“Shipwrecked, Rescued by Jesus� vacation Bible school (VBS) will be offered from Sunday, July 22, through Friday, July 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9 N. Main St., Dover. The VBS is free and open to the community. Children ages 3 to 12 are invited to attend. In addition, a new class for teenagers and a class for adults will be offered. The VBS will feature a variety of Bible-learning experiences, including science activities, games, songs, and treats. Through a program called Operation Kid-to-Kid, children will participate in a mission project that will provide seeds for families in Haiti to use to grow food. A Sail Away Sendoff will take place each day at 6 p.m. All activities will be hands-on, and children may get messy. Children should dress in play clothes and safe shoes. On Sunday, July 15, at 2 p.m., professor Peter B. Levy will present a program at Martin Library, 159 E. Market St., York. He will share about his book “The Great Uprising: Race Riots in Urban America in the 1960s� and the York County race riots of the 1960s. During the program, Levy will examine three uprisings - in Cambridge and Baltimore, Md., and in York - and discuss their impact. Levy is a professor of history at York College, where he has taught courses on recent American history, the Civil
Horse, Steam, And Gas Show Planned Menges Mills Historic Horse, Steam, and Gas Engine Association will host its 32nd annual Horse, Steam, and Gas Show on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 13, 14, and 15. This year’s event will feature a new location: the White Rose Motorcycle Club Hillclimb, 5252 Hillclimb Road, Spring Grove. Setup day will be July 13, with a show preview at noon. Show days will run from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on July 14 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 15. Admission is free; there is a nominal per-car fee for parking. This year’s spotlight brand is International Harvester. The event will feature a flea market, along with antique dealers and craft vendors. Children’s old-time games and both children’s and adults’ pedal tractor pulls will be offered, as well as a parade of equipment, gas engines, and farm and garden tractors on display. Additional displays and demonstrations will include a half-scale military equipment exhibit, antique cars, and blacksmithing, wood splitting, and saw milling. A stock garden tractor fun pull will be offered on July 15. Live music from Brushfire will entertain at 7 p.m. on July 13, and Paul Wagner and the Country Swingers will perform at 7 p.m. on July 14. A variety of food will be available for purchase, including a roast beef supper special beginning at 5 p.m. on July 13. Pets and alcoholic beverages are not permitted on the show grounds. Senior Center Posts Programs September House Senior Center, 1251 W. King St., York, has posted its schedule of activities. Ballroom Social Dance Planned York USA Dance Chapter 3008 will sponsor a ballroom social dance, themed “Celebrate Our Freedom,” on Sunday, July 15, at the Jewish Community Center, 2000 Hollywood Drive, York. Spring Grove Borough Council held a public meeting on May 7 to discuss the future of the community building located at 50 N. East St. Roughly 60 individuals were in attendance. Participants voiced their concerns while providing discussion regarding the borough’s ongoing maintenance and growing concerns regarding the property. After reviewing the input, the borough council decided to execute a proposal from CORE Design to conduct a feasibility study of the building. The study will provide an analysis of the existing building by assessing the structural condition, utility and mechanical systems, and Americans with Disabilities Act compliance. The study will also include a market-use analysis and exploration of options for future use.

The borough council hopes the information will allow it to better understand and address the condition of the structure while comprehending the financial impacts involved, both seen and unforeseen, and attempting to best preserve a community resource. The findings of the feasibility study will be made public after the study’s completion, and the borough council will seek more input from residents at that time. The leases of current organizations and tenants occupying the building will be renewed for 2019. The renewal of leases was an important concern highlighted at the public meeting.

York Habitat for Humanity recently partnered with employee volunteers from Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania to construct a new, single-family home in Dover Borough. The employees are among more than 800 volunteers helping to complete the construction of the home. In addition to volunteering, the business donated $1,000 to aid in the nonprofit’s mission to help families build and improve their homes. York Habitat for Humanity utilizes volunteer labor, donated land, and in-kind materials, to build homes. Annual Bass Classic Slated The 15th annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Bass Classic will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, at Shikellamy State Park in Sunbury. One hundred two-man teams are expected to compete, making it one of the largest charity bass tournaments in the Northeast United States. First place is $3,000, with the top 10 teams receiving cash. Every other team will receive prizes. The tournament will start with a blast off from the park at 6 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m. with a weigh in at the point of the park where the north and west branch of the Susquehanna River connect. YoCo Bloom Micro-Grant Available The York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) announced the launch of YoCo Bloom. YoCo Bloom is a new microgrant program available to YCEA members with initiatives benefiting the York County community. Schmittle is a graduate of Shippensburg University with a Master of Education as a reading specialist and spent 12 years educating in schools.
