STORY BY DARRYN KING
Nick Fradiani, the singer-songwriter and Season 14 “American Idol” winner, was three or four years old when he first saw Neil Diamond live—his first concert experience.
If Fradiani was too young to remember the concert all these years later, he has many distinct memories of bonding with his musician father over a shared love of Diamond’s music. “My whole life was going out and watching my dad gig and play at different places—he would always do Neil Diamond music,” Fradiani told Tamsen Fadal on “The Broadway Show.” Diamond’s The Christmas Album was big at home around Christmastime too, the singer’s smooth, earthy tones and distinctive phrasing making a big impression on the young Nick. “Me and my dad would jokingly sing in the Neil voice: ‘O come, o come Emmanuel…’”
All that childhood practice has come seriously in handy. Fradiani made his Broadway debut portraying Neil Diamond—the singer-songwriter behind such evergreen hits as “Sweet Caroline,” “Cherry, Cherry,” “Red Red Wine” and “I’m a Believer”— in A Beautiful Noise on Broadway. He now leads the national touring production, bringing those Diamond hits to theaters across America.
It’s been a good excuse for Fradiani to resume his Neil Diamond studies in earnest. He spent a year and a half analyzing videos on YouTube and absorbing

Diamond’s voice (speaking and singing), mannerisms and general aura. “You want to do it justice every night.”
None of that research prepared Fradiani for the experience of meeting the man himself. “It was more just kind of being in awe,” said Fradiani. “Just being in his presence was really cool.”
If A Beautiful Noise is a culminating moment for Fradiani, the same could be said for Diamond himself. Around 1989—when Fradiani saw Diamond in concert—the singer was set to work on a film project about his experiences as a young contract songwriter, based on his album Beautiful Noise. That movie project never materialized, but the new musical explores that chapter of Diamond’s life and much more besides.
“I’m glad that people are getting to see his real story,” said Fradiani. “This is the first time it’s really been told and this is how he wanted it to be told.”
A few years after his first musical—the national tour of A Bronx Tale in 2019—Fradiani feels totally at home in musical theater. “I just fell in love with it. I’ve fallen in love with the acting side of it and the camaraderie of the cast and everything. It feels like I’m back in a band, where you have the wins together, you have the losses together—you create something together.”
Plus, Nick and his father have gotten to bond over the music, just like in the old days. “I think it’s probably been the most proud I’ve ever seen my dad—when he comes and gets to see me do these songs.”

The playwright responsible for the book of Tina: The Tina Turner Musical shares her memory of the queen of rock n’ roll.

STORY BY KATORI HALL
That voice—cured in southern soil fertilized by the blood of a people well acquainted with the wails of loss. That story—a whisper turned into a roar. That hair—always one of one. And them legs, oh them legs, so long they could run their way into tomorrow. There is the musical genius we call the Queen of Rock and Roll Tina Turner, and there is the little Black girl born Anna Mae Bullock. I count myself blessed to have danced with both.
“You must be pregnant.” I don’t know if that was Tina Turner or Anna Mae talking to me. Methinks it was the latter, as I felt totally at home chatting with this sister-girl from the South. No subject matter was off limits during our interview-turned-kiki at her home in Switzerland. As a book-writer I had been tasked with the impossible—to help retell her triumphant comeback story in musical theater form while weaving in over 20 iconic songs. You see, five hours in, nausea was rising with the setting of the sun, but I promptly waved away the pregnancy possibility as jetlag and pressed on as we talked about it all. The music. The pain. The questions left unanswered. The prayers, too.

