Yorkfest Will Celebrate The Arts Experience, Integrity, Excellence Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival will feature artwork by fine artists from across the country, along with hands-on activities, music, poetry, and food. The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25 and 26, in downtown York.

The Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 25 and 26, in downtown York. The festival, which will be held in and around the Colonial Complex and along the Rail Trail from Philadelphia to Princess streets, will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 25 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 26. All events are free and open to the public.
This year’s featured artist is Robert Oughton. His pen-and-ink drawing “Lite Aire” is being used in print advertisements, postcards, billboards, and festival merchandise. Additionally, 100 fine artists from across the country have been chosen to participate in the Yorkfest Festival Marketplace. A variety of activities will also be available during Yorkfest. York USA Dance Chapter 3008 will sponsor a ballroom dance social themed “Surf ’s Up� on Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Jewish Community Center, 2000 Hollywood Drive, York. The event will begin with a Night Club Two Step lesson by Keith Stremmel from 3 to 3:45 p.m., followed by opportunities to dance to a mix of ballroom, Latin, and swing music by disc jockey Ken Pandozzi. There will be a couples tango formation performance by a group from Hummelstown. The routine will incorporate Argentine and traditional tango with some paso doble. York USA Dance Chapter 3008 will host a ballroom dance social on Aug. 19 at the Jewish Community Center in York.
The York County Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) will hold its 10th annual Mini Golf Marathon from noon to midnight on Friday Aug. 17, at the Heritage Hills Mini Golf Course, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York. Separate golf fees have been set for adults and for children. Golfers may attend any time during the 12-hour period. Attendees may win door prizes, participate in contests on the course, and enjoy free pizza and snacks. Proceeds from the event will help to fund forensic interviewing and medical services for abused children who are referred to the York County CAC. In 2017, the York County CAC interviewed 770 children about child abuse and provided 131 forensic medical exams, an increase of 26 percent
over the prior year’s number of exams. This year, the CAC is on pace to serve 820 children. The mission of the York County CAC is to reduce the trauma of child abuse investigations, foster professional collaboration and cooperation, and promote education and advocacy regarding the prevention of child abuse within the community. Central to the CAC mission is a multidisciplinary model that includes the district attorney’s office; the Office of Children, Youth and Families; WellSpan Health; all law enforcement jurisdictions in York County; the Victim Assistance Center, a program of the YWCA; CASA; and guardians ad litem. Homeschooling Outside the Box, a free one-day conference organized by the York Home School Association, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road, York. The conference will feature three sessions where panels of homeschooling families from various backgrounds will share their nontraditional approaches to learning. The panelists will share their families’ experiences and answer questions about delight-directed or child-led learning, eclectic homeschooling, unschooling, and more, including what counts as educational and “What about college?� The day will begin with check-in, coffee, and a light breakfast at 8:30 a.m. The first session, “Getting Started,� will begin at 9 a.m. and will cover why homeschooling does not have to be similar to public school and how parents can pique their children’s interest in learning. The second session, “Recordkeeping and Evaluations,� set for 10:45 a.m., will focus on how nontraditional learning looks on paper and how it can be done in compliance with Pennsylvania’s recordkeeping requirements. Music Around the World will include a Musical Petting Zoo, instruction and materials to make Polynesian musical instruments, and a Community Music Composition Collaboration. At the Silken Literary Tent, local and regional artists will present page poetry, dramatic monologues, spoken word performances, storytelling, and more. Readings will take place in 15- to 20-minute segments, all day, both days; passersby are welcome to join in and perform. A spin art bicycle project will be available. Festival attendees are invited to create works of art while getting a little exercise by pedaling a stationary bike to activate a spinning platter while a partner squirts paint onto paper. The York County History Center will offer several attractions in and around the Colonial Complex, including its gift shop, tours of the Murals of York and the Colonial Courthouse, and talks and demonstrations. Admission to the Agricultural and Industrial Museum, Historical Society Museum, and Fire Museum will be free. The Historic Codorus Creek Boat Parade by the Stewards of the Lower Susquehanna will launch at 2 p.m. on Aug. 25 from Bantz Park. The City of York will hold a free community jazz concert on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. in the William Penn High School auditorium. Music will be provided by Extremity. Doors will open at 5 p.m. No tickets are required. Additionally, diverse food and beverage options will be available at several locations throughout the festival. Yorkfest organizers are also partnering with several other organizations that will host events downtown the same weekend. The Fringe Festival will feature live performing arts experiences from Wednesday, Aug. 22, to Aug. 26 in multiple locations, including within Yorkfest. The ninth annual Cigar Box Guitar Festival will take place on Aug. 25 at The York Emporium, 343 W. Market St. A Turtle Derby to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters will take place on Aug. 26 at the Market Street bridge. School Changes Name, Opens Enrollment The Christian School of York, 907 Greenbriar Road, York, has changed the name of its accredited preschool program to Christian School of York Preschool. Formerly called the Early Education Center, Christian School of York Preschool changed its name with the goal of more clearly communicating the biblically-based education provided to children ages 2 to 5. Additionally, Christian School of York Preschool will now operate on an open admission model, allowing more students from the York and greater York region to attend the school. One Book, One Community Voting Opens One Book, One Community (OBOC) organizers have announced that members of the public may vote for next year’s One Book, One Community book selection from Wednesday, Aug. 1, to Friday, Aug. 31. From a ballot of five books chosen by the book selection committee, participants may vote for the book they would be most interested in reading and discussing in 2019. collaboration among a total of 40 libraries in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and York counties. To vote, members of the public may visit www.oboc.org or fill out paper ballots by visiting a participating library. The initiative includes Cumberland County Library System, Dauphin County Library System, Perry County Libraries, York County Libraries, Hershey Public Library, and Middletown Public Library. The winner of the public vote will be announced in November. Members of the public will be invited to read the chosen book in January 2019, and programs at the public libraries will begin in February, which is designated as both Library Lovers’ Month and Book Lovers’ Month. Multiple copies of the winning title will be available at local public libraries beginning in January 2019.

