One of the many joys of our great city is the enthusiastic appetite for collaboration among the artistic community. What a gift for two of Atlanta’s major arts organizations to join forces once more.

After testing the waters with The Shining a couple of seasons ago, the three of us gathered together to dream about the next collaboration between the Alliance Theatre and The Atlanta Opera. And dream we did.

We started with a simple question: what could we do better together than either organization could do alone? We then followed that with an even simpler question: what are your three favorite musicals of all time? We never got to numbers two or three. As soon as we each proclaimed Fiddler on the Roof as unequivocally our top choice, the conversation quickly shifted to celebrating the many wonders of the show. And celebrate we did.

Over a shared meal and an energized conversation about our history with this musical. What we discovered was despite our varied backgrounds, each of us had a deeply personal connection to this story. That led us to lift up the many paradoxes inherent in this show—paradoxes that reveal fundamental truths about our humanity.

First, there’s the widely understood paradox that the more specific the story, the more universal it becomes. While this story follows a very particular Jewish family, the specificity of the storytelling generously invites all of us to consider our

own relationships with our families, our communities, and our beliefs. It’s why this musical has been performed somewhere in the world every day since it first premiered over 60 years ago.

The second paradox that Fiddler reminds us of is that joy and sorrow are often proximate. This is simultaneously one of the most joyful and one of the most heartbreaking musicals ever written. It’s fueled by the tragedy of the pogrom, and at the same time, celebrates the boundless love and resiliency of a family and a community more potently than any musical before or since.

The last paradox we discovered is that while Fiddler is rooted in a specific time, it is timeless. Written six decades ago, set six decades before that, it still feels startlingly urgent today. The music is woven into our cultural fabric—from original cast albums to jazz interpretations to wedding dance floors—because transcendent music and eternal truths never go out of style.

Neither does full-hearted collaboration. We hope this is just the next chapter in a tradition we’ll continue to write—together.

“Forget about what you are escaping from, reserve your anxiety for what you are escaping to.” — Michael Chabon, “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay”

The universal power of storytelling is perfectly encapsulated in this quote from Chabon’s Pulitzer Prizewinning novel. In the documentary “Miracle of Miracles,” a Japanese theatre manager tells Joseph Stein, “I cannot believe how Japanese Fiddler on the Roof is.” That simple remark captures why stories—and especially theatre— speak to us across time: they allow people everywhere to see themselves reflected, no matter their background. Fiddler on the Roof can be understood through three expanding circles of experience, all of them overshadowed by the great arbiter-time. It begins with the smallest circle: a single family. At its heart, it’s the story of a father, deeply afraid of losing his daughters and his place as the head of the family. Anyone who has been a parent, or has had a parent, knows that primal fear. Time inevitably separates us from the ones we love.

The story expands beyond the family to encompass the wider community of Anatevka—a community built by immigrants, by outsiders. A place where everyone is grappling with tradition and change-the delicate balance between adapting to the world and holding on to a shared identity. These are not uniquely Jewish experiences; they resonate as fundamentally human. For immigrants and outsiders, stability is always uncertain. What feels familiar and safe can be upended overnight by sweeping changes in government or policy. Anatevka’s community exists at the mercy of outside political forces. A single decree or shift in leadership can render an entire way of life precarious, exposing just how vulnerable even the most tightly knit communities are to forces beyond their control.

The narrative then widens as Fiddler explores the experience of displacement: a people without a permanent home, forced to rebuild their lives again and again. With each generation, they find themselves at new crossroads, only to be uprooted again. Living on borrowed time, they are always at risk of being seen as “the other,” cast as villains. This cycle is sadly familiar to many groups throughout history.

Theatre teaches a timeless lesson: to reach universality, a story must be deeply specific. Generalities rarely move us; it’s in the details that we see ourselves most clearly. Fiddler on the Roof is an unabashedly Jewish story, rich with rituals and traditions—Shabbat dinners, wedding dances, prayer shawls. Yet the emotional truth emerges precisely because of that specificity. The pain, hope, and joy of Tevye’s family are instantly recognizable to anyone who has ever loved, lost, or longed for a better future.

As Chabon reminds us, what matters is not only what we leave behind but also how we face what lies ahead. It is true

PHOTO: THE SINTOSES

for Anatevka as its people are forced to leave their home. The journey isn’t finished; those who emigrate to America build new lives through hardship and hope. Some arrive in Israel, where every achievement is shadowed by ongoing uncertainty. The most unfortunate, left behind in Europe, confronted even greater horrors as history unfolded.

