WHY CO-WRITER JOHN O’FARRELL SAYS MRS. DOUBTFIRE WAS BORN TO SING STORY BY
Broadway.com Staff When British writer John O’Farrell signed on to co-write Mrs. Doubtfire for the stage, his first thought was not about prosthetic noses or fake Scottish accents. It was about making sure the show worked as a piece of theater. The musical is based on the beloved 1993 film starring Robin Williams, which itself was adapted from Anne Fine’s novel Alias Madame Doubtfire. O’Farrell has built a career on sharp, crowd-pleasing comedy, from his bestselling political memoir Things Can Only Get Better to hit novels, television scripts and even the animated film Chicken Run. Onstage, he co-wrote the Tony-nominated musical Something Rotten! with songwriting brothers Wayne and Karey Kirkpatrick before the trio reunited for Mrs. Doubtfire. “I had done a musical on Broadway with Wayne and Karey called Something Rotten!” O’Farrell told The Evening Standard theater podcast. “So when Kevin McCollum, the producer of Mrs. Doubtfire the Musical, acquired the back catalogue of Twentieth Century Fox’s musicals, he said to us, do you fancy having a go at Mrs. Doubtfire? And we immediately said yes. It is a show that sings. It is a show that wears its emotions on its sleeve. It comes from a great book originally, of course, by British author Anne Fine. It was then turned into a hugely popular film, and we are obviously trading off that.”
6 | curtaincall From the start, the goal was to make a stage version that was more than just the movie brought to life scene by scene. “I think the first thing we did was thought, well how do we make this a piece of theater rather than a film on stage?” O’Farrell told Broadway.com. “How do we pick those moments where we musicalize the drama and pick the songs? And these guys have written great songs for those moments!” That emotional core was as important as the comedy. “Anyone who is like, ‘Wait, why a musical?’ is remembering the comedy, they are remembering the farce,” original star Rob McClure told Broadway.com. “But wrapped in that farce is a family drama that really sings. What is going on for those kids in the midst of this messy divorce wants to be sung. And our brilliant composers have tapped into the emotional core of that story and blown it up in a way by musicalizing it, that drives it home more than ever.” Onstage, Daniel Hillard, an out-of-work actor desperate to stay in his kids’ lives after a messy divorce, transforms himself into Scottish nanny Euphegenia Doubtfire. As the disguises get wilder and the comedy ramps up, the heart of the story comes through, a father learning what it really means to be there for his family. Any actor stepping into the role approaches it with reverence for Williams’ iconic film performance while still making it their own. “My responsibility, ultimately, is not to do an impression,” McClure told Broadway.com. “It is to remember how Robin Williams’ performance made me feel, and make the audience feel what I remember feeling, laughing till it hurt, and then all of a sudden being profoundly moved.” For O’Farrell, that combination of comedy, craft and heart is exactly why Mrs. Doubtfire works and why audiences on tour will connect with it. “It is a show that sings. It is a show that wears its emotions on its sleeve,” he told The Evening Standard. REINVIGORATING THE SOUND OF MUSIC SET FOR A NEW TOUR
Scenic designer Doug Schmidt shares secrets behind new elements and the rationale that makes his whole concept sing. STORY BY
RUTHIE FIERBERG Oscar Hammerstein II’s famous lyrics for the title song of The Sound of Music conjure the vision of a lush, idyllic Austrian countryside in the imagination of every listener: the hills that are alive, the brook that trips and falls, the wings of the birds that rise from the lake to the trees. Veteran scenic designer Doug Schmidt had the task of sufficiently realizing the landscape of our minds — and nearly a dozen more locations — for the revitalized tour of The Sound of Music now whisking across North America. With a score by Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, The Sound of Music follows the Von Trapp family — the strict widower Captain Von Trapp and his seven children — as they welcome a new governess, a novice nun named Maria. Through song, Maria reawakens a love that had been lost in the Von Trapp home, just as the Nazis gain power in Europe and threaten that home. Schmidt and director Jack O’Brien collaborated for The Sound of Music tour back in 2015; this tour combines that thoughtful design with new elements to make the musical dazzle. “We went back and decided to put in a couple more [back]drops to locate the scenes,” Schmidt told Broadway News. “When you’re looking through the windows in the back of the set, you now see a vista of mansions around the lake, for example. Or, if you’re outside looking in, you’ll see the interior of the room.” Four new backdrops offer a firmer grounding, making it clear the musical is set in real place. As Schmidt explained, “We felt that [The Sound of Music] was telling a real story, and it was one that we wanted to have some convincing details back there and not just a cyc [a white, fabric drop] with a color light on it. So we got much more specific.” “For example, looking out over the lake in the back of the mansion, you would get more of a sense of what they were giving up and what was at stake in terms of

the Nazi takeover,” Schmidt continued. These new drops present a photorealistic aesthetic. “We wanted to really make it quite beautiful back there. So we went to the more illustrative look.” The photorealism is also a result of the technique used to make these drops. That view over the lake, as well as the drop during the title song, have been digitally printed. Still, one of the other new drops — what Schmidt referred to as the “show scrim with trees and dapply light in the background” — was hand-painted. Regardless of the method by which these backgrounds were crafted, Schmidt stipulated precise colors and translucency for the ink or paint in order to achieve multiple desired effects throughout each performance. “Some of those drops have to work as daytime drops and nighttime drops, so you have to be able to backlight them and get silhouettes for the evening [scenes] and front-light it for the full panoramic look,” Schmidt described. It required specific knowledge of the interaction between set and lighting and an expert collaborator in lighting designer Natasha Katz. As Schmidt said of his colleague, “She can really clue into what is needed to sell the vision.” But backdrops do not a set make. Schmidt’s design fuses these vast, bold images with flats and furniture in the foreground. The challenge is to create a unified image. But if scenic design is both an aesthetic and engineering discipline, Schmidt said cohesion comes down to the latter. “It comes down to transitions, really — how you get from one to the next,” said the designer. “Part of the job of a designer is to participate a little bit like the choreographer, getting things on and offstage in a graceful or exciting fashion that doesn’t look haphazard.” That undertaking becomes more complicated for a tour, when the stage space constantly changes. “You get the parameters from the producers — the size of the stage that we can expect on the tour, and it’s kind of an amalgam of the least big of all the rest of the theaters.” And yet, Schmidt also accomplishes the trick of filling the largest venues. Elegant staircases, towering columns, an impressive veranda and a glimmering chandelier create opulence for the Von Trapp home; those same columns, lacey framing and austere wood finishes convey the sacredness of the abbey. But none of this is generic; Schmidt chose details to imbue his design with the specific time and place of The Sound of Music. The lace walls convey “an antique quality that I was looking for to make it not exactly a fairy tale, but have a certain resonance about it — so it seemed to be of the old world that was ending in many ways,” said Schmidt. The columns serve the practical purpose of framing scenes as they squeeze into focus on smaller scenes and span out to give breathing room to larger ones. But the style of the columns — as well as other elements in the abbey scenes — reveals architectural history. “On my tour of the churches of Europe, I discovered that they were all built up over many centuries, so you have many different styles and periods of architecture piled one on top of the other,” Schmidt described. “There’s a church in Prague that you can see maybe the 12th century on the bottom up to the 17th and 18th century at the top.” So, to reflect the 1930s in Austria, Schmidt actually needed to incorporate multiple previous eras in his design.
