Discovering Krowji; an inspirational environment that acts as an invaluable creative hub for Cornwall.
Words by HANNAH TAPPING
Walking into the Old Grammar School building at Krowji heralds a moment of nostalgia. The parquet floors bare the imprints of decades of feet walking to lessons; wooden stair rails reveal the patina created by many a hand; while high ceilings and vast windows echo with the sound of voices from times past. Today, while children no longer roam the corridors, the space continues to be a place of learning and creativity.
sustainable features. Phase two started on site in summer 2019, expanding the flagship Percy Williams Building. The Phase two development, funded mostly by the European Regional Development Fund, Arts Council England, and Cornwall Council, created an extra 21 “BREEAM Excellent” studios, adding space for around 40 people.
Krowji – meaning ‘workshop’ or ‘shed’ in Cornish – was built on a foundation where making, crafting and creating come first. Over the past two decades, it has evolved into a cultural ecosystem where artistic practice thrives, connections are made and ideas abound. The story of Krowji began with a clear intention; to provide a professional, supportive environment where creative practitioners could flourish. Founded in 1983, Creative Kernow (formerly ACT) provides a wide range of creative programmes and activities, working towards a thriving Cornwall powered by creativity. In line with its ethos of championing creativity as a force for positive change, it had a vision to develop a hub in which a diverse spectrum of creatives could work alongside each other, supporting, promoting and collaborating to contribute to the growth of the creative economy in Cornwall. Creative Kernow purchased the former grammar school site in Redruth in 2005 and Krowji Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Creative Kernow, was formed in 2007.
Since then, significant investment has taken place. Phase one, part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, opened in 2015, saw construction of 20,000 sq.ft. of workspace to expand the creative industries cluster with 50 new units in a new building which has a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ accreditation, incorporating photovoltaic cells and other environmentally
Phase three of the development saw 19 container studios open in May 2025 to replace studios lost to fire in 2021. Funded by Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme, which is managed by Cornwall Council and also by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, this series of custom-built sustainable studios were designed specifically to accommodate semi-industrial artists and makers with noisier or messier disciplines. From sculptors and installation artists, leather workers, small-scale metal and wood workers, ceramicists, jewellers and sound/audio artists, the tenants have the option of a dedicated outside working area attached to their studio. Unlike traditional artist studios that might simply offer space and facilities, Krowji was conceived with a wider purpose: to nurture a creative community where artists benefit from proximity to one another, share ideas and inspiration and access resources that support both artistic and professional growth. Today, that purpose is reflected throughout the hub, from shared pottery workshops and jewellers’ studios to bright open-plan spaces, meeting rooms and an in-house café housed in one of the old school halls. In a landscape where working in isolation remains common for many creatives, Krowji offers a place to be part of a wider creative network while maintaining the freedom of individual practice.
Krowji provides studios in a variety of sizes and formats to meet the practical demands of diverse creative practices. Whether an artist requires a compact private studio for focused work or a larger open-plan area for installations and collaborative projects, the hub offers

flexible and affordable solutions. Many artists value the 24-hour access, central location and security that comes with having dedicated professional space beyond the constraints of working from home.
Much attention to detail is paid here. The larger studios have high ceilings and vast windows in order to maximise on light, as well as the views across Cornwall’s mining landscape to Carn Brea beyond. Corridors flow between studios and as we pass through, artist’s work adorns the walls along the way. Some studios are wonderfully eclectic, piled up with artistic ephemera; others boast minimalist spaces as graphic designers ply their trade behind pristine iMacs. The combination of creative minds here holds no bounds.
The hub has also hosted residency programmes and collaborative initiatives designed to expand artists’ professional horizons. The Krowji and Cornwall College Graduate Studio Award, for example, bridged the gap between academic study and professional practice by offering early-career artists a year of rent-free studio space alongside professional development support. I was lucky enough to visit the shared studio of ceramicist Sarah Cooling, who started her personal Krowji journey with a residency. Sharing a space with artist Andrew Barrowman, the pair tell me that being able to work alongside other creatives is hugely beneficial.
Krowji also offers occasional project space opportunities where Creative Kernow Associates members can apply to use a studio for a specific piece of work for one to two months. Through this, Krowji has attracted both emerging and established artists needing space to develop work for a solo show.
Another such success story is a collaboration between artists Chloe Woods and Gary Ray Smith, whose muse Claude Decrepney has become hot property in the art world. By working together, they have taken Claude on a creative journey that might otherwise not have happened. It’s clear as we chat, that their shared studio and ideas have unlocked endless, and sometimes surprising opportunities.
In support of its tenants, Krowji also extends its impact through community and public engagement initiatives. Events such as last year’s Summer Showcase and their annual Open Studios, allow artists to open their workspaces to the public, encouraging dialogue between makers and audiences while increasing visibility for individual practice.
Krowji is also home to Bill’s Attic. Sited in the converted Old Schoolhouse this incredible ‘creation and contemplation’ space contains
thousands of artefacts. The collection was bequeathed by Bill Mitchell, internationally recognised Artistic Director of WildWorks and Kneehigh Theatre, who died in 2017. A gift for the artist in everyone and aimed at inspiring a fresh generation of creators, makers, thinkers and radicals the space is available to hire for workshops, meetings and residencies.
In an era when creative careers are increasingly precarious and often lack institutional support, spaces like Krowji provide essential infrastructure. It is about access to a professional workspace, connection to peers and entry into networks that generate opportunity. For many artists based in Cornwall and beyond, Krowji functions as an invaluable creative base. Since its inception, Krowji has grown to become Cornwall’s largest creative hub, now hosting over 150 studios and workspace tailored to the diverse needs of visual artists, makers, designers, digital creatives and cultural organisations.

