St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 121 N. Spring St., Middletown, will host a community health fair on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to noon. The event will feature health information and resources, on-site registration for free upcoming children’s and family programs, food, games, and prizes. Patel, Sessa Receive Recognition Middletown Area High School has honored seniors Aayushi Patel and Aiden Sessa as the Students of the Month for October. They were selected by their teachers. Aayushi is the daughter of Piyushkumar and Dimpleben Patel. She has been listed on the distinguished

This year’s Mid-Penn Capital Division title does not come with the pristine 10-0 mark the previous two have but the Blue Raider football team will gladly hang the banner in the gymnasium rafters none the less. Middletown wrapped up their third straight Capital Division crown with a 42-6 pasting of Palmyra last Friday using their standard formula of a punishing ground game and stingy defense. That combination
allowed Middletown to hold a 486 to 129 advantage in total yards while building a 42-0 lead before intermission. Jose Lopez and Richie Sykes held their typical position at the forefront of Middletown’s attack, combining for 316 yards and all five of the Blue Raiders’ offensive touchdowns. Lopez led the way with 156 yards and two scores on the ground, adding 19 yards and another score through the air. All three of those scores came as part of Middletown’s 28-point first
quarter explosion. All that action started with a 53-yard jaunt just 33 seconds after the opening whistle. Lopez added a 50-yard scamper late in the frame to finish his scoring on the ground. Lopez’s eight-yard TD reception, the lone TD pass for quarterback Scott Ash, came near the sixminute mark of the first and made it a 21-0 game. Chris Joseph provided the remaining first quarter score, returning an interception 27-yards to give Middletown a 14-0 lead a mere 1:24 into the game.
Sykes took over in the second quarter, turning Middletown’s Lopez fueled 28-0 lead into a mercy rule inducing 42-0 cushion at halftime thanks to back-to-back touchdown runs. Scores of 11-yards and 15-yards capped Sykes’ 122-yard game and made the Blue Raiders’ third Capital Division title a mere formality. The Cougars did break up Middletown’s shutout bid with a 43-yard Stephen Lyons to Sean Carter touchdown pass early in the third quarter. Up next for the 9-1 Blue Raiders is a District 3-3A semifinal match

Fall Prescribed Burns Scheduled The fall prescribed burn season has begun at Fort Indiantown Gap in Annville. The burns, intended to reduce the risk of wildfires, will be conducted on approximately 4,000 acres, as conditions permit, through Wednesday, Nov. 21, between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. Local residents may notice smoke originating from or in the vicinity of the installation while burns are being conducted. A prescribed burn is a commonly used forestry management technique that reduces the amount of combustible material naturally existing in the wilderness. It is performed only when conditions such as humidity, wind, and temperature are ideal for managing fires. Prescribed burns are not conducted unless all required conditions are met. Fort Indiantown Gap, headquarters to the DMVA and Pennsylvania National Guard, offers more than 17,000 acres and 140 training areas and facilities for year-round training. It balances one of the region’s most ecologically diverse areas with a military mission that annually supports 19,000 Pennsylvania National Guard personnel and more than
130,000 other states’ Guard, military, law enforcement, and civilian personnel each year. It is the only live-fire, maneuver military training facility in Pennsylvania and is the busiest Army National Guard training center in the nation. CROSS COUNTRY The cross country team wrapped up their 2018 season last Saturday with a trip to Big Spring High School for the District 3 Championship Meet. Jalen Rowley led the way for the boys’ team, finishing 143rd with a time of 20:12.5. Five places and a little over eight seconds later William Brown crossed the finish line while Tanner Albright claimed 152nd place with a time of 20:25.8. Zach Malay and Ken Britcher finished the 3.1-mile race eight seconds apart but Malay’s 22:07.0 had him in 185th place while Britcher ‘s 22:15.0 was the 186th fastest time. Angela Hernandez was the lone Lady Raider to compete, finishing 137th with a time of 25:51.4.

