In the framework of the Mexican Petroleum Congress (CMP), Carlos Pascual, senior vice president of Geopolitics and International Affairs at S&P Global Commodity Insights, shares a prospective analysis on sustainability and energy trends.
urante la conferencia plenaria: “Necesidades indivisibles: los retos en seguridad energética, transición y asequibilidad”, Carlos Pascual señala que la seguridad energética, la sostenibilidad y la asequibilidad son el nuevo mantra. Sin embargo, aclara que aún el petróleo y el gas ocupan la mayor parte del gasto de capital, incluso cuando aumenta la inversión en bajas emisiones de carbono. Antes de entrar de lleno en su análisis, el especialista advierte que el mundo requerirá resiliencia para enfrentar una serie de retos y desafíos complejos. Desde su perspectiva, es muy complejo avanzar hacia la transición energética y la descarbonización, sin comprometer las reservas de crudo de las próximas generaciones. Es decir, hasta ahora, las principales economías industrializadas del mundo se enfrentan al “trilema” de asegurar el suministro energético asequible, sin desgastar el acceso universal a la energía y promover la protección ambiental. “La transición energética no se discute, pero aún se debe tener suficiente energía para poder cumplir con la demanda actual y futura. Es decir, que mientras las economías del mundo refuerzan sus objetivos de sostenibilidad, la energía debe seguir al alcance de la población y la industria”. El especialista sugiere que deben encontrar la manera de reducir las emisiones, sin creer que reducir el procesamiento de petróleo es la única forma de lograrlo “Un cambio que hemos visto desde el año pasado cuando empezó la guerra en Ucrania es que había un debate entre seguridad

uring the plenary lecture: “Indivisible needs: the challenges in energy security, transition and affordability”, Carlos Pascual points out that energy safety, sustainability and affordability are the new mantra. However, he clarifies that oil and gas still occupy the largest share of capital expenditure, even as low-carbon investment increases. Before entering fully into his analysis, the specialist warns that the world will require resilience to face a series of complex challenges. From his perspective, it is very complex to move towards energy transition and decarbonization without compromising the crude oil reserves of the next generations. In other words, so far, the world’s major industrialized economies face the “trilemma” of securing affordable energy supplies without undermining universal energy access and promoting environmental protection. “The energy transition is not under discussion, but there must still be enough energy to meet the current and future demand. In other words, as the world’s economies strengthen their sustainability goals, energy must remain affordable for people and industry.” The specialist suggests that they must find a way to reduce emissions, without believing that reducing oil processing is the only way to achieve this.
