Paws for THOUGHT

A lifeline in the heart of Cornwall

Just outside St Columb, the RSPCA Cornwall Branch operates a dedicated animal welfare facility that plays a vital role in supporting the county’s most vulnerable animals. As an independent, self-funded charity, the branch is responsible for rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals in need, delivering essential services that have a direct and lasting impact across Cornwall.

While many people associate the RSPCA with a single national organisation, the reality is quite different. Each of the over 150 branches across England and Wales operates as a separately registered charity, responsible for raising its own funds. Here in Cornwall, that responsibility rests firmly on local shoulders and local hearts.

The Venton Rehoming Centre has been a lifeline for animals since opening its doors in 1996. Established on a six-acre site near St Columb, the centre was born from a shared vision when four Cornish branches united to create something truly impactful for the county’s most vulnerable animals. Today, it’s a vital hub, providing shelter for up to 42 dogs and 40 cats at any one time. Behind the scenes, a dedicated team of 32 staff members — supported by an incredible network of volunteers — works tirelessly to ensure every animal receives not just food and medical care, but patience, kindness and understanding.

From strays and abandoned pets to animals rescued from neglect or cruelty, each arrival has a story. Some are frightened, others unwell, many simply misunderstood. But all are given the same promise: a safe space to heal, and the chance to find a loving home.

Running a facility like Venton is no small feat. The annual cost of keeping the centre operational is over £1 million, which includes veterinary fees, medication, food, utilities and essential daily expenses. As a self-funded branch, all of this must be raised locally. Unlike what many assume, no financial assistance comes from the national RSPCA. This means that every donation, every shop purchase, every fundraising event directly impacts animals here in Cornwall. Quite simply, money raised locally stays local, supporting the very community it comes from. And the impact is tangible. Already in 2026, over 103 animals have been successfully rehomed, each one representing a life transformed.

The work doesn’t stop at rehoming. Across Cornwall, Animal Welfare Officers reach out to animals and owners in need, offering support, advice and intervention where necessary. Meanwhile, the branch’s education team is shaping the future by working with young people to foster compassion, responsibility and respect for animals. It’s a holistic approach that recognises something important: lasting change comes not just from rescue, but from prevention and understanding.

For those looking to get involved, there are countless ways to support the charity’s work. The branch’s charity shops in Bude and Newquay are treasure troves of pre-loved fashion, books, homeware and pet essentials, with every purchase contributing directly to the care of animals at Venton. Donations are equally valued, with items gratefully received at the centre. There’s also an on-site pet shop offering food, toys and accessories — including high-quality secondhand items — ensuring that supporting the charity can go hand-in-hand with caring for your own pets.

For businesses, partnering with RSPCA Cornwall offers the chance to make a meaningful community impact while gaining visibility, with bespoke campaigns designed around each partner’s goals. And for those wanting a deeper connection, sponsorship opportunities – from kennels to cat pods – provide vital funding while honouring the animals that mean the most to us. Some of the most powerful support comes in the simplest forms. Initiatives like the “Cup of Kindness” campaign show how, for just £5 – the price of a coffee – supporters can help provide anything from a warm meal to a veterinary check. Alongside this, the Rescue Animal Sponsorship programme offers a more personal connection, allowing supporters to sponsor a specific animal in care and receive regular updates and photos as they progress on their journey towards a forever home.

RSPCA Cornwall Branch has a full fundraising calendar and one of the most joyful fundraising events of the year, is set against the stunning backdrop of Watergate Bay. The much-loved Paws on the Beach returns on Saturday 11th April 2026, in collaboration with the Watergate Bay Hotel. From 11am to 3pm, the beach will come alive with wagging tails, sandy paws and seaside fun. A highlight of the day is the dog show, where fourlegged friends can take centre stage, alongside an agility course designed to test their skills and burn off some energy.

Visitors can also enjoy behaviour advice and training support, browse a variety of stalls, and take part in raffles and tombolas, all contributing to vital fundraising efforts. For younger visitors, there’s no shortage of entertainment, with arts activities, face painting and creative fun throughout the day. Adding to the excitement this year, a Channel 5 documentary crew will be in attendance, capturing the spirit of the event and the incredible work of the charity.

The Paws on the Beach is a celebration of the bond between people and their pets and a powerful reminder of the community that makes this work possible.