Shelters for the senses
This summer, Tate St Ives presents the first UK museum exhibition dedicated to Lithuanian American artist Aleksandra Kasuba. Spanning seven decades, the show traces her evolution from early paintings and mosaics to ambitious sculptures and immersive spatial environments that reimagined how people might inhabit space.
Born in Lithuania in 1923, Kasuba fled successive Soviet and Nazi occupations in 1944, later emigrating to the United States. In New York she established a reputation for monumental public commissions, including works in Washington DC, Chicago and at the World Trade Center. Yet it was her radical environments of the 1970s that defined her vision. Inspired by shells, rock formations and marine life, she rejected rigid architecture in favour of tensile fabric structures without right angles, seeking a more harmonious relationship between people and their

surroundings. As she told The New Yorker in 1971, she wanted to “kill the square”.
The exhibition includes Spectrum: An Afterthought (1975), a vivid passageway of coloured zones constructed from aluminium, neon and stretched fabric, accompanied by sound and scent to heighten its sensory impact. Also featured is Three-dimensional Rug (1971), part of a partial recreation of her New York Live-In Environment, alongside sculptures, drawings and models from the Lithuanian National Museum of Art.
Aleksandra Kasuba: Shelters for Senses reveals a pioneering figure whose utopian experiments in art and architecture feel strikingly timely today.

Wild Flowers and a Wild Sea Dollar Cove by Simon Jewell
For Simon, painting is a process of building layers to create texture and depth. The rugged Cornish landscape and surrounding sea naturally suit an impasto approach. Working mainly in oils, he uses a palette knife, his fingers and found objects to shape thick, expressive surfaces. His work seeks to capture the mood and intensity of land and sea, translating the energy of the coastal environment into paintings that explore the interplay of light, water and atmosphere, evoking a strong sense of place and emotion.
Vincent has a purpose-built studio adjacent to his home in Wadebridge, Cornwall, which has far-reaching views over the Camel Estuary. Open from 10am to 4pm daily, these hours can be flexible, simply give him a call to check his availability outside of these times. He takes inspiration for his seascape painting from the wonderful Cornish coast. He is happy to take on Commissions, an example of which is shown. Exhibition dates for 2026, at the Padstow Institute, Padstow PL28 8AB, are 3rd to 12th May, 21st to 30th June and 24th to 31st August. STEPHANIE SANDERCOCK
Wishes on the Wind by Stephanie Sandercock
Born of layered surfaces, breath-slow mark-making and the quiet shimmer of 24ct gold, ‘Velvet Devotion’ carries the aura of an offering. These works inhabit the threshold between the seen and the felt – where colour becomes prayer, texture becomes memory, and intention moves like wind through hidden places. Each piece draws on the ancient ritual of tying wishes to sacred trees and trusting them to the elements, letting hope travel on currents we cannot name.

It’s a story of a company that has hit its target, time and again. Here’s how.
For more than sixty years, Cornish Traditional Cottages has been helping holiday homeowners across Cornwall make the most of their properties, while preserving everything that makes them special.
Founded in 1964 and still proudly familyrun, they specialise exclusively in Cornwall. That local focus means they understand not just the market, but the nuances of each village, coastline and community. From character cottages and coastal retreats to rural boltholes and family homes, their role is simple: to connect the right guests with the right properties and to support owners every step of the way.
In a world increasingly dominated by national chains and global booking platforms, many owners are rediscovering the value of working with an independent agency that offers genuine local knowledge, honest advice and a personal service. They certainly don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, they work closely with owners to tailor pricing, marketing and availability to suit their property and their goals.
An experienced team manages bookings, guest communication and marketing across the website and trusted partner channels, ensuring maximum visibility while protecting
your income and your property. Owners benefit from transparent fees, flexible pricing strategies and a team that is always on hand to talk things through. No call centres, no scripts.
They’re also proud that a significant number of new properties join them through personal recommendation. If you’re an owner, housekeeper, tradesperson, or simply know someone considering holiday letting, they run a referral scheme and are always happy to explain how it works. Just get in touch for a no-obligation chat.
Whether you’re new to holiday letting or reviewing how your property is currently managed, Cornish Traditional Cottages believes success comes from partnership, trust and local expertise that is earned over time. After six decades, that’s still how they do things.

