HOW A FOUNDING FATHER, A FRUSTRATED BIOGRAPHER, AND A SWIMMING POOL INSPIRED THE HIP-HOP HIT HAMILTON STORY BY
PETE CROATTO After earning dizzying raves and armfuls of awards, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton has gone global. How did this original account of one of America’s Founding Fathers take the stage—and the world—by storm? It’s a story involving a Bronx DJ, a frustrated historian, and a swimming pool reading session you won’t find in any history book! Though we’re not sure exactly when Alexander Hamilton was born, his effect on American history is undeniable. In a remarkably short period of time, Hamilton accomplished the following: fought in the American Revolution (where he was George Washington’s aide); led the efforts to reform the iffy Articles of Confederation; helped design the American government as outlined in the Constitution; and served as the country’s first Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton died at age 47 on July 10, 1804, one day after being shot by his rival Aaron Burr in a duel. Fast forward more than two centuries: Bronx-based DJ Kool Herc had a unique approach to the turntable. He talked over the records he spun, a trick he learned from the DJs in his native Jamaica. Kool Herc also mastered the self-described “Merry Go-Round,” using his two turntables “to switch back and forth repeatedly between two copies of the same record, extending the short drum break that the crowd most wanted to hear,” according to The History Channel. In August 1973, a big crowd was on hand to hear Kool Herc work his sister’s 18th birthday party. That’s how word of hip-hop, born at the rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the West Bronx, spread. Two decades later, Ron Chernow published his successful third book, Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller Sr., but the respected historian was experiencing mixed emotions. “I began to sense the danger of becoming stereotyped as the chronicler of American tycoons,” Chernow told the Biographers International Organization. “When I finished a lecture, people in the audience would start shouting out, ‘Do Carnegie next! Do Vanderbilt next!’ as if I would go on knocking off Gilded Age moguls for the rest of my career.” Who would be his next subject? Ultimately, Chernow decided to tackle the life of an important founding father. “Alexander Hamilton was the perfect transitional figure for my next book, because there would be financial history galore while also opening up vast new subjects for study: military history, constitutional law, foreign policy and dozens of other topics,” Chernow said. The 832-page Alexander Hamilton was not only a critical hit—Kirkus Reviews deemed the book “a model of the biographer’s art”—it became a New York Times bestseller. And for one Tony-winning musical theater writer, it became a vacation read. On a break from In the Heights, the show’s young creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, sojourned to Mexico with his future wife, Vanessa Nadal. Miranda cracked open Alexander Hamilton on an inflatable pool lounger. He was floored. “It was the fact that Hamilton wrote his way off the island [St. Croix] where he grew up,” he told Vogue. “That’s the hip-hop narrative.” The story also reminded Miranda of his father, Luis, a native of Puerto Rico who eventually became an adviser to
4 | curtaincall Mayor Ed Koch. Convinced Hamilton’s life could become a hip-hop-influenced show, Miranda scoured Google to see if it had been done before. It had not. “The idea of hip-hop being the music of the Revolution appealed to me immensely,’’ Miranda explained to T Magazine. That April, the White House invited Miranda to participate in a concert focused on “the American experience.” He used the platform to bust a four-minute rap about Hamilton’s first 20 years. The audience, which included the Obamas, were entranced. Miranda relayed to The New Yorker that “the President’s first reaction was to remark that [Treasury Secretary] Timothy Geithner had to see this.” Chernow, who eventually became Hamilton’s historical consultant, was serenaded by Miranda in his living room. “I think that’s the most astonishing thing I’ve ever heard in my life,” he said. That was true—kind of. What he performed was his only song. A year later, he’d only written one more. Miranda’s friend and In the Heights director Thomas Kail interceded: “You know, Lin, you took two years to write two songs. If we could crank it up a little, maybe we could see what we’ve got.” Six months later, Miranda performed 10 new songs at Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series. When legendary composer John Kander’s face “lit up” during the rap battles between Thomas Jefferson and Hamilton, Miranda knew his hunch was right. After years of readings, workshops and struggle—Burr is tough to write; half the songs in Act One were jettisoned—a completed first act of The Hamilton Mixtape was performed at the Vassar Reading Festival in Poughkeepsie, New York. Miranda stuck to his guns, including casting Latino and Black actors as America’s forefathers. “Our goal was: This is a story about America then, told by America now, and we want to eliminate any distance—our story should look the way our country looks,” Miranda said. “Then we found the best people to embody these parts. I think it’s a very powerful statement without having to be a statement.” With the majority of the original Off-Broadway cast in tow (Brian d’Arcy James departed to star in Something Rotten! and was succeeded by Jonathan Groff), anticipation was high as Hamilton arrived on Broadway. “It is a rare thing: not just a theatrical landmark, but a show that jolts our thinking about popular culture and casts new light on some of the most storied events in American history,” T Magazine proclaimed. Did crowds and critics agree? A very important audience member had already given the musical his seal of approval: After attending an early preview with daughters Malia and Sasha, President Obama gave the show a standing ovation. Makeup designer Craig Forrest-Thomas reveals the creation of Mrs. Doubtfire’s titular nanny. STORY BY
