The team members of Brittany’s Hope are thrilled to have an honored guest who has traveled all the way from Texas to train for and attend the 14th annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. Dolly, one of the newest miniature ponies to reside in the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo at the Star Barn Village at Stone Gables Estate, has already begun training with caretaker and international award-winning trainer Carl O’Callaghan. Dolly, a miniature pony that resides in the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo at Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown, is currently working with international award-winning trainer Carl O’Callaghan to train for the Walk of Love on Sept. 15. The 14th annual cross-country 5K and fun walk will benefit Brittany’s Hope.
Her name is Lorraine Murungu. Her son, who is named Blessed, was born with cerebral palsy, and he is paraplegic and unable to speak. Murungu has learned to make rag dolls, a product that can be marketed heavily near the beginning of the school year in Zimbabwe, where Murungu lives. A loan from a HOPE International group has helped make her business possible. See HOPE International pg 2

humility and gratitude he witnessed. “Before we left, Lorraine asked me, ‘What can we pray for, for you as you go back to Pennsylvania?’ That struck me as insightful and showed me so much depth of character and integrity,� said Rutt. HOPE International is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. The organization is currently planning its 18th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 14. Round one of the fourperson scramble-format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a boxed breakfast and buffet lunch, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and a buffet dinner. According to HOPE special events coordinator Carley Bilindabagabo, the tournament can comfortably accommodate about 160 golfers per round. Special prizes will be given to golfers who are closest to the pin, make the longest drive, or shoot a hole-in-one. Through working with her savings group, called “Kuwirirana,� which loosely translates to “getting along,� Murungu was able to purchase a sewing machine she can use
to make rag dolls. Her life is one of many touched by HOPE, but Rutt asks those who hear about her life to learn from Murungu. “I want to encourage us to get away from the idea that we have the answers and we are just here to help someone by sending them money,� he said. “I want us to look for ways we can learn from each other (because) we are on a journey together, and we should be praying for each other.� To make the journeys of HOPE clients more real to golfers who participate in the tournaments, organizers have devised an activity to engage golfers on the links. “We will have client images with their names and businesses stationed on the course,� said Bilindabagabo. “Each golfer will receive a card, and they fill in the card as they go through the course with the name of the business,� she explained. If the golfer completes the whole card correctly, he or she can be entered into a drawing for a prize. Bilindabagabo noted that much of the $350,000 HOPE would like to raise from the tournament will be donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of sponsorship levels are available to businesses. Packages start with two golfers and recognition during the awards meal and range to include a HOPE trip to the Dominican Republic and golfing and a meal for 12 participants. One Book, One Community (OBOC) organizers have announced that members of the public may vote for next year’s One Book, One Community book selection from Wednesday, Aug. 1, to Friday, Aug. 31. From a ballot of five books chosen by the book selection committee, participants may vote for the book they would be most interested in reading and discussing in 2019. The selections are “Ordinary Grace� by William Kent Krueger, “Ginny Moon� by Benjamin Ludwig, “A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea� by Melissa Fleming, “Killers of the Flower Moon� by David Grann, and “The Hate U Give� by Angie Thomas. It is not necessary to read or have read the books to place a vote. The public vote initiative is a way to promote community involvement in the selection of the title. The 2019 OBOC regional campaign represents collaboration among a total of 40 libraries in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and York counties. To vote, members of the public may visit www.oboc.org or fill out paper ballots by visiting a participating library. The initiative includes Cumberland County Library System, Dauphin County Library System, Perry County Libraries, York County Libraries, Hershey Public Library, and Middletown Public Library. The winner of the public vote will be announced in November. Members of the public will be invited to read the chosen book in January 2019, and programs at the public libraries will begin in February, which is designated as both Library Lovers’ Month and Book Lovers’ Month. Multiple copies of the winning title will be available at local public libraries beginning in January 2019.

The sixth annual Wags on Wright, a fundraiser for York County SPCA and an adoption event, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the John Wright Restaurant, 34 N. Front St., Wrightsville. The event will include vendors and exhibits, as well as food on the Pizza Patio, where dogs will be allowed to join their owners. Dogs must be on leashes. The SPCA will bring dogs that are available to be adopted. In the case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday, Sept. 23. Proceeds will benefit the York County SPCA. Trail from pg 1 The Mason-Dixon Trail System (M-DTS) relocated a 2.7-mile section north of Wrightsville off the roads onto the land that was the former Marietta Gravity Water Company property. The Lancaster County Conservancy is in the process of purchasing the property and plans to rename it the Hellam Hills Preserve. The initial relocation was constructed by the joint M-DTS/York Hiking Club (YHC) Thursday work crew and is now blazed and open to foot traffic. The relocation goes into the woods near the junction of River Drive and Furnace Road. It emerges onto River Drive near Dugan Run. Along the trail, people may see Grubs Bank iron mine, established in 1866, as well as a gas pipeline, an old dam that became clogged with silt, and the pumping station for the Columbia Water Company. The old route followed River Drive. In the future, a planned relocation will route the trail down to the old dam site on Wildcat Run and a backpackers’ shelter at the old dam site. The fourth annual Veterans on the Susquehanna event will take place at Shank’s Mare Outfitters, 2092 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 7:30 p.m. To honor veterans and celebrate the value of clean waterways in the community, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and Heroes on the Water will host a day of fishing, paddling, and flyfishing lessons on the Susquehanna River. Veterans, community members, paddlers, fishermen, friends, and family are welcome.

