find myself drawn to food at this time of year, when the light turns earlier and the sea takes on a steel-grey depth that asks for something warmer in return. Cornwall’s kitchens feel it too. Chalkboards along the harbourfronts trade mackerel and salad for braised shin, wild mushroom risotto and slow-roasted squash, while chefs reach into the county’s autumn larder for game, foraged sloes and blackberries and the last shellfish pulled from Falmouth Bay. Wine lists deepen alongside the menus and log baskets are stacked high beside crackling hearths, and I can think of no better way to greet the season than a slow evening by the fire, glass in hand, in no hurry at all. A STUDY IN DETAIL An exhibition of paintings and prints by one of the last masters of copperplate engraving in England will show at Terre Verte Gallery, Altarnun this autumn. Brian Hanscomb has lived on the edge of Bodmin Moor for half a lifetime, painting and engraving a peerless sequence of miniature prints, full of minutely observed detail and a wry humour about human interactions with this ancient landscape. This retrospective includes work from his journeyman years in the 1960s through to his latest engravings made about the moor earlier in 2026. For those seeking an opportunity to sample that first delicate combination of flavours, a three-course lunch for £24 allows a perfect introductory insight into the hotel’s relaxed yet refined dining experience. Think fresh seafood plucked from nearby waters, top-quality cuts and indulgent desserts with a panoramic view of the River Fal.
When it comes to a personal tour of the season’s very best offering, Bobby’s sell-out Taste of Cornwall events are unique in the sense that each of the six courses served throughout the evening arrives with Bobby’s expert insight and professional guidance, not to mention the added option of a carefully selected accompanying wine flight. With the next event taking place on 29th October in the restaurant’s private Sun Deck, there are only so many seats at the table. mily Hobhouse was a Cornish humanitarian, pacifist and campaigner whose courage carried her from a quiet Cornish parish to South Africa. During the Anglo-Boer War, she exposed the devastating conditions endured by Boer women and children in British concentration camps, defying convention and challenging an empire in her determination to help others. Her extraordinary life is brought vividly into the present through three connected experiences. In the beautifully restored Grade II listed Rectory, visitors enter Emily’s childhood home as it might have appeared in 1875. Richly detailed rooms and thoughtful storytelling reveal Victorian family life and the surroundings that helped shape her values.

Step inside one of Cornwall’s most remarkable true stories at The Story of Emily. The War Rooms then take visitors on a powerful, immersive journey through the conflict that changed Emily’s life. Film, sound, installations and virtual reality transport audiences from a Boer homestead and scorched-earth landscape to the concentration camps Emily fought to expose. Sensitively used, immersive technology invites visitors to witness, understand and reflect. The experience continues with the third chapter of the story in the Restaurant, with views across the Kitchen Garden. This taste of history offers a moment of restoration after the emotional intensity of the War Rooms, while continuing the story through South African heritage recipes from the late 1800s, reimagined with fresh Cornish ingredients. Venturing outside, visitors can explore the gardens, meet the estate’s animals, discover the Victorian Glasshouse and enjoy far-reaching countryside views. The Story of Emily has received a 2026 THEA Award for Outstanding Achievement – the only UK recipient that year – VisitEngland Gold for New Tourism Business of the Year 2026, and the RIBA South West & Wessex Building of the Year Award 2025.

ulls wheel over Falmouth's working harbour as lunch service gets underway at The Greenbank, where the Water's Edge restaurant opens straight onto the water and the smell of something buttery drifts out from the kitchen. This is a hotel that takes its food seriously, and this season it has given diners three good reasons to book a table. First, there's the deal that solves the age-old dilemma of ordering pudding on a weekday. Available Monday to Saturday from 12pm until 2.30pm, it delivers three courses for £24, dessert included, built from the same seasonal, Cornish-leaning menu that has made head chef Bobby Southworth's kitchen a name to know along the south coast. Portions are served as a lighter, lunchsuited take on the full dinner menu. We recommend booking ahead as demand for this tasty offer tends to be brisk.