Yet, even in the face of such difficulty, there is another side to this story. Survivors have always found ways to carry on. Jewish families, generation after generation, rely on two crucial strategies for living: embracing family as the central source of strength, and using humor as a lifeline through adversity. That resilient humor is woven through every scene of Fiddler on the Roof, giving warmth, comfort, and the ability to persevere.

There are many circles within Fiddler: the family unit, the vibrant town, the traditions of an entire people. These are constantly challenged by forces from without, each questioning what it means to belong and how to hold onto identity. Across all these circles—family, community, peoplehood—what unites the experience is the fleeting nature of time. Everything in life is temporary, it may all end any minute now. Yet it is laughter, warmth, and resilience that make this story both universal and deeply personal.

Winner of nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, Fiddler on the Roof is the brainchild of Broadway legends, Jerome Robbins and Harold Prince; songwriters, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick; and bookwriter, Joseph Stein. Touching audiences worldwide with its humor, warmth and honesty, this universal show is a staple of the musical theatre canon.

Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor milkman, and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof’s universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness. With iconic and beloved songs such as “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” Fiddler on the Roof is the perfect mix of humor and heart.

JOSEPH STEIN BOOK

Joseph Stein won the Tony Award and Drama Critics Circle Award for Fiddler on the Roof. His other musicals include Zorba (Tony nomination, Drama Critics Circle Award); Rags (Tony nomination); The Baker’s Wife (Olivier Award nomination, London); Take Me Along (Tony nomination); Juno; Irene (starring Debbie Reynolds); The King of Hearts; All About Us; and Enter Laughing: The Musical (Lucille Lortel nomination, outstanding revival). He also co-authored, with Alan Jay Lerner, Carmelina; and with Will Glickman, Mr. Wonderful (starring Sammy Davis, Jr.), The Body Beautiful, and Plain and Fancy. His plays are Enter Laughing, Before the Dawn, and Mrs. Gibbons’ Boys. Stein grew up in the Bronx and first became a social worker while pursuing writing on the side. He began his career in TV and radio, writing for “The Sid Caesar Show,” “Your Show of Shows,” “Henry Morgan Show,” and many others, and for personalities including Tallulah Bankhead, Phil Silvers, Jackie Gleason and Zero Mostel. On Broadway he made his debut contributing to the theatrical revues Lend an Ear (featuring Carol Channing) and Alive and Kicking. He wrote the screenplays of Enter Laughing and Fiddler on the Roof, for which he won the Screen Writers Guild Award. In 2008, he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame. Joseph Stein passed away in 2010.

JERRY BOCK MUSIC

Jerry Bock was born in New Haven, Connecticut on November 23rd, 1928. That was his first out-of-town tryout. Thirty years later, he and Sheldon Harnick gave birth to The Body Beautiful in Philadelphia. That was his fourth out-of-town tryout. In between was Catch a Star, a fleeting revue that, according to critic Walter Kerr, posed the question; “What do you call something between a flop and a smash?” Kerr’s answer? “A flash”. Next, Jule Styne and Tommy Valano midwifed Bock, Larry Holofcener and George Weiss into birthing Mr. Wonderful starring Sammy Davis Jr. The title song and “Too Close For Comfort” are still active offspring. Bock and Harnick’s celebrated collaboration yielded five scores in seven years. The Body Beautiful, Fiorello! (winner of Broadway’s triple crown: The Tony Award, The New York Critics’ Circle Award and The Pulitzer Prize in drama, the fourth musical to do so). Tenderloin, She Loves Me (winner of Variety’s

poll of critics as best musical, citing Bock and Harnick as best composer and lyricist). Fiddler on the Roof (nine Tonys, notably the citation for best musical of the year), The Apple Tree and The Rothschilds. In addition to the 1989 silver anniversary production of Fiddler (from which a major excerpt was featured in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway), a highly esteemed revival of The Rothschlds enjoyed a successful run off-Broadway the following year. Since then, Bock and Harnick were triply honored by being inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame, receiving the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Spirit of American Creativity Award from the Foundation for a Creative America. But the “award” that Bock held near and dear was the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Wisconsin. It was there that he met his wife Patti, and it was there that he decided to be a composer. Mr. Bock was a member of a number of professional guilds and associations, among which the BMI Foundation, Inc. was a membership he relished. As for Patti, his wife, George, their son and Portia, their daughter, Bock confessed they were his longest running hit. Jerry Bock passed away in 2010.