The Team Meghan Community Yard Sale was held on Sept. 29 at the Brownstone Lodge on Route 322 in Hershey. It featured local vendors, the Derry Township Police Department’s K9 Unit, the Brownstone Lodge, and local residents selling items. All proceeds from the Team Meghan Community Yard Sale were slated to go to the Meghan M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund and glioblastoma cancer research at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh. A 2017 graduate of Lower Dauphin High School in Hummelstown, Meghan passed away on Nov. 21, 2017, after a long battle with Stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. She was five days shy of her 19th birthday. The scholarship fund was created to support students pursuing a higher education in the arts, as well as to promote brain cancer

Both veterans and partners in PTSD research reported significantly higher emotional stress, as well as problems with frequent and intense emotional conflict.” However, the seminar is not only for veterans and their families, as Reidenbach emphasized that PTSD is not limited to veterans. Additionally, people do not need to be members of the American Legion to attend. “We chose the date for this one because we wanted to help people before the holidays,” noted auxiliary president Jessica Klepping. The Elizabethtown American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 329 has approximately 475 members. Meetings take place at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Individuals interested in becoming a member must fill out an application and have a spouse or family member who is a member of the American Legion.

a mobile app that provides users with personalized recommendations for opioid addiction treatment. The winners were selected from 28 projects developed by teams of participants from across the state. More than 350 technology professionals, addiction and recovery experts, college students, state officials and others took part in this year’s Code4PA, which kicked off on Sept. 20 in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The teams returned on Oct. 20 to demonstrate their projects for judging. The app, called Care4PA, suggests services and treatment providers based on information provided by the user such as his or her location and insurance provider. Users can also view other patients’ ratings of providers. Over time, the app will use this feedback to refine and improve recommendations. The app also provides state officials with insight into provider performance and utilization. Participants used opioid data from the state open data portal and other sources, as well as mobile, GIS and other technologies to develop app prototypes, data visualizations and other tools focused on prevention, rescue and recovery. The winning team is made up

On Wednesday, Nov. 7, the Elizabethtown American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 329 will host a seminar for the community on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Anyone is welcome to attend the free event, which will begin at 6 p.m. in the back room at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The seminar will be presented by Dolores Reidenbach, a Christian counselor and the founder and director of Jewel David Ministries in Elizabethtown. Jewel David Ministries is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that started in 2010 and offers counseling services to women, men, couples, families, children, and adolescents. Reidenbach’s message will focus on loving and living with someone with PTSD. “ When someone you care about suffers from PTSD, it can leave you feeling overwhelmed and frustrated or even (struggling) with anger about what’s happening to your family and relationship, or hurt by your loved one’s distance and moodiness,” said Reidenbach. “The program is designed to offer an opportunity to come

“Climb For Life” Planned
Vietnam Round Table To Meet
The 40th annual Climb for Life will take place on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. at Roundtop Mountain Resort, 925 Roundtop Road, Lewisberry. Ironman Steve Jones has climbed up Roundtop Mountain in Lewisberry to raise donations for local charities for 39 years. This year, Jones will make his 40th and final trek up the mountain while carrying up to 500 pounds on his back. Jones, of Camp Hill, will begin his ascent with 250 pounds on his barbell. As he makes his way up the mountain, volunteer spotters will add more weight, maxing out at 500 pounds near the top. Jones began training specifically for the event in April. He has raised thousands of dollars over the years to benefit local charities. Proceeds from this year’s event

On Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m., Masonic Village will host a Veterans Day program in the Freemasons Cultural Center’s Brossman Ballroom. A musical prelude will begin at 1:30 p.m. The event will honor all U.S. military service personnel present and past, especially Korean War veterans. Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) cadets from Cedar Cliff and Red Land
from York College, and in 1987, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps. He is a graduate of the Combined Logistics Officer Advanced Course, the Logistics Executive Development Course, the Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. Christmas Collection To Move The National Christmas Center Collection has been purchased in its entirety and will remain in Lancaster County. The collection will be categorically packed up and transported to Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown, presently home of Ironstone Ranch and The Star Barn Village and soon to be home to Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge, also known as the Kissing Bridge. The Massing of the Colors, a memorial to each military service member who has died in combat since 9/11, will be on display from Saturday, Nov. 3, to Monday, Nov. 12, in the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown’s Veterans Grove. Members of the public are invited to walk through and view the flag display at their leisure. The display will be lit for nighttime viewing. The Masonic Village at Elizabethtown is located at 1 Masonic Drive. The National Sojourners Harrisburg Chapter 76 created the Massing of the Colors memorial in 2004 and has displayed the flags at Masonic Village since