OF OPPORTUNITYShifting sands
As guests continue to rethink how, when and why they travel, Cornwall is emerging as one of the UK’s most exciting destinations for the new wave of holiday trends. According to the newly released Cornish Cottage Holidays Market Insights Report 2026, visitor behaviour has shifted dramatically over the past year and these changes present real opportunities for holiday home owners.
One of the strongest movements shaping the year ahead is the rise of the micro-trip. With busy lives and limited annual leave, guests are opting for shorter, more frequent escapes and Cornwall’s blend of coast, culture and countryside makes it the perfect fit. In 2025, 28% of all bookings were short breaks, with demand increasing year-on-year. Holiday home owners who welcome three, four or five-night stays benefit from both higher occupancy and, on average, 25% more annual revenue.
Another trend gathering pace is the tastecation. A third of UK travellers have chosen a destination specifically for its food experiences, and Cornwall is perfectly placed to benefit. According to the Sykes Staycation Index 2025, traditional British pubs are the top staycation dining option, followed by independent local restaurants and fish and chip shops – all three of which are found in abundance in Cornwall! With award-winning restaurants, vineyards, farm shops and cafés, the county continues to attract guests with a passion for great local produce. From Padstow’s vibrant seafood scene to the artisan bakeries of Porthleven, visitors are increasingly planning their stays around culinary discovery, and properties located near
Breaks redefined: travel insights from Cornish Cottage Holidays
foodie hotspots are already seeing a notable uplift in search demand.
The report also highlights a surge in solo travel, with one in three Brits now more likely to take a solo break than they were five years ago. Cornwall’s walking routes, calm coves and creative heritage make it an ideal destination for those seeking restorative time away. In fact, 42% of last year’s bookings were made by couples, and 4% by solo travellers, reflecting a growing appetite for flexible, independent stays.
Looking ahead, the team at Cornish Cottage Holidays feels genuinely energised by what 2026 holds. As Sharon Partridge, Regional Owner Experience Manager, shares: “We’re seeing guests embrace Cornwall in so many new ways, from short, spontaneous getaways to foodie-focused adventures. It’s an incredibly exciting time for owners, and we’re here to help them make the very most of the opportunities this season will bring.”
At Cornish Cottage Holidays, they work with over 800 property owners across the county, combining 50 years of local expertise with the national reach of Sykes Holiday Cottages. Their 2026 Market Insights Report is designed to help owners understand what guests want and how to stay ahead in a fast-changing market. Where old furniture finds new purpose
Located on Falmouth’s bustling Old High Street, The Grey Lurcher is far more than a gift shop; it is home to the iconic Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. In a world dominated by flatpack furniture, there is something sneakily rebellious about picking up a paintbrush. Simply stocking the full range of Annie Sloan products offers possibility. Chalk Paint is an invitation to keep the much-loved family table or transform a second-hand dresser into something entirely personal.
Annie Sloan paint makes creativity feel easy. With little to no sanding and rarely any need for priming, it can be used on wood, laminate and even metal. Pieces can be sealed or left uncoated, depending on the desired finish. Its signature chalky matt texture and beautifully chosen palette of colours mean it can be used straight from the tin.
Upcycling furniture is is a sustainable choice. Every piece painted is one less item heading
to the landfill and every refreshed chair is one less reason to buy mass-produced. Those velvety Annie Sloan shades have a habit of drawing people in. And what’s more the team at The Grey Lurcher are on hand to offer guidance on techniques and finishes. Chalk Paint requires minimal preparation while delivering smooth, reliable coverage and professional-looking results. There is a particular satisfaction in stepping back from a finished piece and realising it has been given new life. A once-forgotten item can take pride of place once more, carrying both its history and the creativity of its owner.
Visitors are warmly invited to call at 20 High Street, Falmouth TR11 2AB, where inspiration and a selection of beautiful gifts await.

What’s in
A NAME?
Keynvor is the Cornish word for ocean or main sea. Rooted in Celtic heritage and location, it is synonymous with flow and strength, and so is a fittingly apt name for a company that is based on the Lizard Peninsula. One that embraces these positive attributes on a daily basis as it carries out its work across Cornwall.
The company in question? Keynvor Construction. Offering hands-on project management for new builds, extensions, renovations and commercial projects, the whole team understands that for the end user, there is a significant emotional and financial investment in any one of these types of projects. As a consequence, they aim to be transparent and collaborative along the whole journey, from initial contact to handover. By adhering to their guiding principles, flow is achieved through listening to what the client requires, managing expectation in a considered and consultative manner, whilst strength manifests itself in the bond that is formed between client and contractor and in the final structure itself. These may be abstract words, but when employed in the world of construction, they can produce tangible results that account for Keynvor Construction’s success. They are not just a marketing sign-off but a touchstone feeding

