Mazowsze Ensemble reserves the right to make amendments to the concert program.
Over the last seven decades, Mazowsze has performed on every continent except Antarctica, undertaking nearly three hundred concert tours and appearing in over fifty countries. The Ensemble embarked on its first overseas tour in 1951, just a couple of years after its formation, performing in the USSR, China, and Mongolia in quick succession. In 1954, the group headed west, and its triumphant Paris debut opened the doors to the world’s greatest stages. Shortly thereafter, the Ensemble crossed the Atlantic to North America. As its reputation grew, the name “Mazowsze” became synonymous with Polish culture and, for Poles living abroad, a vibrant and sentimental reminder of their native land.
Public acclaim quickly led to international media attention and invitations from radio and television networks. Mazowsze’s albums were produced by major record labels in the U.S., Japan, Mexico, and France, and the Ensemble has appeared in numerous feature films and documentaries. Two of these won awards at the International Folk Film Festival in Rio de Janeiro, while more recently, Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cold War was nominated for three Academy Awards.
To honor international audiences, Mazowsze developed a tradition of preparing songs native to the host country for its performances abroad. As a result, the Ensemble’s repertoire now includes around one hundred foreign-language songs. Its artistic achievements and enthusiastic international press reviews have earned Mazowsze a reputation as one of the finest ambassadors of Polish culture.
Jacek Boniecki, conductor
Mazowsze Ensemble’s Director and Principal Conductor, Jacek Boniecki, began his music education at the Feliks Nowowiejski Music School in Gdańsk, starting to conduct at the age of 14 in amateur vocal and instrumental groups. He is a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Music where he studied conducting with Prof. Bogusław Madey. He began his career as assistant and conductor at the Baltic Opera in Gdańsk and the Musical Theatre in Gdynia. His subsequent posts included Musical Director of the “Roma” Musical Theatre in Warsaw and General and Artistic Director of the Płock Symphony Orchestra and the Musical Theatre in Lublin. He has been associated with Mazowsze National Folk Song and Dance Ensemble since 2012.
Jacek has conducted widely on the operatic stage – leading productions of Georges Bizet’s Carmen (with Jerzy Maksymiuk), Verdi’s Aida, Traviata, Nabucco and Falstaff, John Kander’s Cabaret (dir. Jerzy Stuhr), Stanisław Moniuszko’s Haunted Manor and Jan Stefani’s Cud mniemany, czyli Krakowiacy i Górale (dir. Andrzej Strzelecki), most known operettas, and ballets including Léo Delibes’ Coppélia and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. He has led a number of concerts at Warsaw’s Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera, including those featuring eminent polish jazz artists Urszula Dudziak, Michał Urbaniak, Wojciech Karolak and Marcin Pospieszalski. He regularly conducts Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass.
Jacek is recipient of the City of Lublin Artistic Award (2011), the title of “Cultural Ambassador for Lublin and the Lublin region” (2018), the Medal commemorating the 700th Anniversary of the City of Lublin, an honorary distinction which is awarded to individuals who have contributed
in an outstanding manner to the development of the city (2018). In 2017, he received the Order of Merit for Polish Culture from the Minister for Culture and National Heritage and in March 2019, the Gold Medal of the Polish Success Academy for longstanding promotion of Polish culture in Poland and abroad. In 2021, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta from the President of Poland.
Krystian studied piano at the Fryderyk Chopin State Music School in Będzin and continued his education in the double bass class at the 1st and 2nd degree State Music School in Bytom. He received his Master of Arts from the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, also as a student of the double bass.
As a double bass player he has worked with orchestras such as Sinfonia Viva, Concerto Avenna, Warsaw Camerata and the Polish Radio Orchestra in Warsaw. He has also worked as a musician and arranger with the Ester Rachel and Ida Kamińska Jewish Theatre in Warsaw.
In 2010, Krystian composed the music to Hans Christian Andersen’s The Nightingale for the Baj Pomorski Theatre in Toruń. He has worked with Mazowsze Ensemble since 2008 as a pianist and musical arranger, and currently holds the position of Assistant Musical Director.
