utumn in Cornwall arrives with a change of light first, and then a change of pace. The cliff paths turn gold and empty, the sea keeps its blue long into October and every dog for miles seems to know it is finally cool enough to run properly again. This is the season when Cornwall Living’s four-legged friends come into their own, trading busy summer sands for the county’s best-kept walking secrets. Cornwall’s beaches run to nearly three hundred miles of coastline and, from October, the seasonal dog bans lift on most of them. Think long low-tide beach rambles, woodland loops through National Trust grounds and windswept clifftops, where happy hounds can vanish into the gorse and reappear thrilled. All that effort needs a proper reward and where better than at one of the Duchy’s many dog-friendly pubs? Here muddy paws are welcomed beside the fire, water bowls are filled and with so many pooch-perfect places to stay, the adventure need not end at teatime. Quite simply, this is the best time of year to be a dog in Cornwall.

t’s 2026, and Beachside Holiday Park will be opening its gates to well-behaved dogs for the first time in several decades, giving guests a new way to enjoy a Cornish holiday with their four-legged companions. For nearly 65 years, Beachside has built its reputation on providing a relaxed place for couples and families to enjoy time by the coast. That remains unchanged, with the introduction of dogs carefully planned to ensure the atmosphere continues to work for everyone. Up to two dogs can stay with each booking, with dog-friendly accommodation available across selected chalets, bungalows, apartments, accessible apartments and dune lodges. Selected touring and large tent pitches will also welcome dogs.

There’s a dedicated exercise area at the top of the park, while the surrounding dunes, South West Coast Path and three-mile sandy beach offer plenty of opportunities for walks. Dogs will need to be kept on a short lead around the park and must not be left unattended in accommodation or on pitches. Well-behaved dogs will be welcome in designated areas of Coast, the family restaurant and bar, but not around the pool, shower and toilet facilities, games room or children’s play areas. It marks a new chapter for Beachside, allowing more guests to experience Cornwall together, dogs included, while keeping the welcoming character that has brought generations back to the park.

hen the leaves begin to turn and the beaches take on their autumn character, Wooda makes a persuasive case for bringing the family dog along. RSPCA Cornwall Branch celebrates three decades at the Venton Centre.
he Venton Centre welcomed its first animals in 1996, following the coming together of four Cornish RSPCA branches to create a dedicated animal welfare centre serving the whole county. Over the last 30 years, thousands of animals have come through its doors needing safety, rehabilitation and a second chance. Today it continues to rehabilitate and rehome dogs and cats from across Cornwall, supporting animals with increasingly complex behavioural, emotional and medical needs. As RSCPA Cornwall Branch celebrates its 30th anniversary, it is now fundraising to refurbish the original kennel block, creating calmer, more flexible spaces designed around the welfare and rehabilitation needs of today’s rescue dogs. The Tree That Cornwall Grew anniversary appeal invites the community to help secure the future of the centre. Supporters can add a leaf to a virtual tree from just £3. There will also be a permanent tree at the Venton Centre recognising those who have helped make the next chapter possible. Looking ahead to 2027, RSPCA Cornwall Branch will continue improving the facilities, developing their
rehabilitation and rehoming work, strengthening fostering and community engagement and ensuring the Venton Centre is ready for the animals in need over the next 30 years. As a self-funded local charity, it now costs more than £1 million every year to run the centre.