Neighborhood Hi, everyone! Holy moly, it is November already (well, almost, if you are reading this on Wednesday). I hope the months of November and December go nice and slow ‌ I love the holidays, in case you forgot. (Wink!) Strange Old Lady Please be careful. This person has found her way into my house and could also get into yours! A very weird thing has happened. A strange old lady has moved into my house. I have no idea who she is, where she came from, or how she got in. I certainly did not invite her. All I know is that one day she wasn’t there, and the next day she was. She is a clever old lady and manages to keep out of sight for the most part, but whenever I pass a mirror I catch a glimpse of her. And whenever I look in the mirror to check my appearance, there she is hogging the whole thing, completely obliterating my gorgeous face and body. This is very rude! I have tried screaming at her, but she just screams back. The least she could do is offer to pay part of the rent, but no. Every once in a while, I find a dollar bill stuck in a coat pocket or some loose change under a sofa cushion, but it is not nearly enough. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but I think she is stealing money from me. I go to the ATM and withdraw $100, and a few days later, it’s all gone! I certainly don’t spend money THAT fast, so I can only conclude the old lady is pilfering from me. You’d think she would spend some of that money to buy wrinkle cream. And money isn’t the only thing I think she is stealing. Food seems to disappear at an alarming rate - especially the good stuff like ice cream, cookies and candy. She must have a real sweet tooth, but she’d better watch it, because she is really packing on the pounds. I suspect she realizes this, and to make herself feel better, she is tampering with my scale to make me think I am putting on weight too. For an old lady, she is quite childish. She likes to play nasty games, like going into my closets when I’m not home and altering my clothes so they don’t fit. And she messes with files and papers, so I can’t find anything. This is particularly annoying since I am extremely neat and organized. She has found other imaginative ways to annoy me. She gets into my mail, newspapers and magazines before I do and blurs the print, so I can’t read it. And she has done something really sinister to the volume controls on my TV, radio and telephone. Now, all I hear are
mumbles and whispers. She has done other things - like make my stairs steeper, my vacuum heavier and all the knobs and faucets harder to turn. She even made my bed higher so that getting into and out of it is a real challenge. Lately, she has been fooling with my groceries before I put them away, applying glue to the lids, making it almost impossible for me to open the jars. She has taken the fun out of shopping for clothes. When I try something on, she stands in front of the dressing room mirror and monopolizes it. She looks totally ridiculous in some of those outfits, plus she keeps me from seeing how great they look on me. Just when I thought she couldn’t get any meaner, she proved me wrong. She came along when I went to get my picture taken for my driver’s license and just as the camera shutter clicked, she jumped in front of me. I hope she never finds out where you live. 2 teaspoons salt, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper, divided 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper 4 3/4 cups milk, divided 2 large eggs 3 1/2 cups peanut oil Garnish: chopped fresh parsley Directions: 1. Sprinkle salt and pepper evenly over steaks. Set aside. 2. Combine cracker crumbs, 1 cup flour, baking powder, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and red pepper. 3. Whisk together 3/4 cup milk and eggs. Dredge steaks in cracker crumb mixture; dip in milk mixture, and dredge in cracker mixture again. 4. Pour oil into a 12-inch skillet; heat to 360 degrees. (Do not use a nonstick skillet.) Fry steaks 10 minutes. Turn and fry 4 to 5 more minutes or until golden brown. Remove to a wire rack in a baking pan. Keep steaks warm in a 225 degrees oven. Carefully drain hot oil, reserving cooked bits and 1 tablespoon drippings in skillet. 5. Whisk together remaining 1/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon black pepper, and 4 cups milk. Pour mixture into reserved drippings in skillet; cook over medium-high heat, whisking constantly, 10 to 12 minutes or until thickened. Serve gravy with steaks and mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with parsley, if desired. Tip of the Week Wrap a rubber band around a shampoo bottle and you will be able to tell the shampoo bottle from the conditioner bottle even if your eyes are covered with suds! The Pennsylvania Chautauqua in Mount Gretna, recently acquired more than 18 acres of the historic privately held Soldiers Field. The purchase was completed primarily with funds that were donated to the community capital campaign. Saving Soldiers Field Committee co-chairs John Feather and Mike Sherman announced that the committee raised more than $850,000 in pledges to be paid over three years toward a nearly $1 million purchase price. Nearly all of the more than $680,033 in first-year pledges has been received by the committee. The unified effort has resulted in pledges which have come from
all sections of the Mount Gretna community as well as from around the country. Seventy percent of funds have come from individual and local businesses, with the rest being committed by the Pennsylvania Chautauqua board of managers and Pennsylvania Chautauqua Foundation. In July, Pennsylvania Chautauqua stockholders voted to approve the purchase of the land to benefit the Mount Gretna community. The purchase will benefit the community by preserving and enhancing the historical features of this portion of Soldiers Field; providing recreational opportunities such as