At its core, the work of RSPCA Cornwall is about hope. It’s about giving animals — regardless of age, medical condition or past experiences — the chance to start again. It’s also about the special moments: a nervous dog learning to trust, a neglected cat finding comfort, a family opening their home to a new companion. As the charity states: “We can’t change their past, but together we can change their future.”

Holidays with

HOUNDS IN MIND

A place where dogs are wholeheartedly welcomed.

At Kilminorth, dogs are not an afterthought on the booking form but part of the guest list from the outset. Fourteen self-catering cottages sit within open countryside, offering room to settle in properly and relax. Several have enclosed gardens designed for safe, off-lead roaming, with a selection of cottages also featuring private hot tubs. The approach is thoroughly thought through, built around the realities of travelling with a pet.

The Wild Meadow has become a draw in its own right. Fitted with agility equipment, it gives energetic dogs space to run at full tilt or practise a little training before retreating to the comfort of their cottage. Close by, an outdoor bar keeps refreshments within reach, alongside a store of tennis balls and a well-used dog-stick library. On arrival, a generous welcome pack awaits, and each

dog receives a personalised tag to wear during their stay, a simple measure that offers reassurance when exploring new ground. After a coastal ramble or riverside wander into nearby Looe, a dedicated dog shower makes light work of sandy paws and brackish fur before anyone returns to the cottage.

The estate’s private woodland paths and river walk provide easy outings without the car, while the heated outdoor pool, tennis court and bar ensure that human guests are equally occupied.

Weddings are also on the calendar, and dogs are wholeheartedly welcomed. Because the best holidays and celebrations are the ones where no one gets left behind – especially the four-legged family members.

Four-legged

WELCOME IN FALMOUTH

A coastal escape where dogs are part of the experience.

St Michaels Resort in Falmouth has long been known for its laid-back comfort and prime location by Gyllyngvase beach. But for those travelling with a four-legged companion, it also offers something else – a genuine, all-encompassing welcome. One that isn’t an afterthought designed as a bolt-on to attract more guests.

Dogs are treated with consideration and thought throughout the resort. Dedicated dog-friendly rooms are available year-round, each equipped with a soft bed, water bowl and treats. Interiors reflect the calm, clean lines of coastal Cornwall – light, spacious and restful. From these rooms, it’s a short stroll to the beach and South West Coast Path, where dogs can roam on-lead or off, depending on the season and local guidelines.

There’s no need to leave your dog behind while you dine either. In Nourish, the resort’s relaxed bar and kitchen, dogs are welcome to sit beside their owners, under tables topped with colourful plates of locally sourced dishes.

After a long walk or a morning swim, it’s an easy place to refuel. Guests are also free to take their dogs to the bar area, where a cocktail or cold beer is often the end to a day well spent outdoors.

Those seeking a moment of stillness can head to the resort’s Spa Deck, where a sea-facing hot tub, barrel sauna and cold plunge await, while their dog rests in the room after a day of coastal adventures.

Dogs are welcomed without fuss. Rooms are ready, staff are accommodating and there’s space for them at the table. Everything is straightforward, making it easy to relax. One guest summed it up simply: “St Michaels was very welcoming and made our dog feel so included as part of our stay.”

Sandy paws and SHORESIDE STAYS

There’s something about the Cornish coast that feels better shared – especially with a dog in tow.

At Beach Retreats, discover shoreside selfcatering retreats that welcome four-legged guests, making it easy to plan a stay where no one is left behind. Think early morning walks along wide, empty sands, paws racing ahead on the tideline and afternoons spent exploring the South West Coast Path, where every turn brings a new scent, a new view, a new stretch of sea.

Cornwall has plenty of dog-friendly spaces all year round. Expansive beaches offer space to roam, while quieter coves become places to pause and watch the tide roll in. Back at your retreat, it’s all about comfort – warming up after salty swims, stretching out in a sunny spot by the window or curling up while dinner cooks in the kitchen.

Our dog-friendly stays range from sea-view apartments perfect for couples and their canine companion, to spacious beach houses made for multi-generational gatherings (sandy paws very much included). Each Beach Retreats stay sits close to a Cornish beach, meaning walks begin straight from the front door – no car required.

Beach Retreats makes coastal holidays effortless, with thoughtfully equipped interiors and everything you need for a relaxed stay. And if you need local insight or recommendations, the friendly team of coastal experts is always on hand to help you make the most of your time by the sea. Morning sea dips, long coastal walks, lazy beach days and golden hour swims are all part of the rhythm here. Bring your four-legged friend and feel free by the shore.

