Experts watched in horror as hopelessly off-guard financial markets around the world reeled and collapsed within minutes of opening, and continued to take a 12-round pummelling which only stopped at the final bell. Be under no illusions, Friday 24th June was a bloodbath, and by the close of play the pound had plunged to a 31-year low against the dollar, following sterling’s steepest daily decline since the bad old days of 1973. But what’s done is done, and what will be, will be. We could talk about the socio-economic and political implications of Brexit on the world all day, and yet there is now little more that can be done about it than just that. Talk. and turning disaster into opportunity. Even should the butterfly-effect of Brexit create a ripple sufficient to drag our still-fragile global economy back into recession, we must remember that it is still our responsibility as wealth creators to hold our nerve during difficult times. We rely on stable foundations from which to do business, which is why we, along with our peers in the financial sector, find violent, unsettling change so unnerving. But amidst the panic and hysteria, let us not forget that in this brave new world the same drivers to success still apply.

NO FURTHER RATE HIKES PLANNED AS FEDERAL RESERVE KEEPS INTEREST RATES UNCHANGED
T
he U.S. Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged on Wednesday and signaled it still planned to raise rates twice in 2016, though it said slower economic growth would crimp
the pace of monetary policy tightening in future years. The central bank’s decision to stick with its 2016 rate path, however, appeared shakier, with six of its 17 policymakers projecting just one increase this year. Only one Fed policymaker had done so when economic forecasts were last issued in March. A sharp slowdown in U.S. hiring in May had fueled doubts about the strength of the labor market going into the Fed’s twoday policy meeting. Fed Chair Janet Yellen acknowledged the need to see clear signs of economic strength before lifting rates. “We do need to make sure that there’s sufficient momentum,” Yellen told a news conference. The Fed also said the economy would grow only 2 percent this year and in 2017, 0.1 percentage point lower than previously forecast for each year. It also cut its longer-term view of the appropriate federal funds rate, its benchmark lending rate, by a quarter point to 3 percent and indicated it would be less aggressive in raising rates after the end of this year. Yellen was not clear on whether a rate increase could come at the next policy meeting in late July or whether the central bank would wait for a slew of firmer data as it headed into its September meeting.

The process of negotiating a new UK-EU trade deal will take time For the time being at least, the UK-EU economies are in the eye of a storm, and it is anticipated that the markets will continue to rally and hold firm in the short-term. It would seem that, for now at least, The Bank of England’s Mark Carney has calmed nerves by hinting at a rate cut, a fresh bout of monetary stimulus, and the relaxation of capital buffers for commercial banks. Even after article 50 is triggered, the 2-year period that follows, during which Britain will begin the fastidious, painstaking process of extricating itself from the raft of EU laws and directives it is bound to, alongside tense negotiations with its former EU partners over a new UKEU trade deal, will see Britain remain by all intents and purposes a full member of the EU. That said, negotiations will be complex and at times fast-moving, so a little market volatility is to be expected. Doubly so if, as many expect, both sides butt heads and negotiations hit a wall.

