COSTUME DESIGNER JEN CAPRIO FINDS HER GRAIL WITH THE SPAMALOT NATIONAL TOUR

Spamalot, the irreverent, Tony Award-winning musical romp that first hit Broadway in 2005 is back with a new North American tour. Self-described as “lovingly ripped” from the Monty Python and the Holy Grail film, Spamalot follows King Arthur and his famous band of knights on a hilarious musical twist of their legendary quest. Alongside director/choreographer Josh Rhodes (Bright Star, Cinderella), Jen Caprio, who designed costumes for the show’s 2023 Broadway revival, returns for another riotous round of silly British royalty, dancing girls and boys, and, of course, the one-and-only Lady of the Lake. Beyond Spamalot, the Emmy Award-winning costume designer’s work spans stage and screen, ranging from Broadway to “Sesame Street” with over 250 productions designed over the course of the last 25 years.

Caprio’s certain that her younger self would geek out over Spamalot. “When I was a teenager, I read all these books about Camelot,” she says. “A lot of fantasy design comes from that period.” At the same time, she’s not sure her teenage self would believe her current career. “I didn’t know that design was something you could do for a living,” she explains. “My dad was a professor and my mom was an engineer, so it was a very science-brain focused [household]. I remember talking to my high school guidance counselor and she said, ‘Be a designer.’ And I was like, ‘That’s a thing?’ If I hadn’t listened to her, who knows what I’d be doing!”

Designing any Broadway national tour involves necessary reinvention, but Caprio describes Spamalot as a special undertaking with an extraordinary amount of history attached—on screen, stage and in real life. “You have this entire language already established,” Caprio says. “Hazel Pethig, who did the original Monty Python films’ costume design, created this amazing world with the Python writers and actors. With a play like Spamalot, we need to keep within the [Monty Python] world, to make sense within this silly, sketch comedy landscape, but then also be contemporary. How do we evolve the design and also honor the original?” According to Caprio, “[the design process] is like a translation. You’ve got a script that might exist in French, and you can put your own mark on it.”

Caprio treasures all the “little bits” developed throughout the show’s rehearsal process—the moments that add fresh comedy to the production. For example, says Caprio, “in our France number, we have a chef and on the chef’s hat is the Ratatouille rat [from the Disney film].” Also, according to Caprio, “[director] Josh [Rhodes] wanted to fill the stage more during the Laker Girls scene, so we added Laker Boys. That was super fun to work with those fellas and figure out, how short should the shorts be? How much bicep are we showing?”

It’s clear that Caprio values both the inherent levity and creative challenge of working on comedies. “They’re harder than anything else. Comedy has to take itself so seriously to be funny. There are times when you can just do silliness on silliness, but what is so great about the Python type of sketch comedy is it’s all very rooted in reality. So, how far do you push a stereotype? It’s a fine line,” she says “You don’t want to put a hat on a hat because that’s probably not funny, but sometimes it is.” One moment that particularly tickles the designer

in Spamalot is the “DJ Frog” character. “I don’t know if it came from [original Broadway director] Mike Nichols’ brain or [Spamalot creator] Eric Idol’s brain, but it’s so funny. Why is it funny? I don’t know. A frog in the swamp being a DJ is just funny!”

In addition to the musical’s pure comedy, Caprio appreciates how Spamalot provides the opportunity for introspection, too. “To walk away and think, what are our dreams and how do we make our dreams happen? What is everyone’s ‘grail’?” Still, the designer insists that joy remains the most important takeaway for audiences—and herself. Her advice to showgoers: “Be like Arthur, gather some friends, sit around a table, and then go enjoy the show.”

Julie Taymor on the challenges of translating the film version to the stage:

“To maintain the integrity of my own style, while incorporating it into one of the most beloved stories in recent history, was the first challenge to contemplate. With preconceptions about what the characters should look and sound like would the audience accept variations on a theme? Additionally, many of The Lion King’s scenes are seemingly impossible to transfer to the stage. The wildebeest stampede, the elephant graveyard, and its hundred hyenas. They are all inherently cinematic scenes. I relished the chance to stage them theatrically.”

On how the stage version of The Lion King differs from the film version:

“The limited 75 minute running time of the film just didn’t allow time for Simba to truly take the journey, both inner and outer, that would lead him full circle to his place as king. The two act stage format provided ample time to deepen and strengthen Simba and show the arduous path that leads to his selfdiscovery. His story needed more detail, depth and conflict.”

On theater’s unique advantage to other mediums:

“I had decided early on that I would not do a realistic rendition of the Pridelands. I wanted audiences to be released from their memories of the film right from the start. I wanted them to take a leap of faith and imagination. Stage mechanics would be visible. Showing the mechanics, revealing the rods, ropes and wires that make it all happen, is something that the theatre can do that the film and television cannot. They are literal mediums where the spectator is asked to believe in the reality of the image while the theatre functions best as a poetic medium. The audience, given a hint or suggestion of an idea, is ready to fill in the lines, to take it the rest of the way. Magic can exist in blatantly showing how theatre is created rather than hiding the “how.”