into the way the company goes about its business. In conjunction with this side of the business is its complementary derivative – Keynvor Kitchens. With offices and a comprehensive showroom in Predannack, clients can access the benefits of being able to talk to real designers, rather than a disembodied algorithm. Here, they can explore materials and finishes and benefit from wisdom gained through experience rather than what pops up on top of a Google search list. From bespoke kitchen design and supply to wider interior design services, Keynvor Kitchens brings both creativity and practicality together to enhance interior spaces.
Ultimately, the strength of the Keynvor family lies in how these two halves come together. Construction and interior design are aligned, meaning ideas flow smoothly from structural plans through to the final finishing flourishes. Clients benefit from the shared vision of one cohesive team who are working upon foundations that are both tangible and metaphorical.
As we move toward spring, longer days and brighter skies refocus our attention…
Not just on the prospect of summer holidays and outdoor living, but possibly the benefits to be had by embracing what that orange orb in the sky also has to offer besides a suntan! Solar energy.
At GreenGenUK, this seasonal shift always brings a surge of enquiries, but this year, they’re seeing some clear trends emerging across Cornwall.
Homeowners are no longer just looking to install Solar PV to reduce their electricity bills; they’re thinking smarter about how they generate, store and use this energy. While high-performance solar panels remain at the core of every system, battery storage has rapidly become the musthave accompaniment.
More than ever, customers are choosing battery systems that offer backup capability. With energy security front of mind, homeowners want reassurance that they can keep essential appliances running during grid interruptions, such as those experienced during Storm Goretti. Modern battery storage systems now allow properties to store excess daytime generation and use it in the evening, and in many cases, provide backup power when it’s needed most. As technology improves, battery storage is no longer an afterthought; it’s becoming a standard part of a future-ready installation.
GreenGenUK is also seeing growing demand for aesthetically pleasing installations. Solar catchment has evolved. It’s not just about performance, but about enhancing the look of your home. Sleek, all-black panels such as the Aiko range are proving especially popular. These high-performing panels offer exceptional efficiency while delivering a contemporary finish that complements both modern new builds and traditional Cornish properties.
Spring is the ideal time to install Solar PV. By acting now, homeowners can maximise generation throughout the sunniest months of the year and take full advantage of longer daylight hours.
Whether the goal is lowering energy bills, increasing energy independence, reducing carbon footprint or future-proofing a property, Solar PV paired with battery storage has never been a smarter investment.
If you’re planning improvements for 2026, now is the time to explore what solar can do for your home.

Bathroom
WELLNESS
Experience the rise of bathroom wellness with design specialists, Ripples.
Wellness is no longer confined to spas, retreats or dedicated
fitness spaces. In 2026, it has
firmly moved into the home and nowhere is this shift more evident than in the bathroom. Once viewed purely as a functional space, the bathroom is now being reimagined as a place for restoration, balance and everyday self-care. Here, Elina, Designer at Ripples Truro, explains how thoughtful design can transform daily routines into meaningful moments of calm.
So, what does bathroom wellness look like in 2026? It’s not about gimmicks or indulgence for indulgence’s sake. Instead, it’s a careful layering of atmosphere, comfort and intelligent design choices that turn everyday rituals into moments of restoration.
Light is one of the most powerful tools in a wellness-led bathroom. Natural daylight remains highly desirable, but where that isn’t possible, carefully planned artificial lighting can have a profound effect. Layered lighting combining ambient glow, used with soft task lighting and subtle accent lighting, creates a soothing environment and avoids the harsh, clinical feel traditionally associated with bathrooms. Warm, adjustable lighting allows the space to respond to different times of day
and different moods. Warmth and comfort are equally important. Features such as underfloor heating, warm surfaces and gentle ambient heat help the body relax, particularly in the colder months. These elements encourage you to linger rather than rush, shifting the bathroom from a purely functional space into one that feels nurturing and restorative.
Material choice also plays a key role in 2026’s wellness-focused bathrooms. Tactile, natural finishes are favoured over high-gloss surfaces, creating spaces that feel grounded and calm. Stone, softly textured tiles, wood-effect finishes and muted colour palettes all contribute to an atmosphere that feels reassuring rather than overstimulating.
Finally, wellness-led bathrooms prioritise clarity and calm. Considered layouts, wellproportioned fittings and concealed storage help keep surfaces clear and the space visually restful. A bathroom that feels organised and intentional has a direct impact on how relaxing it feels to use.