More heed must be given to Europe’s embattled working-classes Essentially, however, all of this will be for nought if the EU doesn’t come to terms with the crux of the problem which resulted in Brexit in the first-place, aka drastically improve the lot of the working-class man and woman on the street who have found themselves cast aside by forces of globalisation, and who feel frightened by immigration on a massive scale. The Brexit vote was not primarily about the EU per se. Instead, it was the manifestation of a public revolt against the post-1945 trend of ever-increasing globalisation, free trade, and border fluidity in terms of the movement of finance, goods, services, and labour; a process which has been of aggregate economic benefit to some, and yet cast others who have struggled to adapt onto the proverbial scrapheap. The outsourcing of traditional manufacturing jobs and unskilled work, when combined with increased competition for what few jobs are left from immigrants, have harmed the standard of living of tens of millions of British and EU citizens over the past decade.
Britain is in great need of strong, astute leadership over the coming months and years to steady the ship. Quite unlike what was on offer by David Cameron and Boris Johnson before they turned-tail and fled the post-Brexit mayhem, it should be added; here’s hoping that Theresa May is a safer pair of hands when she takes charge. That said, manic market swings from record losses to record rallies, a 10% dip in the value of the FTSE 250, and the drop in (an admittedly overvalued) sterling aside, Britain’s formidable economy and uncanny historical knack of rope-a-doping its way out of trouble over the past 1,000 years shouldn’t be discounted; as a nation with full centralised control of its own currency, it is arguably better equipped to deal with a Brexit-triggered recession than its peers in the Eurozone. Speaking of which, Europe will probably be fine too, albeit after some crisis or another which will likely strike in 2017. And if it’s not? Well there’s always the option to offer ourselves up as a colony to Australia, Canada, or New Zealand. Wouldn’t the irony be delicious? If things get really bad, we’ll just have to go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.
Whether by improving education, raising the minimum wage or implementing a government-funded citizen’s income, encouraging job creation via government investment into deprived communities and infrastructure projects, or all of the above, something must be done to improve people’s life prospects. If people have enough money in their pocket, people tend to be happier and less radical in their political leanings and more tolerant of immigration. Conversely, the continued trend of decline in Britain’s former industrial heartlands will see poverty and hardship increase, and lead to even greater voter anger with disastrous effect.
The coming years will be... interesting Of course, maybe old Boris was right all along. Maybe the sharper minds in the Leave camp know something the rest of us don’t. Maybe the UK and her former-EU partners can strike up a mutually beneficial arrangement that suits both sides. Maybe all the panic and hysteria of the last week has been a storm in a teacup. Everything’s going to be fine, isn’t it? Well, maybe. Perhaps. Probably? Quite frankly, splendid isolation didn’t work out particularly well for Benjamin Disraeli and his successors in the 19th and early 20th century and, if critical analysis of the present circumstances by experts is anything to go by, David Cameron’s 21st century rendition isn’t likely to see Britain fare much better. PETROGAS GAS SYSTEMS BV WWW.PETROGAS.NL 0031 182 565 395
ENERGISING THE FUTURE WRITTEN BY AMY TOCKNELL
With an impressive legacy in its field, Petrogas Gas-systems B.V. from the Netherlands has risen to the top the old fashioned way – through hard work and determination. Traditional notions of service standards and commitment continue to permeate this inspiring organisation, so Endeavour got in touch to find out more.
Endeavour Magazine | 15
PETROGAS GAS SYSTEMS BV
The 9th of April 1949 was a good day for business, as on this day
Petrogas was founded by Mr. Popovice. Petrogas started as an engineering company of small scale installations like LPG systems, town gas stations and coal gasification stations. The focus on the gas sector and the related experience and knowledge gained proved to be an ideal starting point for further expansion, accelerated by the discovery of the Slochteren Gas Fields in the Netherlands in 1955.
W
ith the discovery of these fields, The Netherlands suddenly had access to a huge supply of natural gas, but lacked the infrastructure to bring this gas to the end-user. As one of
the few local companies at that time, who possessed the knowledge and experience to engineer gas processing equipment, Petrogas became intimately involved with the development of the Dutch gas infrastructure and business was booming. Petrogas wrote many of the specifications still used by N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie today. The experience and knowledge Petrogas’ engineers gained in those early years provided the first ingredients required for the next step. Innovation. One of the earliest examples is the development of the Petrovari Mixer in the early ‘50s, of which hundreds were eventually installed worldwide. This device efficiently mixed gas and air for a burner without the need to compress the air. Another example is that Petrogas was the first party to successfully upgrade biogas to natural gas quality for injection in a gas grid in the ‘80s. The drive to develop innovative solutions is nowadays engraved in the company culture and is what sets Petrogas apart from competitors. Everyone is passionate about technology. “The heart and brains of Petrogas are a team of committed process specialists. Using our extensive experience and driven by our passion for technology, we design and deliver tailor-made processing systems that provide maximum value for our customers in the gas and energy industries. We consider our customers’ challenges as our own and we don’t step out until everything works as it should. “ That’s the key here; always be innovating, because you want to provide the best solutions to your clients.