Scoop THE POOP

The small habit that can make a big difference.

Across Cornwall, dog walking is part of everyday life, from windswept coastal paths to peaceful inland trails and farmland. But when dog waste is left behind, it can cause significant environmental harm. Using simple solutions such as a Dicky Bag can make responsible disposal easier and more convenient.

Dog waste commonly contains harmful bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella, along with parasites like roundworms. These pathogens can survive in soil for months. In areas where children play, livestock graze, or people picnic, this contamination poses real risks. Cornwall’s frequent rainfall can wash uncollected

waste into streams and rivers, spreading pollution downstream.

Dog waste is also high in nitrogen and phosphorus. When it enters waterways, it can contribute to algal blooms. These blooms reduce oxygen in the water, harming fish and aquatic life, and can affect bathing water quality along Cornwall’s coastline – something vital to both residents and tourism.

In addition, neospora, only found in dog waste leads to destruction of herds of cattle and sheep and can be financially devastating for farmers; residue from insecticides we give our dogs to keep them healthy (flea and worming treatments) can kill wildlife, particularly insects; and when evidence of dog waste has disappeared into the soil the bacteria and pathogens can continue to exist for up to ten years.

Uncollected waste can disrupt fragile ecosystems, particularly on heathland and coastal grassland. Excess nutrients alter soil chemistry, allowing aggressive plant species to dominate and reducing biodiversity. In rural Cornwall, dog waste left in fields may also spread parasites to livestock, creating avoidable problems for farmers.

protein-rich diets also make their waste more nutrient-dense. This means it doesn’t simply “break down naturally” without consequences. One common excuse for leaving waste behind is the lack of nearby bins. This is where a Dicky Bag offers a practical solution. Designed to safely and hygienically store used poo bags without smell or leakage, it allows owners to carry waste comfortably until they reach a suitable bin. By removing inconvenience from the equation, products like the Dicky Bag support responsible pet ownership and help protect Cornwall’s landscapes, waterways, wildlife, and communities.

Unlike wild animal waste, dog waste is deposited in far greater concentrations because of the number of pets in popular walking areas. Dogs’

We spoke to co-owner, Mandy Davies to find out more: “As a dog owner myself I noticed how long I had to carry a poo bag for before finding a bin and this impacted the walks with my daughter. I noticed increasing dumped poo bags and decided I needed to solve the issue. Static bins are expensive to site and maintain and everyone complains it’s not where “they” want it. If you take your bin with you, which is essentially what a Dicky Bag is, it’s exactly where you need it. No smell, no swing, no inconvenience. I believe that if you make it easy for people to do the right thing, they will. And if you explain why it’s so important, they’ll embrace change. Happy walks and happy planet!”

A second CHANCE

Here in Cornwall, a dedicated team of staff, volunteers and supporters are helping vulnerable animals find their happy endings through the life-changing work of the National Animal Welfare Trust.

The dedicated team at National Animal Welfare Trust Cornwall (NAWT) based in Hayle, transforms the lives of hundreds of animals every year. Rescuing and rehoming more than 200 abandoned, unwanted and homeless pets annually, the centre provides a safe haven where animals can receive the care, rehabilitation and love they need before finding their forever homes.

The Cornwall centre continues the remarkable legacy of Molly Wyatt, whose name became synonymous with animal rescue across the county. Following her passing in 1996, the Trust proudly carried forward her work, ensuring that vulnerable animals in Cornwall continue to have somewhere to turn in times of need.

Every dog or cat arriving at the centre receives dedicated care from experienced staff and volunteers, from veterinary treatment to behavioural support, ensuring they are ready to begin a new chapter with loving owners. Those hoping to adopt can visit the animals currently waiting for homes online, while the centre’s social media pages regularly share updates and success stories.

Community support plays a vital role in keeping the centre running. Donations – both financial and practical – help cover the rising costs of food, shelter and veterinary care, particularly for animals arriving with complex medical needs. Volunteers are equally essential, with hundreds of people across the NAWT network giving their time to support animal care, fundraising, events and charity retail.

For those looking to get involved, there are plenty of ways to help – from volunteering or donating to organising fundraising events such as coastal walks, coffee mornings or sponsored dog walks. For animal lovers across Cornwall, supporting NAWT Cornwall is a simple but powerful way to help ensure that every animal has the cha nce to leave with a happy ending and a loving home.
