CQ QUINTANA Des McAnuff has been with Jersey Boys from the beginning, directing the original Broadway production, which won the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical and earned him the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical. Written by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice with music by Bob Gaudio and lyrics by Bob Crewe, the musical tells the story of Four Seasons members Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi and their friendship, ambition and rise to fame, set to the group’s greatest hits.

Now, McAnuff reunites with the musical’s original choreographer and fellow Canadian, Sergio Trujillo, on the show’s 20th anniversary North American tour. The director reflects on the lasting power of a show he clearly adores as much as ever. What was your relationship to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons before you started work on the show? Coincidentally, it was my very first album. The Seasons were on the airwaves along with the Beach Boys, and they were about the only thing that was really interesting. Music had been sanitized with the death of Buddy Holly and Elvis going into the Army, and they came along with a completely unique sound. They wrote songs about blue collar kids, so I responded to them. Bob Gaudio was the first guy in a band who I realized wrote the songs. I went on to write a few songs myself, so that had a big influence on me. What made you want to come back to Jersey Boys? It’s never really gone away! We just did a version in England that’s touring now. A wonderful incarnation of the show—very faithful to the original. There are a lot of people who are very good at directing that never get to experience something like this. It’s not a shock to walk into a rehearsal and hear “Big Girls Don’t Cry”—I mean, I’ve been doing it for more than 20 years. But I’ve never experienced a version [of the show] where I don’t feel excited about the result. What is the show’s enduring appeal? It’s something about that combination of immigrant and blue collar kids coming from a tough town in Jersey. An American dream and an American nightmare crossing over with the mafia and getting into incredible financial trouble. Jersey Boys is a biography. As I once heard Bob Gaudio say, ‘It’s 90% true.’ The musical came out around the same time the Sopranos [ended]. From the time of The Godfather, and certainly before, going back to Cagney, that idea of the American gangster is part of our mythology and obsession. It’s a rich stew, Jersey Boys! The combination of doo-wop and the mob. Tell us about your creative partnership with choreographer Sergio Trujillo. First of all, I’m extremely proud of Sergio. We’re good friends. I had a choreographer that I was talking to drop out of Jersey Boys and had to find somebody quickly. We met in Los Angeles, and I will confess I have a bias toward Canadians. It’s not like I hire them over anybody else, but I definitely pay attention if I meet a Canadian. I realized very quickly that he was the right guy. He was ambitious. He used the Temptations steps [at first], and I said, ‘Sergio, you have to go slow. The real [Four] Seasons didn’t dance at all.’ The choreography needed to evolve into the second act—you get into “Beggin’” and they’re really strutting their stuff. Sergio started over very generously. Then we ended up doing Ain’t Too Proud, so all of that work ended up going to good use. Truthfully, he did a great job with Jersey Boys, and I think it’s sometimes overlooked because it’s not about cartwheels—it’s subtle. It’s great storytelling. Is there a number you’re especially excited to revisit? The way the songs come out of the story is what’s really moving—thanks to the collaboration between [book writers] Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. I love the “Walk Like a Man” sequence, which is a fabulous song about being dumped. And in the second act, I love “Beggin’” because it’s so unexpected, and most of all, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” which is an anthem. There are so many moments that I could talk about! Jersey Boys has played a lot of places, and it still has a great deal of momentum. It’s the history of pop music, and that is something we’re all interested in. It’s our culture. Julie Taymor on the challenges of translating the film version to the stage: “To maintain the integrity of my own style, while incorporating it into one of the most beloved stories in recent history, was the first challenge to contemplate. With preconceptions about what the characters should look and sound like would the audience accept variations on a theme? Additionally, many of The Lion King’s scenes are seemingly impossible to transfer to the stage. The wildebeest stampede, the elephant graveyard, and its hundred hyenas. They are all inherently cinematic scenes. I relished the chance to stage them theatrically.” On how the stage version of The Lion King differs from the film version: “The limited 75 minute running time of the film just didn’t allow time for Simba to truly take the journey, both inner and outer, that would lead him full circle to his place as king. The two act stage format provided ample time to deepen and strengthen Simba and show the arduous path that leads to his self-discovery. His story needed more detail, depth and conflict.” On theater’s unique advantage to other mediums: “I had decided early on that I would not do a realistic rendition of the Pridelands. I wanted audiences to be released from their memories of the film right from the start. I wanted them to take a leap of faith and imagination. Stage mechanics would be visible. Showing the mechanics, revealing the rods, ropes and wires that make it all happen, is something that the theatre can do that the film and television cannot. They are literal mediums where the spectator is asked to believe in the reality of the image while the theatre functions best as a
