OHIO THEATRE COLUMBUS, OHIO

Dear Broadway Patrons,

The holiday season is for making memories with family and friends. At CAPA, we’ve always leaned into the idea that we have the privilege of sharing in many of those moments.

The holidays are a busy time, so we’re incredibly proud that you’ve chosen to spend some of this special time of the year with CAPA. Our spectacular Downtown theatres are made even more beautiful thanks to your presence in them and thanks to the many talented and dedicated artists who perform on our stages all throughout the year.

Holiday season 2025 is no exception when it comes to making memories with CAPA. We kick off the season with our production–in partnership with our friends at Short North Stage–of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol on Thanksgiving weekend here in the Ohio Theatre. We brought this Columbus tradition back in 2023 and are grateful so many of you have (re-)embraced it.

We’re also bringing back some of our favorite holiday tours that we know audiences love to experience year after year. Over the Rhine will bring their lovely acoustic Christmas show to the Davidson Theatre on December 6; and saxophonist Dave Koz returns with his annual festive and fun Christmas show on December 11 at the Palace.

Add to those a holiday show from country acapella group Home Free on November 22 at the Davidson; A Magical Cirque Christmas, a fantastic holiday-themed acrobatic and theatrical show December 4 at the Palace; and the unique Rain: A Beatles Christmas Celebration December 6, also at the Palace, and there are plenty of memory-making opportunities with CAPA this season.

See you in the theatres!

WHAT WOULD SOME LIKE IT HOT SOUND LIKE WITHOUT ORCHESTRATIONS?

The sound you hear from the stage isn’t solely by a composer — it comes from a whole music team.

A flute trills. A trumpet blasts. A harp cascades. The strings begin to tremor, the brass section clamors and the star begins to sing. Whether seated inside a theatre or snuggled up with a cast album, audiences know the sounds of the musicals they love. It’s a balanced blend of voices and instruments (and sometimes tap shoes), melodies and harmonies and rhythms that create the complete soundscape of a musical. And though the basis of any score is written by a composer and lyricist, the textures and richness, the sweeping and soaring, the blaring and gutting are contributions of the lesser-recognized orchestrator.

Orchestrators take the initial skeleton of a song from the composer, and through collaborative discussions about musical genre, time period, storytelling within the show’s narrative, location and budget, create the complete body of what audiences then think of as the song.

“Orchestrators are responsible for conveying a composer’s ideas and intentions to an audience,” said Bryan Carter, a Tony-nominated orchestrator of Some Like It Hot

“When done correctly, the collaboration between the composer who writes the songs and the orchestrator who illustrates them is so seamless that people can’t tell where one starts and one ends,” added Carter’s Tony-nominated co-orchestrator Charlie Rosen. Songwriters pen the foundation, arrangers expand the songs with architecture—“adding an intro, writing dance-break music to fit choreography, coming up with underscoring within the song for scenes,” Rosen explains—and orchestrators compose the décor, using everything from sweeping strings to gritty electric guitar.

“Orchestrators dedicate their lives to the study of musical scores and recordings to have the largest possible palette of sounds, references and ideas necessary to evoke a desired emotional response from the listener,” said Carter. In fact, emotion is a top priority for musical-theater orchestrators.

And orchestration doesn’t always mean “an orchestra.” With the synthesizers, drum machines and keyboards that some shows demand, orchestrators experiment with musical instruments as well as knobs and dials.

Technically speaking, an orchestrator writes down the notes for each instrument to play. But artistically, those notes are informed by what the orchestrator sees and hears onstage. Should that mournful sound be a violin or an oboe? What will complement the vocal soloist? Is this a big ensemble moment that needs the full brass of the orchestra behind them? Those are the choices orchestrators make.

As Rosen put it: “Next time you’re moved by the instruments accompanying your favorite show, mentally tip your hat to the orchestrator and learn their name because they have defined the sound of Broadway for generations.”

Rosen and Carter won the 2023 Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for Some Like It Hot. Below, they describe creating the orchestrations for the title song of the musical. “Some Like It Hot” from Some Like It Hot Orchestrations by Charlie Rosen and Bryan Carter Music by Marc Shaiman

Lyrics by March Shaiman and Scott Wittman

Bryan Carter: Some Like It Hot is a show about a professional touring band—which means, dramaturgically, there are several moments that feature virtuosic musicianship. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are excellent at communicating their musical references and influences. Charlie and I were told to capture the sounds of “the Big Band age” and “Golden Age of the MGM musical.” Some Like It Hot is heavily influenced by the Big Band sounds of [Count] Basie and [Duke] Ellington. Though we have a large orchestra by today’s [Broadway] standards, we’re still 50 percent short of the traditional eight-horn configuration of those aforementioned bands—although at times, Ellington used six horns. Charlie and I had to be extremely creative with how we used the brass section. We tried just about every trick in the proverbial “orchestration handbook” to make the brass section feel larger than it actually is.

Charlie Rosen: We are absolutely taking specific references and putting our own contemporary spin on them. For example, making a choice like using tuba to double a bass line evokes more of a 1920s-era Big Band before the upright bass was more in vogue. The use of banjo instead of guitar might evoke a more traditional Broadway sound. The clarinet leading the saxophone section instead of an alto sax might evoke more of a New Orleans speakeasy feel.

Carter: Because “Some Like It Hot” ends the first act, there are orchestrational tools that we utilized to give the song a feeling of completeness. For example, the ensemble builds to the end of the song with a fairly traditional Big Band “shout” motif and concludes with a tight button that consists of a large, harmonized spread between the highest note (lead trumpet) and lowest note (bass and bari-sax). This sound has a powerful impact and sends the audience into intermission with a smile on their face.

CAPA COMMUNITY CREATES

HELPS ADULTS EXPLORE THEIR CREATIVITY

Exploration of, and education in, the arts isn’t just a thing for kids. Broadway in Columbus audience members are just as likely to be involved in some way with the performing arts, and it doesn’t have to be at the professional level.

Through our new CAPA Community Creates initiative, CAPA’s Education and Engagement Department recognizes that both the desire and opportunity to participate in the performing arts continues even after one’s formal school days are over.

This new, free program, designed for adults 18 and older who are interested in learning more about participating in the performing arts, has offered Central Ohioans the opportunity to learn more about dance and movement and audition preparation—and, in December, songwriting.

Each session includes a conversation with local teaching artists who are working professionally in their field. At the conclusion

of the conversation, participants have an additional hour in the lab to practice a new or familiar art form with the teaching artists. Teaching artists lead the lab through the lens of their conversation topic, encouraging participants to try something new in a safe, guided space, and providing resources for further exploration of the art form.

“Our main goal for the CAPA Community Creates session is to help adults re-connect with curiosity and joy through the performing arts. Our conversations and group explorations have already led participants to find new interests and helped them expand their community networks. We’re excited to continue creating in our next session,” said CAPA Community Engagement Manager Elyse Kassa.

Kassa said that CAPA Education & Engagement plans to host this program annually in different community spaces in and around Columbus, continuing to explore various performing artforms with the help of local teaching artists. Keep an eye out for more information about CAPA Community Creates 2026!