T
he SA Protective Equipment Marketing Association (SAPEMA) had a great run, from the 60s, but as with anything, there came a point where policies needed to be updated, new relationships
needed to be made and, simply put, the organisation needed to step up and offer more to its members in an ever-changing and modern business environment. While other trade associations may have baulked at the idea of changing with the times, this was not one that was scared of a challenge, and took the task to heart with a verve rarely seen. 2002 was the year it all changed for SAPEMA, as the Annual General Meeting (AGM) revealed a desire from all parties involved to freshen up the association, on order to ensure that future challenges could be met with aplomb, while also significantly increasing the influence of the group. A few steps were taken to achieve this, most notably, new memberships were opened up, a full-time secretariat was put in place and the objectives of the association were altered, to fit with the modern world. Wasting no time at all in implementing the changes that the August 2002 AGM brought into being, by just January 2003, a new association constitution was in full effect and the current incarnation of SAPEMA was born. 2016 has also been an exciting year for SAPEMA, as Justin Goldblatt, KZN Coastal Regional Chairman, explained:

Trinidad and Tobago’s reputation as both a tropical paradise and emerging energy and finance hub precedes it. However, as is the case with many of its neighbours, high crime rates and a spate of high-profile murders in recent years have shown how, behind the crystal blue seas and endless white sand, paradise has a dark and jagged edge. investment to the tune of billions of dollars led to exponential double-digit GDP growth across the islands. Many millions were lifted out of poverty during this boom, and yet millions more remain destitute to this day. Such poverty is fertile soil for breeding violent crime, which, when combined with the absence of an effective police deterrent, has led to murder rates which rank amongst the world’s highest. To fill the security vacuum which would otherwise exist in absence of a well-resourced and well-equipped police force, private security agencies like Amalgamated Security Services Ltd. (ASSL) are called upon to provide the services that the embattled police forces of the countries it serves cannot.
INTERNATIONAL SECURITY STANDARDS AND 30-YEARS OF SUCCESS
AN EXTENSIVE PORTFOLIO OF SECURITY SERVICES A 3,000-STRONG PRESENCE This extensive portfolio of services, and the demand for them, makes doing business in the security sector a numbers game – if you’re a big player like Amalgamated Security, you effectively need a small army of well-trained staff to get the job done. Size and presence is strength, and in this respect ASSL isn’t found wanting. Amalgamated Security’s 3,000-strong security force, which is backed-up by a large of fleet of armoured vehicles and the latest crime fighting lethal and non-lethal weaponry, offers a highvisibility security presence which acts as a shield for the clients it serves, and a muscular, imposing adversary for those with criminal intent. However, in the digital era private security is no longer simply

ASSL’S STAFF: THE COMPANY’S EYES AND EARS, AND THE KEY TO ITS ONGOING SUCCESS
where staff potentially face serious threats and danger, Baur feels
Of course, as Robert Baur, Group Marketing Manager of Amalgamated Security Services, acknowledges, the company’s success wouldn’t have been possible were it not for the staff. ASSL’s emphasis on putting staff first – giving employees the rewards, incentives, equipment, training and promotion opportunities to do their job well, do it safely, and move forward – is hardwired into the business. If any evidence is needed, look no further than the fact that both the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Security Officer started their careers as entry-level security guards. Baur said: “Some of the benefits that our employees receive include life insurance, health plans, training and retraining, professional development opportunities, paid vacation and even comprehensive medical, visual and dental treatment packages.
this is essential. “This way we ensure that our officers are well-prepared to protect themselves and, by extension, our clients.” Not that ASSL has any reason to be concerned in this respect the company employs the highest number of ASIS Certified Protection Professionals (CPP) worldwide. “We spearhead the standard with CPP,” Robert continued, “and this simply means that our employees are the best of their profession.”
KEEPING OPEN LINES OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DECISION MAKERS AND THE SECURITY PERSONNEL ON THE STREET In order to avoid what is perhaps one of the greatest problems in business for senior executives and management in any industry,

