Giving Back To The Community LCFCA Seeks Volunteers With Recruitment Campaign By Chelsea Peifer
Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association (LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service.
The Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association launched a recruitment campaign this year in an effort to meet

Susquehanna Heritage, NPS Partner To Reach Students Susquehanna Heritage and the National Park Service (NPS) recently completed their third Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail (Chesapeake Trail) field trip season for local fourthgrade students. Each year, Susquehanna Heritage receives funding from the National Park Foundation’s Every Kid in a Park initiative in cooperation with the NPS to offer the program to schools at no charge. The field trip was initially developed by Jerry Schenck, a fourth-grade teacher from Wrightsville Elementary School who participated in the NPS See Junior Rangers pg 6
Wrightsville Elementary School students recently visited the Susquehanna Heritage Zimmerman Center for Heritage as part of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail field trip season. The students completed the National Park Service Junior Ranger Activity Book and were sworn in as Junior Rangers, bringing the program’s total to 1,015 students taking the Junior Ranger pledge.
“The Music Man” To Return To SSC By Chelsea Peifer
Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” was the very first show produced by the Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) in the summer of 2009. In honor of the theater company’s 10th season, it will be presenting the beloved musical once again. “It was a good show to start the company, and we’re repeating some of the famous things we did in the past,” noted director Jim Johnson. Eight cast members will repeat their roles from the first SSC production of “The Music Man,” including Mount Joy resident Sharon Boyer, who will portray Mrs. Paroo. “It was a lot easier to learn my lines. Remembering how I did it the last time is helping me now,” Sharon said. Playing Mrs. Paroo again is a welcome task for Sharon, who described her character as a fun and opinionated person. Mrs. Paroo’s daughter, Marian, will be played by Stacia Smith of Harrisburg. Marian, a librarian, is among the See “The Music Man” pg 3