8 | curtaincall poetic medium. The audience, given a hint or suggestion of an idea, is ready to fill in the lines, to take it the rest of the way. Magic can exist in blatantly showing how theatre is created rather than hiding the “how.” On the marriage of the human actors with their animal counterparts: “One of the most powerful elements of the film is the rich humanity of the animal characters. In considering this ironic duality of the human and the animal it became critical in the design concept not to hide the actor behind a whole mask or inside an animal body suit. I wanted the human being to be an essential part of stylization. I wanted the audience to marvel at what a human being can do through true technical prowess.” On how actors are selected for their roles in The Lion King: “I brought puppets to auditions to see how performers Gilbert Domally as Simba. The Lion King. would look in relation to specific Photo by Evan Zimmerman. puppets and how they would respond when asked to animate an inanimate object. Attitude is a very important part of my casting decision. I want an actor who is going to enjoy the challenge and not view it as a burden. Rather than expressly hiring puppeteers, I look for inventive actors who move well. A strong actor gives an idiosyncratic performance, because he infuses the puppet character with his own personality instead of relying on generic puppetry technique. The thrill of working with a good actor who is new to this medium, and who loves the puppet he is working with, is that he will take the form further than I ever imagined.” On how the actors approached their animal roles: “Each actor had to find the duality of the animal and the human within their performance. An actress cannot put on Nala’s mask and costume and talk with Simba as though she had just run into him on the street. As lioness/young human she has to find a way of standing, walking and gesturing that fulfills the demands of the production’s conceit.” On seeing the puppets come to life: “When a figure made of wood of fabric moves like a living thing, the visual and emotional impact is magical. One can either focus solely on the puppet or enjoy the direct and transparent art of the actor motivating the puppet. At rest, a puppet is just a facsimile of a human being or an animal. But when Zazu’s wings flutter excitedly or Timon cocks his head at a quizzical angle, the pleasure of watching that facsimile turn into a being with recognizable emotions is the pinnacle of this type theatre experience.” From The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway. BOB GAUDIO (Composer) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” “at 15,” for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of The Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy nomination, Record of the Year) as well as seven albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film of Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (“Silence Is Golden”), the Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”) and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for The Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longestcharted singles (54 weeks),“Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential musicmaker.” Gaudio co-produced the hit

In 2022, Gaudio’s song “Beggin’” recorded by Måneskin, an Italian rock group, was chosen as Favorite Song of the Year by The American Music Awards. Gaudio is currently working on a project relating to Frank Sinatra’s Watertown album. To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership...on a handshake. BOB CREWE (Lyricist). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writer-producers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957 they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie” – all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesley Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film, “Barbarella.” Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with “Music to Watch Girls By.” In 1972, Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. They also co-wrote Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” (#1, July ’75), which was a hit again on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge (#1, June ’01). DES McANUFF (Original Director) is a two-time Tony Award–winning director and former artistic director of Canada’s Stratford Festival. He is also director emeritus of La Jolla Playhouse, where as artistic director he staged over 30 productions of classics, new plays and musicals. He’s co-founder of Broadway’s Dodgers. He has choreographed more than 14 Broadway musicals and, in 2011, achieved the rare distinction of having four productions running simultaneously on Broadway: Next to Normal (Pulitzer Prize-winning musical), The Addams Family, Memphis (Olivier Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and NAACP Award winner), and Jersey Boys (Tony, Olivier, and Green Room Award winner). Most recently, he directed the Tony Awardnominated Real Women Have Curves on Broadway, Jesus Christ Superstar starring Cynthia Erivo and Adam Lambert at the Hollywood Bowl, Damn Yankees at Arena Stage (Helen Hayes Award for Choreography), Arrabal at the American Repertory Theater (Elliot Norton Award for Best Direction), Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour for Stage Entertainment, and co-directed The Harder They Come at The Public Theater.