SUBTLE PRESENCE Elevated views
Practical balcony solutions for modern Cornish homes.
The famous line, “But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks?” is spoken by Romeo in Act 2, Scene 2 of Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s line is often quoted in reference to a balcony in Verona that, in truth, projects only modestly from the wall. The Juliet balcony, slight in depth yet strong in presence, is one of Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems’ main offerings, adapted for contemporary homes across Cornwall.
A Juliet balcony is fixed directly to the exterior façade in front of full-height doors or glazing on an upper storey. There is no platform beneath one’s feet. Instead, a guarded opening allows doors to be thrown wide without compromising safety. The effect is immediate: rooms gain a greater sense of outlook, and upper floors benefit from improved ventilation when doors are opened. Kestrel offers designs suited to new developments as well as period renovations. Traditional wrought iron has given way in many cases to frameless glass or stainless steel, chosen for clarity of view and durability in coastal conditions. Powder-coated finishes can be matched to existing frames, while
mirror-polished steel provides a sharper architectural statement. Some clients opt for a visible handrail; others prefer an uninterrupted pane.
The practical case is straightforward. Installation requires no projecting deck or additional support, so costs remain lower than those associated with a walk-on structure. Disruption is limited and in many instances the work falls within permitted development, subject to local authority guidance, which can simplify the process for householders mindful of timescales.
Bruce and James, who lead the company, undertake site visits to assess each property in person. They advise on proportions, fixings and compliance with current regulations, ensuring that each installation meets safety standards without dominating the elevation. For private houses seeking to introduce full-height glazing, Kestrel’s Juliet balconies provide a measured intervention: modest in projection and grounded in solid workmanship.

Designed
TO LAST
A considered window solution that blends style and performance.
By their very nature, window shutters offer a level of versatility that curtains and blinds simply can’t match. They answer the growing demand for practical window solutions that provide a balance between light control, privacy and visual appeal.
More than a decade ago, Andrew Cook spotted this shift. He recognised that while curtains and blinds had enjoyed centuries of popularity, they were increasingly falling short on durability, energy performance and design flexibility. Convinced that shutters were set to become the window covering of choice, he founded Just Shutters. What began as a business insight soon became a success story, ultimately prompting a family move to Cornwall to grow the company further.
Now firmly established in Newquay, Just Shutters serves homes across Cornwall and Devon, working with full-time residents and holiday let owners alike. Their service is deliberately streamlined, combining online consultations via Zoom or FaceTime with swift, professional installation. Most shutters are fitted within two to three hours, an advantage that’s particularly valuable in properties with tight changeover schedules.
Plantation shutters are prized for both their performance and their adaptability. Just Shutters offers an extensive range of materials, colours and finishes, including exclusive options. From traditional smaller louvres with
tilt-rods to clean-lined wide panels, the designs suit period cottages and contemporary builds alike. Café-style, tier-on-tier, tracked, shaped and even arched or porthole shutters can all be made to measure, enhancing kerb appeal as well as interiors. Shutters are robust, repairable and resistant to warping or fading, which Just Shutters reinforces with an industry-leading lifetime guarantee. Energy efficiency is another key benefit: shutters can improve thermal performance by up to 40%, with studies showing heat loss reductions of over 50%. For households, that can mean annual savings of £110 to £290.

Beautifully bespoke to fit the shape of your home
They also help soften external noise, reduce allergens and make light control more precise – all contributing to calmer, healthier living spaces. Maintenance is minimal, requiring little more than occasional dusting, and as a fixed feature, shutters can enhance resale appeal.
Just Shutters brings focused expertise, bespoke craftsmanship and consistently high customer ratings. For homeowners seeking a window solution that combines longevity, comfort and understated style, shutters are a smart and enduring choice.

Making the most of your space
SAUNA CULTURE Building Britain’s
Kernow Springs leads the way as UK sauna culture hits an all-time high.
Interest in saunas has accelerated across the UK, driven by a growing focus on preventative health and structured recovery. Kernow Springs has emerged as a significant contributor to that shift, designing and constructing timber saunas for private gardens, holiday parks, spas and event spaces. Every build is made to order, shaped around the client’s site, capacity requirements and intended use.
The company offers a wide range of forms, from Barrel and Box styles to Cube, Arch, Oval and Roundhouse designs. Some are compact two-person installations intended for domestic routines. Others are substantial commercial structures capable of hosting up to thirty-five bathers for guided sauna ritual and ceremony. One high-profile example is the award-winning Wild Wood Spa at The Park Resort, where a Kernow Springs sauna forms part of a broader thermal experience open to guests and visitors.
The renewed popularity of hot and cold immersion therapy reflects a substantial body of clinical research. Repeated exposure to high heat followed by cold water immersion has been linked to improved cardiovascular function, increased circulation and reduced inflammation. Studies also indicate potential benefits for muscular recovery after exercise, regulation of stress responses and improved
sleep quality. Regular practice encourages controlled breathing and measured rest periods, reinforcing a deliberate approach to personal wellbeing.
Kernow Springs builds its saunas in Cornwall using carefully selected timber suited to sustained high temperatures. Insulation, ventilation and stove specification are tailored for performance rather than visual effect. Clients can specify internal bench layouts, glazing options and external cladding to suit domestic or commercial settings. The result is a structure designed for frequent use, whether as part of a daily routine or a programmed spa schedule.
As sauna culture establishes firmer roots in Britain, demand continues to move beyond novelty toward informed, repeat practice. Kernow Springs responds with structures that support that commitment, providing reliable heat, durable construction and a format adaptable to changing expectations around health and leisure.
An award-winning interiors store redefining homes from Cornwall’s coast.
There is nothing hesitant about Olive Black Interiors; it is deliberately different and unashamedly bold in what it has to offer, personally guided by the discerning hand of its owner, Sam. Inside, colours, objects and textures encourage conversations that draw inspiration from a heady mix of fabrics and furnishings, inviting you to explore further.
As an award-winning home interiors and lifestyle store in the heart of Polperro, Olive Black Interiors has become a recognised stop for those seeking to devise rooms with depth and individuality. Sam describes her aim simply: “I want to help people create warm, cocooning, eclectic spaces that make for a truly beautiful and comfortable home – layered, inviting and full of personality.” That intention is very evident, manifesting itself through the Big Green shop, where paint finishes, lighting, textiles and furniture are arranged with an assured confidence.
Independent brands sit alongside specialist paints and thoughtfully sourced homeware, each item selected for its uniqueness and visual strength. “I curate pieces that sit happily together, each one chosen because
I genuinely love it myself,” Sam explains. There is a clear refusal to dilute that vision.
“I’ve learnt that when I try to appeal to everyone, the magic softens, so I always return to that instinctive place in my mind.”
The result is a space that doesn’t feel formulaic, but is ushered in by people, places and objects that have caught her attention as she wanders this world with the creative eye of a curator. It acts as a focal point and inspiration to encourage visitors to be braver in their own homes.
Polperro’s creative energy permeates the atmosphere of the shop, and in turn, the shop contributes to the village’s growing reputation as an independent retail destination. For customers furnishing a single room or rethinking an entire house, Olive Black Interiors offers something a little unexpected, asking people to make considered choices that can transform everyday living.