Youths from the Lancaster Stake with wards in York and Lancaster counties pulled handcarts filled with their gear as they re-enacted the Mormon pioneer trek that took place in the 1800s from Nauvoo, Ill., to Salt Lake City, Utah. Among the participants were (back, from left) Staheli Palmer, Kylee Splattstoesser, Courtney Ohl, Maia Knudson, (front) Haley Smith, and Haley Mair. Beginning in the 1840s, more than 70,000 Latter-day Saints made the trip from Nauvoo, Ill., to Salt Lake City, Utah, utilizing handcarts and wagons. To re-enact these journeys by taking a 15-mile trek, a total of 93 youths from the York and Lancaster congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints convened at Camp Liahona in Caledonia, near Chambersburg, from June 28 to 30. The youths, between the ages of 14 and 18, were organized into nine families, each with an adult ma and an adult pa. They dressed in pioneer-style clothing. During their journey, they pushed and pulled handcarts filled with provisions and personal items. They slept under the stars at night, and they had to leave their cellphones behind. On June 29, after packing up the camp, the families hiked approximately 4 to 5 miles, stopping periodically to eat, rest, and set up camp. Their meals were pioneer

Her name is Lorraine Murungu. Her son, who is named Blessed, was born with cerebral palsy, and he is paraplegic and unable to speak. Murungu has learned to make rag dolls, a product that can be marketed heavily near the beginning of the school year in Zimbabwe, where Murungu lives. A loan from a HOPE International group has helped make her business possible. When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, landed in Zimbabwe with a team of 22 others in January, he was thinking about the difference HOPE International has made by teaching individuals in 15 countries about savings groups and microfinance. But as he watched Murungu and other women who have benefited from HOPE as they worshipped God, he found himself learning from them. “I heard them talk, praying for each other and supporting each other,� said Rutt, who was struck by the humility and gratitude he witnessed. “Before we left, Lorraine asked me, ‘What can we pray for, for you as you go back to Pennsylvania?’ That struck me as insightful and showed me so much depth of character and integrity,� said Rutt. HOPE International is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. The organization is currently planning its 18th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 14. Round one of the four-person scramble-format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a boxed breakfast and buffet lunch, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and a buffet dinner. According to HOPE special events coordinator Carley Bilindabagabo, the tournament can comfortably accommodate about 160 golfers per round. Special prizes will be given to golfers who are closest to the pin, make the longest drive, or

Her life is one of many touched by HOPE, but Rutt asks those who hear about her life to learn from Murungu. “I want to encourage us to get away from the idea that we have the answers and we are just here to help someone by sending them money,� he said. “I want us to look for ways we can learn from each other (because) we are on a journey together, and we should be praying for each other.� To make the journeys of HOPE clients more real to golfers who participate in the tournaments, organizers have devised an activity to engage golfers on the links. “We will have client images with their names and businesses stationed on the course,� said Bilindabagabo. “Each golfer will receive a card, and they fill in the card as they go through the course with the name of the business,� she explained. If the golfer completes the whole card correctly, he or she can be entered into a drawing for a prize. These dollars were raised in the 18th annual “Bringing Arts and Culture to Life� campaign that funds eight partner agencies and the Creative Impact Awards that bring arts, history, and culture to the people of York County. The funds they receive are unrestricted funds and are based on the scores of an all-volunteer review panel made up of contributors. Church Plans Celebration St. David’s Evangelical Congregational Church, 2411 Oakland Road, Dover, will hold an End of Summer Blast on Sunday, Aug. 19, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The event will include a bounce house, a dunk tank, picnic food, games and a concert by On the Way.