RUTHIE FIERBERG There is one nanny who—since 1993 —has bewitched audiences with her charm and humor. She can hip-hop, bebop, dance till she drops and yoyo make a wicked cuppa cocoa. She is Euphegenia Doubtfire, dear. Ever since actor Robin Williams hit the screen as divorced father Daniel Hillard—who disguises himself as Theodore Lowenstein (Christopher Hillard), Alanis Sophia (Lydia Hillard), Craig Allen Smith (Euphegenia Doubtfire), and Ava Rose Doty (Natalie Hillard). an English nanny Photo by Joan Marcus. in order to see his children every day—families from around the world have adored Mrs. Doubtfire. And in 2020, a musical adaptation of the famed movie hit Broadway, ingratiating another generation to the hip old granny (and satisfying the nostalgia of 1990s moviegoers). The musical adaptation first hit the road in 2023 and continues to make its way around North America. In bringing new life to Mrs. Doubtfire through song, the team behind the musical still pays homage to the original, especially in the look of its title character. Between Broadway and the launch of a West End mounting and then the North American tour, “we changed the design of the mask,” makeup designer Craig Forrest-Thomas told Broadway News. “We made it a bit thicker [and] we changed the sculpt of the mask to make it more like Robin Williams.” Forrest-Thomas and prosthetics specialist Rob Smith pored over images of Mrs. Doubtfire from the movie, freeze-framing in order to view the character’s face from every angle possible. The duo then built those references—her face shape, wrinkles and jowls—into the mask for Mrs. Doubtfire onstage. Of course, the Doubtfire mask must work with the face of the actor playing the role. “Essentially we try and get the essence of Robin, but we also have to work with [the actor’s] features,” explained Forrest-Thomas. “Say someone has maybe a pronounced nose like mine. We couldn’t really build on that because we’d have a massive nose. So it’s about working with what they’ve got and trying to get those little winks of Robin.” After all, the designer wants any actor to be able to offer their take on the role. The process of making the mask begins with a 3D scan of the actor’s head. That scan populates in a computer, where the designer can manipulate renderings to test ideas of where to build up the mask’s texture. One actor might
8 | curtaincall need their cheekbones built up, while an understudy might have fuller cheeks but need a stronger jawline. Then, “Rob will do a live sculpt of the mask, so you can see it in clay form, which is then approved or reworked if there are any notes [from the director or producers],” said Forrest-Thomas. Once that design is finalized, Smith forms a mold of the clay. That mold is used to make all future masks by pouring silicone in it and allowing the silicone to set. (It’s like the plaster process shown in the movie’s famous transformation scene.) Silicone is a tough material that not only allows each Doubtfire mask to last for a few months’ worth of performances, but its durability is also key in completing more than 10 quick-changes per show that the leading actor makes to transform between Daniel Hillard and Mrs. Doubtfire. During each quick-change into Mrs. Doubtfire, the tour’s head of makeup waits backstage, holding the mask at its thickest points (usually the neck area and top of the head). “Because it’s so quick, [the actor’s] literally diving into the mask,” Forrest-Thomas said. The mask has straps at the top that go over the actors head and secure at the back of their neck and their ears poke through ear holes for a snug fit. “You hold the top of the mask on the straps, and you really give a good old yank forward so that everything’s just sucking into place.” Those straps hide under the wig of gray granny curls. Then the lipstick goes on (a rosy Chanel hue because “I thought she was a bit of a Chanel girl,” Forrest-Thomas said), the false teeth are inserted and the glasses rest below the brow. But Forrest-Thomas’ design isn’t only about fitting an image—it must function practically. Mrs. Doubtfire sings, dances and raps. Robin Williams’ Mrs. Doubtfire voice allowed him to keep his mouth taut and small. But in a musical, actors need to be able to sing with open vowels and project to the back of the house. “The nose is cut out under the nostrils [above the mouth], and then it comes down and goes into the nasal folds so it sits perfectly” and allows for deep breathing, Forrest-Thomas described. The chin line is fairly low below the lips, leaving space for the mouth to move. That means the mask doesn’t cover 100 percent of any actor’s face; meticulous blending creates a seamless appearance between the mask and the actor’s skin that shows through. “They’ll wear a base which will match to the mask or vice versa, so that we are getting that really nice natural blend once they’re onstage, but obviously they’ve got to be Daniel as well,” Forrest-Thomas pointed out. “It’s really difficult, the dual aspect of that.” In terms of the makeup on the surface of the mask, “you want to create that lovely, pillowy pinkness—that Nana/Granny effect,” Forrest-Thomas said. “We build up the flesh tone, a bit of pink tone, and keep layering until you achieve that realness and the skin sort of comes through.” And Forrest-Thomas has a secret for achieving coloring that fits the actors he’s working with and the quintessential Doubtfire likeness. “I use the makeup palette that [makeup designer] Greg Cannom used on the Mrs. Doubtfire film,” Forrest-Thomas revealed. “It’s his makeup palette—he designed it. You can buy it online, so I managed to find it and stocked up on it.” The aesthetic link between the film and the musical iteration is one that Forrest-Thomas and the tuner’s creative team have labored over, and they know it’s worth it every time an audience reacts when they see the face that follows the famous, “Hello, poppets!” The 2026–2027 North Park Lexus Broadway in San Antonio Season begins with Mrs. Doubtfire, September 15–September 20. Jeffrey is a graduate of the University of Michigan. SANDER JACOBS (Producer) received the Tony and Olivier awards for Best Musical for Hamilton (Pulitzer Prize winner) and a Tony Award for In the Heights. JILL FURMAN (Producer) seeks to produce groundbreaking commercial work that surprises audiences. On Broadway, she is currently represented by Suffs (Tony nomination) and Hamilton (Tony Award). She received a B.A. from Brown University and an M.B.A from Columbia. She is on the Brown University Board of Directors, the President’s Advisory Council for the Arts at Brown and the Board of the Lung Cancer Research Foundation.