Resin surfaces
DONE PROPERLY
Durable resin driveways designed for modern Cornish homes.
Kerb appeal matters, but so does practicality. For homeowners looking to upgrade driveways, patios or paths, Oltco has built its reputation on delivering resin-bound surfaces that are as durable as they are considered in appearance.
As the UK’s leading specialist in the field, the company has refined a process that takes clients from initial consultation through to installation with transparency and care.
Resin-bound surfacing offers tangible advantages over traditional materials. Fully SUDS compliant, Oltco’s installations allow water to drain naturally through the surface, reducing standing water and helping to mitigate flood risk. Because the system is permeable, planning permission is not required in most cases, removing a layer of bureaucracy that can stall home improvements. The material itself is engineered to withstand loads of up to 400 tonnes per square metre, making it suitable for everything from domestic driveways to more demanding applications, without the loose chippings associated with gravel.
Safety and longevity are central to the appeal.
The anti-slip finish provides reassurance underfoot, particularly during Cornwall’s wetter months, while the smooth surface remains easy to maintain. Installations are
typically completed swiftly, minimising disruption to daily life. For households seeking a tailored finish, Oltco offers a wide range of colour blends, enabling clients to complement the character of their property rather than compromise it.
Environmental considerations are also part of the proposition. Recycle Bound, Oltco’s sustainable resin option, incorporates recycled plastics into the mix, offering a way to reduce waste without sacrificing performance. It is a practical response to growing demand for more responsible building choices.
With guarantees of up to 20 years, Oltco positions its product as a long-term investment rather than a cosmetic upgrade. For those reconsidering tired concrete, cracked paving or high-maintenance gravel, resin-bound surfacing presents a credible alternative grounded in engineering, compliance and considered design.

