INSIDE THE TONY-WINNING COSTUME DESIGNS THAT BRING JAZZ AGE GLAMOUR TO LIFE IN THE GREAT GATSBY

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby dazzles readers with intoxicating prose about glowing lights, copious drinks and too-eager laughter. Beneath the glitter, Fitzgerald reveals a discerning eye for clothing and what it can say about a person.

Jay Gatsby, the enigmatic party host, shockingly wears a pink suit, a choice no true Oxford man would make. Readers first meet Daisy and Jordan through their rippling fluttering dresses, and poor naive Myrtle squeezes into a brown muslin number that reflects her station.

Bringing this sartorial splendor to life on Broadway fell to costume designer Linda Cho. Together with her team, she crafted a lavish array of period fashions that capture the glamour and excess of the Jazz Age. “You don’t get a lot of opportunities to do a giant period musical with seemingly endless resources and just sort of design the dream,” Cho told Broadway.com Managing Editor Beth Stevens on “The Broadway Show.”

Among all the exquisite creations, Daisy stands out as one of the most chal

lenging and rewarding characters to design for. She undergoes ten costume changes during the production. “We definitely wanted her to be a fashion show,” Cho said. “Every time she comes on, it should be something different. Everything should just look like Gatsby’s dream.”

This remarkable work earned Cho the Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Musical at the 77th Annual Tony Awards. It was the show’s only nomination and its sole win of the night.

Accepting the award, Cho shared a deeply personal story. “I just wanted to tell you about my mom. When I was a teenager, she said, ‘You’re a woman, you’re a minority, you will never succeed in anything artistic,’ and it was out of love. It was out of protection.” She added that her mother would be “amazed” by her nomination.

She also took a moment to recognize the collective effort behind Gatsby’s visual splendor. “I do one part of what you see at Gatsby every night. It takes trusting collaborative partners, our director, producers, writers, an entire village of people who craft and care for the 275 costumes you see on stage every night. I’d like to acknowledge my team.”

In a candid conversation after the ceremony, Cho reflected on what the Tony win means to her career and her creative journey. “I am so happy that I get to do this for Gatsby, for our show. For me the work has always been the reward. Winning a Tony means I get to do other cool things that I hopefully get asked to do. It just means more work.”

Through her visionary designs, the costumes transcend mere clothing. They become a vital part of the storytelling, embodying the dreams and desires of a transformative era.

THE

STORY OF SIX: LUCY MOSS AND TOBY MARLOW’S EMPOWERING BROADWAY MUSICAL

Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow created SIX, a musical that celebrates the compelling stories of Henry VIII’s six wives while delving into themes of empowerment and representation in the theater. The musical opens with the iconic refrain: “Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived.” Through this catchy hook, the wives take the mic to reclaim their identities from the shadow of their infamous spouse, remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into an exuberant celebration of 21st-century girl power. The all-female cast is backed by an equally dynamic all-female band, the “Ladies in Waiting,” further enhancing the show’s infectious energy and contemporary flair.

As SIX developed, Moss reflected on its impact on audiences. “It’s so humbling and inspiring really to see so many people getting excited and getting involved,” she said. “Our amazing queendom is particularly good about getting creative. It feels so wonderful to have made something that inspires people.” This sense of community and creativity is a vital part of the production, fostering an environment where diverse voices can be heard and celebrated.

Marlow expressed deep pride in the project, stating, “It’s unbelievable. I can’t even begin to put into words how proud I am. To go from those conversations to literally making history on Broadway is pretty cool.” This journey from initial discussions to a fully realized production illustrates the power of their friendship and collaboration. Marlow made history as the first nonbinary person

to win a Tony Award for Original Score, highlighting the significance of this achievement within the context of the theater industry and its ongoing evolution toward inclusivity.

The mission behind SIX is clear: to amplify voices that are often overlooked in traditional narratives. “We wrote these songs because we wanted to give a funny voice to women and nonbinary people who are our friends, and it’s just so exciting to recognize them,” Moss said, emphasizing their commitment to representation. The musical not only entertains but also encourages audiences to engage with history in a meaningful way, prompting reflection on how stories are told and whose voices are included.

With SIX, Moss and Marlow invite audiences to celebrate history in a fresh and engaging manner—full of laughter, music, and creativity. Each song is a modern anthem that allows the wives to express their individuality, from the fierce determination of Anne Boleyn to the resilient spirit of Catherine Parr. The choreography and melodies resonate with audiences, making the show not just a retelling of history, but a powerful commentary on female empowerment and agency. Their work showcases the joy of blending history with pop culture. By merging theatrical storytelling with contemporary music styles, SIX transcends the traditional boundaries of musical theater, inviting a new generation to engage with the stories of these historical figures. Ultimately, SIX is not just a musical; it is a celebration of resilience, identity and the vibrant spirit of women. By giving these historical figures a modern voice, the production invites audiences to engage with their stories in a fresh and entertaining way. This approach not only entertains but also sparks conversations about the importance of diverse narratives in theater, making it a significant addition to the contemporary musical landscape.