It was her candidness and fierce transparency that allowed us to work together with such ease. The countless hours I spent talking to her reshaped Tina: The Tina Turner Musical into an emotional juggernaut of tears and triumph. There is something magical when our heroes are as relatable as they are untouchable, as human as they are immortal.
I was able to let Tina know a few weeks later that she was, indeed, right. “I knew it!” She was truly connected to the stars, a woman ahead of her time, a woman always walking towards a North Star led by the compass of her own intuition.
It was this ability to listen to the God inside herself that helped Tina pave the way for her own tomorrow and for every Black female artist who has walked behind her. We all know the story. After a turbulent 16-year-long abusive marriage, Tina left with only pennies to her name. Forced to start over, she cobbled together her next chapter, working as a maid while singing quite literally for her life. Buoyed by her Buddhist spirituality, this survivor remade herself from her own cloth, taking a chance to experiment with a new sound—a new Tina.
Despite being called the foulest of slurs by dismissive record executives, Tina slayed the dragons of sexism, racism and ageism, reclaiming the white male-dominated industry of rock and roll for her ancestors. Adam Levine should change “the moves like Jagger” to “the moves like Tina,” as her rapturous stage performances set the template for performers across the world. But none have danced so fearlessly with death in both life and performance. Just watch a 70-year-old Tina during her 50th anniversary concert in The Netherlands sprinting (in heels!) across a steel platform with no harness stories above an adoring crowd. Living in your truth requires a bravery most of us have never known, and Tina showed so many women they had a right to life, a right to freedom and a right to love. Her willingness to share her story from memoir to movie to theatrical form has freed so many of us survivors.
Her global impact will be felt for generations. Upon her passing, that distinct rasp roared out of speakers from Uganda to Australia. The flowers poured in from everywhere, from former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama to Mick Jagger, himself. “If you’re a fan of mine, you’re a fan of Tina Turner,” Beyoncé said to her own adoring crowd of tens of thousands during her Renaissance World Tour. With her music and with her story, Tina paved the way for so many women—from global superstars to survivors and everyone in between.
The last time I spoke to Tina was in 2022. She and her beloved husband, Erwin Bach, called having heard that I had added yet another baby into my life’s rotation. “Congratulations! A baby girl?” she squealed with delight from across the ocean that divided us but couldn’t keep these two Tennessee girls apart. I will always remember this living legend, this icon, this North Star, for her commitment to always taking time to celebrate life.
May we remember her life, so that we can see those legs made of stardust and triumph, dancing amongst the heavens.
Tina: The Tina Turner Musical takes center stage April 3–4 at the Majestic Theatre as part of the North Park Lexus Broadway in San Antonio series. For extended cuts of this interview and others, head over to Broadway.com.

The idea of a Broadway musical about my life has always been a daunting one. It wasn’t until the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease prematurely ended my touring career that I started to seriously consider the prospect. I say “prematurely” because my heart and soul would tour until the day I die if only my body would cooperate.
My friend and longtime producer Bob Gaudio had some success with his little show, Jersey Boys (perhaps you’ve heard of it?), so I went to him for some guidance on where to begin. Bob brought in Ken Davenport and together they built the incredible creative team that became, A Beautiful Noise.
When Anthony McCarten came on board, we spent hours talking. It was his idea to frame the show in the context of therapy sessions. I loved the idea and never shied away from talking about my years of psychoanalysis. There used to be a stigma around talking about mental health and thankfully through the years, it’s become an important and accepted topic of conversation.
Sitting in the theatre and watching the show has itself been therapeutic: reliving some joyful and some of the painful parts of my life, wishing perhaps that if I could only make a few edits in the script, it would change some of the reality of what I was seeing. But in the end, coming to terms with my life and accepting it has somehow come full circle. I feel fortunate and full of gratitude for all the people in my life. It is each of them who have impacted and shaped me in their own way to get me to the place where I am now…a better man. A better father. A better husband. A better songwriter.
I’d like to thank Marcia and Jaye, this story wouldn’t be possible without you. My children and grandchildren for your most important supporting roles in my life. My wife, Katie, who encouraged me to keep going through this process and finally, to Dr. Lu Katzman, my longtime therapist who inspired this story. May she rest in peace.