Spring
FORWARD
Now is the perfect time to start preparing your garden for summer.
Spring in Cornwall carries a particular energy. After months of Atlantic squalls, salt-laden winds and rain-soaked borders, gardens begin to stir with renewed intent. Evenings stretch gently into light, the sound of birds like an orchestra preparing for performance, inducing thoughts of summer – barbecues, family gatherings and quiet moments spent outdoors long after the working day is done.
But before the season gathers pace, there is a valuable window to repair and reimagine. The most successful garden transformations begin with strong foundations, and in a county so often shaped by the weather, that means starting at the boundary. A well-constructed fence offers more than privacy; it provides security and reassurance when conditions turn nasty.
Cornwall-based Gardens Made Easy has established itself as a trusted name in this field, installing storm-proof fencing systems designed specifically for the demands of the Duchy’s climate. With more than 2,500 Colourfence installations completed across Cornwall, the company’s work has been thoroughly tested. During the recent Storm Goretti, when wind speeds of up to 124mph were experienced in exposed places, these fences stood firm.
Yet a spring upgrade need not end at the perimeter. Patios, pathways and driveways
often emerge from winter looking tired or uneven, making this the ideal moment to consider resurfacing. Professionally installed resin provides a contemporary, low-maintenance solution: smooth underfoot, permeable and hard-wearing, while delivering a crisp, cohesive finish that elevates the overall appearance of a property. As City & Guildsqualified installers, the team specialises in resin surfaces that balance practicality with modern style.
For homeowners seeking an added sense of refinement, decking offers an inviting focal point. As approved installers of Millboard, Gardens Made Easy creates high-performance decking areas that replicate the look of natural timber without the ongoing upkeep. Resistant to rot and built to withstand Cornwall’s coastal conditions, it forms a durable yet elegant platform for summer living.
Invest now and relax into the brighter months with ease – secure in the knowledge that your outdoor space is resilient and beautifully finished.
A thoughtful new extension brings producers and customers closer together, championing provenance, seasonality and a shorter journey from soil to supper.
Set high on the cliffs of north Cornwall, with incredible coastal views, Boscastle
Farm Shop has firmly cemented its status as one of the region’s true food destinations. The exciting new chapter of their extension has become a resounding success, with the expanded farm shop and butchery now an integral part of the experience and a must-visit for locals and holidaymakers alike.
The extension, which more than doubled the floor space, has transformed the way visitors shop and browse, while staying true to the farm’s ethos of quality, sustainability and local sourcing. At its heart remains the butchery, a cornerstone of Boscastle Farm Shop for over a decade. Beef continues to come from the farm’s own herd of North Devon Red Ruby cattle, reared on the very cliffs visible from the café and butchered on-site, keeping food miles to an absolute minimum.
Beyond the butchery, the expanded shop floor has truly come into its own over the past year. The additional space allows local produce to be beautifully displayed and thoughtfully curated, creating a relaxed, immersive shopping experience. The deli continues to draw loyal fans with its handmade pasties, pies, quiches, cakes, scones and awardwinning Scotch eggs, all crafted in the farm’s café kitchen. Seasonal fruit and vegetables
take centre stage, reinforcing a commitment to freshness that defines the entire offering.
The café works seamlessly alongside the farm shop, showcasing local ingredients where everything is homemade with consistency and quality at the forefront.
The progression is evident in the café and tea garden for 2026, as they plan to unveil a brandnew children’s play area in its popular garden space, enhancing its appeal as a destination for families visiting the North Cornish coast. Set to replace the existing play equipment, it will be introduced in the coming weeks and forms part of the business’s continued investment in its outdoor tea garden. The addition is designed to create an improved space where children can play safely while parents relax and enjoy the café’s food and surroundings.
Twelve months after its expansion, Boscastle Farm Shop hasn’t just grown in size; it has strengthened its reputation as it continues to raise the bar for farm-to-table excellence in Cornwall, proving that thoughtful growth deepens what makes a place special.
There’s a moment in every food and drink lover’s life when they make a decision that seems perfectly reasonable at the time but turns out to be a mild financial disaster. For me, that moment arrived in the gilded reception of the Hilton on Park Lane, fresh from a PR event where I’d been thoroughly spoilt, yet somehow still not quite satisfied with the evening.
AKA Lagom Chef
The solution, obviously, was a Negroni. What arrived was a perfectly decent drink. What followed was a bill for £25. Twenty-five pounds. For one Negroni. I didn’t quite spit it across the lobby – I have some decorum –but I did immediately reach for my phone to share my outrage with the world. And the world, largely, did not care. Except for one man. Chris Jarrett, also known as The Bearded Barman, who coolly replied: “Sorry for your mistake. When you come to Cornwall, I’ll make you a better and cheaper one.” Reader, he was not wrong.
Fast forward to summer, and there I was in Cornwall, sitting at Two Beards, the popup bar Chris ran with his wife Lauren Beard. Working my way through what I can only describe as a smoky, brooding, absolutely magnificent Negroni. The kind that makes you question every drink decision you’ve made in your adult life. Chris, knowing full well my weakness for anything smoky and strong, then proceeded to dust off bottles I’d never heard of and entertain us for hours. It was the sort of evening that makes you realise that great hospitality isn’t really about the drinks at all, it’s about the person making them. I’ve stayed in touch with Chris ever since, following his journey with genuine interest. Along the way he introduced me to Knightor Vermouth, which is exceptional and deserves far more attention than it gets.
Chris is now doing something rather brilliant with his latest venture: Kona, in Falmouth. For those not already familiar with the Bearded Barman, and his equally talented other half Lauren, here’s the backstory. Chris moved to Cornwall in 2011 and fell, somewhat accidentally, into hospitality. Bartending turned out to be the perfect creative outlet, part craft, part performance, part science experiment. He’s a self-confessed drinks nerd who genuinely wants to understand why something tastes the way it does, and he will absolutely corner you at a party to explain the chemistry behind a fermentation process you didn’t know you were curious about. The thing is, he makes it fascinating rather than insufferable, which is a rare gift.
culture, design and hospitality inspiration wherever she landed. Five years in Australia introduced her to the particular magic of Aussie brunch culture, that laid-back confidence, the long tables, the sense that a morning coffee could effortlessly become an afternoon occasion. She launched a luxury picnic business in Sydney called Pretty as a Picnic, eventually bringing it back to Cornwall during lockdown, where she stepped back into hospitality through the events world. Together Chris and Lauren built Two Beards into a well-loved pop-up and consultancy, creating bars and experiences across the South West.
Lauren, meanwhile, grew up in Cornwall before heading off to travel the world, absorbing food
Then Kona happened. They didn’t find Kona, Kona found them. What began as a consultancy project became something neither of them could walk away from. The space had an energy to it, and Chris fell for the potential. The result is something genuinely special: a Bondi-inspired brunch spot by day that shifts into a vibrant cocktail bar by night. Lauren’s love of relaxed, sunsoaked hospitality and Chris’s obsession with exceptional drinks finally under one roof and with a freshly updated look to match their vision.
The food leans into the whole ethos beautifully. Their seasonal plates menu is, in their own words, essentially one giant bar snack list: Gildas, cheese and onion hash browns, smoked mackerel churros, tacos. The kind of food built for sharing, for lingering, for ordering one more round and somehow ending up staying until the evening rolls in. “We want Kona to be about shared experiences,” they say. “Long mornings drinking coffee and catching up, easy afternoons that roll into evenings with great drinks and even better conversation.” Running a venue together as a husband-andwife team with two kids is, by any measure, a lot. But they wouldn’t have it any other way. And honestly? If this is what comes from one outrageously overpriced London Negroni, I would pay the £25 all over again.