Zofia has a PhD in the field of musical arts, rhythm and dance. She is a graduate of the Department of Dance at the Chopin University of Music in
Warsaw, specialising in choreography and dance technique, and the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz University of Music in Łódź, where she studied Artistic Education in the field of the Musical Arts. She holds a teaching qualification from the University of Music in Łódź.
A longstanding soloist, teacher, and assistant to the Head of Ballet at the Stanisław Hadyna Song and Dance Ensemble “Śląsk” as well as the Artistic Lead of its Artistic Summer School, Zofia has also taught Polish folk dance, national dance and character dance at the Silesian Centre for Regional Education in Koszęcin and the Ludomir Różycki Ballet School in Bytom. She has authored, directed and choreographed productions inspired by Polish folklore, as well as international student folk festivals, artistic projects and workshops at home and abroad–in Lithuania, France, Hungary, the USA and Japan and is longstanding folklore consultant to the International Scouting Festival of School Youth Culture in Kielce. She has worked with many acclaimed artists and choreographers, including Stanisław Hadyna, Elwira Kamińska, Hanna Chojnacka, Zofia Rudnicka, Romana Agnel, Conrad Drzewiecki, Witold Borkowski, Juraj Kubanka, Władysław Stefanik, Michał Jarczyk, Witold Gruza, Henryk Konwiński and Wiesław Dudek. For 250 years, America’s story has been told through the voices of its artists, the rhythm of its music, the words of its writers, and the movement of its dancers. It is a story of resilience and reinvention, of dreams daring enough to redefine what was possible, and of creativity that has not only shaped a nation, but the world.
As the nation marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Center invites Americans everywhere to take part in 250 Years of US, a yearlong exploration of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’re going. Through music, theater, dance, and visual art, 250 Years of US celebrates the boundless imagination of a people united by creativity.

Patrons share their first experiences at the Center.

Louisa and Savanah
My daughter Louisa went to her first Center performance in January 2024 at age five. It was a mother-daughter date with her friend Eliza and Eliza’s mom Joy. The girls both dressed as Elsa, and it happened to be a snowy day in D.C. The magic of Frozen, along with the wonder created by the atmosphere made for an unforgettable first experience!
I remember the first time I saw the Center. It was a tapestry of rainbow lights, holding its own in the vast D.C. skyline. I gaped as my mom drove us right up next to it. It was big, but somehow more welcoming than intimidating.
The grand hall led into yet another equally grand one, where I felt as if I were walking the red carpet, with imported
crystal chandeliers far overhead. I thought that this in and of itself was magical, but the real magic was inside the theater. I whipped out my phone to take a picture of the illuminated ceiling, but as soon as the lights dimmed and the show started, I forgot phones existed. My mom and I were there to see & Juliet, and we were blown away by the acting, music, and lights that went into the production. At the end, my face hurt from smiling and my hands hurt from clapping, and it was worth it.
My family and I came to see The Princess Bride in Concert with the National Symphony Orchestra. Both of our boys play viola, and The Princess Bride is a very loved movie in our family so it was meant to be…
The best thing is, I have a service dog, Eugene, and we were welcomed without issue. The kindness started when I first emailed to see what seating was like to make sure that Eugene would fit under the chair. In the response to my email, I received kindness, dimensions, photos, and was asked to reach out to book my seats if I needed any assistance.
Overall, I was highly impressed with the hospitality of this venue. 10/10 will be attending another event!
As I watched the curtain rise on the opening night of the Stuttgart Ballet’s performance of Onegin, I felt a great sense of excitement swell within me. The sheer beauty of the dancers, sets, and costumes was almost overwhelming and reminded me that beauty truly is something objective, because that is the best way to describe this ballet: beautiful.
Following the bows, I could not get Onegin out of my head; something about it was so magnetic and hypnotic that I ended up returning twice more to witness the spectacle. Each night I sat in a different location around the Opera House, giving me a unique experience each performance, and each night, I picked up on new details and nuances that I had not been keen enough to see before.
While it would be impossible to name one scene as my favorite, the finale was so gut-wrenching and emotional that I will never forget what true passion looks like.
