Garden Club Presents Scholarships

The Garden Club of York (GCY) recently presented $1,000 scholarships to York County students Mitchell Grove, Daniel Rohrbaugh and Andrew Schott. To be eligible for scholarships from the club, students must take college courses in biology and its related fields, such as horticulture, landscape architecture,
conservation, forestry, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental studies, land management, and wildlife sciences. Students may apply for the Garden Club Scholarships all four years of their college career. Grove is an Iowa State University sophomore majoring in agricultural engineering. He graduated from Red Lion Area High School. This is the third scholarship he has received from the GCY. He has also received a $1,000 scholarship this year from the state garden club. This summer, Grove plans to shadow a Penn State Extension Mary Lou Hendrix (second from left), agricultural engineer. Fire Company H.O.P.E. Sets Breakfast Receives Grant Goodwill Fire Company No. 1, Station 18, located at 1 S. Main St., Jacobus, will host an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Sunday, July 8, from 8 to 11 a.m. Separate fees have been set for adults and for children ages 2 to 12. Children under age 2 may eat for free. Breakfast will include bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, pancakes, French toast, potatoes, creamed chipped beef, sausage gravy, toast, and biscuits. Available beverages will be coffee, tea, milk, orange juice/drink, and chocolate milk. The event will support the fire company.

Help for Oncology Problems and Emotional Support (H.O.P.E.) recently received a $5,000 grant from Community Aid. After a year of partnership with the organization, H.O.P.E. was eligible to apply for the community grant program. H.O.P.E. is a volunteer-driven organization founded in 1994. It is dedicated to providing assistance and support services to cancer patients and their families.

Schott is a graduate from Southwestern High School in Hanover. He studies environmental science and biology at Messiah College. This summer, he plans to work on 4-H projects and stream restoration. Schott has also received a $1,000 four-year scholarship from the state garden club.
Hand Accepts Naval Academy Appointment
York Catholic High School student Brian Hand (front, center) has received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., where he plans to study naval architecture and aspires to become a surface warfare officer. In high school, he was an honor roll student, a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council president, captain of the soccer team, and a member of the baseball and track and field teams, musical, and stage crew. He has received awards in various subjects, as well as the Lloyd Bollinger Leadership Award. He placed third and first in the York Catholic Speech Festival in 2015 and 2018, respectively. He is an altar server at St. Joseph Church and a volunteer with Rotary Club of York and United Way of York County. Hope’s Closet To Offer Items Hope’s Closet at Pathway Community Church, 1731 W. Philadelphia St., York, will be open on Saturday, July 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hope’s Closet will hold its semiannual bag sale; there will be a set price per bag for all women’s, men’s and children’s clothing in July. The sale will not include shoes, accessories and jeans.

Senior Center Posts Schedule
The York Hiking Club will offer a variety of hikes throughout York County and the surrounding region. Nominal carpool fees may apply. Five- to 6-mile hikes will take place on Wednesdays, July 11, 18, and 25, at York County Parks’ Lake Williams. The pace will be brisk. The hikes will take place rain or shine. A scenic, 5-mile hike will take place on Saturday, July 7. The hike will start at the Wrightsville Boat Launch and end at the Moon Dancer Winery parking lot. A history-centered, 3-mile hike on Sunday, July 15, will take place at the historic York Iron Mine Company site at P. Joseph Raab Park, 2600 Hoff Road, Seven Valleys. Participants will hike around the old mining pits, look at the mine openings, climb approximately 700 feet in elevation, and walk about one-eighth mile down a stream. They should wear long pants, waterproof boots and bug spray. An easy, 8.5-mile hike will take place on Sunday, July 22, at the Swatara State Park rail trail. Hikers will cross the old Waterville Bridge, cross the new rail trail bridge across Swatara Creek, and pass a couple of old canal locks. The 20th Mason Dixon Fair will take place from Monday to Saturday, July 9 to 14, at Mason Dixon Fairground, 6988 Delta Road, Delta. The event’s purpose is to provide friendly competition among neighbors and a wholesome, educational atmosphere for people of all ages. Farmers and gardeners may compare their produce at one central location, and boys and girls may exhibit in all categories of baking, canning, cooking, needlework, vegetables, plants, and animals. Children may learn about food products and farm animals. This year’s fair will feature several changes and new divisions. Youth rodeo events will take place on Sunday and Tuesday evenings. The sheep show will now include a Young Flock class for all breeds and Cheviots as a recognized breed division. The beef cattle show will have a Red Angus breed division. The dairy beef cattle show will include an Open division, as well as the Youth Under 19 division. Participation by youths under age 19 are not required to be part of 4-H or FFA projects. The Mason Dixon Fair will include a variety of contests, musical performances, parades, and fireworks. Activities on July 9 will include the

