RAC) a decade ago. “You have to spend time on it, and to do that, you have to enjoy it. You have to be able to focus, and you have to be able to do the same things every time. A lot of it is muscle memory. Once (archers) start having success, it kind of snowballs. You have to get them on the right path, and they’ve got to buy in.”

RAC is a developmental, community-based archery program that provides life opportunities for youths ages 6 to 18 from Lancaster County and Berks County. RAC is headquartered on its 38-acre, wooded property at 880 Church Road, Reading.

“What I want (the archers) to understand is that it’s OK to try and it’s OK to fail,” said Lauffer. “For some kids, archery is easy. For other kids, they’ve got to really work at it. I want them to get out of it whatever they can. Those are the big life lessons that I want them to learn.”

RAC participates in and hosts as many as 20 regional, state and national archery competitions each year. The year is loosely broken down into three

store. It’s shopping with thrift-store prices. It’s very clean. It’s very organized. We always decorate the front windows. You can literally spend all day here it’s so big. You’ll see couples come in, and the woman is shopping downstairs, and the man will be upstairs sleeping in the furniture department.”

seasons by disciplinesindoor target, 3D and outdoor target.

RAC also conducts community events like fundraisers, and the organization awards scholarships to deserving student-athletes. There are costs involved with competing in archery.

“The mission is for students to learn safety during archery,” said Lauffer. “We want them to enjoy it and become a lifelong archer. We have about 10 passionate coaches who really enjoy working with young people, and they’re really dedicated. You need to have organization. For us, our best recruiters are the kids themselves. Providing a framework for competition is another big part of it.

Archers love to compete.”

“Every kid is different,” he added. “For some, you just let them do their things. Different students learn different ways.”

Currently, there are more than 45 student-athletes involved with the RAC program, including eight from the Garden Spot School District, as well as archers who reside in the Cocalico, Twin Valley, Boyertown, Governor Mifflin and Wilson school districts. For competition purposes, the students are broken

down by age groups: 8 and under, junior eagles; 9 to 11, eagles; 12 to 14, youths; and 15 to 18, young adults.

“They’re diverse. Some are second- and third-generation archers,” said Lauffer, who taught agriculture, advised FFA and coached track and field at Garden Spot High School for more than 30 years. “Some come from families who do archery hunting. They’re kids who love the challenge of putting an arrow where they want it time after time. That’s what they have in common.”

The student-athletes’ motivations for competing are as diverse as the archers themselves.

“You do not have to be a great athlete to be a great archer,” said Lauffer. “But we have had great athletes who have been great archers. We have kids who are involved with other sports. It’s something you can do for the rest of your life. I want it to be a positive experience for everyone out there. I had one young lady who did archery and never competed, but she had a great experience.”

Lauffer founded RAC with six Garden Spot Middle School students in 2016. The team grew quickly, with 20 participants in the

The Re-Uzit Shop consistently generates $2 million in sales annually, through about 400 transactions each day. Ninety percent of those profits goes to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) causes, and the other 10% benefits nonprofits like local ministries, police and fire and ambulance associations. As much as 99% of the thrift store’s merchandise is donated by local residents, churches, retailers and retirement communities. The Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland stations donation boxes

program’s second year and 30 archers in the third year.

“It’s important to take advantage of opportunities presented to you, but archery is not for everyone,” said Lauffer. “There might be somebody out there who’s thinking, ‘I’ve always thought about it, but I’ve never tried it.’ We want it to be accessible.”

people and people around the world,” said Clayton, a resident of Leola. “That’s really rewarding. It’s a winwin. Everybody who buys something is helping other people, and the person who buys it gets a good deal. People who volunteer here make friends. It does take a village, and that’s what we have here.”

The Re-Uzit Shop receives as many as 300,000 visits each year, mostly from locals, but also from people from surrounding communities and from all over Lancaster County and even tourists.

“It’s like a destination,” said Clayton. “We have members from a local plain community who come here regularly. I think a lot of people drive by a large building and don’t know what’s inside. I think if they came in, they’d be surprised by what’s inside.”

“We have a lot of customers who walk in the front door and it’s almost like an instant ‘wow’ on their faces,” said Duda, a resident of Ephrata. “I think we’re seeing a lot more of the younger generation who are interested in repurposing. We have large groups of women who just love to thrift shop, and they’ll hit all the thrift shops in the area.”

Established in 1976, the Re-Uzit Shop, which employs 10 full-time workers and 12 part-timers and benefits from the work of 150 volunteers, was originally located in New Holland’s downtown business district before moving to its current location in 2011. Locally, MCC also operates thrift stores in Ephrata, Mount Joy, Gap, Willow Street, Morgantown, Mechanicsburg and Belleville.

ongoing, huge need,” said Mangus Wenger. “It’s not that there’s not enough food in the world, but it’s not distributed in an even manner to everyone around the world, so there’s still a lot of people in the world who are malnourished or underfed.”

A pediatrician, Mangus Wenger is especially aware of the impact on the younger members of the world’s population. “Specifically, as far as children are concerned, it’s so vital that they get good nutrition during the first two to five years of their life, because that’s when their brain is developing a lot,” she said. “It has a very long-term effect if they don’t get adequate nutrition at a young age.”

Everyone who attends is also asked to bring a nonperishable food item that will be donated to the Lancaster Food Hub. “We also are concerned about local food insecurity,” said Mangus Wenger. “As a community, this is a great opportunity to help meet this need both locally and globally.”

Volunteers packed 400,000 meals last year. “Because the need is so great, this year we’re making a goal of packing 500,000 meals with the help of 2,000 volunteers from the community and raising $147,000 to cover the cost of the meals we are packing,” said Mangus Wenger. “Every person and penny is needed to help us reach our goal.”