international commercial transactions and, in particular, the firm’s compliance with international anti-bribery standards.”
ADAPTABILITY: THE KEY TO STAYING AHEAD OF CRIMINALS AND THE COMPETITION There is one final piece of the jigsaw – on top of the manpower, the vehicles and the hardware, however – which Robert Baur believes is the key to ASSL’s success: the is culture of adaptability and constant development which filters through the company, an ongoing drive to stay ahead of the curve. “Constant development is the only way to keep up to date with the needs of the market,” Robert said. “We have to continue updating ourselves to assure the protection of our client’s operations and assets.” This emphasis on constantly developing, constantly improving manifests itself in all areas of Amalgamated Security’s day-to-day operations and procedures. Take the company’s recent TRACE certification, for example.
PROFESSIONALISM BEYOND REPROACH The private security sector, like any other, has its rogue element – discerning international clients who are seeking security services can take one look at Amalgamated Security’s TRACE accreditation and be rest assured that they will be safe in the hands of a company whose professionalism is beyond reproach. Over the coming year, Amalgamated Security will undoubtedly continue to be present but not oppressive. Ahead of the curve, and driven to do what it takes to stay one ahead of the array of threats which threaten its clients, staff and business. “We’ll never stop finding new ways to protect our clients,” Baur told us, upon conclusion of the interview – as previous clients of ASSL would no doubt agree, we’ll take him at his word.

An urban centre’s drainage and sewerage network are the literal veins and capillaries that bring life to a city and clear away the toxins. Such networks allowed for the creation of the great ancient cities of legend, Lothal, Knossos, Rome and Athens, and make possible the increasing modern-day shift towards urbanisation. Certainly, Singapore’s own drainage and sewerage systems quietly take care of the less glamorous side of keeping the city functioning. Endeavour Magazine | 33

the world’s fifth busiest ports, and with the 8th highest GDP per capita in the world, you’d be forgiven for forgetting that what is now a rich and bustling metropolis was formerly an impoverished ex-colonial trading post, little more than 30-years ago. But for its towering glass skyline, its first-rate metro system, its botanical gardens and immaculate streets, and all the other aesthetic trappings that come with being one of the world’s leading urban centres, such grandeur can only exist because of what lies hidden beneath its streets. As with all things subtle and yet essential, the key municipal infrastructure upon which a city is built is oft, if not always overlooked. Such infrastructure is the bedrock on which civilisation is built.
PIPE JACKING AND TUNNELLING EXPERTS WITH A CENTURYLONG HERITAGE AND A GLOBAL REACH That’s where, Ed Zublin AG’s Singapore-based Pipe Jacking Division; the established first port of call for the city-state’s civic planners and local authorities, comes in. This extensive specialist expertise has now been channelled exclusively into Asia, where Zublin’s own state-of-the-art precast pipe production factory is located in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia, alongside the division’s Singapore headquarters. The AUD$275 million endeavour saw Zublin construct a 6.3km main sewer trunk serving an area of new suburb 45km north of Perth, 13 jacking shafts, which were constructed along the length of the tunnel, and 3.7km of 76” diameter ocean outfall pipeline. This project saw Zublin AG achieve a number of firsts, in that pipe jacking works were completed at a record pace, which saw the project reach completion 3-months ahead of schedule. Another came when Zublin employed a new Dual Mode Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) for the first time during the project – a tool which is perfect for tackling challenging geological conditions which are highly variable in nature.
EAST-WEST GAS PIPELINE PROJECT, GAUTAMI GODOVARI RIVER CROSSING, INDIA Similarly, Zublin’s work on the East-West Gas Pipeline Project on the Gautami Godavari river crossing in Rajahmundry, India, was also an enterprise which showcased the company’s reputation for excellence. A total length of 2.4km of tunnel, using two Dual Mode TBM’s, was completed within the space of one dry season – an impressive achievement, bearing in mind the challenges posed by the project, and the short construction schedule which Zublin had to work to. TAKING ON SINGAPORE’S CHALLENGING GEOTECHNICAL CONDITIONS He continued, “in total we constructed 9.6km of tunnel by means of two drives; the 5.6km North Tunnel and the 4km South Tunnel. The geological conditions of Singapore vary between solid rock to sand and reclaimed land. In the north conditions we encountered ranged from hard Bukit Timah Granite and mixed conditions to a short section of Old Alluvium. The South Tunnel encountered residual soil of Bukit Timah Granite to a section of Jurong Formation”. With such challenging geotechnical conditions to contend with EdZublin AG turned to a specialist TBM which was up to the task. The shield of the Queensway Tunnel TBM had an outer diameter of 4.45m, and a total length of 90m, including the attached backup system, while the cutting head was equipped with specially designed interchangeable discs able to handle the variable ground conditions. Powered by 24 thrust jacks, which thrust off a precast ling to propel the TBM forward, the TBM advanced in stages, with the aid of a hydraulic erector which extend the precast lining.