SHELDON HARNICK LYRICS

Sheldon Harnick’s career began in the 1950s with songs in revues (e.g., “The Boston Beguine,” “The Merry Little Minuet”). With Jerry Bock he created a number of memorable musicals, including Fiorello! (Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize), Tenderloin, She Loves Me (Grammy), Fiddler on the Roof (Tony), The Apple Tree, and The Rothschilds (subsequently revised as Rothschild & Sons). Other collaborations: Rex (Richard Rodgers), A Christmas Carol (Michel Legrand), A Wonderful Life (Joe Raposo), The Phantom Tollbooth (Arnold Black, Norton Juster), and The Audition (Marvin Hamlisch). He wrote three musicals himself: Dragons, A Doctor in Spite of Himself, and Malpractice Makes Perfect. Sheldon Harnick passed away in 2023.

JEROME ROBBINS ORIGINAL PRODUCTION DIRECTION & CHOREOGRAPHY

Jerome Robbins is worldrenowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets as well as his work as a director and choreographer in theater, movies and television. Although he began as a modern dancer, his start on

Broadway was as a chorus dancer before joining the corps de ballet of American Ballet Theatre in 1939, where he went on to dance principal roles in the works of Fokine, Tudor, Massine, Balanchine, Lichine, and de Mille. His first ballet, Fancy Free (1944) for ABT, still in many repertoires, celebrated its fiftieth birthday on April 18, 1994. While embarking on his career in the theater, Mr. Robbins simultaneously created ballets for New York City Ballet, which he joined in 1949, and became an Associate Artistic Director with George Balanchine. Mr. Robbins has directed for television and film as well, with his codirection and choreography of West Side Story winning him two Academy Awards. After his Broadway triumph with Fiddler On the Roof in 1964, Mr. Robbins continued creating ballets for New York City Ballet. He shared the position of Ballet-Master-in-Chief with Peter Martins until 1989. He has created more than 60 ballets, including Afternoon of a Faun (1953), The Concert (1956), Les Noces (1965), Dances At a Gathering (1969), In the Night (1970), In G Major (1975), Other Dances (1976), Glass Pieces (1983), and Ives Songs (1989) which are in the repertories of the New York City Ballet, the Ballet de l’Opera de Paris and major dance companies throughout the world. His most recent ballets include A Suite of Dances with Mikhail Baryshnikov (1994), 2 & 3 Part Inventions (1994), West Side Story Suite (1995), and Brandenburg (1996) all of which premiered at New York City Ballet. In addition to his two Academy Awards, Mr. Robbins’s awards and citations include four Tony Awards, five Donaldson Awards, two Emmy Awards, the Screen Directors’ Guild Award and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. Mr. Robbins is a 1981 Kennedy Center Honors Recipient, was awarded the Commandeur de L’Order des Arts et des Lettres, is an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and was awarded a National Medal of Arts as well as the Governor’s Arts Awards by the New York State Council on the Arts. Some of his Broadway shows include On the Town, Billion Dollar Baby, High Button Shoes, West Side Story, The King and I, Gypsy, Peter Pan, Miss Liberty, Call Me Madam, and Fiddler on the Roof. In 1989, Jerome Robbins’s Broadway won six Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director. He was most recently awarded the French Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur. Jerome Robbins passed away in 1998.

Alliance Theatre Sets Wonder Free.

And what delights during performances ignites a brighter future. You can invest in better tomorrows by supporting access for youth to experience world-class theatre on a stage that’s all their own. Now is the time.

Introducing The Goizueta Stage For Youth And Families,

a transformative new space designed to inspire young audiences year-round. Research shows that early access to live theater can significantly combat critical issues like low literacy rates and the urgent youth mental health crisis. To fulfill this promise, the Alliance Theatre is launching a $10 million Imagine Endowment to expand our capacity to serve more young people and sustain these enriching experiences in perpetuity. With this endowment, the Goizueta Stage will be a beacon of accessibility, welcoming children from all backgrounds and removing economic, geographic, and physical barriers to ensure that every child can engage with the magic of theatre for generations to come.

His visionary leadership is the subject of a Harvard Business School case study, underscoring his influence on the future of the art form. In 2023, Zvulun launched Atlanta’s historic presentation of Wagner’s Ring cycle—the first ever staged in the Southeast and the first complete production mounted in the U.S. since the pandemic—cementing the company’s reputation for artistic ambition. He also created the Discoveries series and founded The Atlanta Opera Film Studio, expanding the company’s reach through immersive productions and cinematic operas streamed worldwide. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zvulun reimagined performance models with innovative outdoor productions and digital programming that drew international attention and set a new standard for resilience in the arts. A champion of new works, he has commissioned and directed numerous world premieres while personally directing more than thirty productions for Atlanta, ranging from classics like La bohème and Salome to contemporary American operas. THE ATLANTA OPERA MANAGING DIRECTOR