On the marriage of the human actors with their animal counterparts:

“One of the most powerful elements of the film is the rich humanity of the animal characters. In considering this ironic duality of the human and the animal it became critical in the design concept not to hide the actor behind a whole mask or inside an animal body suit. I wanted the human being to be an essential part of stylization. I wanted the audience to marvel at what a human being can do through true technical prowess.”

On how actors are selected for their roles in The Lion King:

“I brought puppets to auditions to see how performers would look in relation to specific puppets and how they would respond when asked to animate an inanimate object. Attitude is a very important part of my casting decision. I want an actor who is going to enjoy the challenge and not view it as a burden. Rather than expressly hiring puppeteers, I look for inventive actors who move well. A strong actor gives an idiosyncratic performance, because he infuses the puppet character with his own personality instead of relying on generic puppetry technique. The thrill of working with a good actor who is new to this medium, and who loves the puppet he is working with, is that he will take the form further than I ever imagined.”

On how the actors approached their animal roles:

“Each actor had to find the duality of the animal and the human within their performance. An actress cannot put on Nala’s mask and costume and talk with Simba as though she had just run into him on the street. As lioness/young human she has to find a way of standing, walking and gesturing that fulfills the demands of the production’s conceit.”

On seeing the puppets come to life:

“When a figure made of wood of fabric moves like a living thing, the visual and emotional impact is magical. One can either focus solely on the puppet or enjoy the direct and transparent art of the actor motivating the puppet. At rest, a puppet is just a facsimile of a human being or an animal. But when Zazu’s wings flutter excitedly or Timon cocks his head at a quizzical angle, the pleasure of watching that facsimile turn into a being with recognizable emotions is the pinnacle of this type theatre experience.”

ERIC IDLE (Book, Music & Lyrics) is one of the original six creators of Monty Python’s Flying Circus which began life on BBCTV in 1969. They eventually made six feature films, including two of the top ten comedy movies of all time. Eric, together with longtime collaborator and Composer John Du Prez, adapted The Holy Grail, into the hit musical Monty Python’s Spamalot, which ran for almost five years on Broadway, and popped up again on Broadway in a 2023 revival and is now touring the US. The original was nominated for 13 Tonys, winning 3, including Best Director for Mike Nichols and the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005, plus a Drama Desk Award, and a Grammy for the authors. They then created a Comic Oratorio Not The Messiah, He’s a Very Naughty Boy based on Monty Python’s Life of Brian, which premiered in Toronto, and played The Sydney Opera House, The Hollywood Bowl, Wolf Trap, and Carnegie Hall and was eventually filmed with most of the Pythons at The Royal Albert Hall for the 40th Anniversary of Monty Python. Eric wrote, directed and starred in The Rutles, the world’s first mockumentary, and in 2012 he sang his own song "Always Look On the Bright Side of

Life," before a billion people at the Closing Ceremony of the London Olympics. In 2014 he directed and appeared alongside Conductor John Du Prez in the Monty Python final reunion show One Down Five To Go which sold out London’s O2 Arena for ten nights. In 2018 his Sortabiography Always Look on the Bright of Life became a New York Times Best seller. In 2019, he was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer which he survived thanks to early diagnosis and great Doctors. Following his appearance on "The Masked Singer" in 2022, he launched The Bright Side Fund (Standup2Cancer/Eric Idle) to help fund Research. His musical play What About Dick? with songs by JDP is currently playing on Prime and his latest book The Spamalot Diaries which tell the tale of the creation of Spamalot has just been nominated for a Thurber Award. His forthcoming book Idle in Provence, A Brief History of Thyme will be published by Harpers Select in September 2026.

A Grammy Award-winning composer, John Du Prez has scored over 20 feature films including A Fish Called Wanda, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I-III, Once Bitten, The Meaning of Life and the cult classic “Weird Al” Yankovic’s UHF. A Trevelyan Scholar at Christ Church, Oxford (Oriental Studies) he worked as a Music Lecturer at London University 1974 -9 and was Principal Horn of the Hong Kong Philharmonic and many other orchestras. He entered the film industry composing additional music for Monty Python’s Life of Brian. It was on this project that he first worked with Eric Idle. This began their long writing partnership which culminated in Spamalot and Not The Messiah. He also worked on two movies for George Harrison’s HandMade Films (Bullshot & Shanghai Surprise) and played trumpet on many Top 20 hits with the UK salsa band Modern Romance, winners of the Best New Band 1981 award from the NY DJ Syndicate for their club hit Everybody Salsa. He was Music Director for Python’s 2014 O2 Arena concerts and recently scored the Bafta Award winning TV animation series The Clangers.