20 YEARS AT THE TOP WRITTEN BY DJAMIL BENMEHIDI
The world of business is a capricious one. It is a fickle, unpredictable place where defeat can be snatched from the jaws of victory in the blink of an eye. And certainly, as far as mergers and jointventures go, there is a particularly sizable element of risk involved. Endeavour Magazine | 47

It would be fair to say that in NH International Caribbean’s case,
however - the product of a 1995 joint venture partnership between UK-based Norwest Holst International, now VINCI PLC, and Trinidad & Tobago-based Emile Elias & Co. fact that it has time-and-again been the contractor of choice for major clients and the highest-profile builds across 12 countries? As its portfolio demonstrates, NHIC has the capacity to take on projects of all sizes, ranging from smaller builds in the region of US$10million to the big, high-profile projects in excess of US$100million plus. Historically, NHIC has built its reputation as a go-to lead contractor for numerous civil engineering projects, such as highways, stadiums, government facilities, and utilities facilities, but in recent years it has shifted its focus away from large-scale government funded works in favour of lucrative commercial and residential clients.

Aside from its recent work on the residential development in Princess Town, over the past 2-years NH International has also been the key contractor for a number of prestige hotel builds. The company’s recent completion of the Freedom Bay Phase-1 project in St. Lucia - a luxury resort beneath the picturesque Piton Mountains in the country’s southwest, for which it won its most recent TTCA award - reflects this, as does its ongoing work on the 573-room Royalton St. Lucia hotel. Presently, the jewel in the crown for NHIC has been its appointment as the structural contractor for the Cabrits Resort Kempinski Dominica, a new 160room luxury hotel which is being constructed on the beautiful island of Dominica. Kempinski’s well-regarded luxury brand is well known by the world’s wealthiest, most discerning clientele and NHIC’s selection by Kempinski could well herald the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship between the two companies, should Kempinski opt to expand further into the Caribbean market.

AN EXCITING AND FRUITFUL PARTNERSHIP IN THE MAKING Kempinski’s Vice Chairman of Range Developments, Mohammed Asaria, gave a glowing endorsement of NH International’s appointment, when he said: “NH International’s proficiency and accomplishments leave us no doubt that the construction of the development will be in accordance with the highest standards of quality and best international practices. THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LIFE WRITTEN BY AMY TOCKNELL
In a world where economic turbulence is consistently hitting every feasible industry and felling established giants in one motion, when you come across an organisation that has stood strong and proud for in excess of 50 years, it is something to be applauded. That’s what happened when we encountered Micheletti & Co. Ltd. Endeavour Magazine | 55
MICHELETTI & CO LTD
Endeavour Magazine leapt at the chance to speak

R
ight off the bat, we think we’ve identified what makes Micheletti so special; they offer the complete package that consumers are looking for. No longer do clients have to
outsource design stages or offer the following construction up for tender, as now, Micheletti offers a one-stop all inclusive package that sees clients supported and nurtured from initial enquiry all the way through to completed build. That takes project management to a whole new level and one that competitors simply can’t compete with. Speaking about this all-in approach, Micheletti reveals that, “We
PLAN all aspect of our clients’ projects, conducting
feasibility studies and impact analysis covering technical, logistical, legal, environmental and financial considerations. We

