DWOT Donates To ACCESS York The Dover Women of Today (DWOT) made an annual donation of $300 to ACCESS York in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. The Dover Women of Today is an organization that focuses on helping communities and enhancing the lives of its members and their families. Members are from the Dover area, which includes York, East Berlin, Thomasville and other outlying towns. Those interested in exploring membership are invited to the club’s monthly meetings held at 7 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Dover Women of Today Building, located at 84 Reservoir Drive North, Dover. OBOC Campaign Kicks Off Representatives from libraries have announced the selection of “Heartland� by Sarah Smarsh as the 2020 One Book, One Community (OBOC): Our Region Reads! selection. Throughout August, members of the public were invited to view a narroweddown list of books and vote for one they were interested in reading and discussing with other community members. The five titles on this year’s voting ballot were “Long Way Down� by Jason Reynolds, “Dread Nation� by Justina Ireland, “Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth� by Sarah Smarsh, “Poet X� by Elizabeth Acevedo, and “ VOX� by Christina Dalcher. These options were chosen by the Book Selection Committee. Each of the five choices was deemed by the Book Selection Committee to be a good, discussable book, featuring welldeveloped characters who are challenged by issues in their lives with which readers See OBOC pg 2

Literacy Council Honors Volunteer YMCA LIVESTRONG Program

Licensed Practical Nurse Full-time position ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Sign-on bonus for LPNs who apply prior to 1/15/20 $250 upon completion of 3 months of employment $500 upon completion of 6 months of employment.

The York County Literacy Council (YCLC) presented its Bea Blatner Volunteer of the Year Award to Annette Roderick in recognition of her years of service. Roderick joined York County Literacy Council in 2012. Since then, Roderick has volunteered more than 2,415 hours. She has tutored 21 students, four of whom received their high school equivalency diploma. Roderick served as a classroom aide for YCLC’s math classes and volunteered for its Buck A Book and bingo events.

The Bea Blatner Volunteer of the Year Award was established in 2002 in memory of longtime YCLC volunteer Bea Blatner, who supported YCLC’s mission by serving as a tutor, committee member, library volunteer, donor, and board member. For near 20 years, Blatner gave her time, enthusiasm, and expertise, continuing to tutor when she was in her 90s. Offers Support To Cancer Survivors The YMCA of York and York County is offering the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, an evidence-based program that is intended to help cancer survivors and patients regain their physical and mental strength. The free 12-week program supports cancer survivors in regaining their physical, emotional and spiritual strength. Currently, this program is offered at the Bob Hoffman Dover Branch, Eastern Branch, Southern Branch, and York Branch locations. The health and wellness exercise program is conducted in a small group environment that includes individualized attention for each participant. Adult survivors are eligible to join the program during all stages of recovery. The program also serves and embraces the families and caregivers who have been affected by the disease through a free family membership throughout the course of the program.

Upcoming program dates are as follows: York Branch YMCA, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 6 to March 23; Dover Branch YMCA, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays from Jan. 6 to 23; Eastern Branch YMCA, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays from Jan. 6 to March 23; and Southern Branch YMCA, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. or 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Feb. 18 to May 7.

The LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program is intended to help cancer survivors like Bill M. regain their physical, emotional and spiritual strength. The YMCA will offer the program at several branches beginning in January 2020.