OF ROCK Spirit
From beachside beginnings to bold Cornish distilling ambitions.
Rock Distillery began, improbably enough, with a walk along Rock Beach and a dog called Blue. From that simple start has grown a Cornish drinks company of considerable range and intent. Today the distillery produces gins, rums, whiskies, vodkas, brandies and liqueurs, with retail sites in Wadebridge (PL27 7FE), Bude (EX23 8BH), Tintagel (PL34 ODA), Padstow (PL28 8AN) and Dartmouth (TQ6 9DW).
Gin remains central to the enterprise. There are ten in the collection, each made without sugar and from entirely natural ingredients. No syrups or artificial flavourings are introduced; the emphasis is on clarity of flavour and careful sourcing. The line-up runs from classic expressions to more contemporary interpretations, all designed to stand on their own merits or work confidently in a glass. A recently introduced Dry Vermouth has quickly found favour. Paired with Cornish Gold Gin, it forms a bracing Martini: two-thirds vermouth to one-third gin, stirred and finished with an olive. It is a combination that speaks of precision rather than excess.
Whiskey production has become an area of serious commitment. The first release, a three-year-old spirit distilled from single malt pale barley, is fermented and triple distilled before resting in ex-French red wine barrels.
Maturation takes place at a steady 21°C, after
which the spirit is cut with Cornish spring water. The relatively warm conditions encourage a fuller profile at a younger age. An eightyear-old expression, released at Christmas and matured in the same barrels at the same temperature, demonstrates the cumulative effect. The distillery calculates that for every fivedegree rise in temperature, maturation effectively doubles, giving this whiskey a depth associated with much older spirits. Alongside the core range sits an expanding selection of liqueurs, now numbering eleven. Peanut Whiskey has proved especially popular, served after dinner or as an apéritif with salted nuts. Brandy Snap and Lemongino offer further variety. Each shop includes a tasting station, inviting visitors to try before they buy and to discover, glass by glass, how far that first walk on the beach has travelled.

New-foundCONFIDENCE
Find the smile of your dreams with The Treatment Centre in Truro.
Confidence often comes from feeling at ease, and at The Treatment Centre, this is their number-one priority.
Tucked away in Tinners Court, just a step back from Truro’s historic streets and riverside walks, The Treatment Centre reflects the Cornish way of being; calm, considered and assured. Family-run and trusted locally for more than 40 years, the practice has become part of the city’s fabric. It is a place where people are welcomed by name, appointments are unhurried and where care is built on longstanding relationships as much as clinical skill.
Leading the team is Anna, whose restorative dentistry background brings a thoughtful, artistic eye to every smile. Patients arrive seeking something very personal, a smile that feels natural, balanced and truly their own. Through Invisalign and carefully tailored restorative treatments, Anna and her team focus on refinement rather than overhaul, always guided by what suits the individual. The experience is deliberately different. Time is taken over every conversation and multiple options are explored rather than prescribed. The setting is discreet and the atmosphere reassuring, making this a dentistry practice
that is respectful of patient comfort, allowing confidence to grow along the way.
Patients often speak of how at ease they feel throughout the journey. One describes the calm reassurance of those early conversations and the joy of seeing a long-held wish realised:
“From the first appointment with Anna, where we talked through options, to the final visit where the finishing touches made my smile the one I had always dreamed of, I felt relaxed, happy and confident.”
Another reflects on how that confidence now carries into everyday life, at social gatherings, on coastal walks, in moments captured without a second thought. “I now smile all the time and love having my photo taken. I still get a thrill seeing a straight, lovely smile and I feel so much more confident meeting new people.”
This is the essence of The Treatment Centre… dentistry that enhances how you feel, not just how you look.