solutions and combine them with tried and tested technologies to achieve an optimal result. We
BUILD”
You can’t say any fairer than that, but we can imagine that being able to place full and unadulterated trust in one company to manage and complete a project must be something of a rare luxury that is worth its weight in gold. So how did such a client orientated operation come into being? “The company was founded in Ghana in 1955 by F. Micheletti, an Italian. In 1963, the company was incorporated as Micheletti &
56 | Endeavour Magazine
Co. Ltd. In 2004, Micheletti & Co. Limited was reborn under new shareholders and management. As a result of the new ownership, the company is now part of a broader group of companies engaged in civil engineering, construction and construction products and estate development. This link, provided by the new ownership, offers significant benefits to both the company and potential clients through strategic alliance. As a brand, the name Micheletti has been maintained for more than 50 years of the company’s existence.” With little in the way of diversification of interests and specialities, it becomes clear that we are looking at an operation that knows what it’s good at and doesn’t want to dilute the talent pool. So when Micheletti says it has been “building Ghana since 1955”, it really means it and is, perhaps, still being a little modest. As you might expect, with such a straight talking and integritydriven company, Micheletti has little in the way of extraneous desires and they have kept both their vision and mission very simple. Don’t confuse this with being easy to achieve though, as they are aiming to be the every best of the best: they simply don’t dress that intention up in fancy jargon or confusing, deliberately ambiguous language.

The company’s acquisition of sugar producers and refineries, and multi-million dollar investments into petrochemical facilities, amongst other things, are well documented. WILMAR’S EXTENSIVE OPERATIONS IN THE PALM OIL HEARTLANDS OF INDONESIA AND MALAYSIA The company’s corporate headquarters might well be based in the financial hub that is Singapore, but Wilmar’s factory floor palm oil production operations are still near-exclusively based in Indonesia and Malaysia – countries which account for 85-90% of global palm oil production. In addition to the large number of plantations dedicated to producing oil palm crop, the business has an equally vast array of palm oil mills for fruit processing it into palm oil and palm kernels. This infrastructure, while spread across the world, is primarily based in the oil palm heartland of South-East Asia. “Our palm oil plantations are strategically located in various regions of Malaysia and Indonesia where the climatic conditions are suitable for planting oil palms,” Jeremy Goon – Chief Sustainability Officer at Wilmar International – told us.