Food Safety Program Set Starting in 2020, the designated person in charge at a food service establishment must be a certified food protection manager. In anticipation of this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the ServSafe Food Safety program, an in-person training to help participants with certification and to improve food safety practices. PFSA Launches New Program In response to the opioid and heroin epidemic, Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance (PFSA) has announced a new pilot program to strengthen parenting skills for persons recovering from substance use disorder (SUD). Helping parents learn healthy coping and parenting skills while balancing the needs of their recovery is the goal of the program, which is slated to launch in November at select family centers across the state. PFSA developed the curriculum and first piloted it successfully last fall at Hamilton Health Center in Harrisburg. The person-first curriculum draws on the latest research in addiction recovery and best practices in parenting, and it is inclusive of the 12 Step principles of recovery. Topics covered in the seven sessions of the program will include Identifying Parent and Family Strengths and Needs, Understanding How Principles of Recovery Can Be Applied to the Parenting Experience, Learning and Navigating the Change Process as a Parent and Within the Family, Understanding How Family History Influences Parenting and Communication Style, Developing an Understanding of Discipline and Development, Identifying and Practicing Healthy Coping Skills, Managing Visits and Effective Communication With Caregivers, and Developing a Plan for Individual Self-Care and Family Wellness as Part of the Recovery Experience. The family service and support providers participating in the pilot include Coatesville Family Center in Chester County
and Perry County Family Center. The sites selected for the statewide pilot expansion are designated as Centers of Excellence in Pennsylvania - medical providers and systems that bring a wholeperson approach to helping Pennsylvanians recover from SUD. A grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services enables PFSA to offer the program. PFSA and the Office of Child Development and Early Learning will host an interactive
facilitator training session from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, and Friday, Nov. 2, at PaTTAN, 6340 Flank Drive, Harrisburg. All identified Families in Recovery program facilitators are required to attend the training prior to receiving any program-related materials and in order to move forward with program implementation at affiliated Family Centers. Habitat Posts Board Update Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area named Chad Nagle as president of the board of directors. Doug Anderson was re-elected as vice president. Jesse Biretz was elected as treasurer, and Shannon Deatrich was re-elected as secretary. In addition, several community professionals have been appointed to serve on the board of directors for a three-year term with the option for a second three-year term. The speaker will be Alan Shapiro, a C-47 pilot. The previously scheduled speaker is not available due to illness. Shapiro flew a variety of military aircraft, including the P40 Warhawk fighter, Waco CG4A glider, and C-47 Skytrain transport. He was only 19 years old when he completed his first mission as pilot of a C-47. By the end of 1944, Shapiro was flying supplies such as gas and ammunition, including howitzers, to Patton’s units. Shapiro and his crew also delivered supplies to ground troops during the Battle of the Bulge. Shapiro estimates that he
logged approximately 3,500 hours of flight time. After college, he worked at an advertising agency and eventually started his own agency, which he has directed for 60 years. The Central Pennsylvania WWII Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for WWII veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war. Theater Group To Stage “Pericles” Gamut Theatre Group’s Harrisburg Shakespeare Company will open its 26th season with William Shakespeare’s “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Gamut Theatre in downtown Harrisburg. “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” is directed by Gamut Theatre’s associate artistic director, Thomas Weaver. The production will be staged in the 220-seat Select Medical Mainstage at Gamut Theatre, located at 15 N. Fourth St., Harrisburg. The box office will open at 6:30 p.m., and the performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Following the opening night performance, a reception will be held where guests can meet
the director, cast, and crew in Gamut’s Capital Blue Lobby while enjoying food and complimentary beverages. “Pericles, Prince of Tyre” will continue through Sunday, Nov. 25, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. and on Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available for a fee, with seniors, military members, and students receiving discounts. Free Wellness Screenings Set Geisinger Holy Spirit, 503 N. 21st St., Camp Hill, will offer free health screenings in its auditorium on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon. Screenings will include blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), cholesterol and non-fasting glucose, bone density heel scans, and heart disease risk assessment. Female patients ages 65 to 75 with no prior history of cancer can
also enroll in the DETECT cancer research study. DETECT is a partnership between Geisinger and Johns Hopkins University to determine if cancer can be detected early through a blood test.