She was a member of her school’s Link Crew, as well as the NHS, the National Art Honor Society, and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Smith played in the school orchestra during her freshman year and performed in the four annual spring musical productions. She was a member of the Show Choir for two years, and she performed with the Madrigals, Victorian Singers, Treble Makers, Women’s Chorus, and Chamber Choir all four years. to attend graduate school to earn a master’s degree. Bittinger’s grandmother has breast cancer. Keller graduated from South Western High School. He plans to attend York College, where he has been accepted into the Presidential Research Fellowship Program. He plans to major in biology and conduct research about consciousness. He plans to attend medical school to study anesthesiology. Keller’s academic achievements have placed him in the top 5 percent of his graduating class. He was a member of NHS and maintained a G.P.A. above 4.0, which has kept him on the distinguished honor roll all four years. Keller is actively involved with his school’s Link Crew. This year, Keller took three AP-level courses, as well as classes at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. At the Hanover Valley Presbyterian Church, Keller has been an organizer of Kid’s Fest, a yearly summer Bible camp for hundreds of children in the area. He has served as the leader and trainer of the helpers who conduct the children from activity to activity. A year ago, Keller’s mother was involved in a car accident, and a follow-up scan revealed a mass in one of her lungs. Though a nonsmoker, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. Smith graduated third in her class of 106 students at Hanover High School, with a G.P.A. over 4.0 and seven AP classes completed. She plans to attend Penn State University Park in the fall to major in biomedical engineering,

Help for Oncology Problems and Emotional Support (H.O.P.E.) recently awarded scholarships to Jenna Bittinger, Caleb Keller, and Rylee Smith. H.O.P.E. has awarded a total of 81 scholarships and more than $60,000 to high school seniors whose immediate families include a person with cancer, including some of the scholarship recipients themselves. Bittinger graduated in the top 5 percent of her class at Northern High School. While in high school, she completed six college courses and was a member of the National Honor Society (NHS) and the World Language Honor Society. As a member of the school volleyball team, she was selected for the Mid Penn All-Star Team in her junior and senior years and was chosen as the MVP for the Mid Penn Division out of 390 players. Her love for Spanish and her goal to become a bilingual teacher and work in disadvantaged Hispanic/Latino communities has been her motivation since she was young. During her senior year at Northern, Bittinger not only took Advanced Placement (AP) classes, but she also volunteered three times per week as a teaching assistant for seventh-grade middle school students. She has also tutored her high school peers in Spanish. In the fall, Bittinger plans to attend Houghton College, where her older sister just finished her sophomore year. She was one of 25 students out of 1,000 applicants who were accepted into the Honors Program to study abroad in London for a semester. Bittinger also plans

Foundation Publishes Tree Identification Book The Arbor Day Foundation has published a book intended to help people identify trees in a simple, step-bystep process. The book is titled “What Tree Is That?” and is available by donation to the tree-planting organization. “What Tree Is That?” features fullcolor, hand-drawn botanical illustrations highlighting the distinctive characteristics of many tree species found throughout the Eastern
and Central regions of the United States. Topics include shape and arrangement of the leaves, differences in the leafstalks, and specific characteristics of fruits, flowers, buds and bark. The guide is designed to help users make a positive species identification in a few steps. An interactive version of “What Tree is That?” and instructions for ordering the print version are available at www.arborday.org.