LINCOLN MINERALS WWW.LINCOLNMINERALS.COM.AU (613) 9600 0782
AT THE FRONT OF A 21ST CENTURY GOLD RUSH WRITTEN BY DJAMIL BENMEHIDI
If you know little about the mineral graphite, you’re in good company. To the untrained eye, this seemingly staid mineral is entirely unremarkable. However, those in the industries that rely on graphite, along with financiers who are looking for the next big thing, and, of course, the mining companies that are tasked with finding and then extracting graphite from the earth know better. Graphite is the future, much like oil was over a century ago, and, like its predecessor, is fullydeserving of its moniker as a latter-day ‘black gold’. Endeavour Magazine | 73
LINCOLN MINERALS
In a decimated commodities sector which continues to wrestle with its very own Great Depression, it is daring junior miners like Lincoln Minerals who are leading the line, rather than the risk-averse industry heavyweights. And be rest assured, the potential rewards on offer are immeasurable. Endeavour Magazine sat down with Lincoln Minerals Managing Director, Dr. John Parker, to get the story on his business, and the rise of the ‘black gold’ of the modern age.
G
raphite, a naturally formed carbon-polymer with a twodimensional, planar crystal structure with great natural strength, is an excellent thermal and electrical conductor.
Able to withstand temperatures in excess of 3,600°C, demand for graphite has traditionally come from the steel industry, where it is widely used in tiles to line blast furnaces and as an agent to increase the carbon content of steel, as well as in the automotive sector for use in brake linings, gaskets, and clutch materials. Demand for graphite has increased markedly in recent years, as this most useful of minerals becomes an ever more essential component in the manufacture of consumer electronics, such as smart phones, lubricants, fire retardants, and reinforced plastics, among other things. But it is graphite’s recent emergence as the key ingredient in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries, ranking even above lithium itself, which truly signals the true onset of graphite’s blue sky moment.
GRAPHITE: THE BUILDING BLOCK OF THE FUTURE Presently, lithium-ion batteries account for a third of all total global demand for graphite, but this will skyrocket over the coming decades as the roll-out of Li-ion batteries, fuel cells, and flow batteries continues apace. These are the technologies of the future; just ask Elon Musk of Tesla Motors Inc. about the company’s Nevada-based Gigafactory, which is due to enter production in 2017, and will require a supply of up to 90,000 tons of battery-
74 | Endeavour Magazine
grade graphite per year to operate; that’s equivalent to the annual production of up to nine graphite mines. Within less than a decade, large-scale fuel-cell applications could well consume more graphite than all other current uses combined. With miners in China – the source of 70-80% of the world’s graphite production - struggling to produce suitable quantities of high-grade flake graphite, the world is potentially facing a major supply headache of the mineral in the near-future. With this looming demand-supply gap in mind, the potential rewards that are on offer for up-and-coming graphite miners like Australian mining junior, Lincoln Minerals, are hard to fathom. This upcoming 21st century gold rush would undoubtedly be welcome news to a mining industry that is still gripped by a brutal commodities market downturn, the likes of which has never been seen before. Headquartered in Melbourne, Lincoln Minerals is a young Australian minerals explorer and developer, primarily focused on base metals, iron ore, and graphite exploration and project development on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia.
Endeavour Magazine | 75
LINCOLN MINERALS
A WORLD-CLASS PORTFOLIO OF PROJECTS Lincoln Minerals’ portfolio of principal graphite projects is considerable, and includes the high-profile Kookaburra Gully Project, the historic Koppio Graphite Mine, and Kookaburra Gully Extended, Pernella, and Gum Flat projects, each of which are highly prospective graphite resources or prospects. Upon first asking Lincoln Minerals Managing Director, Dr. John Parker, about the business, he said: “Our key business has been the exploration and development of mining plans for strategic deposits in areas with high potential and low sovereign risk. In time, our goal is to develop a viable and profitable long-term mining operation, and enhance shareholder value. Lincoln Minerals is looking forward to becoming a major supplier of graphite to the growing green energy market, including solar thermal power stations”. Offering an example of one of graphite’s many applications in
and milestone to ensure delivery of Lincoln’s transformation from an explorer and project developer to an emerging graphite producer, in an industry at the forefront of the growing green energy market. It is also the de-risking step-change awaited by our potential project financiers and off-take customers to now elevate mine construction financing and operating negotiations to a level where commercial transaction outcomes can be achieved”. The mining potential of the proposed Kookaburra Gully site is quite something. The flake graphite desposit, which is located 35km northwest of Port Lincoln, extends to at least 125m in depth, remains open at depth and along strike, and hosts a total Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resource of 2.2 million tonnes at a grade of 15.1% TGC. This is almost matched by the Koppio Graphite Mine, which is a second potential source on the Kookaburra Gully with an Inferred Mineral Resource of 1.85 million tonnes at a grade of 9.8% TGC.
the green energy sector, Dr. Parker continued: “Graphite is a critical component of the Solastar proposal to build a solar thermal power station at Port Augusta in South Australia. In the proposed Solastar system, a tower-mounted 10 tonne graphite solar thermal receiver is heated to 800c and used to convert water to steam, which is then used to generate electricity in a steam turbine generator. For the Port Augusta proposal, at least 1,700 graphite blocks, more than 17,000 tonnes of graphite, would be required”.
LINCOLN’S FLAGSHIP PROJECT A GLOBAL TOP-10 SITE IN TERMS OF MINERAL GRADE
DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION OF KOOKABURRA GULLY MINE SET TO BEGIN IN 2017 Now that Lincoln’s planned US$40 million graphite mine on the Kookaburra Gully project has received its first key approval, the company can now proceed with its final Program for Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation, the final step in obtaining Government approval. Development and construction is due to begin on the mine in mid-2017, with production planned for later in 2017. The project will include an open-cut mine and a processing plant

a global top-10 site, in terms of resource grading. This news was well-received, if not entirely surprising; the Eyre Peninsula, where Kookaburra Gully is based, has long had a well-earned reputation for being a world-class producer of flake graphite. Upon being formally granted a Mineral Lease for the Kookaburra Gully project just this month, Lincoln Minerals Chairman, Yubo Jin, stated: “Our company is exceptionally pleased to have achieved this landmark step in the permitting process for the Kookaburra Gully graphite project. Kookaburra Gully is Australia’s highest-grade flake graphite deposit”.
CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OVER THE COMING 12-MONTHS When asked if he foresees any challenges for Lincoln Minerals or the wider graphite mining sector, Dr. Parker is confident. He told us: “The graphite business is steadily growing but we do potentially face challenges from large mine developments in East Africa. However, the combination of very low sovereign risk in Australia, along with our strong Chinese investor support gives us a definite strategic advantage. We are also well-advanced in the development cycle, and