Micah Fortson is the managing director of The Atlanta Opera, a role he has held since 2017. In this position, he helps steer the company’s artistic vision while overseeing its day-to-day operations, bringing a mix of backstage know-how, legal experience, and creative problem-solving to the job. His leadership has supported The Atlanta Opera through a period of remarkable expansion, with bold productions, deeper ties to the community, and a reputation as one of the most adventurous opera companies in the nation. Micah began his career in the theater as a stage manager, spending a decade backstage at productions ranging from musicals to opera. His work brought him to companies including Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, New Orleans Opera, and San Francisco Opera, where he built a foundation in stagecraft, collaboration, and the art of live performance. After Hurricane Katrina, Micah took on an entirely different challenge, managing the debris removal program for St. Tammany Parish in Louisiana. That experience, coupled with his interest in problem-solving and advocacy, led him to earn his law degree. He practiced general and commercial litigation in Houston, Texas, for eight years, sharpening his skills in negotiation, leadership, and organizational strategy. Returning to the arts in 2017, Micah brought all these experiences together at The Atlanta Opera. His backstage knowledge, public service work, and legal background inform his approach to arts leadership, helping him balance creativity with resilience and strategy. Above all, Micah is committed to opera’s power to transform lives and to building a sustainable, welcoming institution that serves artists, audiences, and the Atlanta community.

Frank Butterfield 1957-2025

With gratitude for a special gift from The Sara Giles Moore Foundation, The Atlanta Opera dedicates this production to the memory of Frank Butterfield.

Frank Butterfield joined The Atlanta Opera Board of Directors in 2019, representing his company, Homrich Berg, in Atlanta. Over six years, Frank grew into something he initially thought unlikely—an opera fan. He quickly earned the respect of everyone he worked with, and his candor and openness fostered friendships that went far beyond the boardroom.

Frank was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and he was the youngest of four siblings. His early years took him as far as Sumatra, Indonesia, before his family settled in Lake Katonah, New York. A lifelong runner, he started in high school track and never stopped—going on to compete in elite marathons and even helping set a world record in a Masters relay in 1999.

He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 1978 with a degree in Business Administration and quickly launched a successful career in finance. After scoring one of the top CPA exam results in the country, he spent 14 years in public accounting before joining Homrich Berg, where he became a highly respected advisor and shareholder over a more than 30-year career.

Frank was passionate about fitness, travel, reading, and service. In addition to the Opera, he held leadership roles in several nonprofits, including the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta and The Sara Giles Moore Foundation, where he joined the Board of Trustees in 2003.

He will be remembered for his sharp mind, steady dedication, sense of humor, love of cookies and cardio— and the many lives he touched with kindness and clarity.

ABOUT THE ALLIANCE THEATRE

Founded in 1968, Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. The Alliance is led by Jennings Hertz Artistic Directors Tinashe Kajese-Bolden and Christopher Moses, and Managing Director Brandon Kahn. The Alliance is a recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award® for sustained excellence in programming, education, and community engagement. In January 2019, the Alliance opened its state-of-the-art performance space, The Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre. In January 2026, the Alliance will open the new Goizueta Stage for Youth & Families on the campus of the Woodruff Arts Center to expand its programming and commitment to excellent productions for family and student audiences of all backgrounds. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 140 productions including eleven that have transferred to Broadway. The Alliance education department reaches more than 90,000

students annually through performances, classes, camps, and in-school initiatives designed to support teachers and enhance student learning. The Alliance Theatre values community, curiosity, collaboration, and excellence, and is dedicated to representing Atlanta’s diverse community with the stories we tell, the artists, staff, and leadership we employ, and audiences we serve.

OUR MISSION To expand hearts and minds onstage and off.

OUR VISION Making Atlanta more connected, curious, and compassionate through theatre and arts education.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

In the sincerest efforts to gain further understanding of the history that has brought us to reside on this land and to accept the knowledge that colonialism is a current and ongoing process under which we need to build our mindfulness of our present participation, we hereby acknowledge this native land of the Muscogee Creek Nation.

Celebrating our supporters who have made a legacy gift to the Alliance Theatre.

The Legacy Society celebrates individuals who have made a planned gift to the Alliance Theatre. Making a planned gift is a wonderful way to show your support and appreciation for the Alliance Theatre and its mission, while accommodating your financial, estate planning and philanthropic goals. With smart planning, you may increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs. Just as important, you will know that you have made a meaningful and lasting contribution to the Alliance Theatre.

To learn more about the Legacy Society, please contact Lindsay Ridgeway-Baierl at lindsay.ridgeway-baierl@alliancetheatre.org.