A taste of Falmouth’s
finest
The Greenbank is serving up three ways to fall for Falmouth this season, from a lunchtime steal to Friday night cocktails with a harbour view. Come December, the focus shifts to Christmas. The festive lunch menu runs throughout the month from 12pm until 3pm and offers three courses for £35, with hand-rolled turkey paupiette, a prime white fish stew with samphire and a cranberry and pecan nut roast among the mains, followed by desserts that stretch from spiced clementine crème brûlée to a properly traditional Christmas pudding with brandy sauce. Evening sittings and a festive afternoon tea are also on offer for anyone keen to spread their yuletide gatherings across the month. For something decadent after dark, Cocktail Club takes over the Water's Edge bar every Friday from 5pm until late, with two cocktails for £20. The list runs from a classic Negroni and Old Fashioned to a Bramble made with Tarquin's Blackberry Gin and a spicy jalapeño Margarita, all served with a side of harbour lights through the window. Ask to keep a table if food is on the cards too. s summer comes to an end, the Isles of Scilly take on a different character. The pace slows, the beaches and coastal paths become quieter and October offers the opportunity to experience the islands without the crowds of the main summer season. For those living in Cornwall, Scilly is close enough to make a spontaneous few days away possible, but different enough to feel like a proper change of scene. Leave Penzance behind and, before long, the mainland slips below the horizon and the islands appear ahead. Even the journey becomes part of the adventure. Early autumn can still carry something of summer with it. September often brings lingering warmth and long days, while October can deliver bright, crisp weather that makes getting outdoors particularly enjoyable. Scilly’s famously milder climate means autumn days can be surprisingly gentle, and there is always the possibility of an Indian summer – those beautiful spells when the sun returns and it feels as though summer has decided not quite to leave. It’s a season made for exploring. Walk the coastal paths without the heat of midsummer, cycle the quiet island lanes, discover beaches and coves, or simply find somewhere to sit and watch the sea. The changing light can make familiar landscapes feel completely different, while the quieter atmosphere gives visitors time to experience the islands without having to hurry. For families, autumn brings another opportunity to discover Scilly. October half-term is a chance to trade the usual busy holiday attractions for an island adventure. ince April 1st 1987 Cornwall Air Ambulance has proudly served the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, providing lifesaving critical care to seriously ill or injured patients. Last year, one of those patients was three-year-old Mia Gander who suffered a sudden status epilepticus during a family holiday in Cornwall. Whilst in the family home, Mia began to have a seizure, having never had one before, and became unresponsive. Once she came around, Mia’s family decided to act quickly by getting her to the nearest medical facility. However, whilst en route in the car, Mia had another aggressive and prolonged seizure, which lasted 25 minutes. The Cornwall Air Ambulance helicopter and crew were dispatched to the family, with Pilot Rich Dixon, Doctor Mike Prosser and Critical Care Paramedics Jeremy Griffiths and Lisa Ball on board. After landing in a nearby field they were able to give Mia initial treatment on the roadside, before the crew at the scene then airlifted her, alongside her mum Carissa, to Derriford Hospital for onward care, where she was diagnosed with epilepsy. Carissa says, “I believe that Cornwall Air Ambulance saved Mia’s life that day and I don’t know what we would have done without them. I don’t even like to think about what may have happened if they were not there – it scares me. I can never thank the crew enough who helped Mia.” Since the incident, Mia has started taking medication and has been seizure-free since last October. Mia, who had previously been nonverbal, has now also started to speak her first words since commencing treatment. Carissa now generously supports the charity with a regular gift donation each month. In a county where rugged coastlines, expansive farmland and difficult-to-navigate roads are commonplace, the necessity of an ambulance helicopter service has always been clear. Founded in response to the pressing need for rapid medical care in Cornwall’s remote areas, Cornwall Air Ambulance’s vision has been to bridge the gap between medical emergencies and timely assistance.
From the first BO 105 helicopter that took flight in 1987 to the current advanced AW169, every advancement has been driven by an unwavering commitment to saving lives. Today, the charity’s two AW169 helicopters are equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology; serving as an airborne A&E unit capable of delivering advanced care to patients in need.
“I don’t know what we would have done without them.” As a charity, Cornwall Air Ambulance relies on the generosity of donations and fundraisers to keep the helicopters in the air and the crew providing critical care across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The Fire Within by Stephanie Sandercock From a landscape of rock-like blacks and deep earthen browns, a luminous yellow and orange radiance rises in The Fire Within. The work feels elemental, as though light has been uncovered rather than painted, a hidden glow held deep within the land itself. Layers of plaster are built, cut, and carved back to reveal a richly textured surface that echoes the weight and memory of stone. From this darkness, the fire emerges. 8th – 11th October 2026 Falmouth Falmouth Oyster Festival returns to Events Square from 8th to 11th October, marking the start of the native oyster dredging season with four days of food, music and maritime tradition. The festival celebrates the Fal Oyster, still harvested using sail, oar and hand-pulled dredges, alongside the wider wealth of Cornish seafood. Expect live cookery demonstrations from some of Cornwall’s leading chefs, oyster and seafood bars, local produce, arts and crafts, and the annual oyster shucking competition.