raised AUD$3.2 million in capital, which demonstrates the ongoing support of our key investors”. The 12-months ahead will represent a big year for Lincoln Minerals, as it works towards to the day when the Kookaburra Gully mine is ready to enter production. There is still work to do, however, before Lincoln Minerals can get to work. Dr. Parker concluded by saying: “Lincoln’s principle goal for the next 9-12 months is to complete and get approval for a Program for Environmental Protection and Rehabilitation (PEPR) for the Kookaburra Gully Graphite Project. This is the final step in the Government approval process, and when approved would give Lincoln the go ahead to develop the proposed graphite mine and processing plant. Concurrently, Lincoln will be undertaking ongoing metallurgical and pilot plant test work both in Australia and in China to identify potential markets/customers and establish binding off-take agreements. We are also planning ongoing exploration for copper and other base or precious metals on priority exploration targets”. So, busy times lie ahead for this most promising and ambitious of mining juniors. You could do worse than invest in Lincoln Minerals now; it is a name which we will very much be watching.

Asian biscuit market is booming. More hungry consumers means more opportunity for the dynamic producers who can satisfy this increased demand for tasty, high-quality products. The market is there for the taking, in other words, and Shoon Fatt, one of Malaysia’s oldest and best loved biscuit and confectionary manufacturers, has taken expansive measures in recent years to take its own operations and production facilities to the next level, whilst continuing to satisfy the demands of customers old and new, and stay ahead of the competition.
A WELL-LOVED AND MUCH-LOVED PRODUCER WITH OVER 50-YEARS OF SUCCESS Mr. Loo told us: “We have made a huge effort over the last 10-years to improve the way we do business, improve our fantastic products, and to give customers what they want: a product which tastes delicious, and which meets all international safety standards on quality and safety.” He continued: “Shoon Fatt is one of the oldest, most trusted biscuit and confectionary producers in the country. We can more than match our international rivals in terms of taste and quality – no-one ever thought a small provincial town like Teluk Intan could be home to such a quality producer! As a specialist producer of corn crackers, cookies, wafer rolls, and sandwich biscuits which it sells to a loyal customer-base, at home and abroad, Shoon Fatt has a portfolio of sweet treat products to satisfy all tastes. AN EXPORTER OF HIGH-QUALITY BISCUITS AND CONFECTIONARY TO MORE THAN 30-COUNTRIES Today, the spread of countries which Shoon Fatt exports its biscuits and confectionary to includes Singapore, Bahrain, Brunei, Cambodia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea , India, Ghana, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, the Maldives, Mauritius, New Zealand, Nigeria, Vietnam, the US, and a number of countries across the Middle East. If you reside in one of these thirty or so countries, the Shoon Fatt, SF, and Vidory brands will likely be known to you. Certainly, you yourself may have found yourself snacking on the group’s selection of delicious biscuits, cookies, crackers, baked potato snacks, sandwiches or wafer rolls at some stage or another. So lucrative has Shoon Fatt’s expansion into international markets been over the last 20-years that the group now generates in excess of 30% of turnover from international sales. Shoon Fatt’s journey to the top hasn’t been without its challenges, however. As a company which caters to the low to middle-income markets, Shoon Fatt has over 50-years come to dominate the field. However, for all its continuous growth, rising operational costs have resulted in increasingly narrow profit margins for the business, which has thus far avoided passing on these increased costs to the customer.

Consumers all over the world are increasingly demanding high quality products at low cost. Depending on the product type, the delicious bakery products produced on the world market today require different methods of heat transfer and moisture addition. The large range of ovens, comprising convection ovens, directly fired gas ovens, radiation ovens and hybrid ovens, meet the requirements for the most sophisticated baking profiles. Even and reliable baking of the products is primarily obtained through an extreme precise control of the moisture, the airflows and the heat distribution inside the oven. This precise control also makes the ovens flexible as well as the combination of different oven types.
