Congregation Plans Anniversary Celebration By Chelsea Peifer
The congregation of Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2100 Fishing Creek Road, Wrightsville, will host a 150th anniversary celebration on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29. The public is invited to attend the event, which will commemorate and look back on the history of the building since it was constructed in 1868. According to pastor Mark Fillmore, the building originally housed the congregation of the Ebenezer Evangelical United Brethren Church for 100 years. The structure was remodeled in 1904, and the basement was dug out in the 1960s, with bathrooms and Sunday school rooms being added to the newly finished basement layout as well. National Korean War Veterans Day will take place on Friday, July 27. The event will take place on the anniversary of the July 27, 1953, armistice signed by North Korea, China, the United States and the United Nations, suspending all hostilities. In honor of the Americans who served during that time, and especially those who died, the President has proclaimed July 27 as National Korean War Veterans Day. He encouraged Americans to observe the day with ceremonies and activities honoring all Korean War veterans.

Additionally, the bell tower, which Mark said was closed 30 years ago, will be opened up again for the church bells to be rung in honor of the anniversary celebration on July 29. Special Needs Program Posted The seventh annual theater event exclusively for children with special needs and their families will be held from 5 to 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31. The live 60-minute show will start at 6:15 p.m. at The Grace Milliman Pollock Performing Arts Center, 340 N. 21st St., Camp Hill. A private, theatrical performance of “Mary Poppins, Jr.” will be performed by local students. The free and fun family activity is exclusively for children with special needs and their families. Ebenezer from pg 1 the front of the church bears the names of dozens of local individuals who were killed while serving in World Wars I and II, but it is unknown exactly what date that was put in place. In 1968, the site became the meeting place for Ebenezer United Methodist Church for the next 35 years. At that point it was sold to new owners and was vacant for two years before Mark and his wife, Ruth Ann, began renting the space in 2005 for the Ebenezer Baptist congregation. Keeping Ebenezer in the name seemed like the right choice to the Fillmores, given its rich history and the fact that most local residents know the white brick building that overlooks the Susquehanna River simply as Ebenezer. “We didn’t change much when we moved in,” said Mark, who had previously led a small Baptist church in Columbia before moving that congregation to the Ebenezer building in Wrightsville. Mark began preaching at age 32 and received training at Soul’s Haven Baptist Temple in Loganville, where he was also ordained by the pastor. “It’s just God’s calling on my life. I can’t do anything else and be satisfied,” reflected Mark. “That’s where our true joy is - in the Lord. We see the material world and people aren’t really satisfied with that. Of course, the older you get, you realize there’s more

All proceeds from the event will support Hands Across the Street. The Color My Dreams 5K is set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Chickies Creek Day Use Area, 1467 Long Lane, Columbia. People of all ages are invited to run or walk the course, which will follow a loop on Long Lane and through open fields and trails. The race will step off at 10 a.m. Five color stations will be situated at various points along the route, and organizer Eric Price noted

We’re just trying to educate people in the local area and across all of Lancaster County about what Hands Across the Street does,” Price said. The York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL) elected three new members to its board of directors and appointed several incumbent members into new, expanded roles at its May meeting. The positions are for twoyear terms, effective on July 1. YCAL welcomes new board members Dr. Mary Beth Grove, assistant superintendent at Spring Grove Area School District; Joyce Marburger, school counselor at Kennard-Dale High School; and Patrick Rumbaugh, director of AEC Network Services at Business Information Group. The YCAL board of directors also elected three members to take on expanded roles on its executive committee, with Lisa Dennis, career counselor at South Western High School, serving in the role of board chair; Dr. Robert Farrell, director of Academic Affairs and professor of biology at Penn State York, serving in the role of vice chair; and Kevin Schreiber, chief executive officer of the York County Economic Alliance, serving as treasurer. Raising HOPE Event Planned Raising HOPE, a music and art fundraiser to benefit H.O.P.E. Veterans Invited To Combat Recovery Course The James A. Danner VFW Post 537, 1095 Pines Road, Etters, will host a 12week REBOOT Combat Recovery course beginning on Thursday, Aug. 30. The training focuses on healing the spiritual and moral wounds of war and is led by combat veterans. The course is free to combat veterans, along with spouses and partners. On May 29, Salvation Army of York received a check for $550 from First Capital Federal Credit Union. The amount was the remainder of the total $1,800 that was raised for the Salvation Army through the First Cap Gives Back program, through which a charity is supported each quarter. Staff members sold peanut butter and coconut Easter eggs to members, employees paid to wear jeans on a specific day, and the credit union sponsored a table at the Boots and Bags event. Unity Sunday To Feature Reptile Program Columbia United Methodist Church, 510 Walnut St., Columbia, will host Jesse Rothacker and his reptiles on Sunday, July 29, at 10 a.m. as part of its Unity Sunday. Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary is a reptile rescue and education program that rescues reptiles in need and provides fun outreach to educate others about
reptiles. Founded in 2004 by Rothacker, Forgotten Friend has shared more than 2,000 shows with schools, churches, Scouts and other groups. The show, intended to encourage people to give reptiles a chance, is intended for people of all ages. The public is invited to attend. Following the program, attendees are invited to a potluck luncheon.

Students Collect Soda Tabs For Charity Wrightsville Elementary School’s Bible Adventure Program, formerly known as the Released Time program, collected soda tabs as part of its activities this year. Tabs were collected and then donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Hershey. Students brought in 118 pounds of tabs, which will be recycled. The funds will be used to help families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House while their loved ones are being treated at the Hershey Medical Center. The Ronald McDonald House provides free lodging and meals and is located close to the hospital so that family members can visit and support their loved ones at the hospital. In addition, the Ronald McDonald House provides a playroom for siblings and features a staff to ensure guests are comfortable. Bible Adventure students collect the soda tabs throughout the entire school year.
In April, students make a guess as to how many pounds of tabs they have collected. At the end of the year, the students tour the Ronald McDonald House facility so they are able to see firsthand how their efforts make an impact. The Bible Adventure Program is a nonprofit, state-approved program operated by JoyEl Generations. Children in public schools are permitted to leave their classrooms for one hour each week to receive Bible instruction, as well as sing worship songs, hear Bible stories, and memorize Scripture. A record number of 106 students were enrolled in the program at Wrightsville Elementary School last year.