The area will be located in the Gates and Plough Tavern Courtyard. ChalkWalk will feature colorful chalk murals being created along Market Street between Pershing and Beaver streets on Aug. 25. Multiple performance areas will offer live music and entertainment throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday. Music Around the World will include a Musical Petting Zoo, instruction and materials to make Polynesian musical instruments, and a
Community Music Composition Collaboration. At the Silken Literary Tent, local and regional artists will present page poetry, dramatic monologues, spoken word performances, storytelling, and more. Readings will take place in 15- to 20-minute segments, all day, both days; passersby are welcome to join in and perform. A spin art bicycle project will be available. Festival attendees are invited to create works of art while getting a little exercise by pedaling a stationary bike to activate a spinning platter while a partner squirts paint onto paper. The City of York will hold a free community jazz concert on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. in the William Penn High School auditorium. Music will be provided by Extremity. Scholarship News Posted The York County Conservation District (YCCD) will offer two $1,000 college scholarships to York County students majoring in a field of study focusing on agriculture, environmental science, natural history, natural resource management, or related science fields. To be eligible, students must be a York County resident; attend
or will attend an accredited college or university; majoring or will be majoring in agricultural, conservation, environmental, natural resource management, or related science field; currently enrolled in a college or university or have been accepted for the school calendar for fall 2018 or spring 2019; and did not receive the YCCD scholarship last year. Horn Farm Center Receives Grant Riparian, or streamside, plant buffers are an effective way of reducing soil erosion and runoff of sediment, nutrients, and other potential pollutants. Agricultural runoff is largely responsible for much of the pollution in regional waterways. To address this issue, the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, York, designed a riparian corridor restoration project. The Horn Farm was recently awarded more than $24,000 towards the implementation of this design through Stream ReLeaf, a program jointly organized by Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. This project will have numerous economic, educational, and ecological benefits for the community. Horn Farm Center will be able to demonstrate various productive uses of a multi-functional buffer. The stream corridor itself will be cleared of invasives and planted with natives, including black walnut, sycamore, and red maple. The funds will help Horn Farm Center establish an orchard of pawpaw and persimmon alongside rows of mixed berry varieties for fruit production. Silvopastures, which combine trees with grassy areas for grazing animals will be planted. Plants in the silvopastures will be selected to boost honey production for local beekeepers. A section of mixed species for woody floral production will supply the burgeoning local floral market. The awarded funds will also contribute greatly to The Horn Farm Center’s education offer-
ings. The Center currently offers a variety of programs, including educational workshops, educational internships, and on-site support in the form of an incubator farm. The multi-functional riparian buffer will allow for the expansion of the farm’s educational offerings, with newly created spaces for research and teaching about agroforestry and perennial farming. As a leader in regenerative agriculture, The Horn Farm Center focuses on land management practices that not only do no harm, but actively seek to revitalize the soil and surrounding environment. Buffer plantings are proven to reduce sediment and runoff from farming. Buffers also improve water infiltration which will help keep valuable water on the farm. With funding from the Stream ReLeaf Program, the center will be able to reintroduce more than 35 species of native plants to 6.1 acres of degraded streamside woodland ecosystem. In addition to improving ecological health on the farm, this project will positively affect the health of waterways downstream, namely Kreutz Creek, the Susquehanna River, and, eventually, the Chesapeake Bay. A total of 2077 trees and shrubs are scheduled for planting this fall and in the spring of 2019. The Horn Farm Center is seeking additional funds and volunteers for this ongoing ecological stewardship project. We’re very fortunate because we’re here, so we can do the course a few times before the event,” O’Callaghan said. Brittany’s Hope is an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit organization committed to aiding orphans in crisis and helping special needs children to be adopted into forever families. Brittany’s Hope provides grants to families that are in the process of adopting and has implemented programs in Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Kenya that provide holistic care directly to orphans. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, said that the organization has set a fundraising goal of $65,000 for this year’s event. Sahd said the new residence will provide safe, modern, clean living space and bedrooms and feature adaptive furniture and bathrooms to enable the children to gain independence. A physical therapy room and common area for the children are also planned, and the residence will be staffed by trained professionals who can provide 24/7 medical care and help the youths to develop basic living skills. In the morning on June 30, they packed their burdens onto the handcarts to take a final 3-mile trek to their starting point. On July 24, Latter-day Saints celebrated Pioneer Day as a reminder of the hardships endured by the pioneers on their trek. Pioneer Day commemorates that day in 1847 when Brigham Young and the first wave of Saints arrived in Salt Lake City. The trek occurs every four years.

Beginning in the 1840s, more than 70,000 Latter-day Saints made the trip from Nauvoo, Ill., to Salt Lake City, Utah, utilizing handcarts and wagons. To re-enact these journeys by taking a 15mile trek, a total of 93 youths from the York and Lancaster congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints convened at Camp Liahona in Caledonia, near Chambersburg, from June 28 to 30. The youths, between the ages of 14 and 18, were organized into nine families, each with an adult ma and an adult pa. They dressed in pioneer-style clothing. During their journey, they pushed and pulled handcarts filled with provisions and personal items. They slept under the stars at night, and they had to leave their cellphones behind. On June 29, after packing up the camp, the families hiked approximately 4 to 5 miles, stopping periodically to eat, rest, and set up camp. Their meals were pioneer recipes cooked in Dutch ovens. In the afternoon, the youths participated in activities similar to ones the pioneers would have enjoyed, such as stick pull, stick ball, hoop toss, three-legged races, horseshoes, trap ball, hoop roll races, a ring toss, a cornhole toss, a tomahawk throw, sack races, and more, including a square dance with a country band. They also learned skills, such as black powder rifle shooting, candle making, and butter making, and they held testimonial meetings.
